Rotary Scholarships
Carol Schreiber
Carol Shreiber, Chair of the Scholarship committee, welcomed our award-winning students today, and their parents. Scholarships are awarded from the club’s Ro-tary Foundation, and this is our 35th year doing so. Since Rotary’s motto is “Service Above Self,” and our aim com-munity service, applicants have demonstrated a similar ethic or wish to pursue a related vocational service. Carol thanked her committee: Michelle Nash, Felix Wang, Robert Cabral, and Tim Weaver. The students were introduced by members of the com-mittee; each said a few words, and were given a plaque. Those honored were Darya Abbassi and Desireh Abbas-si, Moorpark College; Lauren Doyle, Thousand Oaks High School; Jeanette Simanek, La Reina High School (in ab-sentia); Erin Strang, La Reina High School; and Hannah Neihoff, La Reina High School Interact Club.

Shakespeare Festival Preview
Karen Furnari
Karen Furnari introduced Michael Arndt and Kevin
Kurt from the Kingsman Shakespeare Festival at CLU,
which is celebrating their 21st year at CLU. Michael
and Kevin were very grateful for our sponsorship.
They hosted a trivia contest having to do with Shake-
speare, giving out prizes for correct or incorrect answers. Participants were
Felix Wang, Bob Lewis, Jeff Borenstein, and Martin Anderson.
Michael then went on to introduce us to Love’s Labour’s Lost. There will be
music, sets of clowns, plenty of stage comment, and a starter poem. This story
is a prequel to Much Ado About Nothing, and is lots of fun. Rotarians will
joining in the fun on July 8th at the Production of Love’s Labor Lost..

Minutes of Meeting
June 15, 2017
Susan Murata opened the meeting with the Inspirational Moment and a salute to the Flag. She congratulated those of us who were born in the 1930’s thru the 1970’s for surviving, then reminded us of the “simple” and even “dangerous” ways we did things “then” and the differences between then and now.
Tony Kourounis took over and conducted the meeting, as Robert Bianchi is out of town. He led us in singing God Bless America.
Dave Burns introduced our guests today. The visiting Rotarian was Jill Haney from Simi Sunset. Our guests were Matt Lallo’s wife Teresa; Mary Stec, guest of Carol Robinson; Red Stanley, guest of Steven Stanley; and Daniel Home, guest of Natalie Yanez.
Thousand Oaks Rotary
Minutes of Meeting
June 22, 2017
For the Inspirational Moment Patricia Jones shared the story of an
old man with sons who were always in discord. The old man pre-
sented a bundle of sticks to his 1st son and asked him to break the
bundle of sticks. He tried and tried, but was unsuccessful. He then
presented them to his 2nd son who asked him to break the bundle of
sticks, who was also unsuccessful, as was his third son. His 4th son
took the bundle and broke the bundle one stick at a time. The 4
brothers never fought again, since from this lesson they learned
that is easy to break sticks one at a time, but that unity is strength.
As Rotarians, we are stronger if we work together.
Ed Jones introduced visiting honorary member Skip Roberts and
Rotarian Nike Richardson from the Camarillo club.
President Bianchi announced the passing of John Newhouse, Dis-
trict Governor Assistant. Celebration of John’s life will be held on
Friday, June 30 at Westminster Westlake Village, at 1:00. Recep-
tion will be held at the family home 6128 Braemar Circle, Agoura
Hills. He also mentioned that there was a joint Board meeting on
Tuesday evening, and how proud he is of his board. He then pre-
sented Ronnie Stone with his blue badge

President Robert Bianchi
President Robert expressed pride in our club, as we have funded $54,175
in local community projects. $11,500 in Matching Paul Harris Fellow funds,

Robert then recognized his Board for a job well done, handing out recogni-
tion awards to the following members:

cooperation and making his life easier
Karen Furnari, much appreciated for her role as Chair of Family of Rotary, whose highlight has been bringing
the sponsorship of Kingsman Shakespeare Festival back.
Tim Weaver, incoming President who is most appreciated for his expertise in conflict management. His most
inspiring moment was listening to Bill Gates and Jack Nicklaus at the International Convention, and the impact
they made, especially considering that Jack Nicklaus had Polio at the age of 13. He was also extremely moved
by the story of a Polio survivor who without the use of her legs, completed 2.5 miles of swimming, 115 bike
miles, and a wheelchair marathon. She was extremely inspirational.
Carol Freeman, who was recognized for always being there as wise counsel to President Bianchi, who always
