1st Community Bank receives November Business of Month awardRockport-Fulton Chamber of Commerce Board Members, Business

Builders, Bay Blazers, and staff were joined by guests on Thursday, November 1 celebrating recognition of 1st Community Bank as the Business of the Month for November. This honor was bestowed upon this establishment for scoring high on the matrix in the areas of community involvement, years of service, and store appearance.

1st Community Bank has been in business in Rockport for 4 ½ years and has been actively involved in the community. They are recognized for that “small town” attitude to embrace change and be flexible, while embracing technology, the community and its youth, while still focusing on the area businesses that serve the locals and out of town customers also. 1st Community Bank reinvests in homes and businesses here in South Texas. The list of their products and services goes on and on just like their service to the area.

Eric Heller, Vice President/ Bank Manager has summed up 1st Community Bank’s dedication to the community best, “We believe in giving back to the community.” They live up to those words through their financial support to the Rockport Center for the Arts, their giving to the Texas Maritime Museum, Seafair and HummerBird Celebrations, financial literacy to the schools, working with Warriors United, sponsoring the Heroes’ Cup and serving on Board of Directors for several community entities. Right after Hurricane Harvey hit they were open and cashing checks for customer/non-customers because they saw a need and met it. They continued that momentum by offering internet access and feeding 5,000 people after the devastation. Another notable item is all the décor inside the bank was purchased from local businesses.

Be sure to stop by at 1st Community Bank located at 1626 Highway 35 North, Rockport and offer your congratulations for this great achievement. Harvey, economy..............................................................................................................................Cont'd from Page 1volunteers helping our community. To date, more than 80 homes have been, in the process of repair, replaced and/or rebuilt.

Small Business FundGrants to local businesses were made possible through the hard work and perseverance of the Rockport-Fulton Chamber Foundation. Through donors from

all over the nation, the Rockport-Fulton Chamber Foundation raised more than $400,000 specifically for Small Businesses. The stewardship of funds raised to support local small businesses has been instrumental in the economic recovery of our community post-Harvey. To date, more than 200 small businesses in Rockport-Fulton have received grant funds through this program in a three-round funding series. Through partnerships and many donors across the nation, the funds were made available by the Rockport-Fulton Chamber Foundation. Special recognition goes to the Coastal Bend United, a network of six local Chambers of Commerce; matching funds of the Rebuild Texas Fund, a project of the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation; the Meadows Foundation and many, many donors across the nation who for without their support and efforts this would not have been possible.

Economic ActivityThe Rockport-Fulton Chamber of Commerce has made it a major focus to keep the economy stimulated as best as possible post Harvey. Through the creation

of the Comeback Campaign, a grant of $252,500 from the Rebuild Texas Fund, a $50,000 ad campaign enticing traffic to our community within a 50-mile radius, a constant flow of publicity, creation of events and activities, formation of an Economic Development Department. To date, sales tax totals continue in the double-digit increases over the previous year and pre-Harvey percentages. Venue Tax, a 2 percent tax on any visitor staying overnight in Aransas County, has generated more than $250,000 in revenue in 2018 under difficult conditions with only 50 percent of rooms available. This fund previous to Hurricane Harvey was reaching the $480,000 mark. Although this is a significant shortfall, we are grateful the 2018 year has passed and hotels and condos (all newly remodeled) are coming back on the market by Spring of 2019.

The recovery has been difficult for everyone. No one in our county has had an easy ride in some form or another. As we push through 2019, we need to keep the momentum and stay focused on the horizon. We have a lot to be thankful for and a lot of bigger and better things will be coming our way. I am just proud of our Chamber of Commerce for being a leader, taking a seat at the table, rolling up our sleeves and pushing through.

community after Hurricane Harvey. At the same time, many small businesses across their county and our county suffered devastating losses. Realizing these enterprises are the backbone of the local economy, and vital to our county's economic future, their Chamber Foundation, as did ours, worked vigorously to provide grants to small businesses. Small businesses provide a bulk of jobs and play a major role in funding local government services. Statistics show that 45% of small businesses don't recover after such devastation. The biggest obstacle for many business owners are funds needed for repairs to their facilities and equipment, re-stock their inventory or make payroll. While there are countless government programs, non profits, and corporate giving agencies to provide resources for residents and public infrastructure, there are no, or very few resources, outside of a loan, for small businesses. We, at both Chambers, changed that with a grant distribution program.
