Term 3, Week 9 Wednesday 20 September 2017 Kia Ora Parents and Caregivers Another great week at Waitākiri with the very successful PTA Walkathon last Tuesday, a great day’s skiing for Korimako at Porters and the outstanding result for our two school Year 5 and 6 basketball teams (the Breakers and the Rams) on Thursday. The Breakers won the Cowles tournament for our zone and the Rams also won their division. A special thanks to their coaches Woody and past pupil Jesse Webb. Congratulations also to our fabulous dance team who won first place at the Primary Sports Dance Competition at Hornby High School. A special thanks to their coaches Chrissie Balloch and Holly Paine. Maths, as you know, is one of our Professional Learning (PL) foci this year and we are now three terms into our first year of learning which we’re all really enjoying. It has sometimes been challenging letting go of some of the more traditional approaches to teaching maths and being open (displaying a growth mindset) to new ideas and approaches. One of the attitudes we’re working really hard to change is that only certain people/children can do maths. I’m sure you’ve heard adults say this eg “I was no good at maths” or “I hated maths”. Unfortunately this type of talk is unhelpful and for many children is the biggest hurdle in their maths success. We strive to ensure our maths programmes are challenging, engaging, allow for deep thinking, explaining and justifying answers and ultimately where children believe that they can be successful at maths. The following video clip is an excellent talk about maths mindsets from Jo Boaler, Professor of Maths at Stanford University in the US. The talk is worth watching and is just over 3 minutes long. Fixed Mindset v. Growth in Maths On Monday evening we had Professor Bobbie Hunter speaking to our parents about our maths programme (Developing Mathematical Inquiry Communities -DMIC) and It was a very informative hour and a quarter. Parents also got to work in collaborative groups to solve a challenging maths problem. Some of the key messages from the evening included: Mathematics is culturally embedded within everyone’s life and culture - hairdresser, building - to do anything, you have to have maths. Maths is something that can be learnt by everyone - inclusive and respectful learning cultures are created - we want the students to know everybody can do maths Playing with maths and being creative is an important part of learning maths We learn maths by working together - as children work together they learn prosocial skills not antisocial skills - they learn to listen and unpack what they are talking about Learning maths involves taking risks and struggling with problems - teaches children resilience Students become flexible, and open to other’s perspectives The focus is on explaining and justifying the children’s maths thinking On the next page are some examples of the problems our children have worked on this term. You may like to try these at home. Enjoy the rest of your week everyone. Nāku iti noa, nā (Yours sincerely) Kaye Royle , Acting Deputy Principal

Kia Ora Parents and Caregivers

Another great week at Waitākiri with the very successful PTA Walkathon last Tuesday, a great day’s skiing for Korimako at Porters and the outstanding result for our two school Year 5 and 6 basketball teams (the Breakers and the Rams) on Thursday.

Growth in Maths

On Monday evening we had Professor Bobbie Hunter speaking to our parents about our maths programme (Developing Mathematical Inquiry Communities -DMIC) and It was a very informative hour and a quarter. Parents also got to work in collaborative groups to solve a challenging maths problem. Some of the key messages from the evening included:

Mathematics is culturally embedded within everyone’s life and culture - hairdresser, building - to do anything, you have to have maths.

Maths is something that can be learnt by everyone - inclusive and respectful learning cultures are created - we want the students to know everybody can do maths

Playing with maths and being creative is an important part of learning maths We learn maths by working together - as children work together they learn prosocial skills not

antisocial skills - they learn to listen and unpack what they are talking about Learning maths involves taking risks and struggling with problems - teaches children resilience Students become flexible, and open to other’s perspectives The focus is on explaining and justifying the children’s maths thinking

On the next page are some examples of the problems our children have worked on this term. You may like to try these at home.

Enjoy the rest of your week everyone.

Each studio is planning a stall to raise money. Korimako decided to run a die throw. Before the day the students needed to work out what prizes they were likely to need. The students decided there would be different ways customers could win a prize.

WALKATHON SUCCESS – THANK YOU! Children Walk the Length of N.Z! (And some)

Our Walkathon was a great success with 650 children, plus teachers and family members joining in the fun last Tuesday afternoon.

Windsor and Burwood children walked 2.4km (460km in total) Otakaro and Travis children walked 4.1 km (790km in total) Ruru and Korimako children walked 5.8km (1380 km in total) That’s over 2 600km altogether -equivalent to walking from Cape Reinga to Bluff and back to Christchurch. What an amazing effort from everyone. Please pass on our thanks to your family, friends, neighbours and workmates who supported our fundraising efforts so generously. Prize winners will be announced at our school Learning Celebration on Friday this week and the total money raised will also be revealed. All are welcome!
