Membership Meeting Minutes

March 9, 2020

Commander Fred Rogers called the meeting at Scottish Rite Hospital For Children to

order at 1830. The opening ceremony included advancing the colors, a prayer, reciting

the pledge of allegiance, POW/MIA remembrance and recite the Preamble to our

Constitution.

Officers Roll Call - See the attached Post Officer roll call roster. A quorum was

announced by Adjutant Parsons.

Introduction of Guests – There were no guests at tonight’s meeting.

Training – 1st Vice Commander Thor Anderson gave a presentation on Americanism

and The American Legion.

Approve Previous Meeting Minutes – Marty Martel motioned to approve the January

23, 2020 membership meeting minutes as emailed. Paul Jones seconded the motion

and the minutes were approved.

Ted Ruybal motioned to approve the February 10, 2020 Executive Members Meeting as

emailed. Terry Gilbert seconded the motion and the minutes were approved.

Rick Redden motioned to approve the March 2, 2020 Executive Committee Meeting

Minutes as emailed. Marty Martel seconded the motion and the minutes were

approved.

Post Officer Reports & Updates:

1st Vice Commander Thor Anderson -

Our assigned goal is 526 and we have 529 members for 100% of goal. This includes 18 new members and 84 transfers.

Our retention goal is 464 and we have achieved 427. We need 37 more renewals to achieve our goal.

Members are requested to recruit one new member for the 2020 membership year.

Thor introduced new members on the attached new member list. A vote to accept each as Post member was approved.

Terry Meyering presented the January 2020 Finance Report. Thor Anderson motioned

to approve the report, subject to audit. Larry Marshall seconded the motion and the

report was approved.

Terry Meyering presented the February 2020 Finance Report. Larry Marshall motioned

to approve the report subject to audit. Paul Jones seconded the motion and the report

was approved.

Program Chair Updates:

Boys State - Larry Marshall – Post 178 had 31 nominees apply for Boys State.

The Committee has decided to send 21 boys to Boys State. The selections have

been made but selected boys have not yet been notified. Committee members

are Terry Gilbert, Ed Kelly, Martel Martel, Rick Redden, Ted Ruybal and Larry

Wilhelm.

Law & Order – Stuart Sax – no updates.

Oratorical – The Department of Texas presented a certificate of recognition to

Post 178 for their contribution to host the State contest for 2019 and 2020.

School Awards – Ted Ruybal – no updates.

Scouting – Leonard Havron – no updates.

Committee Chair Updates:

No updates to report.

Unfinished Business – Thor Anderson reported that Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital

has agreed to let Post 178 hold their monthly meetings through May. In addition, The

Grove has also agreed to let the Post hold their meetings at The Grove but no details

are available at this time.

Post Officer elections will be held during the June 2020 meeting.

Anyone interested in participating with or attending Color/Honor Guard events is

welcome. Please contact Larry Wilhelm.

New Business:

Commander Rogers read the attached document concerning The American Legion and

Post 178 and political activities. The document also addresses the wearing our Legion

cap at political events. Post 178 will strictly adhere to the National policy.

In a previous Executive meeting the possibility of Post obtaining a challenge coin was

discussed. Larry Marshall motioned to approve the Post purchasing 100 challenge

coins at a cost to Post 178 of $825.05 and sell them at a price of $10.00 per coin for the

first 100 coins and all coins thereafter. Marty Martel seconded the motion and it was

approved.

Announcements - Delbert Parsons announced that following tonight's meeting we will

meet at Strikz for a Social time.

April 6, 2020 is the next Executive Committee meeting which will be held at Strikz

beginning at 1830.

April 13, 2020 is the next Post Membership meeting. The meeting is scheduled to be

held at Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital.

April 25 - 26, 2020 is the 4th District convention which will be held in Mabank, Texas.
