1st Priority: High School Graduation

Students meet graduation requirements with BOTH AOC and COC coursework

All students must finish graduation requirements not taught at AOC by the end of first semester senior year

Students will transfer to residence high school if graduation requirements are not met by this deadline

HS Grad Requirements--Recap Most requirements are met with high school classes Most students will graduate with more than 220/230 credits Students who fail grad requirements met with COC classes MUST

repeat these classes ASAP, preferably in the next term Students who fail AOC classes must make them up in summer

school of that year Students who are not successful and jeopardize their graduation

may be sent to their residence high school the next school year. Seniors who fail graduation requirements in fall term will be sent

to their residence high school in spring term to graduate on time

GPA Calculation and Weighting A GPA is the grade point average of earned grades.

There are over 15 ways to calculate a GPA.

The GPA is a quick way to evaluate a student’s achievement.

The Hart District uses a 4 point scale and each grade is assigned points on the scale.

A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1, F = 0

The term “weighting” is used when higher value (or weight) is given to a grade earned in an advanced level class. Students must earn grades of C or better to earn the extra point.

A = 5, B = 4, C = 3, D =1, F = 0

Institutions’ policies differ about what classes are considered advanced and should receive weighted points.

3 types of advanced levels

1. grade--English 10 and Honors English 10

2. subject—Chemistry and Honors Chemistry

3. education—secondary and post-secondary or high school and college

(AP courses are introductory college level classes)

18

Page 19: The AOC Educational Plan - Edl HS Grad Requirements English 40 credits AOC—4 years Mathematics 30 20 for 2018 AOC or AOC/COC Physical Science 10 AOC Chem—10th grade Biological

GPA Calculation and Weighting Hart District weights honors, AP, and IB classes for grades of A, B, C.

Hart District weights transferable college level classes for grades of A, B, C.

Hart District does NOT weight college PE or dance activity classes.

A notation of NCT on a transcript indicates that the course is NOT a transferable college level class and not weighted by the Hart District.

College/university standard practice is to recognize college level courses as advanced level. Institutions assume these classes are weighted in the GPA. We use the NCT designation to draw attention to classes not weighted.

Transcripts show the cumulative weighted and un-weighted GPAs.

Credits earned for a class are also calculated in the GPA. Classes with higher credits affect the GPA more than a lower credit class. For example, a 5 unit college math class that earns 10 high school credits would be counted more than a 3 unit college class that earns 5 high school credits.

UC/CSU A-G GPA Policy UC/CSU A-G Course Search

Search for high school, community college, and program A-G course lists

See which AOC/COC courses are approved

https://hs-articulation.ucop.edu/agcourselist

The UC/CSU determines the A-G courses that earn weighted credit

Search results show which courses are weighted

9th and 12th grades are NOT calculated in the A-G GPA

The UC/CSU limits the number of extra points to 8 total

1 point is earned for 1 semester letter grade per course

Only 4 points can be earned in 10th grade

8 pts Total just with COC classes:10th: fall COC =1pt; spring COC = 1pt; summer COC = 1pt

11th: fall COC = 2pts; spring COC = 2 pts; summer COC 1pt20

Major Preparation Courses

Major Prep with GenEd and (maybe) electives are required to transfer

Major Prep—required courses to be eligible for major

MP—specific by university campus

www.assist.org is database for all major prep agreements in CA

Agreements are between COC and specific UC/CSU campus

How to Use Assist instructions on AOC Counseling website

Look under COC Resources

MP courses usually have pre-requisite courses

Associate Degrees/ Certifications3 TYPES of Associate Degrees (AD)1. COC (local) AA/AS: uses COC GenEd Requirements and COC Major Course Lists2. AD-T (Associate Degree Transfer): For CSU system ONLY, uses the IGETC or CSUGE for GenEd and each has major course lists3. Liberal Arts & Sciences (LAS) AA using CSUGE or IGETC in Humanities or Math and Science or Social Science; each has major course list

Local, AD-T, LAS Major courses1. All major course requirements are mandatory for degree2. See COC Counseling website for course lists under Associate Degree tab

60 unit Minimum TOTAL1. Course can be counted in TOTAL only ONCE2. Course can meet more than one requirement

Example: History 111 is 3 units and can be used to meet both a Social Science GenEd and AIR, it still is only 3 of the 60 units

3. CAUTION: GenEd and major course complete but still NOT have 60 total units

Issues1. Multiple degrees CAN be earned at one time2. 1 and only 1 course can be taken in the summer AFTER high school graduation and count toward 1 degree3. If a student goes directly to a 4-year with an AD, credits are awarded according to the receiving institution’s policies. 4. An AD does NOT guarantee junior status.

Career Certifications1. Awarded upon completion of certification courses2. Certification list on COC Counseling website under Certificates tab3. Certifications can be completed while working on high school diploma, AA degree, and/or transfer

Re-Evaluation of Status Process1. Evaluation of college classes for credit is completed according to the receiving

institution’s policies.2. Private school policies usually limit the number of units AND TYPE of course

granted credit. GenEd vs Elective, not for major3. UC/CSU usually grants credit for UC/CSU transferable classes4. Exceptions may occur for sequential requirements and students may be required

to repeat courses*For example, a student finishes Physics 220 and 221 but not 222. The institution may not have a sequence divided into the same as COC’s which means the student takes the courses their institution requires.

5. Students who go DIRECT will have to request a “re-evaluation of status” from their institution after they are admitted.

6. Status is determined by number of units and type of requirements met.*For example, a student may have 60 transferable units and be a “junior in units” but be a sophomore in the major until all major preparation is complete.
