Temporary Bulletin Deadlines

This coming Friday, June 9, at 6 pm here at St. Mary’s Cathedral we will ordain Deacon Matthew Nash to the priesthood for the Diocese of Grand Island.

Everyone has a vocation. Vocation is the knowledge in my soul that my life ultimately belongs to God. Whatever I choose to do with my life and whoever I choose to be with must ultimately lead me to a deeper realization of this knowledge. My work must help me depend more on God. My relationships must help me to uncover the relationship that God desires with me and with all of creation.

The discovery of one’s vocation is an uncovering of one’s identity. Thomas Merton says, “The secret of my identity is hidden in the love and mercy of God…Ultimately the only way that I can be myself is to become identified with Him in whom is hidden the reason and fulfillment of my existence” (New Seeds of Contemplation). We belong to God. We find our meaning in God.

One of the graces of priesthood for me is that I am continually placed in positions and relationships which help me to depend more and more upon the grace of God. I am very aware of my limits and weaknesses. I am also aware of the sheer generosity and goodness of God. God provides and God provides freely. The fact that God provides simply means that I can depend upon God. Thank God I do not have to depend solely upon myself because I would surely mess it up!

Ultimately who we are is found in the person of Christ. When we know Christ we know that we are part of Christ’s body. We have a role and a place. We find meaning for our lives. Whether we are married, single or ordained we will find our meaning in Christ.

You are invited to the Cathedral this Friday evening to experience a young man who has found his vocation and meaning for his life in the priesthood.

Have you found meaning for your life?

In Christ,

Fr. Jim

Catholic Daughters June Meeting

Our campaign goal is to raise $2 million. The Bishop is donating at least $1 million to the campaign, leaving $1 million for the parish to raise. We currently have $855,927 pledged. Out of the amount that has been pledged, we have received $196,241, which is 23%. This leaves $144,073 to be pledged. A reminder that this is a 3-year campaign. You are welcome to make your payments weekly, monthly, quarterly, annually or however you prefer. We will have specially marked “Capital Campaign” envelopes in your envelope packet that you receive in the mail. These will temporarily take the place of the “Building Fund” envelopes. If you do not receive envelopes in the mail it may be because we do not have you registered in the parish. Please go to our parish website under the “Contact us” button to register online. We also have special envelopes available in the pamphlet rack at the entrance of the church. Please write your name on the envelope so that we can help you keep track of your offering.

We will be sending periodic letters to remind you of your pledge and keep you up-to-date with the campaign. Many thanks to all who have participated. If we exceed our goal – we will certainly put it to good use trying to better serve God and God’s people here at the Cathedral and in the world around us. Thank you for your prayers and support of your parish.

Catholic Daughters, Court Ave Maria will meet Tuesday, June 6th 6:30 pm at Cathedral Square for their annual salad supper. Members are asked to bring a salad. The host committee will provide the desserts. We will be making our prayer blankets after our meal. Everyone is welcome to attend. For questions Call Barbara Bosak 379-2175 with any questions.

Part I: Tick information: Enjoying a hike through the forest is a great way to get exercise and enjoy the splendor of nature, but there are dangers lurking along the trails. Lyme disease, which is caused by the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi, is the most common tick-borne in-fection in North America. The disease, which is quite serious and can cause a range of symptoms that affect the skin, joints, and nervous systems. The bacteria are transmitted through the bite of an infected black-legged tick. The primary host of ticks are small rodents like mice, small mammals like squirrels and raccoons, deer, and birds. Predominantly between April and September, tick season is in full bloom just as everyone is enjoying the great outdoors, but there are ways to help you reduce your risk of getting a tick-borne disease. Here are six ways to avoid summer tick bites while hiking. Before you venture out on the trails, know what to look for, where to expect ticks and how to avoid them. Ticks live in moist and humid environments, especially near wooded and grassy areas. Hiking through leaf litter, shrubs, tall grassy mead-ows, and forests can increase your chances of a tick bite. You may not even know you’ve been bitten, until you notice a small, red rash appear. Over the next few days, the tell-tale red, bulls-eye pattern, with a red outer ring surrounded by a clear area becomes apparent. Flu-like symptoms follow—fever, chills, body aches, headache, and fatigue. If you suspect you have been bitten by a tick, see the doctor as soon as possible. Treatment for Lyme disease is most effective when started early.

SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: Pentecost Sunday; Julian Calendar Pentecost Monday: Ninth Week in Ordinary Time; St. Boniface Tuesday: St. Norbert Friday: St. Ephrem Saturday: Blessed Virgin Mary

Today Readings First Reading — Filled with the Holy Spirit, the apostles begin to speak in tongues (Acts 2:1-11). Psalm — Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth (Psalm 104). Second Reading — In one Spirit we are baptized into one body and given to drink of one Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:3b-7, 12-13). Gospel — Jesus Christ appears to the disciples and sends them on their mission with the power to forgive or retain sins through the Holy Spirit (John 20:19-23).

Last week we heard that, following the Ascension, the disci-ples, Mary, and other followers of the Lord retreated to the upper room in prayer. This week we hear that, while praying in that room, the Holy Spirit comes upon them. Jesus’ post-Resurrection promise, recounted in today’s Gospel, is fulfilled: the power of the Holy Spirit comes upon Jesus’ followers. Saint Paul tells us that all of us, in some way, are given gifts of the Holy Spirit, gifts that can be used to spread the Good News. Today is one of the Church’s greatest festivals. Let us carry the refrain of the responsorial psalm with us throughout the coming week: “Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth!” (Psalm 104:30). Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Vocations. That many people may hear the call of Christ and follow Him in the priesthood and religious life. Pro Life. That all people will come to value human life as God’s precious gift to be accepted and loved rather than a burden to be destroyed.

Noso-tros pertenecemos a Dios.

Another note from Fr. Jim: This weekend we celebrated the Feast of Pentecost. This is the birthday of the Church. This is the event of God sending the Holy Spirit to complete the work that God began in Christ. That work is to be accomplished in the community of believers called the Church. God continues to be present to us even after Christ ascended into heaven.

Fifty days after the Passover the disciples are gathered together in one place when they are suddenly engulfed in mighty wind and startled by flames of fire resting on each of them. The disciples were filled with the Spirit. This newly given Spirit allowed them to speak to many pilgrims in their own language. The Spirit empowered them to go out into the world and proclaim the Good News.

The basis for the story of Pentecost comes from the story of the tower of Babel in Genesis (chapter 11). In that story, the people are building a huge tower to climb to the heavens in defiance of God. As a result of their attempt to become like God – God confuses their language so that they can no longer understand each other (this is where we get the word to “babble”). The result of their folly is division, discord and deep alienation.

Pentecost is the event by which God corrects what went wrong at Babel.

In the story of Babel humans tried to climb to heaven to be like God. At Pentecost we celebrate because we do not have to climb a tower to find God. God continues to come down here to earth in order to make accessible to us everything that God has. At Babel we find that humans were divided and misunderstood. Pentecost reveals the wonderful way that God brings unity and understanding to people who were divided.

As Christians we miss the point of Pentecost if we fail to recognize that the same Spirit of God which breathed new life and unity into the disciples all those years ago – continues to breathe life and unity into us in this place and time. It is this same Holy Spirit that is present in our Church today.

A personal and intimate breath of God somehow inspired and empowered this small band of disciples to go out into the world and be Christ-like. So it is to be with us. The Spirit of God now breathes in us. The flame of God’s life and love enters our lives and lifts us to new possibilities and a new unity.

During these summer months let us allow this Spirit to reign freely in our lives. Spend time in prayer. Spend time with the Church. Invite God’s spirit to give you a new life and a new direction.

God bless. Fr. Jim

St. Mary’s Cathedral will honor the Eucharist on the Feast of Corpus Christi with a Eucharistic procession and Benediction on Sunday June 18. During this procession, a priest or deacon will display the Eucharist in a gold vessel called a monstrance and lead the faithful in prayer as they process around the surrounding neighborhood. The Eucharistic procession will start at 3pm at the Cathedral, 112 South Cedar Street, Grand Island Ne. It will then proceed west on Division Street, south on Cleburn Street, east on John Street, then North on Cedar Street and end back at the Cathedral concluding with a Benediction. The procession route is about 0.7 mile in length. The Prayer Intentions will be for: Vocations to Priesthood and Religious Life; and for Justice for Immigrants and Global Poverty. The Feast of Corpus Christi was instituted in 1264 by Pope Urban IV. Also known as the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ, this day celebrates in a special way the Holy Eucharist, which Catholics believe is truly the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of the Lord Jesus Christ.
