HEPHAESTUS is the Greek name for the Roman
god of the forge, Vulcan. Birmingham has the
world’s largest iron statue, that of the Roman god,
Vulcan. We named our Starfleet chapter the
Hephaestus to give us ties to our city and to Star
Trek, which has had its own Vulcan since 1966.
Hephaestus forged armor and weapons for the gods.
We create our own “armor and weapons” here, in
our newsletter, so it is called The Anvil.
The Anvil, Issue 258, is the monthly newsletter of
the USS Hephaestus, NCC-2004, of Starfleet, The
International Star Trek Fan Association. All terms
and phrases from Star Trek are owned by
Paramount Pictures Corporation, a division of
Paramount Communications and all rights are
reserved.

Greetings, Just came back from Summit 2013. It was nice to see some of my friends from previous summits. We had a lot of fun discussing Star Trek and other sci-fi related info. I also was able to pick up a Romulan War Bird (TOS) Hallmark ornament that I didn’t have for a good price. Check ship’s log for Hephaestus related summit news. April social will be the Spring Cookout. Bring what you want for a meal or something you would like to share with the rest of us. The Hephaestus will provide chips, cookies and drinks. We will be playing games, watching Star Trek and also have a poker tournament to raise funds for the chapter. I hope to see you all there. Alabama Phoenix Festival will be at the end of May. I am Trek Trak director. If you want to help, go to their web site and sign up. Ask to assist the Trek Trak if you want to help out. Also we will have a chance to give people an opportunity to learn about Starfleet on Saturday night. If you want you can provide snacks for the party that night. Email me if you want to bring something.
I am always looking for people to contribute to the Anvil. If you have any topics of interest you would like to see in the newsletter send your articles or updates to [email protected], subject Anvil.
As always see you around the ship, Capt. MarkAdam Miller [email protected]
P.S. I chose Colm Meaney (Chief Miles Edward O’Brien) for the cover because of St. Patrick’s Day.

The activities, at the social, included viewing and commenting on the Super Bowl ads that were shown this year. As always, snacks and drinks were served. I like to thank Sue Ellen Mohney for providing the information since I was ill and not able to attend.

March 8-10, 2013 Summit
A fun time was had in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. Our Second Officer, Lt. Commander Brenda Miller, came in second in the Dalmuti Tournament. The Chapter was recognized for Perfect Reporting for the 2012 calendar year. Our Marine Unit, 654th Marine Strike Group, was recognized for its perfect reporting for the 2012 calendar year. Also the head of our Marine Unit, Neil R Yawn, was awarded the Brigade Service Commendation. Congratulations Neil.
Attendance: 3 people from the Hephaestus
Personnel Updates:
If you have any news or accomplishments you would like to share with the group please email them to me at: [email protected]. Also your personal updates can give your Captain added info to help get you recognition and an award at summit for your accomplishments.
SSttaarrfflleeeett MMaarriinnee CCoorrppss Greetings,
The 654th MSG is looking for members. There is a completely different set of Academy schools for those trying to get
the Boothby awards. There is no pressure in joining. There are two categories: Active which means all ranks will be
Marine ranks, and Reserve which mean you stay primary Fleet and only use Marine ranks when doing marine stuff.
Contact Major General Neil Yawn if you are interested or have questions.

President Mix’s genres
The president, at a press conference on March 1, 2013, mixed up Star Trek and Star Wars. He is quoted
as saying, “I know that this has been some of the conventional wisdom that’s been floating around Washington
that somehow, even though most people agree that I’m being reasonable, that most people agree I’m presenting
a fair deal, the fact that they don’t take it means that I should somehow, you know, do a Jedi mind-meld with
these folks and convince them to do what’s right.” I wonder if the President has been talking with J.J. Abrams,
the director of the next Star Trek and Star Wars movies, and Abrams has let slip some info on the upcoming
movies’ tie-ins.
Captain Kirk shows up at the Oscars
William Shatner portrayed Captain Kirk in a skit at the Oscars. Mr. Shatner showed up on a large
screen in what is called the Maroon Monster. He then proceeds to tell the Oscar Host Seth MacFarlane, “I’ve
come back in time from the 23rd century to stop you from destroying the Academy Awards.” He went on to
read newspaper headlines from the future, including “Seth MacFarlane Worst Oscar Host Ever.” It is good to
see Mr. Shatner back in the Captains seat.
One of Pluto’s Moons to be named Vulcan
One of the two moons of Pluto discovered by the Hubble Telescope in 2011 and 2012 may be called
Vulcan. A poll run by the Seti Institute in California garnered 450,324 for the name Vulcan. The po1l does not
guarantee that the moon will be called Vulcan but it does make it a top contender. Romulus was also put up as
a name for the other moon but was taken off because Romulus is the name of a moon around asteroid 87 Silvia.
Both, Leonard Nimoy and William Shatner back the names via their twitter accounts.
Peter Weller’s Character revealed
Peter Weller’s character in Star Trek: Into The Darkness has been revealed. I will not spoil it here but
you can Google it and find out who he will be playing in the up coming movie. The reveal came about because
of a 30 minute screening for the press in London. Also 38 minutes was screened in San Paulo, Brazil.
