“Sometimes I talk to much!” said Alf Sundström, boss of Cartest in Arjeplog.

When he was planning a big fire drill for Knorr-Bremse, for his staff and for the fire brigade and rescue services he was so sure it would not be successful that he promised to crawl on his knees to the fire station if it was.

Now Alf is trying to think of ways to avoid fulfilling his promise. On the other hand, he is pleased that he was wrong about the fire drill and that it was a success.

He claims he did not say from where he would be crawling and maybe it is fortunate that the Cartest Hotel is situated next door to the fire station.

The fire drill was very successful and they all learned a few things.

Alf explained that only two people at Knorr-Bremse, one of his custom-ers, knew about the drill in advance, as well as Alf and the fire chief.

Early one morning smoke machines

Crawling in the Name of Safety

began to fill the corridors of the Knorr-Bremse offices with smoke. At about nine o’clock the fire alarm started shouting out its warning.

The people working at Knorr-Bremse performed very well with a couple of exceptions. One or two did not want to leave the office, but the

howling alarm eventually forced them all out of the building.

One important thing Alf realized is that the entrance gate should be made to stay open in an emergency, so that

the rescue vehicles can enter without having to wait for him. And that he does not have to stand by the gate and wait for each of the vehicles to arrive.

Alf used to be a part-time fire fighter and he has been trying for a long time to carry out a big unannounced fire drill, but until now it has been met with some resistance due to the costs involved.

“Suddenly it all changed”, he said “and I’m happy that we could do it and that it worked so well”.

This week at least two test cars burnt up, one on the Porsche tracks and one in Colmis.

It is good to know that we have a fully functional rescue service in Arjeplog. Read more on page 6.

This & That...• Winter indoors? In order to secure a longer and more reliable winter climate there are now discussions concerning the making of an indoor winter testing arena. First of all, it is important to find out if there is a need for this. If the need is established, then it must be checked if this could be a suitable way of improving the infra-structure.

• In an effort to encourage a healthy lifestyle, the public health group of Arjeplog’s kommun invites everyone (locals and car testers alike) to go skiing on the cross country tracks. During the month of March, you will see post boxes (Aktivitetslåda) by these tracks. When you have skied you can leave a note with your name and phone number and you may win a prize. It does not matter what distance you ski, you can partake in the lottery of fine prizes.

• Restaurang Vuogga is a new restaurant in the kommun situated in Vuoggatjålme in the mountains, on the arctic circle, 105 km from the town of Arjeplog.

This is a popular tourist area where people come in the winter to enjoy the skiing, snow-mobiling and wonderful mountain scenery. In the summer and autumn, people go fishing, hiking and hunting in the mountains.

The resort of Vuoggatjålme is situated just off the Silver Road. They welcome you to visit, have lunch of the day or à la carte meals based on local meat and fish. See page 8.

Happy 20th Birthday to The Arjeplog Times

Question: How do you experience Arjeplog? Answer: “Very cold, lots of trees, so quiet and school seems very easy. Here you can have a laptop and a cell phone and nobody cares if you come late for class.” Two students, Manuel Katrein-itsch,19 and Christian Füss,18 from Munich, Germany are in Arjeplog at the moment. For the past two weeks they have been visiting Hornavan Secondary School and now they are at the BMW facility getting valuable education and training.

Later this term some students from Arjeplog will visit the school in Germany.

They are part of an exchange programme between the BMW school in Munich and Hornavanskolan in Arjeplog.

During the weeks that these two boys were at the school in Arjeplog, all the lessons were held in German or in English. This was beneficial to the students as well as the teachers.

The visiting students are overwhelmed by the reception

they received and the experiences they had while in Arjeplog.

They said that the students in Arjeplog are very friendly and helpful. They had been drifting in cars, which was great fun. They had also been snow-mobiling and couldn’t believe how fast they go.

These two students are very pleased to have the opportunity to visit Lapland and when they go back to Germany they will take two Swedish students from Hornavanskolan with them.

When we visited Hornavankolan to meet these boys, they were late for class. This was the first time it hap-pened and they laughingly agreed that it is easy to learn new (bad) habits.

Successful Student Exchange, Germany & Sweden

Christian Füss and Manuel Katreinitsch listening intently to David Palopää, teacher at Hornavanskolan.

We were pleasantly surprised to receive a happy birthday card from Hans Bauer, Munich, Germany in which he wrote:

“Happy Birthday zur 20th season The Arjeplog Times. Bis vor 2 Jahren war ich seit 1979 in Arjeplog mit meiner Firma TÜV Bayern Munchen. Waren 3 x mit Foto in der Times die ich heute noch jede Woche im internet lese. Mit freundlichen Grüßen, Gute Zeit, Hans Bauer.”

For those who do not understand German: “Since 1979 until two years

ago I have been in Arjeplog with my company TÜV Bayern Munich. My photo was 3 times in the Times, which I still read every week in the internet. Sincerely, Hans Bauer.”

He also sent us an issue of the The Arjeplog Times from March 15, 1991 in which his company TÜV, Teckniche Überwachungs Verein were featured. They were in Arjeplog testing tyres on ice and snow.

We thank him for his loyal support and good wishes.

The Hot SeatCandid interview with a car tester

Name: Fredric Bailly

Age: 26

Married? I have a girlfriend.

Home: Paris, France.

Company: BWIGroup

Occupation: I am an engineer, in charge of advance development of MagneRide.

Favourite food: I don’t think I could live without cheese and meat. I come from the region where they make Brie cheese and I love it.

Dream car: An Audi, of course. A black, sporty Audi R8 would be nice.

Present car: I have an old Audi A80 from ‘94.

Spare time activities: I enjoy reading and also watching movies.

I like to visit the different monu-ments and places in Paris. I try to keep to the quiet streets and avoid the people and the large shops. I go travelling to the various European cities. Paris is so central and it is easy to get from there to many different places in Europe.

What is good in Arjeplog? The wilderness, the landscape and the countryside, so wonderful. We drove from Paris (it took three days) and driving through Swden, you feel that the people you meet are nice. I have only been here a few days so these are my first impressions only.

What is bad in Arjeplog? It is cold. When we went to dinner the other night, we walked from the private house we are staying in to the restaurant and my nose was so cold! But we are here for the cold, so I will not complain.

What music you enjoy?Everything that is not commercial- jazz, rock, electro, soul.

What is important in life?Carpe Diem, sieze the day!Health is important and you should enjoy every moment of your life. You should enjoy what you do in your professional and in your private life.

Fredric Bailly, BWI Group

BWIGroup car testers in Arjeplog, fr left Remy Duchatelet and Sebastien Plancke.

In November, 2009 BWIGroup, BeijingWest Industries, became the owner of Delphi’s suspension and brake busi-nesses, serving the same well-known automotive, motor-cycle, and specialty vehicle customers.

The essential elements of the business continue with the same cutting-edge technology, management team, innova-tive employees and quality products.

BWIGroup’s resources, strong interest, and long term focus were added to the team and the engineers that work in the research and development plant in France are happy to continue coming to Arjeplog to do their winter testing.

The partners of The Arjeplog Times enable us to produce & publish this important paper. We thank them for their solidarity, their belief in

the need of the paper and their financial contribution.Britta Flinkfeldt Jansson Mayor, Arjeplogs kommun.

Partners of The Arjeplog Times

I am the mayor of Arjeplog. This means that I am the only politician in Arjeplog who works full-time with municipal issues.

In Sweden, citizens choose a new municipal council every four years and this local council then elects the various committees to deal with more specialized issues. We have the Childcare and Education Committee, that works mainly with school issues, the Social Welfare Committee that deals with social care issues, the Public Authority Committee, that handles permits, inspections and the like.

The Municipal Executive Committee, which I chair has the overall, daily responsibility for all municipal activities.

Our main task is to try and get more people to want to live and work in Arjeplog. In Sweden all local residents first and foremost pay municipality taxes. The more people who live here, the more revenue we get in the form of taxes.

In 2010 our population increased by 18 persons. It may seem little, but for us it is very good to see that more people want to live here and 18 new residents represent an improvement in income for us. This money is needed to take care of the people who live here and ensure that young people receive the education they are entitled to.

In Arjeplog, we think that children and youngsters should have Sweden’s best education. We want to ensure that they are well prepared for life and for further studies.

Both in Sweden and in other countries, for example Germany, there is currently a shortage of engineers, and according to information I have received, it will only get worse. Therefore, we work a lot with the development and future of our schools and hope that some of our own students will find work in the automotive business.

In this work, we are grateful for the support from the companies that are here during the auto-motive testing season. Have a great week.

Occupation: I own and run ‘Fiskimport’ which I bought in at the end of 2010. Before that, I was a taxi owner (Tabcab) for 16 years.

Favourite food: My mother’s pickled herring au gratin (herring with potatoes, onions, cream). I also like meat.

Dream car: Mercedes M-class, silver.

Present car: Mercedes E-class and an Opel Vectra.

Spare-time activities: When I have time, I like to be with my family, my twin boys take a lot of

time and energy. I am a passionate bridge player and a politician in my spare time. I am a member of the council of Arvidsjaur’s kommun or municipality.

What’s good in ArvidsjaurFirst of all it is safe, it is a good place for children to grow up. You do not

need to be afraid here. Nature and the silence is good. Although Arvidsjaur is a small

place, you can get just about anything you need. Because we are far from large places, we have to make sure that we have everything we need right here and the selection of goods is large for a place this small.

What’s bad in Arvidsjaur? There are too few people and it is hard to get people to stay here and to move here.

Everyone knows everyone, which is both good and bad.

What music do you listen to?All kinds of music. I listen mostly to the radio at work and I like ACDC.

What’s important in life? To wake up and feel that it is a wonderful new day.

It is important to be happy with yourself and to enjoy being with your family and friends.

Preparing the salmon at Fiskimport, Peter Rydfjäll, Sara Karlsson and Erik Lundberg.

Peter Smokes and Sells Fish - but doesn’t like fishingPeter Rydfjäll doesn’t like to kill fish, so he doesn’t go fishing but recently he bought ‘Fiskimport’ where he process-es and sells fish.

It is the only specialized fish shop in Arvidsjaur and is situated in the back streets of the town. Peter says this is good as he can smoke the salmon right there in his smoking hut.

Their popular smoked salmon has been tried, tasted and enjoyed by the group of chefs that cook for the Nobel Peace prize dinner, held every year in Stockhom. It is also very popular among car testers and other visitors.

Fiskimport also offers a variety of other specialities from the sea. Visit this shop or Lena’s Fish Shop in Arjeplog, a local distributor.

Mario went from Afrodite to Scan Mahmoud Ismail, also known as Mario, is a well-known person in Arvidsjaur. He used to own the popular Afrodite restaurant but he sold it and started Mario’s Grill which is a ‘Scan’ franchise.

Mario is a family man, he comes originally from Lebanon but has lived in Sweden for 19 years. He ran Afrodite very successfully but when his third child was soon to be born he decided that he needed more time for his family and sold that restaurant.

He then started the Scan restaurant, Mario’s Grill, which is a fast food and hamburger restaurant with a difference. They serve a large daily lunch, Dagens, which consists of many different vegetables, fruits and salads as well as 3 or 4 main dishes, fresh bread and good sauces.

The meat is from the traditional Swedish company Scan that pride

themselves on good Swedish meat which according to them means: fresh and healthy animals; environmentally friendly production; clean meat which is salmonella-free, hormone free and antibiotics free with no drug residues.

Mario specially planned and designed his restaurant in terms of the way it looks and the food that is served and the result is very good.

Mario is pleased with his new restaurant in Arvids-jaur.

“We are pleasantly surprised that car testers are involved in relatively few serious accidents”, said Hans Eric Jonsson, head of the fire brigade and rescue services in Arjeplog.

He says that most of the car testing companies deal with the accidents they are involved in by themselves, specially if there are no people injured.

Last year an exercise was carried out on the ice involving two cars. Hans-Eric was told that they should have arrived much quicker on the scene.

Exactly one week later there was a real accident in the same place but this time the fire brigade received a lot of praise for being so quick.

“I told them it was different because this time it was for real”, Jonsson said, smiling.

The fire brigade and rescue services in Arjeplog employ three full-time

firemen including Hans-Eric. There are also 23 part-time firemen and 5 part-time firewomen, all of whom have other regular jobs but are on duty for one week, every four weeks.

When they are on duty, they have to report to the fire station within five minutes of the alarm going off.

The fire brigade is situated in town across the road from the OKQ8 petrol station.

The alarm goes off about 80 or 90 times per year. Half of all alarm calls are automated alarms due to errors and/or sabotage.

Every year there are three or four fires in private houses and the rescue services are also called out for traffic and other accidents as well as to rescue animals, eg moose that go through the ice. In the summer, there can be forest fires, the number and size of the fires vary from year to year.

Reliable Fire and Rescue Services

Hans-Eric Jonsson is the head of the fire and rescue services in Arjeplog.

The budget for the fire and rescue services which is part of the Kommun is just over four million SEK per year.
