Hello Mr. Don “Cheese” Akerlow;

I travel for business often and findmyself more frequently in the SanJose, CA area. I found a couple ofreally good places to shoot poolwhile on the road. While at theCalifornia Billiards Club, I found acopy of your publication “The Break”.I was excited to see that such apublication existed. I enjoyedreading the contents and was veryjealous that I have not seen anypublication like this in the North Eastarea. As I enjoy competion, I was veryinterested in the listing of places tofind tournament play on a daily basisin multiple states. Are you aware of, and can point meto, any publications like yours in theNorth East so I can subscribe to it.Additionally, I wanted to see if youhad any advice on how to travel withyour own pool cue due to all thehightened security measures in theairports. I do not believe, I would beable to carry a pool cue onto anairplane. I assume security wouldlook upon it as a potential weapon.....Of course it is only a weapon whenused by me on the pool table : ) Butseriously, I am concerned about thevalue of my cue and “just anybody”being able to get to them easily.Thank you for any assistance andadvice you can offer.Regards; Paul LaVerdiere

There are no publications to myknowledge in the Northeast coveringregional tournaments.Traveling with your cue can be doneby shipping it Fedex or UPSovernight to your destination. Besure to insure it for more than thevalue of the cue.

Draw DisciplineHere’s another great Artistic Pool Shot/Challenge. This shot is from theDraw Discipline and has a Degree of Difficulty (DOD) of 7. Object ballletters coincide with corresponding pocket letters. To set this shot up positionF ball per grid one diamond segment off of the foot cushion and one diamondsegment off of #4, (long rail), cushion. The A ball is centered between thepocket points. The cue ball is in hand. ON THE FOOT STRING. behind

line X.The objective of this shot is to shoot the cue ball to F ball and draw back toA ball. You must make both object balls as pocket letter designated. Thecue ball may contact an extra cushion before making A ball. A scratch isalso allowed. Here are some helpful hints on executing this shot. Don’traise the butt of your cue to get draw. Keep your cue as level to the planeof the table as possible, ie. lower your bridge hand. Pay close attention tohow low you are cueing the cue ball. Don’t use excessive power. Makesure your warm-up strokes are smooth and don’t forget to follow-throughon your execution stroke.

from: Tom DennehyTo all members and all future members of The International Brotherhoodof Cueist Union:1. What is the players’ union going to do for you? Thirty percent of allunion dues goes to added money to approximately 12 tournaments a year. This money is held by the union and paid to the winner and up to as manyplaces as we can, so every union member has the opportunity to get backhis union dues for the year, which is only $85.00 a year, so it turns out to bea win, win situation for all union players.Other important benefits the union will be offering union players (startingapproximately October 2007) will be health insurance, eye glasses anddental insurance and disability insurance, all at discounted group rates.2. What happens to the rest of the money? Two thirds of the money theunion holds, 10-20% of that money will go to a point system which will bepaid out at the end of the year’s final tournament.3. Who decides what tournaments the union is going to add moneyto? This is done by the Board of Directors, consisting of six individuals, and in the event of a tie it will be decided by a coin toss at a tournamentevent which everyone can witness.4. How will you know how much money the union has left at the endof the year? Each member will receive a financial statement at the end ofthe year.5. Point system? We are working on a point system so that the playerwith the most points will receive a cash award at the end of each year.6. Entry fees at tournaments? If the entry fee is $75.00 all non-unionmembers will have to pay $100.00. The additional $25.00 for all thosewho don’t belong to the union, 70% of that money will be paid into thepension fund which will be divided into every individuals’ account. Last month I went over the basic rules of one pocket. If you missed that issue, go to the On The BreakNews website to catch up. A good site for bothrules and suggestions on playing one pocket iswww.onepocket.org where you can find thecomplete rules, history of the game, and storiesabout legendary players. Briefly the rules are: eachplayer gets one of the corner pockets, and you haveto make any 8 balls in your pocket before the otherplayer makes 8 in his. You get to shoot again if youmake a ball in your pocket. The golden strategy at one pocket is to never leaveyour opponent any easy shot to his pocket, andpreferably no shot at all. How to do that, and howto overcome an opponent who does that well is atleast half the game. It is useful to be able to makea ball from time to time, but you should have that

skill down pretty well from other games before taking up one pocket. In Shot 1 is the typical result of your opponent’s break. You have no obviousshot for your pocket, marked by A. Inspecting the remainder of the rack, itlooks like the 6-7 is a dead combination to your pocket, but if the gapsbetween the balls are in the wrong places, it will either not have enoughspeed to get to the pocket or will be kissed out by the other balls. Pass onthese unless you are sure.

A very standardresponse is to play thecue ball to hit thethree ball, go to theend rail and then slidebetween the 2 and thecushion to leave thecue ball at B. If youleave the cue ballnearly in the jaws ofyour opponent’spocket, he will havelittle to shoot at. Theproblem with thissafety is that if the cueball touches the 2 ballafter the rail, it mayscratch. Suppose youdon’t scratch, but thecue ball ends upabout where the 2 is.In that case, youropponent will have aneasy bank for the 1ball since you movedthe 3 out of the waywhile attempting thesafe.A similar shot thatdoesn’t leave thebank is to play the cueball directly to the cushion at C to knock the 2 up the table. The does havethe potential to scratch, and requires a very precise hit on the 2.A word about banks. You have to be able to make them at all speeds andwith various kinds of English. Short banks like the 1 ball cross-corner thatyou might leave your opponent in the paragraph above should be automatic. On difficult banks, you have to be able to leave the cue ball somewherevery safe and the object ball within a diamond of your pocket if it misses. You will learn how speed and English change the bank angles if you playone pocket.Back to our problem. Often after the break you will find the original headball where the 4 is. An easy shot is to bank that straight across to your sideof the table and leave the cue ball on the cushion at D. The main thing is toget the speed right to leave the cue ball frozen or nearly frozen so any ballnear your opponent’s pocket is harder to shoot. Note that you are nottrying to get the 4 near your pocket, but rather just over to your side of thetable. Maybe you will have a long bank on it later, but mostly you don’twant it on your opponent’s side.A more aggressive shot, but one that takes quite a bit more skill, is to bankthe 5 toward your pocket and leave the cue ball against the top of the rackwhere the “X” is. If the 5 hits the 8 ball, both of them will move toward yourpocket. If the 5 misses the 8 ball, you have to be careful not to hit it so hardthat it bounces back across the table to your opponent’s side. If you leavethe cue ball stuck on the rack, and an object ball near E, your opponenthas no shot and no safety to play. The required soft, dead draw is not easyto master.

Samm Diep (c) December 2006What do you do when you miss a shot or scratch?

How do you react when your opponent plays asafety on you? How about when your opponentgets a lucky roll and hooks you? Do you getangry? Do you swear or shout? Does it affectyour next shot? Most likely, if you react negatively, that attitudecarries over to your next shot. Have you ever

been so angry with what you were facingthat it consumed you? Were you soflustered and overwhelmed by the thoughtsof “I can’t believe I did that!” or “Thatsucked!” or “What a crappy roll!”? Believeit or not, those negative feelings caninfluence the decisions we make and howwe execute them.

I remember the days of being an incredibly emotional player. I woreeverything on my sleeve. You could tell if I hooked myself or if I got perfectshape. And, you could definitely tell that I was going to miss my next shotby how affected I was from the previous one. I expressed every singlefeeling towards every single shot. By the end of each match, whether Iwon or lost, I was completely emotionally depleted. It’s taken me years togradually overcome this natural response andstep towards a new outlook for each shot. It’s not an easy transition to completelyseparate yourself from your emotions duringa match, but just give it a try and you’ll beginnoticing immediate benefits. During thistransition, look around. Notice the players inthe room that pound their cue into the groundand yell and scream profanities at the balls. How silly do they look? (Nothing personal, ifthis is you.) What did that change? Now, watchAllison, Thorsten, Karen, and many of theother top pros. Notice their calmness and lack of response, regardless ofwhat shot they face. During competition, this flat affect strengthens theirconsistency.Every ounce of negative energy wasted on reacting to something in thepast, something that you can not change, drains you. Better yet, redirectthat energy and focus on something you can change. You can not changethe outcome from the previous shot, but you can change and control whathappens next with the actions you take. Why allow yourself to waste allthat energy reacting to what your opponent did to you? It still doesn’t changewhat you need to do. Rather, use that energy to determine which rail tokick at or how to play a nasty safety.Try this: When you’re hooked or faced with a tough shot, whether you didit to yourself or your opponent left it for you, try to approach the table witha feeling of thankfulness. Be thankful to have a shot. Whether you like it ornot, a shot is a chance to win. So, don’t piss and moan about what you leftyourself or if you get out of line. Redirect that energy! If your opponent leftyou that same tough shot, you would be thankful to be at the table again.Appreciate the fact that you’re at the table and make the best of it.Nobody said it would be easy. In fact, not reacting at all can even affectyour opponent. I love it when my opponent gets all bent out of shape andjumps out of their seat because they can’t tell if I have a shot or not. I’m notsaying that you can’t be a great player if you show your emotions, but justdon’t allow it to consume you.So, as you’re making out your list of resolutions add this one to it andmake it a positive year, every year.I wish you and your family a Happy & Prosperous New Year!Samm Diep - House Pro at Table Steaks East in Aurora, Coloradoblog.SammsPocket.com

Enter a real room operator to the business, Jimmy and Dorothy Wise tookover the Golden Cue room and brought truemanagement and promotional skills to thePortland metro area. Jimmy was an old timeplayer and Dorothy was a World Champ. Theyoperated the room until Jimmy died andDorothy went to work for Fischer a large tablemanufacturer.Dad and I traveled all over Washington,Oregon, Northern California and Idaho settingup over three thousand tables of all differentcolors and models. The largest room was inEverett, Washington, in October 1963. It was over 30 tables and we had tohurry for my wedding was to be on the 19th and the practice and dinnerwas Friday night and we were finishing up early that morning. Just in time.We got back and Saturday Brigid and I were married at Holy RedeemerChurch and off to San Francisco for a quick honeymoon and back to setup Sam’s Hollywood Billiards. We were so busy that the days just rantogether. The year before Dad and I had talked my Uncle Tony and AuntOlive to move from Chicago and put in a billiard room with us. They cameout and we did a 16 table room on the second floor over the Virginia Caféand the Embers. Shortly after we opened the Columbus Day storm hit andWayne’s Billiard Academy was the only place that had lights and a roofoverhead while the west hills had no power for two weeks. Grand CentralBowl was full of water and Amato’s was in darkness. Tony made so muchmoney that he bought Dad and I out. He ran a very successful room untilhe retired. The 6100 series was replaced by the Gold Crown II and our work was a loteasier. The GCII had the adjustable foot and the apron extrusions were cutdown to 4, each 1 foot pieces on the long apron and they added theextrusions to the ball box. These tables were a piece of cake to set up andrecover and are still the most sought after used table in the U. S. Most ofthe fat ladies skirts have been removed and the bowling alley colors havebeen changed to natural stains or black. They are still my favorite tableand remained in the line till the mid ‘70’s. Brunswick could no longer becompetitive as their costs went up and the other manufacturers were ableto produce a smaller markup. The Gold Crown III came along after I wasno longer a Brunswick dealer, but I have had plenty of exposure to them. The castings lost their color almost at once and the rubber was goofy. Theframe was light-weight and they began to fall apart before your eyes. Theyhad begun to lose their reputation as a force in the billiard business and aflood wiped out Brunswick’s plant in Virginia and they finally went out ofthe billiard business in the 80’s. It would be several years before they wouldcome back but no longer manufactured their own products, but found subcontractors that could produce equipment at a price that they could be inthe business and make a profit. Thanks to engineers like Marvin Eisenhauerwho set the standards required and Jim Balukas to market the tables.Brunswick came back and the Gold Crown IV became the new standard ofpool tables.I remained out of the Brunswick loop since I was a table manufacturer butstill feel the awe of that company’s name. I have not had a great deal ofexperience with the IV and have only set up those that have changedhomes. I have had several sets of rails to change rubber and have seenseveral that have had Artimas or other K66 rubber attached. The table isgreat except that the braces in the long direction have been forgotten. They now have adjustments in the frame to level the slate and all the new

BANKS

Kick-back strategyThe game ise i g h t - b a l land youhave thesolids. The8-ball isblocking thec o r n e rpocket. Itwouldn’t helpto make the7-ball, andwhile there

are various ways to play safe off the right side of the 3-ball, they don’timprove your chances, and they give your opponent a chance to play safein return. An ingenious play is to hit the 3-ball squarely with low backspinso that it banks off the end rail and back into the cueball. With the rightspeed, the cueball will end up near the 7-ball, and the 3-ball will be nearthe side pocket. You are now a big favorite to win because the 3-ball isaway from the blocked pocket and it’s hard for your opponent to lay downa decent safety. The position shown is contrived, but the idea of banking a ball back intothe cue ball is occasionally useful in safety play.

The Long WayFreeze the 1-ball and the 2-ball as shown. Hit the 1-ball from the given cue

b a l lpositiona n dw a t c hw h a thappens.The 2-ball ist h r o w ninto therail ando u ta g a i n ,

but sometimes picks up enough sidespin to hit the right end rail and reboundinto the upper left corner pocket. Don’t bet on it.At the bottom, the percentage is a little higher. Both balls are one ball widthfrom the cushion, which seems to rule out a bank shot. But the 3-ball canbe banked with the help of sidespin transferred from the cueball.

Jeffrey L. Howard, 36, diedunexpectedly of heart failure onTuesday, Dec. 12, 2006. He was bornOct. 21, 1970, in Omaha, Neb., toRoger and Mary (Lauderdale)Howard. In 1992, he moved to theBozeman area where he met and fellin love with his wife, Erin. They weremarried on Sept. 9, 2000. The joysof his life were his four-year-olddaughter and two-year-old son. Rodders Grub and Pub in OregonCity recently hosted the 2nd AnnualCascade Pool League MidseasonTournament. Good players, mixedwith players on the rise, met in thishandicapped extravaganza, whereover $2,300 in prize money waswon. The three-day weekend leaguetournament drew over 80 differentCPL players from over 44 leagueteams. They came to play one or allthe special events. The three-daytournament featured hundreds ofhandicapped 9-Ball, 8-Ball, andOpen Scotch Doubles games, played over eight tables.CPL operator Andrew Monstisstarted this annual event to provideCPL league players an opportunityto get together outside the regularweekly league match setting. ManyCPL players play week in and weekout throughout the entire year, somefor years on end. These players, allpart of a pool community, deservedthe opportunity to do more than justshow up weekly to qualify for theChinook Winds Regional. Monstisbelieves that doing something forthe players is vital, and plans for next

year’s event to provide even moreprize money. CPL is

sanctioned by the BCAPL,using BCA rules and

guidelines.Glenn Atwell, a

long-

standing CPLmember, gets mainnotice with the ‘hat trick’this year. He won theFriday 9-ball and Saturday8-ball singles events and theSunday Scotch Doublesevent with partner John Lewis.Glenn found himself fightinguphill handicapped battles allweekend … about 36 hours worthwhen the dust settled. PhilRothschild gave Glenn a stiff startupmatch, leading 4-0, but Glennpersevered and faced CodyJohnson in the 9-Ball finals. Codywon the first set from Glenn butcouldn’t double dip him. Cody is anup and coming player, having playedonly a year and a half. Glenn’s final8-ball opponent was Todd Gooch, anestablished master player. In theScotch Doubles finals, Glenn madea great 8-ball shot worth noting:Partially hooked, he launched thecue ball, caromed the 8-ball offanother ball and into the air, andcalmly watched while it fell neatlyinto his called corner pocket. It isgreat that a player of Glenn’s calibersupports league play, sharing hisknowledge and giving up tips. This year’s surprise gems wereMickey Mixon and John Jacobs, whoboth placed high in all events. Bigsingles wins came from

Susan Millhollin,Cathy Duenas andSteve Copher, who

beat up ontheir shareof higherr a n k e dplayersdur ingthe 8-b a l levent.Cody

Johnson & TonyDunlap showed off

some skills, playing very well.If you were watching, therewas great shot making and positionplay by regional master level playersincluding Steve Tune, Todd Gooch,Mike Dubendorf and AndrewMonstis. Other great match play wasseen from Cecil (‘Don’t touch myhat!’) Pickett and Paris Brown. KenChristensen, Dave Kartchner, andJake Morin made players earnwhatever they could get. The samewas true for Eve Stockstill, who played great. She isgetting tougher and gainingvaluable experience.Returning ScotchDoubles team JulieDeboer and MikeDubendorf broughttheir games again.Because of theh a n d i c a p s ,predictability went outthe window. Somepeople grumbled overgetting beat, but mostjust took their lumps. Some thought others received toomuch handicap, but many justplayed really well. It was hard forthose who had to give up a spot, butit did even out many matches. Manyplayers got an opportunity to beatplayers that they normally would not.The spot made it fun and gruelingand always uncertain. Open levelplayers could and did compete withthe master players. Improvedsportsmanship went to John Lewis

this year, while hecontinued togive playersfits on the table. Sean Stevensonwas running around trying toconvince players not that he couldplay but that he was giving up toomuch spot… however, that didn’treally work to his advantage. Andthen there were Jennifer Windelland Chrissy Yanez, who providedentertainment on and off the table.

Cathy Duenas didher part by beingKurt’s partner, andby getting Andrew

January 2007January 2007January 2007January 2007January 20071616161616By: Don “Cheese” AkerlowAn up and coming playerfrom the Vancouver areais Todd Speakman, whorecently won the Men’sMaster Division duringthe Western BCARegional 9-Balltournament this pastOctober.I had the opportunity tomeet with Todd, snap afew photos and shootsome pool. He is a verycompetitive person andplayed both VarsityBaseball and Basketballin high school. I askedhim about his experiencewinning Master’s and heremarked, “WinningMaster’s at the WesternBCA was unbelievable. After the last severalyears playing thetournament down thereand watching the finalsof a match, it was kind ofsurreal to find myself inthat position beingsurrounded by all thegreat players that werethere. I didn’t have toplay any of the top, topplayers. There are, likeyou said, so many greatplayers. They areobviously formidableopponents being in theMaster’s that if you don’thave to play a GlennAtwell or Schumacherright off the bat you canget deeper in thetournament. Thenobviously shooting poolagainst the good playerswhen I was deeper in thetournament made it theperfect tournament.”Todd had great trainingto reach this point. Thetwenty-eight year oldplayer noted that he hadonly played a few gamesof pool before going to

college. At the University ofWashington, he was part of a groupof 5 or 6 players that were verypassionate about becoming the bestaround. The competition started onthe dorm level. There were two 9 footBrunswick Anniversary tables in thedorm and he had to beat the best inthe dorms. From there he went tothe HUB (Husky Union Building)where they had fifteen 9foot Anniversary/Centennial pool tableswith better players.Todd and his friendswould watch videos, read books andwatched thegamblers at DrCues. Theya l s op l a y e dpool everyc h a n c ethey got.“The firstf e wyears Iwould goto classand thenplay 8-10hours a day.Got prettygood, prettyquick. Still lots tolearn,” Todd said.He also competedin the ACUINorthwest CollegeRegionals severaltimes andmentioned, “I lost tothose peskyCougar playersfrom Wazzu. Theyalways seemed to getthe better of me. I hadseveral high finishes but neverenough to go to Nationals.”When I asked Todd if he hadany mentors, he responded,“Not really, basically all my friends. We all wanted to get better and got

inspired from each other. Eventuallyfrom the course of being in collegefor 5 years, you shoot so many ballsand play so many games and learndifferent things from all the differentmedia that’s out there, that you getbetter.”Todd’s father was a big influence onhis love for the game. He was a goodlocal bar player and used to bring

home steaks and turkeys onThanksgiving. “I never playedpool with him one game until Iwas old enough to go into the barat 21 and at that point I wasalready better than he was.”During college Todd played pool

around the Seattle areaat the 211 Club

(which he used tosneak into), DrCues and inlocal bartournaments.S i n c egraduating,Todd hasmoved backto theVancouver

area andstarted playing in

the bar leagues withAPA. He was moved

to a 7 after the firstweek and that

handicap hasn’tchanged. His APA

league play has resultedin winning two Tri-Cups, awin at Regionals to get toNationals and play in LasVegas for the last twoyears. Branching out hestarted playing in smallerB tournaments andrecently won theCadillac Ranch “B”Tournament (seeMarch 2006 issueof The Break). Healso startedplaying in theWestern BCA

leagues, where he couldsurround himself with betterplayers on the same team, whichwas unlike the APA teams withtheir handicapping system. Tohis credit, he has finished wellat Regionals of the WesternBCA with a 3rd place finishin the Open “B” 8-ball,7th/8th in the Open “A”8-ball and won his first

TTTTTodd Speakmanodd Speakmanodd Speakmanodd Speakmanodd Speakman Master’s 9-ball tournament. Playingin different leagues during the weekwith sometimes as many as 4 leaguenights and tournaments on theweekends, Todd is always playingpool. He carries a custom made cueby Larry Schave, a Vancouvercuemaker. I asked him about his cueand he remarked, “It is a greatlooking cue that plays really well too.It was something I couldn’t get offthe rack. I wanted it 59” since I’m6’3”. After playing with 4 or 5 differentcues in the course of learning, I kindof like a 19 ½ ounce cue, balancedcorrectly so it doesn’t feel like aheavy cue.” He went on to talk abouthis ability to play pool, “Obviously I’dlike to get lessons, because I still feelthat my stance is awkward andwrong. I grip the cue too far back. These are all little tiny things thatsomeone could help me with bywatching me play and give mepointers as well.”What does the future hold for Todd?He will be going to Las Vegas thisyear with his team to play at BCANationals and has decided to enterthe singles event as well. I foundTodd to be a focused, competitiveyoung man who is eager to learn andbecome the best player he can be.In closing Todd added, “I would liketo thank “The Break” for doing this. It’s not everyday obviously, that youget an article like this written aboutyou. I know that there are plenty ofother good players around the stateand the Northwest that are way moredeserving than I am. A lot of thiscomes from knowing ‘”Coyote” andI would like to thank him and B J forseeing my ability to be a player aswell as Boomer and Merle, APAleague operators in the Portland/Vancouver area. The Western BCAput on a great tournament. They did

a good job allaround.”

Shotze’s has now completed its 5thseason and just like the rest, it wasa good one. This season consistedof (12) teams and a total of (36)players. This league was started togive the pool players in our area anopportunity to advance their gamefrom 8-ball into the world of 9-balland work with and watch thoseplayers who have been in the gameof 9-ball for a few years. I have beenable to see the improvement ofseveral players games during thisshort period and expect to see manymore. This league has gotten so big thatwe have actually had to turn a fewaway because there just hasn’t beenroom. This next season, which themeeting is on Jan 15th at 7pm, maybe no exception. The standing ruleof joining is: #1 - those who playedin the last season have first choice,#2 - past players who want to rejoin& #3 - any new players hoping tojoin. We have already got a list ofseveral players who fit into the #2 &#3 category’s. This year, though, weare going to try to make room foreverybody. So if you are trulyinterested, plz join us at the meeting. This year our payout for the entireleague was just short of $7,000.Every penny that the members putin is paid back out at 100% at theend of the year. Players haveseveral different ways to earn moneyin this league. They are: #1 - $1

paid for each game won, #2 - $1 paidfor each 9-ball break during the regleague play, #3 - top (10)percentages overall & top (2) womenpercentages, #4 - 9-ball break potduring the reg play or mysteryenvelopes at the end of the season,& #5 - players who physically play inthe singles tournament receivedcash for all places (even last). Ihonestly don’t believe there is abetter league for the player out thereanywhere in Washington state. The playoffs for this league is ranjust the same way we do our bigweekend tournaments. Longerraces for the A side and shorterraces for the B side and one longrace for all the marbles in the finals. This season saw a new Champion

crowned. He is our one and onlyadorable Treon Pham. Treon hascome close in all the past playoffsbut finally got over the hurdle andwon it all. His matches were, BernieF (7-5), Manny F (7-1), Marvin H (7-6), John T (7-3), his one and onlyloss against Jim Conway (8-9), DonMc (6-3) and then the back to thefinals.Jim Conway is a player that I haveknown for 20+ years and watchedhim win 8-ball league championshipsand tournaments in this area forever.Jim was also the very first winner forthis league in the playoffs. Thosewho know Jim, know that he is nopushover in these league playoffsand this one was no exception. Hismatches were, Joe Mc (7-2), Jim S

(7-0), Pat F (7-2), Don Mc (7-4),Treon P (9-8), and then the finals.Everyone who was here to watch thepoint match between Treon and Jimwas able to watch fabulous shotmaking and strategy play. Back andforth they went, game after game, and finally when Jim made the last9-ball, he let out a holler and thenquickly covered his mouth becausehe knew there was another matchgoing on nearby. It defiantly was astress reliever to get it over with. But it was only the beginning. Treoncame back with only one goal on hismind and that was to give Jim a runfor his money. Again the matchstarted out with the games goingback and forth with neither playergiving the other any slack and thestrategy play was coming fromeverywhere. I stated to a couple ofthe other players there that I couldsee this match going to a tie-breakeragain and either player could comeout winning it. But then, Treonstarted to get the upper hand. Firstone game and then another andbefore anyone knew it, he wasahead by (10-7) and on the hill. Jimwasn’t going to let it go easy butTreon kept up with pocketing oneball after another until the 9-ball wasit and then it was over. The finalscore was (11-8). What a match towatch.Congratulations Treon. You earnedthe title of Champion the hard way.

By: Don “Cheese” AkerlowSam’s Billiards is moving up – to thesecond floor with a new poolroom.Valerie Schwartz, owner of Sam’s,has created a new space on thesecond floor that has a warm, inviting feeling. I took photos of thenew poolroom while on deliverieslast month and I was impressed withthe room.I asked Valerie how the idea for thepoolroom came about and sheresponded, “My parents had the ideaback in the 70’s. Then they gotdivorced and my Dad never wentthrough with the renovations. Theyeven had architectural plans drawnup but since then all the codes havechanged. It had always beenplanned to do but for one reason oranother it didn’t happen until now. We’ve always talked about doing it.”By making the upstairs poolroom areality, Valerie has fulfilled a dreamthat her Mom & Dad had.Another plus for the poolroom is thatit is smoke free. I asked Valerie howthe customers and players like it,“The players seem to like it. It will

UpStairs @ Sam’s Billiards Hollywood District

remain smoke free as long as thecustomers use it. If not it will be likethe rest of the building. Right nowit’s quiet and away from things butwe have plans to put in a big screen

TV and have some other thingsgoing up. Since we’vejust opened it,we are kind ofseeing what itdoes. Wehaven’t evenhad a grandopening for ityet. We’re stillplanning that.”The poolroom and its stairwayentrance are very unique and I wasfascinated by the cleverness of itsconcept. When I askedValerie whose idea itwas for the railing onthe stairway shereplied, “Therailing on thestaircase with thecue sticks was the

architect’s idea. John Perkins,from theneighborhood,the HollywoodDistrict came upwith the idea.He’s fabulous.”The next thingyou notice onceyou enter theu p s t a i r spoolroom is theunique walldesign. Valeriec o m m e n t e d ,“Deb SeeleyDesigns did thepaint on thewall, the colorschemes andthe fabric. Theonly thing I

asked her to do was design the colorschemes around our lamps. Myfather made those lamps that are

over the dining tables. Hehandmade all those back in the 70’swhen they converted the downstairsarea from minors to having a beerand wine license. When they did thatthey made it more “night clubby” like.At the time the red and amber lightswere the colors that were in, so hemade them all. They used to hangover the pool tables but they gotwacked so many times with the cuesticks that it started destroying thelead. So over the years we’ve

replaced them with a regular bar withthree lamp shades hanging over it.I wanted to incorporate the lampsthat he made, because I’d savedthem, into the colors up there. I didn’tknow what colors would go goodwith the red and amber, so Deb

came up with everything, the chairs, fabric, everything. I appreciate allthe work and time she put into it.

The entire project took from May toDecember to complete and it waswell worth the wait. The food anddrink service is the same asdownstairs and the room is availablefor private parties. Sam’s HollywoodBilliards has been an icon in thePortland area since 1962 whenValerie’s parents, Sam and ShirleyChapman, first opened their doors.Over the years changes have comeand gone but each time there hasbeen a metamorphosis that has left

Sam’s even more inviting andfriendly. It is a great place to come, relax, enjoy a game of pool and havefun. Sam’s has a full bar andexcellent kitchen which boasts ofgreat meals like beef stroganoff, prime rib, pasta chicken and steaks.

Sam’s hosts a Straight Pool Leaguethat holds tournaments the firstSunday of the month. There are alsothe community events that Valerielikes to be a part of.In closing Valerie said she inviteseveryone to “Come in and checkus out”. Watch for the GrandOpening and all the other thingsValerie has planned. Sam’s is

located at 1845 NE 41st (in theHollywood District) Portland,Oregon. Phone 503-282-8266.

There was a veryunusual and yet “stellar”show Sunday night(November 5, 2006) at“Pool Table Magic” inWindsor Locks, Connecticut.

Tom “Dr. Cue” Rossmancame to Pool Table Magic to performa spectacular trick shot show neverbefore performed in thisfashion…..in total darkness!!! Theevent started with a “debut” TVshowing of the ESPN Trick ShotMagic competition held in Las Vegasthis past October, with “Dr. Cue” inthe finals against Mike Massey. Theshow was televised on the bigscreen in the main pool room while

“The Night The Stars Came Out”Written By: Lynn KulungianPool Table MagicSubmitted By: Tom“Dr.Cue” Rossman

Tom and his wifeMarty watched with other on-

lookers, as the trick shot starsperformed phenomenal shots thatwowed the spectators.

There was an additional treatwhen Mike Massey and BruceBarthelette showed up to watch thedebut showing and Tom’s eveningperformance. Bruce also played inthe ESPN event finishing rightbehind Mike and Tom. Mike, Bruce,Andy Segal, and Tom were part ofthe recent ESPN World Cup of TrickShots “Team” event at the MoheganSun in Uncasville, CT. Team USAwon over Team Europe in excitingfashion.

The televised show ended and“Dr. Cue” prepared to perform somemagic live. To everyone’s shock andsurprise, the room was plunged intototal darkness with a power failurethat affected over 10 neighboringtowns for several hours. Tom, beingthe excellent showman that he is,

performed his wide array of trick, fancy, skill, and novelty shots withflying colors aided with only a fewflashlights. The audience crowdedaround the table with just a fewemergency lights to show the wayand watched while “Dr. Cue”performed shot after shot amidstapplause, laughter, ooohs, ahhhhs, and cheers. Imagine shooting ashot where a ball flies off the tableinto a cowboy boot in the darkness! Both Tom and Mike Masseyaccomplished the feat in back toback efforts, while Bruce Bartheletteexecuted an “artistic pool” shot toperfection in the dark as well. Thecrowd was thrilled to be part of suchan adventure.

To finish off the show, Tom hadseven children in the crowd (newbudding stars) each shoot their owntrick shots, as they became“shooting stars” themselves. Thecrowd went wild! Even with the totaldarkness created by the power

outage, the “stars” sparkled brighterthan ever on this special night!

(continued from page 10)systems work well. The bolt lugshave a little problem and too muchpressure pulls them out. I had theopportunity to set up the table thatSteve Lingelbach had been using togive lessons. The table went up withno problems. Several of the lugswere gone but there were plenty inthe aprons to work. Artimas rubberwas put on, the usual problems werethere. Balls hoping short angles andballs that doubled back on the crosstable bank, but I was againimpressed with the entire table.Brunswick still has the magic nameand the magic touch. We will soonfind out how well the Chinese canbe directed to produce the highquality that the company expects.

2006 Northern Lights Shootoutat Chinook Winds for the WesternBCA regionals, graciously tookpictures for this gala event. Stevehad to figure out how to geteveryone to stop running aroundlong enough so that he could taketheir pictures. Cascade Pool Leaguedivision managers Joyce Gumm,Andrew Zuniga and Steve Markeralso did their parts to make this asuccessful event by getting the wordout via the weekly CPL newsletter.Hats off to Cathy and John ‘JJ’Johnson, owners of Rodders Gruband Pub, and their staff, for theircontinued support of CPL’s leagueplayers. They were instrumental inputting this event on the map. It isgreat to see sponsors holding localevents for league players. JJ doesit better than anyone, addingsignificant money to the pot, showing his players that it’s notalways about the buck and thatsuccess can be achieved throughfun and a great showing ofappreciation for his customers andfriends. CPL players wereappreciative of their effortsthroughout the weekend. Whenever you have a chance to leave the cue ball frozen to a ball or acushion, do so! If your opponent can’t draw the cue ball or even stop it, hisoptions are very limited. Don’t be lazy and try to leave the cue ball“somewhere close.” Work to leave it frozen. Do not surrender the inches— they are all important. In Shot 2 is a banking drill that will teach you to use speed and spin tochange the angle of the bank and control the cue ball. Place four balls ona line as shown with enough space between that each ball can be bankedto pocket P. Start with cue ball in hand, but after that you have to play fromwhere you leave it on the previous shot. Getting through all four half thetime on a table with large pockets is a reasonable goal.I hope these two articles have whetted your appetite for this great game. For me a main attraction is that one pocket allows a much wider range ofshots than most games, provided you can hide whitey when you are goingfor the difficult or impossible shot. For most players the immediate pay-back will be learning speed control of the cue ball down to the millimeter.

“I will never allow pool players to take afinancial hit”Trudeau Anticipates ShortenedSchedule, Promises RefundsIn an e-mail sent Dec. 18 at 3:37 p.m.,International Pool Tour Founder KevinTrudeau addressed several questionson the minds of players and hopefuls, most notably announcing that theschedule for the 2007 season will befinalized by March 1, and fewer eventsare anticipated. As such, those whoparticipated in qualifying tournament inpursuit of a 2007 tour card will berefunded their $2,000 entry fee if theschedule is abbreviated. The full text of Trudeau’s e-mail isincluded below:From: [email protected]: [email protected]

Promises, Promises....Sent: Mon, 18 Dec 2006 3:37 PMSubject: Message from Kevin TrudeauSubject: IPT UpdatesDear IPT players & all qualifierparticipants, I am writing this to all IPTplayers, and every player whoparticipated in a 2007 Tour CardQualifying Tournament. Here are theupdates relating to the IPT 2007Season and the IPT’s future:We are still working on the merger/acquisition with Ho Interactive as wellas the option of taking the IPT publicindependently. These negotiations anddetails are going rather slow but still lookencouraging. We are still actively pursuing majorsponsorship packages for the 2007season. Great progress has been madealthough nothing is definitive as of yet.We anticipate announcing the 2007season schedule by March 1st. Theschedule may be smaller than we hadhoped. We are on schedule for paying theplayers for the 2006 World Open. Weanticipate getting all players paid in fullwithin the first quarter of 2007.If the IPT is not capable of fulfilling the2007 season schedule as we hadpreviously announced, the IPT willrefund the $2000 entry fee to everysingle player who entered a qualifyingtournament for a 2007 Tour Card! ByMarch 1st, we should know what the2007 season schedule will be.As you all know, I love pool. The IPT ismeant to be a tour where the playersare put first. I want the IPT to have

Kevin Trudeau

tournaments each and every year andgrow. Most importantly I want to makesure that the players are always put first. If the IPT struggles, I will personallycontinue to lose money. However, theplayers will never lose a single pennyeven if the IPT fails. This is why if wecannot meet the expectations for the2007 season, we will refund the entryfees for every player who entered a2007 Tour Card qualifier. Obviously, players entered the qualifier based onthe potential winnings and monetaryguarantees mentioned for 2007 TourCard holders. If these cannot be fulfilledwe will make sure that the entry feeswill be refunded in full. In any otherbusiness, such as the airlines, thiswould not happen. The business wouldsimply file for bankruptcy and have nolegal obligation to pay back anyone. However, I love pool and I love poolplayers! I will never allow pool playersto take a financial hit. I hope that youcan appreciate my efforts andcommitment to the IPT and to you theplayers. It appears that the IPT will continue withtournaments although the schedulemay be smaller than we initiallyforecasted. We all agree that the mostimportant thing is that the IPT continuein some fashion or another. During thisholiday season, be thankful for all thathas been accomplished this year andbe hopeful for all the great things thatwe will accomplish in the future.Happy holidays to all, Kevin Trudeau,Founder
