HEPHAESTUS is the Greek name for the Roman

god of the forge, Vulcan. Birmingham has the

world’s largest iron statue, that of the Roman god,

Vulcan. We named our Starfleet chapter the

Hephaestus to give us ties to our city and to Star

Trek, which has had its own Vulcan since 1966.

Hephaestus forged armor and weapons for the gods.

We create our own “armor and weapons” here, in

our newsletter, so it is called The Anvil.

The Anvil, Issue 263, is the monthly newsletter of

the USS Hephaestus, NCC-2004, of Starfleet, The

International Star Trek Fan Association. All terms

and phrases from Star Trek are owned by

Paramount Pictures Corporation, a division of

Paramount Communications and all rights are

reserved.

Greetings, Where has this year gone? We are in August and kids will be heading back to school. It seems like the year just goes by so fast. We have plenty of things left to do. Make sure you check out the Away mission calendar to see what we are up to. Also if you want to write an article, send a picture or give me a story to print in the anvil the deadline dates are on there too. I am always looking for a fresh look at the things that our club and Star Trek are doing out there. Also send in your achievements so we can give you the accolades you deserve. If you have an idea for something you think the crew would like to do, send them to me at my email address or on our Facebook page. As always see you around the ship, Capt. MarkAdam Miller [email protected]

August is here with its hot temperatures, somewhat hot anyway. August seems to be a nondescript month. When I googled it, I found it was originally called Sextillis, but later the name was changed to honor Augustus Caesar. If you want or need a laugh, google SAMA, the Society for Abolition of the Month of August. We have important ship’s business coming up. We will have a Vote of Confidence for our CO MarkAdam Miller during the first three weeks of September, Sept. 1-21. You may email your vote to me at [email protected]. If you think he’s doing a good job vote “yes.” If not vote “no.” I will post this announcement on the List server also. That’s all this time. See ya. . Pat Hicks [email protected]

The Captain’s cookout was this month’s social. We had many people in attendance. Lots of food was consumed as usual. We also had a lot of games played. We played Dalmuti which was won by Danny Potts. Texas Hold’em Poker was won by Michael Burtyk with Brenda Miller coming in second. Munchkin was also played which was won by Roy Green. The TV was showing Sci-Fi show all day also.

Attendance: 25 people.

Personnel Updates:

If you have any news or accomplishments you would like to share with the group please email them to me at: [email protected]. Also your personal updates can give your Captain added info to help get you recognition and an award at summit for your accomplishments.

SSttaarrfflleeeett MMaarriinnee CCoorrppss Greetings,

The 654th MSG is looking for members. There is a completely different set of Academy schools for those trying to get

the Boothby awards. There is no pressure in joining. There are two categories: Active which means all ranks will be

Marine ranks, and Reserve which mean you stay primary Fleet and only use Marine ranks when doing marine stuff.

Contact Major General Neil Yawn if you are interested or have questions.

Looking to boost your Boothby Awards? The Starfleet Marines Academy may be your answer. Check out what SFMC

Academy has for you.

Remembering Klingon Commander Kang, Michael Ansara (1922-2013)

Michael Ansara best known to Star Trek fans as Klingon Commander Kang passed away July 31 at the

age of 91. Mr. Ansara first played Kang in the Star Trek episode “Day of the Dove.” He would reprise his role

in Star Trek Deep Space Nine episode “Blood Oath” and in Star Trek Voyager episode ”Flashback”. He played

one other character for Star Trek, Lwaxana Troi's Tavnian spouse, Jeya, in the DS9 episode “The Muse.” Mr.

Ansara also is known in Sci-Fi circles as Kane in Buck Rogers. One of my favorite performances of his was his

voice over work as Dr. Victor Fries/Mr. Freeze on the Batman Animated Series. He was married to Barbara

Eden, “I Dream of Jennie” from 1958 to 1974.

A Very Klingon Khristmas

I know it is early for Christmas but something you may want to put on your list is “A Very Klingon Khristmas.”

This book, written by Paul Ruditis and illustrated by Patrick Faricy in Norman Rockwell style, employs rhyming

verse to tell the story of the birth of Kahless and other Klingon Christmas traditions that are told on Qo’noS. Be

a good Klingon child so you will receive this book instead of a Tribble in your stocking. Available Oct 29.

Zachary on The Big Bang Theory?

Zachary Quinto wants to do the Big Bang Theory but with his schedule he might not be able to work it in. The

producers of the show are hoping to work it out but nothing is set in stone yet. Mr Quinto doesn’t want to come on as

Spock but an evil twin of himself that gets into it with Sheldon. Here is hoping for him to be on The Big Bang Theory

soon.

Star Trek Search for Spocl not on Netflix

If you want to watch Star Trek: Search for Spock on Netflix you will have to wait. Netflix has pulled the film because the subtitles for the Klingon and Vulcan langue has degraded and rather than use the dubbing that DVD manufactures have done in the past they wish to restore the subtitles. Thank you, Netflix for bringing quality back to this great film.
