Media can affect every bullet point when it comes to satisfying all facets of your client’s extensive job checklist. For print providers, it’s essential to get creative when trying to impress your clients and land the job. Coming up with a novel concept for installing the graphics, adding an inter-esting use of lighting, providing depth with three-dimensional elements – these are all ways to help deliver the “wow” factor your clients strive for.

But you can also get creative up front in the decision-making process, by steering your client toward a diff erent or unconventional media as you begin mapping out the project. Which is where specialty media can come into play: For instance, instead of specifying a standard vinyl for a tradeshow booth graphic, why not a fabric to lend a softer feel to the display? For the client’s showroom, where the of-ferings typically change frequently, maybe magnetic media or a magnetic system is the answer? And for that job for the company president’s offi ce – perhaps she would appreciate not just framed graphics, but wall coverings to completely envelope her business environment in visuals?

Both the SR and Print versions of Falconboard are 100% paper-based, recyclable products made from renew-able resources (up to 40% recycled fiber content minimum); they feature an engineered paper core and water-based adhesives, coupled with a white printing surface. Dibond consists of two sheets of 0.012-in. aluminum bonded to a polyethylene core. Pre-painted with a polyester finish, it’s available in 2-, 3-, and 4-mm thicknesses and in sizes up to 60 x 120 in. and is compatible with solvent and UV-curable printers. Its e-panel is an aluminum composite material (ACM) made of two pre-painted sheets of 0.008-in. alumi-num with a solid polyethylene core. Masked on both sides, it’s suitable for direct digital print, and can be saw cut, routed, or punched. In 2-mm white (4 x 8-ft sheets), 3-mm white (4

x 8-, 5 x 10-ft sheets), and 4-mm white (4 x 8-ft sheets).

Sintra is a lightweight, rigid, expanded PVC board with a low-gloss, matte finish. It’s available in a wide range of thicknesses—from 1 to 13 mm—and in various colors and sheet sizes. For faster printing speeds, Sintra Print-Optimized versions are available in 3- and 6-mm thicknesses. Also available is e-PVC, a low-density, lighter, less-rigid PVC board.

Gatorfoam, polystyrene foam between Luxcell wood-fiber veneer liners, is available for direct printing in sheets up to 60 x 120 in. and ³⁄₁₆- to 2-in. thick. Also offered is Gatorplast, a ³⁄₁₆- to ½-in. thick extruded poly-styrene foam core laminated on both sides with high-impact polystyrene.

Like oil is to industry, inks could be said to be the “liquid gold” of the printing market. Yes, it’s sometimes all too easy to neglect the costs of inks when compared to the costs of rigid substrates, direct labor, and so on, but pull out your records and see what you spent on ink last year – it adds up.

In fact, when you consider the amount of ink that’s used per job coupled with the consumable’s rising costs, it’s a wonder that ink suppliers haven’t begun delivering this valuable commodity to print shops via armored car these days. And because very few business costs once elevated to a certain plateau ever significantly drop, it’s safe to say that print providers should be closely analyzing their ink usage and their supplier roster on a regular basis.
