Editorial I must admit to feeling a little hypocritical in my role as editor as I’m sure many of you are aware of my contempt for the press. Their recent rejection of the proposed controls seems to me to be just like burglars rejecting the laws against burglary. With that in mind I would ask you all to let me know how you feel about this publication as, with less than 500 readers you are in a position more directly to control what is published. I hope that we keep you up to date with what’s going on in the club and especially the events and functions which are coming up over the next couple of months. May I suggest that, in order not to miss things, you enter those events you’d like to be involved with in your diaries as soon as they’re published—that way you’ll be less likely to double book yourselves. We’ve all done it, I myself have two bookings for the 30th May, our Autotest and an ASEMC meeting; as chairman I am bound to be at the Association meeting so Andy |Elcomb has kindly agreed to cover for me at the Autotest. The North Weald Sprint wasn’t as well attended as in previous years but still went well despite being a very cold day. I wonder if the financial state of the country if finally biting into our sport and there is further evidence of that in the lack of entries in some race championships. We were well supported with marshals, though, which always helps the day run smoothly. Our involvement with the new London Rally for Heroes worked well with Andy Kilby in charge of the Service Area and Andy Elcomb overseeing the whole site including the stages in Rushmoor Arena. The Service Area ran very well despite people feeling the need to abandon their cars where they wanted rather than where we wanted. The stage needed a few more marshals but generally ran well. Let’s hope this event has a viable future as we need it in this area. Having attended my first Hillclimb and Sprint Sub Committee my thoughts have spread deeper into this aspect of our sport. I have been wondering where our sport will be in ten years time; cars are getting more complicated as John Symes described last month regarding their lighting and the regulations covering what you can and can’t do to them for use on the highway are becoming more restrictive year by year. One of the joys of UK motorsport is the level of tinkering that goes on at all levels with the end result being, in my opinion, the Adrian Neweys and Gordon Murrays who have the brains to build winning F1 cars. If we stifle that inventiveness we’ll lose out in the future but there needs to be a good place at club level (Clubman and National B) for those with a limited pocket to enjoy competing in fairly cheap basic cars without them being swamped by those with deeper pockets. The tyre (1A / 1B) issue is part of this debate and often the argument goes that this or that car comes equipped with 1B tyres so they should be allowed at the ‘lowest’ level of our sport. My view is that that car will be, by its very nature, a performance car and not what the series production class is all about. I think that series production should be for the everyday shopping car with a few mods (we all like to play) but nothing outrageously expensive. Modern cars perform well and are very safe in their standard form so lets use them as a basis for cheap competition at this level for the ordinary club member. I hope that, by that philosophy, we can keep the costs of what you need to go sprinting to an acceptable level. Your thoughts please. Our AGM came and went with no major upsets or rebellions, thank you to those who attended and thank you to my fellow committee members who were ‘self-mugged’ into continuing for another year. All very nice but we could do with some fresh blood from our younger members, although we are better off from that aspect than many clubs—but we must keep moving ahead, experience is all very useful but staleness isn’t. That’s about it for this month. Please keep supplying articles etc. for the next issues—as implied in my opening remarks journalism isn’t my favourite profession but we’re lucky enough to have members who are journalists but don’t fall into that category (and this is a test to see if they read this rubbish!) Chin
Welcome to May’s Chairman’s Chat. At last we have recently seen something of the sun and things are brightening up all round. Unfortunately the sun came too late for Maidstone’s Trial at Stoneacre so that has been an almost complete washout trialling-wise in the south to date as many other events were lost also. However if you are still keen to get your trialling fix before the evenings draw in then come along to our Trial at Chapman’s Hill, Meopham on 16th June. This is a very smooth venue so will also suit newcomers with standard cars – we may even have a class for cars with low front spoilers! North Weald seems to be fun again with happy competitors at our minimalist sprint on 31st March and Green Belt’s slightly more coned one on 21st April. Very pleased to have a goodly number of marshals out at our event too – thanks guys & girls! There were also quite a few 7Oaks people to be seen out and about on the London Rally for Heroes on the 20th April in Rushmoor Arena and the neighbouring service area. This was very much a joint effort with Maidstone though and they brought easily as many people, if not more, including taking on the responsibility of Stage Commander and Safety Officer. It was a good thing they did because it turns out that it takes a lot of manpower to make these things happen – just like Crystal Palace – and we had to do a bit of people-juggling to ensure everything was adequately covered. There were quite a lot of clashing events that day though, so it was always going to be a bit of a struggle, but those that went saw a lot of the stage and service area and were busy for most of the day. Only one 7Oaks member took part though, Andy Pecover co-driving car 78 the 1275 Mini. There’s a cracking bit of video on YouTube of them getting out of shape in Rushmoor – take a look at the 7oaks forum Fast Talk, click on Chit Chat and look for the London Rally for Heroes topic. http://www.sevenoaksmotorclub.com/cgi-bin/ikonboard/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=1;t=4028 The AGM on 17th April passed without drama and was attended by a fair number of you and so we will continue with the same people on the committee and doing much the same things. We had quite a good chat afterwards about various things and of course all comments were taken on board. We only got a handful of apologies for absence and nobody asked for anything in particular to be brought up so we can only assume that the rest of you are content for the committee to continue as they see fit. 2nd May sees the start of the Evening Autotests at Brands Hatch – let’s hope that the current nice weather (23rd April) persists right through until the final event on Sunday 4th August. 12th May sees us strapping the hundreds of tyre tubes for Crystal Palace – it’s a fun few hours doing that if there’s enough people, but you won’t get an event on 26-27th May if there isn’t… watch for an email request for help soon, or better than that – get in touch to volunteer first please! Your help will count toward qualifying for the Speed League and other 7Oaks championships, as did the London rally last weekend. Enjoy your motorsport!

"Knock, knock." "Who's there?" "The Boston Strangler." "Oh, it's my wife you want then."
HAIR'S CHAT- IN (taken from the July 1970 Acorn) Episode seventy-seven; actually the nineteenth month of idiotic meanderings and we are running out of printable jokes. We missed the television programme featuring - if you will forgive the expression - Raquel Welch: we were at a 7oaks committee meeting, there's devotion to duty for you! Did you know that indecent exposure is politely expressed in Court as the wilful drawing of attention to the Almighty's handiwork? Several well known club members took part in an invited event on Saturday, June 6th. John Kempton was the Entrant, with Dick Whittington as Clerk of the Course, Terry Allen was Chief Marshal and the Micks Collins and Pitty, with David Stares were Observers. The Brothers Moss supplied the clobber and John took the premier award in the form of Valerie Cooper delightfully turned out in white for the occasion. A short road section led to the second part of the event where the organisers had laid on copious refuelling arrangements with a large stock of alcohol based mixtures, the consumption of which was encouraged (as if any of the participants would need encouragement!) by the beautiful sunshine in which the event was held. After the proceedings John and Valerie left for parts foreign by heavier than air machine. A zebra is the biggest size a woman can buy. We had a rather nice day out at the TEAC Crystal Palace Race Meeting. The weather was glorious, the dollies were in full bloom and we had a slight misfire at high revs, even after a couple of plug changes. The paddock has a loose surface and all day long a fine black dust covered everything, as quick as we brushed it off, it was back again; fortunately we were able to eat lunch upwind on the grass under the trees. After being commended by the scrutineer on the turn out of the car we set off for practice, to see just what all this railway sleeper business is. We soon found out! From the start after a short straight the track swings left then doubles back hard right, sleepers outside and lawns with rhododendrons in full bloom inside, trees over which puts it all in the shade; this is the North Tower Crescent - Glade - Park Curve part, all downhill, narrow and swervy. Bursting out into the sunlight we head down the new link along the back of the Recreation Centre, flat out right hand kink and on to Ramp Bend - forget about the sleepers, this is lined with a concrete wall, right on the edge of the circuit and twelve feet high'. On up Anerley ramp where the brave shave the wall, lurch across and up Maxim Rise and brake hard for South Tower and across the line. It is rough, a bit frightening and very exciting; we lapped at around 80 - the F2s were lapping at 100 and that extra 20 m.p.h. is one hell of a difference. The race was won, as is now customary, by Brian Martin in his own Martin BMW followed by Jim Morley in the now topless Saturn and Barrie Smith with the 5-litre Lola T70 which filled the track. Martin Raymond shattered the up to 1150 GT lap record by over 3 seconds and we finished a misfiring third in class - but it was a great experience. Next event, the Valence Fair. Two coloured ladies were discussing their marital troubles in the kitchen. "I don't know what to make of my husband these days," said one, closing the fridge door. "Don't worry," said the other, "I'll lend you my Jimmy Young Cook Book." Having given up motor racing, Mick Collins has taken to the water with a little boat with a — - very large engine on the back. So far he has torn half the bottom out, which Dickie fibreglassed back, and now he wants an engine twice as powerful. To us it looks as if anything bigger would sink the boat! Another racer considering taking to the water is Mick Pitty, although he favours sails. He is often down at Chichester Harbour at week-ends, but we are assured that the Lotus will be out for the Hill Climb. We hear that a new craze is 'sweeping' America - full size slot racing. The cars are powered by 350 c.c. engines, can do 125 m.p.h. and have brakes. They are fixed in slots, six abreast, and the skill is in the use of the power; collisions are impossible, but spins are not, and it is supposed to be ideal for amateur club racing as it is so safe. The mind boggles! We survived Crystal Palace without any danger but the next day while playing cricket we had a collision which resulted in broken glasses, a bleeding face and a black eye - now there's a dangerous game for you. There was a spinster who kept a lady parrot and a gentleman parrot which were her pride and joy. One day the lady parrot caught a cold and died and, sadly, soon afterwards, the gentleman parrot died of a broken heart. The spinster was very distressed so she took the two birds to a taxidermist to have them stuffed to preserve them in the house as a memento. The taxidermist promised to let the spinster know when they would be ready, suggesting about a week. A month went by with no news, so the spinster went to see the taxidermist who apologised and said, "I forgot to ask you, but do you want them mounted?" "It's a nice thought," she replied, "but the Vicar would not approve, so we had better just have them holding hands." Goodnight Psyche.

I sure you already know, SDMC are running a sprint event at Crystal Place on May 26
th & 27
th. In the show area SDMC has a club stand which this year I am organising.
I would be delighted if you were able to offer your competition car for the club stand. My mission statement for 2013 is to “show people what they can do”. I hope to use the club stand to offer some context to what type of events people can do and what it can be done in; from scatter rallying to sprinting and Autotesting to Stage Rallying. So this is my invitation for you to display your competition car on the SDMC stand Sunday, Monday or maybe even both days. All I need from you is; A minimum of 3 pictures of your car in competition, but 6+ would give me some choice and the more varied the better, send by Email, I’ll print them A4 & put them in a large clip frame. A brief write up about the car & it’s preparation/modification, what event’s it competes on and maybe some results, or the exploits of the driver, whichever of these you feel happiest putting together for the club. Such that it can be presented on an A4 sheet. A minimum of a two of hours to come on the SDMC club stand to chat to people about your car or motorsport in general, (I will be on the stand all day both days). If there is any concern about dereliction of duty, please let me know where you are posted & I’ll make sure there is ample cover so you can escape from your main duties. This does read like a list of demands, which I suppose it is, but the aim is to present our stand as to help the general public understand how affordable and accessible motor sport is and that you don’t have to be Jenson Button or Sebastian Loeb to drive a “racing car”. I’m hoping I’m inundated with replies, if not you might find me on the other end of the phone badgering you J Hope to hear from you soon. Russell Giddings [email protected]

MOTORSPORT GLOSSARY: Jargon, abbreviations etc. explained If you don’t understand the explanations—please ask!) As promised last month I’ll go a bit deeper into road based events. 188 and similar three digit numbers (one or two in some parts of Scotland) These are the numbers of the OS Landranger series of maps which are what we use for rallying. MR—Map Reference used to plot a location on an OS map. OS—Ordnance Survey—official cartographers. TC—Time Control, where your time of arrival will be recorded on your timecard PC—Passage Check—a control at which your presence is recorded and your direction of approach, but not timed. RC—Route Check—an unmanned check to prove that you’re following the correct route. CB—Code Board—a board at a route check containing one or more digits which must be recorded as proof of passage. Timecard—A printed card on which your times at controls are recorded and on which you record Route Checks and Passage Checks—this card records your performance on the rally and is one of the most important documents you have. OTL—Outside Time Limit—too late at a time control, i.e. outside the maximum lateness allowed for a control LWRNAM —Long Way Round Not As Map triangle refers to the little grass triangles that often appear at junctions and telling you to go the longest way round it. (I said road rallying is a black art!) Targa Timing—The blackest of all arts and banned since 1988! Tulip, Herringbone, Gridlines etc. etc.—some of the many and various navigation encryptions used to slow us down. Now for the terms used in describing the route ahead: Calling—describing the route ahead from the map. On your own—means the navigator is busy and won’t be calling. 90 (60, 45, 30 etc) Right (or Left)—The angle and direction of the approaching bend. Slot—Side road off the road you’re on, usually used as a verb to mean take that side road. Wrong Slot—Failing to follow the correct route. Tenth (two tenths etc.) - Distance in tenths of an agreed unit of measure (Mile, Kilometre or anything so long as you both know what!) to the next feature. Off—where the driver has failed to understand one or more of the above! Big Off! - More so! Often requiring the use of your mobile phone. Chin
Speed Speak Please find in this edition of Acorn the championship tables up to round 3; at the moment of going to press I don’t have the results from the two late April events. There is still a long way to go but it already looks like quite a lot of people have been out having fun, which makes it worth the effort on my part. On a personal level, I have been really enjoying the close competition in class A1, in my recently purchased Eunos Roadster! I’ve still got plenty to learn about driving it fast, but I am getting quicker, so watch out! There was about half a second covering the top four at Round 4 North Weald; unfortunately I was the guy who finished fourth, maybe next time.

Dear all, I run a small events company specializing in accommodation packages at Le Mans for the 24hrs race in June. We have a wonderful Chateau approximately 30mins drive from the circuit. A variety of accommodation is available, including staying in the Chateau itself, a large Gite capable of sleeping 16, Chalets sleeping up to 6, or camping in the grounds. Breakfast and good facilities are available for all, and we have over 30 years of experience at Le Mans so can offer fantastic advice about watching the action and so on. If you and some friends are interested in Le Mans, please check out our website – http://www.en-tente-cordiale.co.uk and feel free to get in touch at [email protected]. Jon

LOTTO HASPENGOWRALLY 29-31st May 1987
Car 110 - GRAHAM CHILD / KEVIN ABLITT - Group N. Golf GTi.
They say that ignorance is bliss and this may well be true, but attempting your first international rally without so much as seeing (let alone reading!) the regs. would appear pretty stupid. However, it was under such circumstances that we set sail from Ramsgate heading for Belgium for the Haspengouw Rally taking GILL and TARNA along as service crew and general caterers.
The Rally was based in Landen, situated between Brussels and Liege and took over a large part of the town using the local college as Rally HQ and the sports hall as a spectators paradise containing dozens of TV sets for showing results and old rally films. Almost every shop had either rally posters or even model rally cars - the bakers had a special stage with breadcrumbs as gravel! Giant-sized cut-out rally cars adorned the countryside and the whole place exuded a friendly atmosphere.
Our entry had been arranged for us by Deals for Wheels who had also organised accommodation which turned out to be a sort of school in which the four of us had a tiny room containing two sets of bunk beds - we rapidly learnt to become good friends - the breakfasts were good though! After arriving on the Wednesday night we had collected our road books and regulations (at last!) and some rapid reading was necessary in order that we could begin practising the next day without falling foul of some regulation.
"Practising" meant making pace notes which neither Graham nor I had ever done before but which was essential in order that we could be competitive rather than just relying on the road book. As it turned out it was easier to make notes than we expected as there were a lot of straights (!), but it was very time consuming and any intentions we may have had of practising the night stages in the dark went out of the window as we were too tired. I did go out later in the evening with Gill and Tarna to recce the service crews' route to make sure that they got to the service points at the right time during the rally,
Friday morning was a leisurely affair - we were not due at scrutineering until Icite morning and not due to start the event until after 6 o'clock. Scrutineering was a bit different to a British club event - no-one tugged at the wheels or tried the brakes, instead they were most concerned that we had no carpet in the boot and hence did not comply with the homologation papers. However, we passed
scrutineering, signed on and put the car into parc ferme and waited.
Eventually the time came to check out of parc ferme and drive up onto the starting ramp - quite what the announcer said while we waited I don't know as 1 don't speak Flemish, but he did wish us "good luck" in English and then we drove off.
Prior to the start I was concerned as to how the timing system would work as there was no distinction between road timing and stage times, i.e. you were timed from the start of one stage to the control just prior t ; the next stage. In practice the system works very well and we had no timing problems once we had synchronized our watch with the organiser's time pieces.
From the start of the first stage it was all go - the stages were fast and furious, mostly a mixture of concrete, tarmac and gravel with some cobbles thrown in for good measure - the best bits were the "round the houses" sections which were crowded with spectators . Our times were hardly spectacular, but at least we had no problems during the first loop of stages and returned to the main service area for a quick wash and brush-up.
Our second leg started in failing light and by a massive effort we knocked a whole second (!) off our time for the first stage despite having to avoid a stricken Lauda? but subsequently times were noticeably slower - not enough road rally practice! we were caught on the next stage after stopping to investigate a knocking noise which turned out to be a puncture although we did not find it until the end of the stage„ No further problems arose that night, apart from being delayed at one service point by a couple of autograph-hunting kids - fame at last!
Our Friday night performance determined Saturday's start number arid there was no rush to get up early - in fact we re-started right behind car 111, A slowish time on the first stage of the morning was followed by a much quicker time on the next - even after waiting at the start for ages because of an accident involving another Deals on Wheels car,, At service after this stage Graham decided to pump up the tyres to try and prevent puncture as the next stage contained a high percentage of loose gravel, on reflection this was a mistake 0« * „ „ » As soon as we started the next stage the car felt distinctly unstable and was gliding around even on the tarmac! Just over half-way through we punctured again and had to stop to change the wheel 0 Charging off again trying to make up for lost timer we were caught out (l think that's the expression) by a slight bend coming out of a dip - the back end decided that it wanted to lead for a change and came round„ Unfortunately there happened to be a ditch beside the track,, the front wheel dropped into this and the car went over, ending up on its roof in the ditch0 I had a quick panic wondering where we could get out, but Graham managed to open his door and we scrambled out unhurt but disappointed as there was no way the car could be moved without assistance*
9o that was that = eventually we were towed out and shortly afterwards Gill and Tarna appeared on the scene - the car itself was not badly damaged just a few bent panels? but we were well out of time. Later in the afternoon we went to spectate, just to see how it should be done! The sight of the eventual winner, Robert Droogman's Sierra was really something else as it hurtled along like a red and white missile„
We treated ourselves to a decent meal as consolation and cheered up no end - OK. so we failed to finish but we had certainly learnt a lot and enjoyed most of it - this could definitely become addictive - we shall

Monthly Mug Here’s a brief synopsis of why Ross earned his mug: At SDMC North Weald Sprint on 31-03-13 in his 2007 daily driver road car; a UK Subaru Impreza WRC CCC, he not only won his class, but also finished 4th overall and not far behind FTD! Beating a collection of hardcore traliered machines in his only car that goes to Sainsburys on a Sunday, which is relatively un-fettled compared to lots of the machinery he was faster than. A genuine outstanding performance! Our congratulations & a Monthly Mug goes to Ross Martin.

As an ex-Editor of this illustrious and historical publication, I came across this, passed to me by a teacher acquaintance. I thought it would be nice to share it with you the reader, in case you were thinking of becoming an Acorn contributor. These little rules will to make Chin’s editorial life a bit easier.

Well, the season is beginning to develop, we’re now into the speed part of the year and our dark evenings in the lanes are drawing to a close. Soon the Autotesters will be stacking up the points so make sure you’re scoring in something this year—I love nice long lists. I’ve not had the signing on sheets from North Weald yet so the Chalky White and Trog tables have yet to be updated but I’ll have them by next month. By next month’s edition I may have all the data from Crystal Palace so I expect the lists to get very long indeed, I hope the marshalling and officiating lists grow then as it will mean that lots of you have got stuck in to keep the event at the top where it now is. Talking of which you’ll earn marshalling points for helping setting up, banner erection and tyre strapping which means a lot of you could get your championship qualification in early.
The first Nat B event for the Rose and Crown tables was our North Weald Sprint so the class winners on that event are at the top. It was a pity we lost our Car Trial to the weather as that would have added more variety to this list, but others are in the same boat. Rose and Crown
Events to date are as follows, I’m still waiting for the January ERMC 12-car and our Scatter.

With two invited sprints on the list we have a new name heading it—keep it up James. Not as many names on there as I’d like but early days yet, I’m sure we’ll see more of you out as the summer improves D.V. Tyrrell-Flemming Speed
Here we go again—Kevin’s still out as often as he can and with success too. Tyrrell-Flemming Non-Speed

Ben put our new camera to the test at the recent SEMSEC half day sprint …. David is still at full chat finding Tim Cole making an exit at Devils Elbow !
Robert Wadsworth had the lovely Lancia on song after a broken supercharger belt at our North Weald the week before
Chris was 11 tenths as usual to take a class win despite a broken engine mounting Alex Peters was over the moon with a class win in the big Mustang
And I got the Paddock Bend apex (for once) To notch up a personal best and class win
But the biggest smile of the day was Ben having been allowed a few practice starts in a quiet corner of the top paddock, ‘driving’ the +2 for the first time !

If you’re ever in doubt that all the money we raised at the Annual awards Night raffle wasn’t used legitimately (i.e. not used to fund Clive’s holidays!) here’s the proof
Attention to Detail Most will be aware that risk management takes up a considerable part of my working life. Whatever we do in life there is a risk. Walk down stairs and there is always the chance you might slip or trip and take a tumble, not high risk (increases with age! - ed) but it can happen. The consequences may be minor, they could be catastrophic or somewhere between. Walk across the road and misjudge the speed of an approaching car and you could be hit by the car. So it goes on. In motor sport there is undoubtedly an inherent risk and there are many who would claim that such is part of the challenge and the attraction. Risk can never be eliminated but it can be managed so as to reduce the frequency of occurrence and the consequences that may flow when the risk comes home. Currently we are involved in a research project looking at how the seating posture of a driver, the configuration of the harness, the angle of the seat base, the angle of the seat back etc. can all hugely effect the outcome should the driver have a decent impact of some sort. Risk management is not difficult, it is largely commonsense and attention to detail. We have heard the comment "I have a good harness so no worries about the seat, my harness will hold me". Not so the seat is not there simply to keep your backside off the floor, it is an item of safety equipment that works in partnership with the restraint be that a lap and diagonal or a motorsport harness. That partnership will be compromised if there is anything between the seat and the harness other than you so do not use loose cushions etc. In an impact if the seat fails or breaks loose from the structure of the car the performance of the restraint is compromised. Such can make the difference between stepping out and not stepping out. Whatever the restraint make sure it is tight. If a harness install it in accordance with MSA Regulations, same with the seat and make sure the seat is positioned to suit you. Settle into your seat, connect the lap strap and pull it tight and then pull it tight again. It needs to run over the bone structure of your pelvis and be really tight, only then plug in the shoulder straps and then pull those tight. So often we have seen people who have pulled the shoulder straps tight without first tightening the lap strap resulting in the lap strap running over the users stomach. Stomachs are soft and squish, you will not be adequately restrained. If using a five or six point harness make sure you adjust the crotch strap(s) which need to be taut, not hanging loose. Helmets, you only have one head so look after it! Take care in selecting a helmet, it needs to be a firmly cosy fit, not flopping about on your head. Remember that not all heads are the same shape so helmets from two different manufacturers can be the same size but you usually find one will fit you better than the other. Make sure you pull the chin strap tight. Occasionally we come across competitors who lose their helmet during the course of an incident. In every case investigated there has been evidence that the helmet was of too generous a size and that the chin strap was not fully tightened. Helmets like any piece of kit need to be looked after, drop it, bang it against a door frame as you go into sign on or whatever and the chances are it will be damaged. A damaged helmet will not give the same protection as an undamaged helmet! There are many other points to pay attention to but the message is clear:
Always buy the best quality safety equipment you can. Make sure it is the correct size for you. Install and use it in accordance with MSA Regulations and manufacturers
recommendations. Keep all kit in clean, sound order. Do not get casual, pay attention to detail, it makes a huge difference.
