THE KING’S HEAD AT HOLT ANDFESTIVAL FAIRIES WINTER APPEAL

At the beginning of September (Issue 384), we featured an article documenting Amanda Veal’s mission to lead a team at the music festivals held at the Norwich Show Ground to up-cycle left behind sleeping bags, pop up tents and food for the homeless in Norwich.Amanda runs a local knitting, sewing and crochet group in Holt every Thursday morning at the Community Centre, making hand crafted items for local community groups and special projects chosen by the members of Little Star. She said, “this is the second year we have attended the event in Norwich and it has been such a success that I and fellow co-founder AJ Saunders decided we needed to make a separate group of like minded individuals, passionate about their communities and the people who live in them. We have decided to call ourselves Festival Fairies, like the shoemakers elves, the fairies of folklore or Tinkerbell, we appear when everyone has gone. We clear away what is left behind and turn it into something useful for those who need it most.”Another person passionate about his community and helping others less fortunate than himself is local landlord of The King’s Head in Holt, Michael Salmon. On hearing of Amanda’s exploits he wanted to reach out and share his ideas of hosting a clothing drive at the King’s Head throughout December, to aid the homeless and those living in half way hostels locally.Mike, as he is known locally and to his friends, said, “I have great ideas and wanted to share thoughts about doing something special for the homeless this winter. I don’t want the King’s Head to be just a pub but a community hub where local people can meet and spend time together rather than being at home alone. On Sunday evenings we have complimentary hot nibbles created by the chefs on the bar and free pool so that local people have somewhere to be with each other. I want to create a bigger sense of community here in Holt and the King’s Head is a perfect meeting place.”After meeting Mike, Amanda introduced him to her friends at Little Star and their hosts, Rev. John Mills and Carolyn Burn, who run the Community Cafe. Each week The Cafe runs at the Community Centre in Holt from 12noon - 1.30pm, serving a home cooked two course meal to members of the local community. Amanda said, “Every month we see new people coming through the door. Currently the Cafe volunteers are serving 80 people each week and the atmosphere is wonderful, a real sense of community has been achieved by everyone coming together”. Rev. John Mills added: “We have 120 people booked for the Christmas Day meal and it’s going to be a real blessing, I can’t wait,” with Carolyn adding, “Hectic but wonderful!”Launching the appeal Mike said, “throughout December people can bring their items to the King’s Head. From there we can distribute them to people in need in our rural towns as well as the hostels in the city.” Please bring donations of good quality clean coats, jumpers, jeans, trainers or boots, toiletries including feminine care, tins and packets of food, new underwear (please be aware many are malnourished and therefore we need small to medium sizes) including socks and thermal wear, blankets and sleeping bags, during opening hours. For more information or for large donations please [email protected] or call Amanda on 07783 083854. For more information on Little Star, Festival Fairies or Holt Community Cafe please call Amanda.

LAARNING NORFOLK WITH THE BOY SADLER

Episode 4 - An Old HopeHow yer diddlin’, ol’ partners? Still rash free?Cor blass me, ageing is a ruddy nuisance. Despite steadily advancing years I’m still clinging onto my fading youth with arthritic fingers refusing to let go. I hen’t going as far as yoga or a facelift but still do what I can to stay fit. Always loved football and still turn out for Glandford Old Irregulars (2nd XI) most Wednesday afternoons. My pace has gone but my skill and stamina are still the same (absent). My most incisive moves these days involve cutting up the half time oranges. We played terrible last week, lost 13-0. Their centre-forward scored eight. A rummen; six-foot four, broken nose, tattoos, nickname ‘Knuckles’. Mind you St Eulalia’s Convent always field a strong side against us. Maybe we’ll win next week. There’s always hope ... even for an old ‘un.Anyhow, good to see some new faces joining our regulars for another session. This week we’ll be lookin’ at an important part of the Norfolk idiom, the Reverse Acronym (or Backronym). Sound tricky, but thass rarely easy. Sariously. Hare’s a few examples to get you going:-HOLT  -  Handsomely Original Little TownCROMER -  Current Residence Of My Elderly RelativesSHERINGHAM -  Seaside Heritage Endearingly Represented In Nautical Ganseys Hanging At MuseumLETHERINGSETT -  Loveably Eccentric Tourists Have Everything Resting In New Gucci Suitcases Except Their TrousersNice, hent ‘it. Now they’re the clean ones. There were some more ... er ... robust examples but the publishers weren’t having none of it. In fact they called me a name and told me to pull myself together. They’re probably right. Lovely people though.Right, gotta go, can feel my hamstring pulling. Until next time, my beauties. Chow, altergether.Twitter: @TheBoySadler

HOLIDAY COMPLAINTS!(We’re not really a nation of complainers ...... are we?)Below are some actual guest’s complaints about their holidays:On my holiday to Goa in India, I was disgusted to find that almost every restaurant served curry. I don’t like spicy food at all.A guest at a Novotel in Australia complained his soup was too thick and strong. He was inadvertently slurping the gravy at the time.

THEATRE EXPANSION PROJECT READY TO TAKE CENTRE STAGE A popular pint-sized seaside theatre is set to press ahead

with its plan to get a little bit bigger.Sheringham Little Theatre aims to add a multi-purpose room on a flat roof to give more space for rehearsals, meetings, overspill from its Hub café bar, and for community hire. The Little Bit Bigger project stalled this year due to planning issues, which have now been overcome and permission granted. In 2018 the venue aims to top up funding including from grants and make a start on building. Chairman Richard Ellis told the annual meeting: “Forty per cent of the funding is in the bag, from tax rebates and a community contribution from a housing development in the town. We are fine-tuning the costs and will be seeking grants for the balance, with the aim of making a start in 2018”, he added. Other highlights from the past year included:• The theatre returning a small profit, around £3,000, having reduced its reliance on council funding, but for which it was still grateful to plug a funding gap.• Successful summer drama and panto seasons, and better attendances for cinema and satellite screenings. • A trustees ‘away day’ which prioritised: drawing up a fundraising strategy; increasing theatre comfort including seating; improving the website and ticketing system; and planning for the diamond anniversary of its summer drama season in 2020.

Mr Ellis praised the efforts of the theatre staff and army of volunteers without whom it could not survive. He was re-elected chairman and Lord Walpole as president for a 44th consecutive year. Theatre director Debbie Thompson reported a busy year including a community production of Oliver in tribute to theatre stalwart Mike Thame which ‘showed Sheringham Little Theatre at its best’ with all generations working together. New ventures, some resulting from public feedback at last year’s annual meeting, included special Halloween events, children’s shows and amateur dramatics. Plans were progressing for 2018’s summer season and panto, while a youth production of Bugsy Malone would harness a new wave of younger children, she added.Find out more about the theatre programme, and how to get involved, at www.sheringhhamlittletheatre.com.

THE POWER OF ADVERTISING!When I came up with the idea of forming the Holt MotorCycle Club, the general consensus was that if I found six members I would be doing really well. I’m a great believer in the power of the printed word, so a quarter-page advertisement was placed in the Holt Chronicle; this modern social media and email stuff is okay, but, how did it go?There were four people at the venue by the time I arrived but we soon ran out of chairs, as people were still arriving 40 minutes later. Eventually we numbered 26, so its official, the Holt MotorCycle Club is alive and well! Our first proper social meeting will be at The Lawns Hotel, Holt, on Monday 5th February 2018 at 7.30pm. We will feature in Holt Chronicle’s Forthcoming Events but if you can’t wait, just telephone me on 01263 711536 or email [email protected] for a copy of our first bulletin – yes, it is in print already!John Lewis, The Holt Biker

IAN AND CALLUM AREWALKING HOME FOR CHRISTMAS!

Local man, Ian Barber, is walking 13 miles with his 10 year old son, Callum, in order to support Walking With The Wounded’s Christmas appeal: Walking Home For Christmas.Walking With The Wounded (WWTW), whose head office is located in Stody, Melton Constable, supports ex-servicemen and women to develop new careers outside the military, re-integrate into society and provide long term security for themselves and their families. Funds raised by the Walking Home For Christmas campaign will enable WWTW to change the lives of more than 400 men and women who have little to look forward to this Christmas.

Ian and Callum will be walking from Ian’s office at M+A Partners in Cromer, along with Skye the Beagle, on Friday 22nd December. They will then walk along the coast path to Holt. Ian is a long standing supporter of the charity and successfully completed the London Marathon for

Walking With The Wounded earlier this year. Andy Sloan, Events Manager at WWTW said: “Too many of our ex-military have little to look forward to this Christmas. They’ve walked in far more dangerous environments for us, so it is the least we can all do to organise a walk for them.”Please support Ian and Callum via their Just Giving page:

https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/IanBarber8Alternatively, a simple walk is all it takes and there’s still plenty of time to get involved! Visit www.walkinghomeforchristmas.com for more information.

AS UK PREPARES FOR PLUNGING TEMPERATURES,MAKE SURE BIRDS DON’T GET A FROSTY RECEPTION

IN YOUR GARDEN THIS WINTER• Met Office predict freezing temperatures in some parts of the UK during December• As birds struggle to survive the cold snap, your garden can become a haven this winter• RSPB suggests three simple measures for helping your much loved birds including introducing wildlife friendly food to make your garden inviting for birds• Simple tips and tricks can improve your garden birds’ chances of survival throughout the tough winter months With the Met Office forecasting a drop in temperature for most of the UK, the RSPB is challenging people to turn their gardens into a haven for birds by topping up their feeders, filling up their bird baths and providing shelter for our feathered friends during the frosty weather. After benefitting from a mild autumn, birds will begin to struggle as the cold snap kicks in and natural food sources start to dwindle. The nature charity says there are three key things that birds will need this winter: food, water and shelter. To keep their energy up during the colder months, the best way to help your garden birds is by providing them with a variety of food, but fatty food will be especially helpful. For example, fat balls or homemade bird cakes, which only take a few minutes to make and can be a great children’s activity, are perfect for your feathered friends. These can be made cheaply with kitchen scraps and lard. If you prefer, seeds, fruits or dried mealworms are also among birds’ favourite snacks.Another vital support for vulnerable birds is fresh water for drinking and bathing. Finding sources of water can be hard for birds when there’s

been a frost, but with a simple trick you can help to keep a patch of water ice-free. The RSPB recommends floating a small ball, such as a ping-pong ball, on the surface of the water as a light breeze will stop an area of water from freezing. Finally, providing shelter from the harsh weather is extremely important. By carefully planting dense hedges such as privet or hawthorn, or allowing ivy or holly to grow: you’ll be giving birds a great place to roost in and shelter from the elements. Nestboxes can also make good roosting sites. RSPB Wildlife Advisor, Claire Thomas said: “Throughout the colder months some of our favourite birds, such as blackbirds, robins and blue tits, will be busy desperately searching for food, water and shelter to survive. You can make a real difference to birds in your garden and improve their chances of surviving the winter. Birds don’t need much but by providing a supply of food, a patch of unfrozen water and somewhere to shelter from the elements, you will be rewarded with great views of wildlife in your back garden.”Ensuring your garden is filled with food now will improve your chances of having a successful Big Garden Birdwatch. Don’t forget, the RSPB’s annual event is on Saturday 27th, Sunday 28th and Monday 29th January 2018. To take part, all you need to do is spend one hour at any time over Big Garden Birdwatch weekend noting the number of avian visitors to your garden or nearby park. You can sign up for this year’s Big Garden Bird Watch from 13th December. For more ways to give nature a home in your garden visit, https://ww2.rspb.org.uk/get-involved/activities/give-nature-a-home-in-your-garden/

REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY

Dear Caroline,I refer to Mick Leary’s letter in Issue 390 on 1st December. I could not agree more with the sentiments he expressed. My own father served in the Army in the First World War, was gassed and attributed his later heart disease to that appalling incident. My mother lost two brothers aged 19 and 23 in that same war. My older brother flew in Lancaster bombers in World War II, was shot down twice and suffered blackouts from head injuries for some time after the war.I was a child during that war but well remember the devastation caused to the town where I lived by the Luftwaffe and the fear I felt at the sound of their engines.Although I lost my dear husband in June of this year and am not in the best of health having nursed him for four years, I still stood in my kitchen for the two-minute’s silence. We should never forget the sacrifice these men (and women) made for our safety. It is not a glorification of war but a deep mark of respect to those brave men and women.Yours sincerely,Pauline Sweet

THANK YOUDear Caroline,Very many thanks indeed for finding space to publicise our event at the Lighthouse in Sheringham. ‘Ring Out the Old, Ring In the New’ featured some amazing performances by Coast Singers, Hummingbirds and Gallus at the Lighthouse in Sheringham. Lots of people came along and thoroughly enjoyed themselves and it raised some worthwhile money for local good causes as well. I am truly grateful for your support in helping to raise awareness of this unique occasion, just the sort of community get-together that the Chronicle covers very effectively and I think your readers appreciate knowing about. Yours sincerely,Ivan Ball

ASK CINDY!Dear Caroline,“You need to ask Cindy at Holt Garden Centre, she’s a whiz on plant diseases”, was what one of the senior citizens at Holt allotments told me.I had found a whole row of tulip bulbs covered in a suspiciously ominous white dusty mould. So I took a handful to Cindy. She thought it was just a normal mould but I wasn’t convinced. “Leave it with me; I’ll call you,’’ she said, so I retreated to my allotment.Sure enough, when I got home later there was a message, “All OK, I checked with the Royal Horticultural Society and it is just normal mould.”Thanks Cindy!Yours sincerely,Richard Moore(a grateful novice Holt allotment holder)

THE GENDER OF GODDear Caroline,Amid the Seasonal Saturnalia, some clergy hope to remind people of what Xmas was originally about. One local vicar explains that God actually arrived in ‘human form’ to show divine love, although doing so only after many millennia of wars, slavery and idolatry, and then spending a mere three years in this caring mission before getting killed. The story was that Baby Jesus had no human father, but was uniquely conceived by a virgin. If so, surely the normal SRY male gene was missing. “Some are eunuchs from birth” (Matthew 19.12). Could Christ have been ‘transgender’? Wouldn’t that make ‘Yeshua’ a celibate member of the LGBTQI community, and as fashionable today in ‘sexual identity’ as ‘politically correct’ in alleged attitudes towards national armies and global altruism?According to Mark Wayne’s ‘Jesus is Black’ and other studies, the Word-made-Flesh in ancient Israel was also a Person of Colour. How appropriate for what little remains

of the ‘Church’ of what little remains of ‘England’! No ‘Very Reverend’ would today be unfrocked for worshiping an Ethnic Transgender. So stuffed with turkey and blotto with booze, after opening expensive unwanted presents, we unreconstructed white-skinned heterosexuals can wallow in even more collective guilt for the sins of patriarchy, racism, colonialism, capitalism, slavery, apartheid, and of course the Holocaust. Yours sincerely,David Ashton

ROBERT ‘BOB’ JENKINSON

The miracle of Christmas is that God chose to come to be with us in Jesus Christ. This is the message of Christmas and thus the message of our faith.Emmanuel (Jesus is with us). This is what our children really need to know. Jesus is not only the Baby of Bethlehem but also the Son who was born to live for

our righteousness and to die for our sins. Christ is the missing piece to life. Without Him our lives are incomplete.Jesus is with us! This is what our young people need to know. In the middle of their trials, identity issues, betrayals by friends, struggles to find their way in the world and dreams for a great future, the Baby of Bethlehem, now the enthroned Christ of all Creation, is with them. His salvation gives hope to them and to you. This is the message of hope to single people, young families with children and without children, empty-nesters and young retired folks and senior ones. Even ministers need this message. The light we long for is the Light we have been given. To receive Him is to be warmed by that Light and shown a new way through the trials and sorrows and even joys that we have on our journey. Our journey as a church continues. And we are thankful to be on that journey with you. We thank God for you and we commend you to the Shepherd and saviour of our souls, Jesus Christ. This Christmas we want to worship Him with you, happy and confident that in Him all things turn out for our good and His glory. Stay blessed everyone.Love, Prayers and thoughts from Rev Cliff and Christine Shanganya, Holt Methodist Church. Email: [email protected]

CHRISTMAS MESSAGE TO ALL'ENJOY THE MIRACLE OF CHRISTMAS

NEARLY 500 FIREARMS HANDED IN DURING

SURRENDERA firearms and ammunition surrender in Norfolk and Suffolk has been heralded a great success with nearly 500 firearms handed in.The surrender, which ran from Monday 13th November to Sunday 26th November, encouraged people to hand over their unlicensed and unwanted guns without fear of prosecution. In total, 280 firearms were surrendered in Norfolk and 208 in Suffolk as well as a large quantity of ammunition.Richard Kennett, Firearms Manager for both Norfolk and Suffolk Constabularies, said: “The surrender was a real success and we’re extremely pleased with how many firearms have been handed in.We had 225 shotguns handed in, as well as 38 hand guns, including a number of self-loading pistols, an AK47 fully automatic assault rifle and even a walking stick gun.Although gun crime isn’t a big problem in our counties, it’s important we take measures such as this to reduce the chances of dangerous weapons falling into the wrong hands.”A number of imitation firearms, rifles, air weapons and deactivated firearms were also handed in to officers at police stations. The guns and ammunition will now either be destroyed or, if they are of particular historic value, donated to a licensed museum. For further advice please contact the firearms department by calling 01953 424141. For more details about firearms legislation visit the National Ballistics Intelligence Service (NABIS) website http://www.nabis.police.uk/Legislation.

THE CHURCH OF ST. MARY THE VIRGIN, KELLINGThe Village Church of Kelling, which dates from the thirteenth Century, has a 11.00am Service each Sunday, either of Matins or of Holy Communion and an Evensong when there is a fifth Sunday in the month.St.Mary’s is set in a large open churchyard on the Holt Road a mile from the Village. The Church contains many interesting features, including a 14th Century Easter Sepulchre and a window and a remarkable painting both depicting connections with local bird-life and St.Francis of Assisi. The Church draws a congregation partly from outside the Village from those who value traditional services using the words of the Book of Common Prayer.

OUR LOCAL CHURCHESST. ANDREW’S, THURSFORD

Nestling in a lane remote from the village centre, St. Andrew’s contains many signs of patronage of the manor close by. The remarkable mid-Victorian eastern window shows the 12 apostles and three scenes of the life of Christ. North and South are two further pairs, including a saint whose name coincides with that of the contemporary local gentry. A memorial to a wartime RAF pilot occupies an otherwise bare southern wall. The chancel, seating over a hundred people, bears signs of periodic renovations that reflect contemporary tastes rather than a desire for uniformity. Thus a northern aisle has massive rounded pillars supporting round arches, whilst those in the southern aisle have three octagonal-faced pillars and four pointed arches. The wooden pulpit is huge and could easily accommodate three people. The western end of the nave contains a cluster of medieval memorials and a huge sarcophagus. Hidden in the vestry are the Royal Arms of 1579 bearing the inscription Qvene Elizabeth.Services at St. Andrew’s are monthly. The Church is occasionally locked (with a key available at the Churchwarden’s house nearby). Local support is evident in the occurrence of frequent concerts and other social events.

SAINT ANDREW’S & ALL SAINTS NEWSThe Parish of Holt with High Kelling

Dear friends, Good News rarely makes the News! If it does it is often hidden under a blanket of bad news or else rarely spoken about. Casually glancing at today’s headlines, it makes depressing reading; failure of Brexit talks, North Korea tests missiles, more inflammatory tweets from President Trump, a rise in the number of children and pensioners living in poverty, violence and bloodshed are but a few. The trouble is that these bad headlines can distort our world view. We can so easily conclude that the world is in a mess and the future is bleak, that crime is out of control, that we cannot trust anyone and it is not safe to go out in the dark. Of course, we cannot deny the real problems the world faces, we cannot bury our heads in the sand and pretend that things are fine when obviously they are not. But we should not allow bad news to cause us to give up hope or lose our faith in humanity. Amidst the bad news in the headlines today there is indeed good news. “Giant African diamond to benefit poor.” The government of Sierra Leone is selling a 709 carat rough cut diamond for an expected $50 million, half of which will go directly towards bringing clean water, electricity, schools, medical facilities, bridges and roads to the community where the stone was discovered. There was also a story about a vet treating the dogs of homeless people, and the hero cop who stopped an overturned van from toppling over a bridge by holding onto it with his bare hands! Good news can restore hope and faith in humanity. At the heart of our Christmas celebration is the Good News story of the birth of Jesus Christ. It is good news not just because it is a story about the birth of a child but because it is about God’s gift of love to the world. In the child born to Mary, God has revealed himself and his love for the whole of humanity. By taking human form God has affirmed our humanity and in the selfless love of Jesus he has saved us and has shown us what we are all capable of. With faith and hope in the child born in a stable God has restored his image of love in all of us, offering us an alternative way of being, living and loving and this is Good News for all of us. I am very much aware that for some Christmas is marred with bad news, sadness and difficulties. I sincerely hope and pray that the good news of love which we see when we gaze upon the Christ-child and experience in the love and friendship of others will fill us all with joy, peace and hope. Every blessing to and yours this Christmas.

Fr. Howard

HOW MUCH WILL CHRISTMAS COST YOU?

‘Deciding to drink and drive could cost you dearly this Christmas’, that’s the message from Norfolk and Suffolk Constabularies as both forces prepare to launch their Christmas campaigns. The month-long operation against driving under the influence of drink or drugs will see officers in both counties carrying out extra patrols and roadside checks. Any driver who is stopped due to concerns over the manner of their driving, a vehicle defect or is involved in a collision will be breathalysed.Specific time slots at Norwich and Ipswich Magistrates Courts have been reserved to deal with those caught drink or drug driving. This effectively means that offenders could now lose their licence within 24 hours of being breathalysed whilst facing additional fines.Throughout the campaign roads policing officers will be using social media to share messages and provide updates on campaign results using @NSRoadsPolicing and via Norfolk and Suffolk Constabularies Facebook pages. Chief Inspector Kris Barnard, head of the joint Roads Policing and Firearms Operations Unit, said: “Anyone caught faces a minimum 12-18 month ban, however, deciding to drink and drive could cost you more than just your licence. Think seriously about how having no licence could affect your life; would you lose your job? How would you get the kids to school? How are you going to see family or friends this year? Remember, it is your decision whether you drink and drive. You are responsible. You must face the consequences which could include a serious collision where you or someone else is injured or killed. Drink driving is just not worth the risk.”The campaign runs until Sunday 1st January and will see officers carrying out roadside checks throughout the day and night, including early morning checks, as well as intelligence-led enforcement activity. The public are also encouraged to report any concerns relating drink or drug driving anonymously using Crimestoppers on http://www.crimestoppers-uk.org/or 0800 555 111.

CREDIT CRUNCH COOKINGChristmas Dinner, All Wrapped Up!

If you fancy something a little different for your Christmas Dinner this year, or you have a Pescatarian coming around, here’s a wonderful dish that is pure indulgence, yet so easy to produce. It makes a fabulous supper at any time of the year in fact, but with the special offers around at the moment on salmon, it’s a good time to give this recipe a go. It also makes a little fillet go a long way, yet is so rich and creamy that no one will notice that you are on a budget! It’s a lovely dish to do for a dinner party, as it looks so impressive yet won’t have you slaving over a hot stove all night. Serve with your Christmas dinner accompaniments, or just with mash and seasonal veg as I have here.Cost wise, it was around £1.80 per person for the dish ... well within most budgets for such a lavish dinner. If you’re having the traditional turkey Christmas, why not serve this Christmas Eve or Boxing Day, to ring the changes over the festive period?Salmon en Croute (Serves 2)2 salmon fillets (about 4oz each, use the fat fillets rather than the skinny long ones, I bought 4 for 5.50 from Tesco)1 pack ready rolled puff pastry (I used Jusrol)Large handful fresh spinachTablespoon mascarponeFlat teaspoon dried dillA little double cream (no more than a tablsp)A little lemon juiceFreshly grated nutmegSalt and pepper1 egg, beatenWilt the spinach by placing in the microwave for about 2 mins, squeeze out the excess water. Chop into small pieces using scissors. Beat the mascarpone with a little cream to loosen it, the dill, a little lemon juice to flavour it, a little nutmeg and finally the spinach and season with salt and pepper.Place each salmon fillet on the rolled-out pastry skin side down (remove skin if you like), on the left long side leaving about an inch on the left and a couple of inches between them.Cut the pastry in half between the fillets. Brush the edges of each piece of pastry with the beaten egg.Put half of the cheese mixture on the top of each fillet, and fold over the largest piece of pastry over the top, enclosing the fish. Press firmly down, trim any uneven edges to neaten, and press along the edges with a fork to really seal it all in.Place on a baking tray, and then brush all over the parcels with beaten egg.Put into preheated oven on 180-190° depending on how hot your oven is, and bake for 40-45 mins (if the tops are browning too much loosely cover with a piece of foil).Serve piping hot with potatoes and seasonal veg, or a generous salad.

10 Station Road Holt NR25 6BS Sebastian Deans (MRSS, T) practices Reiki and Shiatsu at The Holt Holistic Centre on Mondays and Wednesdays, sessions last 1hr-15mins or 45mins.Sebastian first learned Reiki in 2000 and began studying Shiatsu in 2004, has been practising in Holt since 2007 and is currently a Teacher in the Norwich Shiatsu College and running his own workshops.Reiki is a Japanese practice with various simple techniques fundamentally connecting a person with the natural intelligence and harmonizing factor of Life… some say Universal Energy (the meaning of Rei-Ki). Many people practice without touching the receiver but Sebastian has a very light contact unless appropriate to be above the surface, as a receiver you stay fully clothed.Shiatsu is also from Japan, meaning ‘finger-pressure’ it is more massage like but with a deep and sophisticated system of viewing and treating health using both Traditional Chinese and more modern holistic Japanese backgrounds. The practitioner uses mainly palms and thumbs with a deep yet sensitive contact to encourage balance and wholeness of all our systems - physical and psychological. Shiatsu has been proven to help reduce symptoms of stress and aid recovery from injury, many people have reported relief from conditions such as IBS, skin disorders, menstrual difficulties and depression. The Holt Holistic Centre has been running for approximately 15 years and always encourages professional practice and friendly service; if the treatments of your chosen practitioner seem not to be fitting your needs we are always happy to refer you to an appropriate practitioner for you ... this is at the heart of positive recovery. With Christmas nearing Sebastian is offering a FREE treatment when booking a block of 4!If you are interested in treatments, workshops or would like some tutorials for your own practice please contact01263 711898 or email Sebastian [email protected].

NORTH NORFOLK DISTRICT COUNCIL SUCCESSFULLY PROSECUTES FLY-TIPPER

Council continues to crack down on anti-social behaviourNorth Norfolk District Council has successfully brought another prosecution for fly-tipping as it continues to crack down on this form of anti-social behaviour.John Jonas, 45, of East Runton, near Cromer, pleaded guilty at Norwich Magistrates Court last week to illegally dumping waste, including clothes, toys, cardboard and paper, in a field along Hall Road, Cromer, in April last year. He was fined £600 and ordered to pay more than £1,000 towards prosecution costs.Cllr Annie Claussen-Reynolds, North Norfolk District Council Portfolio Holder for Waste and Environmental Services, said: “This demonstrates once again that we are serious about tackling this issue, which is a blight on our communities.Whenever we have sufficient evidence to take these matters to court, we will prosecute. There is never an excuse to fly-tip, and we are determined to stamp it out.”

NOTES FOR A NEW YEAR!Following a very successful year in 2017 for the Briston Organ Shows, 2018 kicks off with our New Year Show on 5th January, at the Copeman Centre, Briston. This is a show with a difference - it is entirely home grown (or should that be ... GROAN!). Instead of featuring a top UK organ or keyboard player, we do the whole thing ourselves; local organist entertainer will provide the lively music with some of his pupils, featuring the Hammond organ and Yamaha keyboard. There will be plenty of laughs too, as some of our wonderful band of helpers will throw caution to the wind and participate in a sketch or too to get your chuckle muscles going again after Christmas and there will be a news bulletin highlighting what the Briston locals have been up to in the last year, and it might just feature YOU, so don’t miss it, or you won’t know what your friends are laughing at when they see you in the Co Op!The reason we do this one off ‘do-it-ourselves’ extravaganza (we use the term loosely) is that we like to give something back after enjoying a wonderful year of the best live music, so the proceeds from this show (and there are no expenses taken out) are donated to our chosen charity, the ORBIS Flying Eye Hospital. If you haven’t heard of this wonderful project, have a look at www.orbis.org, last year we made well over £1000 for them, and we want to do even more for them in 2018.If you would like a really good night out, with some great live music, lots of laughs, good company and delicious refreshments available too, do come and join us. Tickets are just £6.00 each and if the cash is flowing a bit thin after the seasonal festivities, you can even pay by credit or debit card; book now by ‘phoning our Carol on 01263 860844.To recap, the date is Friday 5th January, the time is 7.30pm (doors open at 7.00pm) and the venue is the Copeman Centre, Hall Street, Briston. NR24 2LG. The venue is warm, the seats are comfortable, the acoustics are excellent and the ample free parking is right outside the door - and with wide level access, disabled and wheelchair visitors are very welcome too! Do come and join us - a great way to start 2018!

Lasting Powers of Attorney: one size doesn’t fit all ~ Miranda Marshall, Director, Hayes + StorrThis is the third in my series of articles about Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs). Many potential makers of an LPA (known as ‘the Donor’) prevaricate as they feel uncomfortable trusting, even their closest, family members or friends to manage their finances, or to make decisions about their health and welfare, should the time ever come when they cannot do so for themselves. A major advantage of having a professionally drawn up LPA is that effective protections and guidance can be included in the LPA. Badly-worded guidance, restrictions, conditions etc within a home-made LPA can cause problems when having the LPA registered with the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG), even to the extent of making the LPA invalid. Increasingly, I am of the opinion that the intelligent and cautious use of preferences and instructions, in certain situations, not only gets across the personal wishes of the Donor, but provides clear directions and protections. The retired Senior Judge in the Court of Protection, Denzil Lush started a lively debate when in the late summer he went on record as saying he would not put in place a LPA for himself. He said he would prefer to go for the full Court of Protection Deputyship appointment. This is where a formal application is made to the specialist Court charged with the managing of the affairs of the mentally incapable. Few practitioners would recommend this route, other than where there are very major issues which would make it better that authority from the Court is obtained for anything other than routine administration. Applying for the granting of such authority costs £400 each time plus all the professional costs incurred. There is a long wait whilst the matter grinds its way through the Court. So how might I restrict and manage the power of my attorneys should I become mentally incapable of managing my own affairs? This is where your specialist solicitor can provide ‘value added’ service, and usually within their basic fixed-fee cost. Examples of such preferences and instructions are as follows: I might wish to put a cap on the value of financial transactions (or a series of transactions within a timescale) beyond a particular sum, say £5,000, carried out by a single attorney. Transactions for more than that sum could be stipulated to require all attorneys to authorise it. You might state that your attorneys should produce accounts annually, to be circulated among them all; and if any concerns are raised then to be audited by a solicitor or an accountant; or, you might require such an audit in any event. With a LPA for Health and Personal Welfare, you might wish to require all attorneys to be involved with life-sustaining treatment decisions, whilst allowing more routine matters to be decided by a single attorney. Here please do bear in mind that quick decisions often need to be made and having to gather all attorneys (even with modern communication systems) might be slow and so not in your best interests. The important thing is that your LPA can be created as a bespoke document tailored to suit your special needs and wishes and therefore truly to provide peace of mind. This article aims to supply general information, but it is not intended to constitute advice. Every effort is made to ensure that the law referred to is correct at the date of publication and to avoid any statement which may mislead. However no duty of care is assumed to any person and no liability is accepted for any omission or inaccuracy. Always seek our specific advice. If you would like further advice on this matter please contact Miranda on 01328 710210. If you require advice on any other legal matter please call our Holt office on 01263 712 835 or email [email protected].

Refreshments will be served

CONSULTATION on the draft Holt Neighbourhood Plan (Pre-Submission Version)

We have reached an important stage in writing the Holt Neighbourhood Plan - this is called the Pre-Submission Consultation.

Since the last community consultation in June, the Steering Group has been working hard to consider all of your views about priorities for Holt and drafting policies for the Plan. These now form the ‘Pre-Submission’ draft Holt Neighbourhood Plan, which is going out for consultation.

We are now required to consult statutory bodies, local organisations and the wider community for a period of 6 weeks.

The consultation starts on 11th January and closes on 23rd February 2018.

This will be your final chance to comment on the draft Holt Neighbourhood Plan before it is submitted to North Norfolk District Council.

From 11th January, the Neighbourhood Plan and a consultation response form will be available to download from the website at www.holttowncouncil.org You can also view the Plan and pick up a consultation response form at the Town Council offices or Holt Library.

As part of the consultation, we will be holding a community event on 20th January from 10.00am to 1.00pm in the Church Hall. Members of the Steering Group will be on hand if you have any questions about the Plan. Please come along and have a look at the draft Holt Neighbourhood Plan, tell us if you are happy with it or have any other comments you would like us to consider.

NORFOLK COUNTRY COTTAGES GIVES £250 BOOST TO THE NOOK APPEAL

A children’s charity has received a £250 boost in its appeal to build a new hospice courtesy of Norfolk Country Cottages. The Holt-based company, which is the county’s largest independent holiday cottage agency, is proud to be supporting East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) and its nook appeal. The appeal aims to raise £10 million to transform children’s palliative care across Norfolk, including the building of a new hospice, called the nook. The nook will be built on a five-acre woodland site in Framingham Earl just south of Norwich and offer services either unavailable or extremely limited at EACH’s current Norfolk hospice in Quidenham.Tom Ellis, Director of Norfolk Country Cottages, said: “As a family-owned company we understand that enabling children and their families to have the very best palliative care isn’t just a ‘nice to have’ but a ‘must-have’, which is why we believe supporting EACH is so important. Every donation, big and small, helps bring the nook, something that will help transform hospice care for Norfolk families, closer.”Sophie Mayes, EACH Norfolk Corporate Fundraiser, said: “A big thank you to Norfolk Country Cottages for choosing to support the nook appeal. This is yet another example of the county’s business community supporting an extremely important and worthwhile cause. Please get in touch if you’d like to find out more about getting involved.”For more information on EACH and the nook appeal go towww.each.org.uk.For more on Norfolk Country Cottages visitwww.norfolkcottages.co.uk.

UNLUCKY BREAK FOR YOUNG PANTO STAR

A schoolgirl actress rehearsing for a panto role has found herself in the wrong kind of cast, one that is healing a broken arm. Young Ayrelia O’Leary-Leeson was looking forward to being in Sheringham Little Theatre’s upcoming production of the Wizard of Oz. She had already learned songs and dances for roles as a ‘Strictly’ dancer, flying monkey and lifeboatman as one of the local youngsters drafted in to support a professional cast. But instead stepping into the spotlight, she tripped over a goalpost at school just two weeks before curtain up and ended up in hospital A&E instead of the land of Oz.The 12-year-old Sheringham High School student said: “I was really looking forward to being in my third panto, so I am really disappointed. We were just starting to learn the acting parts in rehearsals when I fell over running backwards going to a PE lesson and I knew it was bad because of the angle of my wrist.”Ayrelia, from Plumstead near Holt, had 48 hours in hospital and is now set for another month in a cast to recover but it was a joint decision by her family and the theatre to drop her from the on-stage team. Director Nick Earnshaw said: “It was a really difficult decision because Ayrelia is such a strong and popular member of the cast. We have joked that she took the old acting good luck message of ‘break a leg’ too literally.”She dropped into rehearsals at the weekend to wish her friends in the panto team well and to have Coco the monkey puppet sign her cast.Ayrelia has appeared in the venue’s Peter Pan and Cinderella pantos, and a youth production of the Mikado, and is determined to bounce back in 2018 for Bugsy Malone auditions, plus pantomime next year. The main run of the The Wizard of Oz goes through to New Year’s Day. For tickets and information contact the Sheringham Little Theatre on 01263 822347 or visit www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERSfrom Able Community Care Limited

Question - I live several hundreds of miles away from my elderly parents but usually manage to visit them once a month. At this time I carry out minor jobs for them if there is a need. However, last time I went down my Father had a bruised body because he had carried out a little job “he did not need help with.” He had tried to change a light bulb and had fallen off the chair. Are there any aids or tips you can give to make such a task safer?Answer - There is no device or aid that I know of that will make changing a light bulb a safe activity for an older person. There are a couple of things that can be done to make the situation a little less of a hazard. Firstly, replace existing light bulbs with energy efficient bulbs in order that they do not need replacing so often and secondly, have a reading lamp or other design of lighting where the bulb can be attended to at standing height. These not to be the main lighting of a room but to act as a reserve light until the bulb can be replaced. If your parents have a ‘Good Neighbour’ group in the vicinity then setting up an arrangement with them whereby your parents can call them if a bulb needs replacing should ensure that you can eliminate any future problems. Or alternatively there may be neighbour who they could call on for help.

WOULD YOU PAY MORE COUNCIL TAX FOR POLICING IN NORFOLK?PCC invites you to have your say

Would you pay more council tax to help fund policing in Norfolk? That is the question being posed by the county’s Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC).PCC Lorne Green will soon have to decide whether to increase or freeze the policing element of council tax to fund next year’s policing service and he wants to know what the Norfolk public thinks. By law, the PCC can only raise policing council tax by a maximum of just under 2%, a cap fixed by central government. But, as well as giving Norfolk’s communities the chance to vote for a freeze or a 2% rise for 2018/19, for the first time Lorne will be asking if they would be willing to pay even more if the central government cap is lifted, a possibility in mid-December.“What I am asking is do you support a freeze, keeping policing council tax at last year’s level or do you support a rise? And, if so, please tell me the maximum amount you would be prepared to pay,” said Lorne. He continued, “I am now 18 months into my work as your PCC and, during my time in office, I have become increasingly aware of just how challenging the financial situation is for policing in our county. Grant funding from central government continues to reduce year on year but policing costs are increasing, along with demands for service. If austerity continues, Norfolk Constabulary will need to make cuts of between £2 million and £3 million every year just to cover inflation. The Government has made it clear it expects me to increase the policing element of council tax by the maximum I can to help bridge the gap. That budget gap in 2018/19 is estimated to be £6.8 million. The Chief Constable has recently announced a new policing model for Norfolk which he says will ensure the Force is best placed to tackle the biggest threats to the safety of our communities, while also maintaining neighbourhood policing and being more sustainable in the current financial climate. He also says, however, that further difficult decisions will be needed to balance the 2018/19 policing budget.I, along with other PCCs, have been lobbying central government to look again at police funding and lift the council tax limit above the 2% maximum. This would allow PCCs more flexibility to set council tax levels in response to funding challenges and local policing needs. To help inform my budget decision if that were to happen, I would like to know what you would be prepared to pay next year for policing in Norfolk. Some 58% of Norfolk’s policing budget is funded by central government, meaning your council tax makes up the rest so I want all Norfolk residents to have the opportunity to have their say.”The initial two options Norfolk residents are being asked to consider are: • No Increase in the policing element of council tax. A freeze on the policing element of council tax would mean a funding gap for the Constabulary in 2018/19 of £6.8m. Some £4m of savings have been identified at this stage, including £2m from the frontline local policing

model (Norfolk 2020) announced by the Chief Constable in October. This leaves £2.8m still to find. The Chief Constable says further savings of this magnitude would mean some very difficult choices about even deeper reductions in frontline operational and support functions, mindful that 80% of the budget is staff costs.• Increasing the policing element of Council Tax by just under 2% A council tax increase of just under 2% (the maximum amount currently permitted by central government) is equivalent to 8 pence extra per week (at Band D) and would raise £1.2m. This is not ‘additional money’; it will simply offset an expected £1.2m reduction in central government grant. This would leave the Constabulary with £1.6m of savings to find, in addition to the £4m already identified. The recently announced local policing model would be protected but the Chief Constable says this £1.6m would need to come from other operational and support areas of the budget. This would also mean some difficult decisions for the Constabulary. In addition, if they support an increase, taxpayers are being asked how much they would be prepared to pay if the cap were to be lifted. The options being presented are:• Up to an extra 19 pence per week (a 4.5% increase). This would raise £2.8m which, alongside the £4m of savings already identified would, on present projections, balance the budget for next year. This would mean that the frontline local policing model announced in October would be protected. • Up to an extra 25 pence per week (a 6% increase). This would raise £3.6m and, alongside the £4m of savings already identified, would enable the budget to be balanced. This option would provide an opportunity, on present projections, to make some modest increases in local policing.• Up to an extra 50 pence per week (a 12% increase). This would raise £7.2m and enable significant additional investment in frontline local and operational policing. The consultation will run until until 22nd December and people can have their say by visiting www.norfolk-pcc.gov.uk or by getting in contact with the Norfolk PCC office by pin the following ways:Post: OPCCN, Jubilee House, Building 8, Falconers Chase, Wymondham, NR18 0WWTelephone: 01953 424455 Email: [email protected] copies of the survey are also available on request. The PCC will take his budget proposals to the Norfolk Police and Crime Panel on 6 February 2018.Lorne Green, Norfolk’s Police and Crime Commissioner will be a special guest at the Holt Town Council meeting on Monday 8th January at Holt Community Centre at 7.00pm.All welcome.

WHO SAYS MEN DON’T REMEMBER!A couple were Christmas shopping. The shopping centre was packed and, as the wife walked around, she was surprised to discover that her husband was nowhere to be seen. She was quite upset because they had a lot to do and hence, she became so worried that she called him on her mobile phone to ask him where he was.In a quiet voice he said: “Do you remember the jewellers we went into about five years ago, where you fell in love with that diamond necklace that we couldn’t afford, and I told you that I would get it for you one day?”The wife choked up and started to cry and said: “Yes, I do remember that shop.”He replied: “Well, I’m in the pub next door!”

NEWS FROMHOLT COMMUNITY CENTRE

Chairman’s Chat: At the end of yet another year (don’t they fly by!), it’s appropriate to reflect on the people and events that have made the year meaningful. Of course there are national and international newsworthy items which affect us all; but I was thinking more locally and personally. Sometimes, letters in the Chronicle seem to convey the message that we are a bunch of moaners (‘Whinging Poms’, the Australians call us); and sure enough, there are plenty of things that seem to impose on us, starting with the weather, perhaps! At Christmas time, I’d like to think we could be more positive about our surroundings. For me, it’s been the people who have kept the Community Centre buzzing along that engender hope for the future: the volunteers who turn up week-in week-out to organise the different interest groups: the staff who look after the building, prepare the rooms and keep them clean and orderly: the committee members who are prepared to get involved in whatever is required. For all their efforts, a big ‘thank you’. They make a statement that the Centre has its place in Holt, no matter how many local residents have never passed its lintels (If I wasn’t being positive, I’d say ‘Shame on the guilty ones!’ at this point). More and more people are using the Centre. That’s what we should be positive about and build on, next year and thereafter. Martin

Community Centre Cinema: The film ‘Churchill’ proved to be more of a draw than I was expecting. Brian Cox did a brilliant job of playing Winston Churchill, warts and all. Miranda Richardson was a wonderful foil as Clemmie. The audience was very involved and enjoyed the film very much. That was the last film for this year; our next one is on 31st January 2018 and I am planning to show ‘My Cousin Rachel’, starring Rachel Weisz, who was so good in ‘Denial’; but nothing is booked yet. I will announce the films for the early part of next year after the bookings have been confirmed. Meanwhile, Merry Christmas to all our patrons and I look forward to seeing you in the New Year.June Clarke, Cinema Organiser.

THE WINTER BLUESfrom Lynn Jackson

Christmas can be a difficult time for mental health. We are told it could be a chemical imbalance (although there is no evidence and no blood tests for those claims), hereditary or some sort of brain genetic malfunction that we are born with, a ‘serotonin deficiency’, and those beliefs and lies can lock people down into years of unnecessary suffering, with no hope of ever getting better. Talking to psychiatrists and psychologists is the standard help on offer, along with suppressant drugs that take weeks to act and with their risks of suicide. It’s nice chatting (and pills work short term) but does ‘talking’ take away feeling physically awful? No.The latest new science is all about the micro biome (gut) and the link to our minds. The brain/mind suffering as a secondary symptom and as a consequence of unaware food intolerances, deficiencies and a poor micro biome (gut) that needs specialised support to heal. Something that sadly is not on offer through the NHS, so people suffer for years in silence or take the quick way out of the pain or have a lifetime of sedating drugs trying to live a ‘normal life. The inflammation model for mental illness is well researched and the leading light in all things mental health is Kelly Brogan MD, a holistic psychiatrist. My page called ‘Food for mood swaps’ is where I share all Kelly’s information and research needed to rapidly improve outcomes and anyone can contact me (confidentially) on 01263 860725 or email [email protected].

THE SECRETS OF THE HOLY GRAILTHE SONS OF HEAVEN

Angels lived with The Most High God in the wilderness, they were His ministers His priests, His Holy Ones, they were the ‘Sons of heaven’, as it is written in the Dead Sea Scroll called The Community Rule, column XI, “God has given them to His chosen ones (elect) as an everlasting possession, and has caused them to inherit the lot of the Holy Ones. He has joined their assembly to the Sons of Heaven to be a Council of the Community, a foundation of the Building of Holiness.” God and His Angels lived in heaven. The pit (hell) was, and is still there? A good angel is a spirit of truth. It is written in the Damascus document (CD) column XV, “None of these shall enter into the Community for the Angels of Holiness are [in their midst].” See also the Messianic Rule (lQsa), Rule of War (40285) fragment 1, and The Blessings (lQsb). Angels are Messengers of The New Covenant, they are the Apostles of Christianity. The Dead Sea Scrolls in English is published by Penguin Books. For more secrets see our book THE SECRETS OF THE HOLY GRAIL, available from Crystal Moon Cavern, 1 Mount Street, Cromer, a new age spiritual shop and holistic practice and Grave’s Stores, Briston. Price £4.50.

ENJOY ROWING ON THE NORFOLK BROADS WITHBLAKENEY ROWING CLUB

Blakeney Rowing Club has transferred its activities to the Norfolk Broads for the winter. This is a great place to row one of the club’s beautiful skiffs. A typical outing, for a crew of four rowers and a cox, consists of a bracing journey across Barton Broad and down the River Ant. There are also quiet channels to explore at this time of year. There is always a stop, in a well-chosen beauty spot, for rest and refreshment. Chocolate biscuits, cake and coffee are popular when an energy boost is needed. The conversation ranges far and wide; a good time is always had by all. You could be an important part of all this. There will be instruction from safety-conscious, experienced rowers anxious to ensure well-being. Life-jackets can be provided. No previous experience is needed. There are many competitive events, races and regattas, timetabled during the season. These are great fun, but there is no necessity to take part. It is enough to enjoy the activity of rowing. However, should you wish to race against other clubs around the country, there is always an opportunity to be coached in the skills of racing. If you are interested in social rowing, racing, or simply finding a new way of staying fit and healthy,

contact Steve on 01263 741388 to arrange a trial outing. Please look through the information, comments and photographs on crablakeney.wordpress.com. A quick look through all this will give you a much clearer idea of the benefits of contacting Blakeney Rowing Club.I do hope you will come and try the sport of skiff rowing.Barry Howes

NEWS FROM BROADLAND CHESS CLUBChess! A game for two players, it has been described as a civilised game of war or a constant battle of good against evil. Non-chess players may say that the most powerful piece on the board is the King as the aim of the game is to defeat the opposing army and capture the King. However we all know that behind every good man is a strong woman, the Queen is the strongest player on the board, she can control all nearby squares, she can move as far as she wants and in whichever direction she wants, she is not just protecting the King, she is guiding his army, a formidable being on the board! The pawn in contrast is the weakest piece on the board, this is the foot soldier, the man servant, whose sole purpose is to protect the lives of the royal family. Their moves are limited, they can only advance forward, marching onward, one step at time, and when they have the enemy within their sight they can pounce diagonally. However they also have the power to destroy, a small company of foot soldiers, working together can have the power to capture and destroy the opposing King! Many kings have met their end by hand of the plebs! The new Broadland Friendly League also commenced this season and the Broadland Mallards are currently leading but with very few points separating the teams it is too close to call. The in-house tournaments are also well on their way now, Roy Hughes and Ken McEwan, as expected, have both taken an early lead, while Tony Arnold is currently leading the Challengers section. In the Junior section, Benedict Ward is leading Section A, and Joshua Ward Section B. Jonathan Reeve has reached the final of the knockout cup and is awaiting confirmation of his opponent. As always Broadland Chess Club looks forward to welcoming visitors and new members of any strength. We meet on Monday and Wednesday 7.30pm at the Kings Head in Coltishall. For further information find us on Facebook and Twitter, or our webpage.Sandra Hughes

FUNNY/STRANGE FACTS! (Believe it or not!)Orcas (killer whales) kill sharks by torpedoing up into the shark’s stomach from underneath, causing the shark to explode.Ketchup was sold in the 1830s as medicine.During the chariot scene in ‘Ben Hur’ a small red car can be seen in the distance.Upper and lower case letters are named ‘upper’ and ‘lower’ because in the time when all original print had to be set in individual letters, the ‘upper case’ letters were stored in the case on top of the case that stored the smaller, ‘lower case’ letters.Leonardo da Vinci could write with one hand and draw with the other at the same time.Because metal was scarce, the Oscars given out during World War II were made of wood.

GRESHAM’S COACH TAKES THE STAGE AT ECB CONFERENCEChris Brown, Gresham’s Cricket Coach and Norfolk Emerging Players Programme lead has taken to the stage at the England and Wales Cricket Board Coaches Association (ECB CA) National Conference.Chris joined an impressive line-up of speakers including England cricketing greats, Jonathan Trott, Graham Thorpe and Ian Salisbury. As a spin consultant on the ECB’s Elite Spin Bowling Programme, Chris delivered ‘Spinning it up’, a presentation that included practical exercises, to a packed conference hall.Three hundred delegates attended the event, billed as the flagship coaching event of the year. ‘Change the Game’ took place at St George’s Park (the home of the Football Association’s national football centre) in Burton on Trent. The conference enabled coaches to broaden their knowledge by listening to and interacting with some of the top coaches and practitioners in the country exploring relevant and contemporary issues.A former first-class cricketer, Chris Brown has captained Norfolk since 2013, as well as being the team’s coach and Norfolk Cricket Board’s performance manager. Steve Adams, Gresham’s Sports Development Director said: “This is a tremendous accolade for Chris and the School to be invited to present at the ECB National Conference, it clearly shows how highly thought of he is with the ECB! With Chris being appointed Director of Cricket we are so fortunate he is directing all our talented cricketers, both boys and girls, throughout the school in terms of their playing development. He is also integral to the link between the players and Norfolk CB as well as first class counties including Essex, Northants and Nottinghamshire CCC. In his role with school he will benefit our current and future players enormously with his extensive skills and specialist knowledge which is certainly unique in this region.”

THAT’S CHRISTMAS LIFE!More true life experiences

I was chatting to my friend about whether she should tell her son Robert the real story behind Santa. The problem was solved a few days later.“Mum, I know the truth about Santa,” said Robert. “My friends at school told me. It’s you, isn’t it?”“Yes, it’s true,” said Jane with a sigh.“But Mum, what I don’t understand is, how you get round the whole world,” he replied. My husband and I, plus our two children, had been invited to our neighbours’ for Christmas. They were totally disorganised and told us it had been too late to buy a turkey. But not to worry - they had plenty of tinned meat from Finland to serve up. Sadly, just as they were putting out the plates, they told us it was reindeer meat. Our kids’ faces were a picture - they didn’t eat a single morsel! It was Christmas Eve when my son came home with a purse he and his friends had found in the park. He said we needed to return it to the owner. This had happened to my son before, and I admired his honesty. The address was inside, so we both called over. The lady thanked us, but when she checked the purse, she said she thought there had been two £20 notes in it, now there were eight £5s.I looked at my son, and he replied, “Remember, Dad, the last lady didn’t have change for a reward.”My wife was on the phone to Virgin, our internet provider, last Christmas. Having had our problem solved by the helpful assistant, she took a note of who she was speaking to and a couple of other details. After hanging up, she looked down at her notes. They read: ‘Virgin Mary December 24.’I get the same present from my godmother every Christmas, a box of hankies. It always goes straight into the charity shop in the New Year, but last Christmas my godmother was staying with us over the holidays and I had to open the present in front of her. I tried to look pleased, but she was watching me.“Aren’t you going to open the box?” she asked.I did, and to my horror I saw a £20 note placed in there.I really don’t like to think about all the cash I’ve given away to charity over the years and how rude I must have appeared by not thanking her more profusely for the gift!

RESIDENTS URGED TO INCREASE SECURITY FOR

HEATING OIL TANKSNorfolk Police are urging residents to be vigilant as reports of heating oil thefts often increase during the winter months. The warning comes after 100 incidents in 2016 where heating oil was a factor. There have been more than 110 in 2017 so far. General tips to protect your fuel include: • Check oil levels frequently so you are aware if anyone has tampered with your supply and consider an electronic oil level gauge which sets off an audible alarm in your house if the oil level drops below a quarter full. • Fit a good quality locking device to all fuel tanks. • Consider perimeter security for the whole tank, such as a metal cage or fencing. Even a prickly hedge may help deter thieves. Remember, however, that the oil tanker driver will need to access it. • Control switches should be located in a secure building and turned off when the tank is not in use. • If you’re installing an oil tank or considering repositioning it, they should ideally be situated within sight of nearby occupied buildings. • Consider appropriate lighting around the tank so you can see and anyone can be seen. Be considerate to your neighbours and don’t use high powered lights which affect their property. If you have been a victim of oil theft, or have any information regarding heating oil thefts in general, contact Norfolk Police on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

FAIR WEATHER FOR HOLT BOWLS CLUBWith the bowls green wrapped up for the winter and the temperature far too low for outdoor bowling, members of Holt Bowls Club found the answer - a trip to Cyprus! Breakfast on the terrace by the outdoor swimming pool and bowling under clear blue skies were the order of the day on their holiday in Paphos. The excellent facilities at their hotel included the most delicious food. Organiser, Maureen Dennis, had a number of matches lined up against local clubs. The Club was victorious on two occasions - beating ‘Coral Bay’ (for the first time ever) and the ‘Aliathon’. Socialising with the opposition after the games meant that the group got to know what life was like for some of the ex-pats living on the island, not always as rosy as it might appear.Holiday over, back in Norfolk it was time for two important dates in the Club’s calendar. The annual presentation dinner took place at the Community Centre, with an excellent meal followed by the presentation of the various trophies gained during last season, most gained by the winners of the various classes at the ‘Finals Day’ in September. There were also three trophies won by the club: the Cawston Floodlit subsidiary trophy and runners up trophies for ‘Top Team’ and the ‘Webb Trophy’ competitions. ‘Member of the Year’ was awarded to Philip Dent for his outstanding support work to the Club. The next day saw the Annual General meeting. Bob McQuade retired from the Chairmanship after his three years in the post (to now become Secretary). He is succeeded by Gillian Pilgrim to steer the Club

through the next year, it’s 30th Anniversary. Thanks were given to the many Members who continue to perform such sterling work to keep the Club’s activities and facilities in such excellent shape. The meeting decided that the Club should revise the leagues entered in the coming season to better match the availability and aspiration of the players.
