Text: follow WaitakiriSchool to 8987 Payments can be made into our School account 03 1700 0622075 025 Oscar account 03 1700 0622075 026 Dear parents and whanau What a positive start to the year! I had the pleasure of spending the afternoon and night at camp with three of our senior classes at Wainui on Monday. What a fantastic group of young people. They were having an absolute blast exploring the outdoors, taking on challenges, learning and playing together. Later today I will head back to Wainui to spend some time with another three classes. Our school camps really showcase all that is great about kiwi culture - including the wonderful group of parents who take annual leave from their work to support their children and our school - fantastic! I am in the final stages of preparing our Charter and Strategic Plan. It is really quite exciting to see the achievement of the combined schools at the end of 2013. At that time the number of children who were meeting or exceeding the standards in writing was 83%, maths 88% and reading 89%. This is a great achievement and is part of the pattern of continuous improvement evident at Windsor since 2010 and I am sure progress is also evident for Burwood families. Our goal is for 95% of children to be at or exceeding the standard in reading, writing and maths by 2017. With great teaching, strong support from home and the best resources I know we can achieve this. We also have a goal that all of our learners will feel safe (culturally, emotionally and physically) at Waitākiri School. I am confident that with your support we can achieve these goals. The year has started well and children are quickly into learning routines, our Campuses are functioning well and teachers are very busy ensuring that they know your child, have in place appropriate (yet challenging) learning opportunities and that our children are becoming ‘learning heroes’. I am spending as much time as possible visiting classes and have been pleased with the way that our children are taking responsibility for their learning. Very soon we will have our new home learning programme up and running. Shortly teachers will initiate a range of additional learning opportunities through lunchtime clubs. Two teachers are investigating the best way to meet the needs of the many gifts and talents of our children. They expect to have a plan in place to start in term 2. There are a lot of great things going on at Waitākiri School. In Week 11 you will get to spend some time with your child and his/her teacher and together set some learning goals for 2014 at 3 Way Learning Conferences.

Our Board of Trustees has started the process for a newly elected Board for Waitākiri School. One of the things the Board has to consider in the next few months is a proposal from the new Waitākiri School PTA for the continuation or otherwise of the Tuck Shops. They will be in contact with you this term to get your views on this. Take care and I look forward to seeing you soon. Kind regards Neill O'Reilly Principal

You are welcome to come to the Wetlands Foyer and browse through the collection of material we have available for parents. Help yourself to pamphlets, or brochures. You are also welcome to borrow any of the books and DVD’s. Leave your name and contact with Lesley at the office if you do borrow something. Also available for parents to read at both campuses are the BOT and PTA minutes.

CHILDREN WITH MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS For your child's safety and wellbeing please ensure the office at your child's campus is aware of any medical conditions/concerns your child has. Again for all of the children's safety, please be aware that all medication must be held in the sickbay and an authorisation form completed. This includes asthma inhalers. Any questions please feel free to call us. TUCK SHOP Just some reminders for parents and children. We received quite a few orders without names or room numbers. Orders can be put in an envelope with the name and room number written on them. This will make it easier if you want to drop the order in the drop box on the tuck shop counter. Please ensure that the envelope contains the right money and does not require change. Children must eat their lunch and be excused by the duty teacher before they come and get their juicies.

CHILD CAR SEAT RESTRAINTS The Law provides that from 1 November 2013 mandatory use of child restraints in vehicles was extended by two years, with all children now legally required to be correctly secured in an approved restraint until their seventh birthday. NOTICE OF WORKS

Clare Park, Greenhaven Drive and Burwood Road - BURWOOD 20 February 2014 You will have recently been advised by SCIRT of sewer replacement work to be carried out within the Clare Park access drive and along Burwood Road. This work has coincided with the installation of a new water supply scour line by Clemence Drilling. It is necessary and more cost effective to carry out both of these jobs in the same time frame. Shayne Higgs Drainage (contracted to Clemence Drilling) will be laying a new 525mm pipe from the creek alongside Clare Park to a new sump on Burwood Road (outside the MED/Orion building by the Community Hall - see map below). His crew will be following immediately behind the Dower crew, who are laying the sewer. This will result in installation work extending by around 10 – 14 days from the 3rd February to 17th March dates proposed earlier in the SCIRT notice. Both Shane Higgs Drainage and Clemence Drilling will endeavour to complete work as promptly as practicable and to minimise any on-going disruption to those being affected by these tasks. Provisions for ongoing access (park and equestrian stakeholders) will continue as described in the SCIRT notice. The initial contact for the scour line work will be Peter Farrant (027) 327 7510 or [email protected] .

Regards

Peter Farrant for Clemence Drilling
