NATIVE AMERICAN CONSULTATION AND REPATRIATION

Have you ever thought that “specimens,” “objects,” and “art” in museums have ongoing importance to the people and communities from which they came? There are almost 600 federally recognized American Indian tribes and Native Hawaiian organizations in the United States today. Many of them regularly consult with museums about how to store, interpret, and, in some cases, return material to their communities. Repatriation in the U.S. is a process, mandated by federal law, through which certain human remains and cultural objects are returned to affiliated tribes. How— and why—might this happen? Visit the Repatriation Program to learn about this process, to think about the decisions you might make if you worked in a museum, and to understand how the continued dialogue between indigenous people and museums make contemporary museums such dynamic spaces.

NEW ACQUISITIONS TO THE ANTHROPOLOGY COLLECTIONS Preparing new acquisitions for use in a museum collection is a complex and lengthy process. In the case of The Field Museum’s anthropological collections, it is also a rare opportunity to work with so many types of objects from all over the world. Come see some of the newest objects to arrive at the Museum, hear about the various ways they were acquired, and learn how staff members work to ensure the artifacts’ long-term preservation as well as their accessibility for research, education, and exhibition.

MALVINA HOFFMAN SCULPTURES The Malvina Hoffman sculpture in The Field Museum is a phenomenal collection artistically and historically. Hoffman was commissioned by the Field Museum for a permanent exhibition Hall of the Races of Mankind, which was a Museum feature during the Century of Progress World’s Fair in 1933-34. Many of her sculptures can still be seen on the mezzanine level of the Field Museum. After 80 years on open display, the figures are being cleaned and treated to restore lost patina. Come have a close look at some of her figures and production processes and the evolving concepts of race.

MOLA LISAS OF THE KUNA Encounter the culture and history of one of Panama’s best known indigenous groups: the Kuna people of the San Blas Islands. Learn about their world renowned textile appliqué work, the mola, and try your hand at identifying the imagery represented in examples from The Field Museum’s own collection. Discover what role the mola art form plays in Kuna society, both historically as well as in the context of modern day political and environmental issues that are threatening the Kuna people’s traditional way of life.

ANCIENT MIDWEST The Field Museum researches and cares for some rather stunning archaeological collections from around the globe. This includes artifacts uncovered from important archaeological sites in the Midwest. From two thousand year old obsidian blades excavated in Ohio for the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition to ancient pottery found in Cook County by Field Museum archaeologists, discover how collections closer to home continue to fascinate and inform us today about ancient peoples from the past. (Room 3805)

PROTECT, NOURISH,ENJOY: CO-CURATION OF COLLECTIONS WITH CHICAGO COMMUNITIESOur museum cares for cultural collections from places around the world that are today well represented in Chicago by large and active communities. One such remarkable heritage collection comes from the Philippines. We are now co-curating this outstanding collection with local Filipino-Americans. By doing so, we want to help change museum practice and world heritage management.

ARCHAEOLOGICAL CHEMISTRY LAB: TECHNIQUES OF THE FUTURE TO INVESTIGATE TODAY

The Elemental Analysis Facility hosts a portable x-ray fluorescence spectrometer, a mass spectrometer, and two lasers to determine the chemical composition of ancient artifacts. Studies undertaken in this lab aim at addressing questions regarding the technological skills of the ancient craftsmen, the localization of the production sites, the sources of raw materials, and the circulation of finished objects, thus providing a better understanding of ancient civilizations.

THE MAKING OF A COLLECTION: REPRESENTING THE HERITAGE OF EARLY 21ST CENTURY CHICAGO

What objects represent your cultural and natural heritage? See and learn about selections from the growing contemporary Chicago Region collection and offer your suggestions of objects that speak to your concerns of wellness, ecological stewardship, community, or work.

THE PAST BENEATH OUR FEET Explore the foundations of The Field Museum and Grant Park’s museum campus, as well as our ties to Chicago history, industry, and community through objects left behind by our forebears. Examine archaeological materials from the early 20th century extracted from the very ground on which we now stand, and consider their ties to our own history as an institution and a city. Learn why objects that comprised the daily lives of our forebears were intentionally deposited on this site and how we can interpret these artifacts today to glean unique insight into our own past.

IT IS MADE FROM WHAT?Cultural objects are made from all types of materials to be useful, beautiful, and often inspirational. Come to Room 3805 see if you can guess what was used to create many of the collection objects in the Opening the Vaults: Wonders of the 1893 World’s Fair and Bunky Echo Hawk exhibits currently on the Main Level. (Room 3805)

WHAT’S IN A PAINT?We’ll grind some natural earth minerals to make pigment. Then mix it with binders used by peoples over the centuries—some you can find in your own kitchen. And yes, there will be brushes and paper so you can try different paint textures, densities, and pigment/binder ratios!(Room 3805)

Learn about these important fossil sites from around the world and their significance for paleontological research. We will display fossil jellyfish from Wisconsin, starfish from Germany, trilobites from Utah, and insects in amber from the Dominican Republic. Plus learn about Illinois’ own lagerstätten fossils from the Mazon Creek region including the state fossil, the Tully Monster. (Room 3112)

IMPACTS!For the first time the Robert A. Pritzker Center for Meteoritics and Polar Studies will show its collection of impaktites. An impaktite is a terrestrial rock that was dramatically transformed by the high-pressure shock-wave from the impact of an asteroid. The pressure

experienced by these rocks on Earth’s surface is more than 20,000 times the normal atmospheric pressure! Learn about the consequences of asteroid impacts on Earth. We will also display meteorites that experienced violent impacts on their parent planets. Come see these natural archives of cosmic collisions at the Robert A. Pritzker Center!

THE INSECTSInsects eclipse all other forms of life on this planet. The interactions of insects form the biological foundation of all ecosystems: we cannot survive without them. Come see beetles, ants, butterflies and other amazing insects from our collection.

IMAGING INSECTSMany collections benefit from digital imaging. Images can be used by researchers all over the world without risking damage to the physical specimen. Come watch a demonstration of current photographic techniques using beetles, millipedes, and ants.

INSECT ZOOHold a giant tarantula! See live Madagascar hissing cockroaches and local insects. And much more!

BIRD PREP LABCome visit the Bird Prep Lab. There will be various activities representing field research, study skin preparation, and birds for touching. From 5pm-7pm, come see our artist-in-residence, Peggy MacNamara. Be sure not to miss those live dermestid beetles!
