First Reading: Deuteronomy 30:10-14 Moses tells the people that the law of God is not “too mysterious and remote.” Rather, it is within our hearts, waiting to be carried out in daily life. Second Reading: Colossians 1:15-20 Here is a primitive Christian hymn, sounding like the prologue to John’s gospel, used by the author to support the purpose of the letter: Christ has a pivotal role in creation. Gospel: Luke 10:25-37 Our personal mission in life, when carried out as best we can, merits eternal life. A chief component of that life is one’s love of neighbor, exemplified by the nameless Samaritan in Jesus’ famous story.

Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson There are so many derogatory stories and jaun-diced jokes about lawyers that one wonders why anyone would aspire to be one. That is sad when one ponders all the good that an upright lawyer can do for people and the smooth running of a civilized society. The unnamed legal scholar in this weekend’s Gospel gives Jesus the correct answer for how one secures eternal life according to the Law he knows. But it seems the man may have been troubled by his observance, because he “wanted to justify himself.” Most likely he had what we might call “a people problem.” He may have been prejudiced, or knew he had an inflated opinion of himself. Whatever it was, Jesus was quick to spot it, and goes on to tell the man what we know as “the parable of the Good Samaritan.” We note the lawyer’s problem in being unable even to say “the Samaritan” in his answer to Jesus’ question about the authentic neighbor. Now here we are on a summer Sunday more than twenty centuries later, in a racially troubled society heatedly debating its immigration policy. Add to that problem the one concerning the di-vide between the “haves” and the “have nots” in our society.

Today’s Gospel, preceded by St. Paul’s descrip-tion of Our Lord’s identity and Deuteronomy’s prescription for a God-fearing way of life presents much food for thought. We admit that Sacred Scripture always tells us the truth. But the Holy Word also challenges us to take a stand when we have to against the popular opinions on such subjects. Not many of us like such challenges. But we see in the confrontations Our Lord had in His day that it has been this way since the begin-ning. Yet such times can be “teachable mo-ments” for us. In this very special Jubilee Year of Mercy, we know that the lawyer in Our Lord’s story caught the message that the real neighbor was “the one who treated him with mercy.” We are not told if that lawyer took the lesson to heart and went and did likewise. The good news is that we can with the added strength given us by the sacraments, especially the Holy Eucharist, which that lawyer did not have. The big question remains: What will we do as a result for our families, friends and all those in the circle of our world? Be encour-aged. Because one thing that has been noted by a wise thinker: an upright person can never be a downright failure!
