Argumentation: More Than Just Persuasion
This is the part where you write stuff down.
Argument• Uses evidence, logic, and
reasoning to express a point of view and uncover a truth
Persuasion• Aggressively seeks to change
the readers’ opinion and stimulate an action based on the author’s “truth.”
Here are the elements to writing an
argument.
Claims Making claims:
What exactly is a claim?A statement that reveals a person’s position on an issue
Warrants What is a warrant?
The warrant is the evidence that proves your claim.
Claim or Warrant?
“Athletes are role models because of the hard work they do every day.”
Claim or Warrant?
“Violent video games caused fifteen deaths in 2012.”
Claim or Warrant?
“School uniforms are good because they make it harder for intruders to
enter a school.”
Claim or Warrant?
“The average amount of homework a student has each night is two to four
hours.”
CounterclaimsWhat’s the point of a counterclaim?
It gives the writer the appearance of being unbiased, instead relying on logical reasons that are supported by facts and evidence to support claims.
What’s a counterclaim to the argument?
“College athletes should get paid for their participation in sports because of how much money they bring back to their schools and
because of the amount of hard work they put into their sports.”
