Goodlettsville, TennesseeThe Women’s Professional BilliardAssociation (WPBA) will inductBelinda Campos Calhoun, TheTexas Belle, from Austin into theWPBA Hall of Fame on November8 at their 2006Annual Banquet. The Banquet willbe held at theChinook WindsCasino in LincolnCity, Oregon inconjunction withthe Cuetec CuesN a t i o n a lC h a m p i o n s h i pWomen’s TourEvent.Belinda wasintroduced to poolby a fellow shewas dating duringthe summer of 1971, in Austin,Texas. “My first attempts were sodisastrous, it became an instantchallenge,” says Calhoun. “The firsttime I saw a National Billiard Newsin 1972 and read that there weretournaments and championships Iknew what I wanted to do.”She qualified to play in her first U.S.Open 14.1 (Straight Pool)Championship in 1977 in her firstattempt. “Mother and I flew toChicago and took the bus toRockford, Illinois for my firstqualifier. The following month Icompeted in the U.S. Open inDayton, Ohio and finished 3rd.” Shecredits her determination to thedifficulty of the game itself. When asked what being a pro hasmeant to her, she replies, “a lifetimeof dedication and sacrifice pursinga passion.” A story that typifies theprogress our sport has made, saysCalhoun, “In 1985, myself, and threeother players were in Kansas Cityfor a tournament. We were beingpulled over and I’m shouting “hidethe cues, hide the cues.” Today, there is awe and wonder displayedwhen I proudly say, “I’m a

professional pool player.”“Being inducted into the WPBA Hallof Fame and joining players likeJean Balukas, Dorothy Wise andRuth McGinnis never entered my

mind. When Istarted playing itwas strictly aboutstriving forexcellence andperfection,” saidCalhoun. “Now allthe years of hardwork have paid off. It’s just like pool.Focus on theprocess and theresults will come.”In addition toplaying pool everyday, giving privateand group

In a recent interview, to beincluded in the 2007 WPBA MediaGuide Calhoun was asked, “whatare the best words of advice youhave received from a friend?” Heranswer… DO IT!!The Women’s Professional BilliardAssociation was formed in 1976 topromote competitive 9-Ball. In 1976the tournaments were scarce withprize money barely covering thewinner ’s expenses. Theorganization has grown from ahandful of players into a wellorganized professional tourincluding a program of nineaffiliated, recognized regional toursserving the needs of the over onethousand members in 2006. Sincethe WPBA began airing on ESPNin 1993, many of the women havebecome familiar names.Although there is no physical Hallof Fame at this time, the WPBA isworking on a “Virtual Hall of Fame”at WPBA.com for the near future.

IPT Players

To Be PAID

says TrudeauYou be the judge! We have receiveddozens of phone calls from poolplayers all over the country andhundreds of emails trying to find outif we know anything about the IPTand the subject was all the same. When are we going to get paid? We’ve tried to answer the best wecan but we didn’t know anythingmore than they did. Questions rangefrom “Is Chicago a go? Did Sigel andLoree Jon get paid the advertisedamounts? What about 2007? Whenwill the players get paid from Reno?Does Ho Interactive actually exist?”(Ho is reported to be buying IPT) Oneemailer couldn’t find Ho Interactiveon the internet. They stated that IPTwas the only entity that hasmentioned them and that was in anIPT press release. Does the IPTexist? Is it a corporation? Does ithave a trademark? According tohttp://www.uspto.gov/ IPT is not aregistered trademark. What is it’slegal status? These are all goodquestions. Billiard Digest did aninterview with Kevin Trudeau on thesubject of being paid from Reno.I would suggest logging ontowww.billiardsdigest.com to readthe interview and make your ownjudgement on the future of the IPT.We will be accepting emails andmail on this subject for theDecember issue. This month’s Artistic Shot is from the stroke Discipline and has a Degreeof Difficulty (DOD)of 8. There are no object balls in this challenge, just adollar bill.To setup the dollar bill, place its edge even with the head cushions nose. The bill is centered halfway between pocket D and the first diamond overfrom pocket D, as diagrammed. The cue ball is in hand behind thecenterline, (B-E). The objective of this challenge is to shoot the cue ball 8

or 9 cushions in diagram pattern to the dollar bill. the cue ball must stopon or over the dollar bill. The vertical edge of the cue ball closest to thedollar bill will determine success of the shot. Here are a few helpful hints on how to execute this shot. I place my cueball in the 1x1 diagram quadrant where the number 8 is in the diagram. Ifyou place the cue ball as diagram you risk the chance of hitting your handon the table as you follow through. You’ll need to use at least a 10 inchbridge length so you can execute a long fast warm up stroke. I cue thecue ball with a touch of left English and a touch of draw. The closer thecue ball hits the fifth rail by pocket E, close to scratching, the better yourchances of making the shot. If your head is low on the cue when youshoot pool, stand up more so your upper body doesn’t get in the way asyou follow through with this powerful stroke. Have fun with this one.

There are easy ways and hard ways to playposition. “Not crossing the line” is one principlethat will help you to find the easy ways.In the upper situation, you are playing eight ballwith just the one ball left from your group. Theproblem is to get shape on the rather restrictedeight ball. The simplest way to get into the shapezone is to shoot with a little draw to go along PathA. The shot is straight enough that you will haveto use a little extra power to move the cue ball farenough. The problem is to get just the right speedto end in the shape zone. You have about onehand-span for the margin of error to avoid beingblocked by the 10 or 15.For players who have both draw and english intheir toolbox, Path B is a much better choice.Even though the shot is more complicated, if you

get the cue ball to hit by the first diamond as shown, the speed of the shotcan be off by a lot and you will still have a shot on the eight. The idea hereis that as long as you can get the right direction on the cue ball the speedwill not be important. The cue ball will be traveling directly along the lineof the next shot.Is the added complication of the draw and english worth the benefit? That’s up to how you play. If draw is still a miscuing mystery for you andthe use of side spin causes most of your shots to miss by a lot, youshould stick with the simple way. If you want to make any real progress, you have to master the other techniques.Another point in the upper shot is the choice between the narrow andwide part of the shape zone. While Path A takes the least draw (or english),if you pull it to the left with some more draw or english, you will cross theshape zone where it is wider, although you are still going across the lineof your next shot.

Another example is thelower diagram. To getfrom the 1 to the 2 (atnine ball) you could justroll the cue ball alongPath C. This shot is alittle touchy againbecause you need tohave just the right speedon the cue ball toavoid beingblocked bythe 3 ball.Path Dtakes more e f f o r t ,but as long as you haveenough control of yourdraw to land on the rightspot on the sidecushion, shape isnearly guaranteed. One other factor in thisshot is that C must behit quite softly and if thetable is not flat a missis likely. D allows youto hit the ball morefirmly.Once you get used tothe idea of not crossingthe line, you will start to

10 THINGS THAT SEPARATE APROFESSIONAL FROM AN AMATEUR

Samm Diep © October 2006Last month, I had the honor andpleasure of competing in a small pro-am tournament with five WPBA starsand only three invited amateurs. Myearly exit from the tournament wasdisappointing but watching the rest ofthe tournament gave me greatinspiration. As I studied the finalmatches, it brought to mind a list often things that separate theprofessionals from the amateurs. Here are my observations:1. Holding the cue ball for shape. Apro will not miss a shot when they

need to hold the cue ball for position. Many times, amateurs will shoot ashot tentatively when they’re thinking about where the cue ball needs tobe, particularly on shots where you need to hold the cue ball for shape.Often times, an amateur player will just barely under cut a ball and endup with “perfect” position.2. Tougher opening shots. Pros are not afraid to take the tougheropening shot to get the better run out. In this case, the easier openingshot may be a solid, but stripes may have the ideal layout. They willchoose the “correct” opening shot regardless of the difficulty.3. Overcoming a miss or loss. Pros can break and run the first twogames of a match after missing an easy shot to lose the previous match.I watched Laura Smith miss the second-to-last ball to lose the matchjust before mine, only to break and run the first two games of our match. She wasn’t beating herself up over the miss. If she was, it didn’t show atall. She played flawlessly.4. Getting back in line. When they get out of line, pros will make thetough shot in front of them and get back in line. Often times, instead offocusing on how to get out of a jam, amateurs are still dwelling on howthey got themselves into it. Therefore, their energy is not on making theshot and getting back in line. It’s wasted on the previous bad shot. Perfectexample, pointing to the table at where you intended to leave the cue ball.5. Strength to run a rack after being down. After being down 3-0 againsther own friend, Monica Webb flew out of her seat after a dry break byHelena Thornfeldt. She would run that rack and the following one. Aprofessional does not let the score distract or defeat them.6. Takes the break on a miscue. I watched Helena take the break fromMonica, her own friend and traveling partner, after she miscued on herattempt. The term “professional” does not only refer to their occupationin this case. They’re all business.7. Table run after a miscue. On the flip side, in the same rack, aftermiscuing and losing the break, Helena broke dry and Monica maintainedher composure and ran that rack out. A professional is simply that. Theyhave a job to get done and it doesn’t matter if they are playing their friendof their enemy. It will not stop them from doing their job.8. A pro gets closer. Generally speaking, professionals get closer totheir next object ball. Instead of just deciding what general area or whatline the cue ball needs to be in, a professional will pinpoint a spot on thetable and it is usually within a couple diamonds of their next shot. Amateursmay be left with a long, tester because they were more concerned withmaking the last ball. That’s how pros make it look so easy; they just don’tleave themselves tough shots.9. Consistent pre-shot routine and ball address. Most professionalsare very religious about their pre-shot routine, sometimes down to thenumber of warm-up strokes before firing in the ball. If you pay closeattention, professionals address the ball in the same manner and gothrough the same series of motions prior to each shot, regardless ofdifficulty.10. Fire in the last ball. If you watch enough ESPN, you’ll notice thatmost of the time, the last ball on the table is fired in. Unless it’s necessary, rarely is it babied or rolled into the pocket. A professional player is nottentative about shooting the last ball on the table. They stroke it in withconfidence. They don’t take any chances with the ball rolling off or skiddingon them. Fire in the hole!I know there are many more things that separate a professional from anamateur than this, but these are some points I noticed last weekend. Ifyou already find yourself doing many of these things then you’re just onestep closer to playing like a pro.The holidays are just around the corner. 19451945 was a very exciting year. The war was over and the world celebratedthe dawn of a new era. Brunswick was ready to begin producing pooltables for the Billiard rooms that would be opening for the boys when theyreturned from Europe and Asia. During the war the company producedtables for the war effort and the boys playedpool in bases all over the world and whenthey returned they would flock to the billiardrooms that would be opening. The drawingboards were full of new ideas and theengineers planned to change the tables forthe first time since the French revolution. Itwas the 100th year since Brunswick hadbeen in business so it was time for somenew ideas and the bells and whistles wereabout to sound.Since the dawn of the indoor billiard table bolts had passed through therail horizontally through the rail to fasten them to the bed of the table.Since the early table beds were wood it was an easy task but as slatewas used for the bed it became a difficult task. A hole had to be drilledhorizontally through the slate and vertically to place a nut for the bolt to gointo. That nut had to be perfectly positioned and held in place so that thebolts could be tightened without cross threading and be removed and

reinserted time and timeagain. A light went on inan engineer=s head, Whynot insert them verticallythrough the slate into thebottom of the rail. Simplestupid there isn’t enoughroom. The table frame isin the way and the slateisn’t wide enough or longenough to facilitate thisradical idea; so theymade the slate 11/2"wider all the way aroundand drilled holes throughthe surface. Now theythought that by losing thelower part of the rail theywould give up the rigidity

of the bouncing surface; so the railwould go from 4 to 6 inches and

plates would be added to accept the bolts coming up through the slate. The design people took the engineers ideas and thought to get rid of theboxy idea and put some curves and rounds to the design. A casting wasdesigned to accept the pocket and the pocket was changed to the moremodern style we see on the tables today. The frame was made smallerand cantilevered and a deep apron was designed to cover the exposedunder frame. Since this was the 100th year lets call one an Anniversaryand lets use all thisscrap Aluminum fromthe airplanes that will notbe used to fight theenemy and call it theCentennial for 100years. They alsodesigned theSportsman CF theModern and the Sentinelfor Uncle Sam. The firstthree were big hits; themodern was only madefor a few years and theneed for thegovernment dwindledsince they had so many Liberty and Victory left over from the War effort.Orders came in so fast for these new tables that the factory was notready and a few necessary refinements were needed. They needed slateso badly that there was not time for it to cure and they had left out the longsupports to keep the slate from sagging. The legs on the Centennial andAnniversary were bolted through the frame into the top of the leg and the

SINK-INSWhen a ball hits a rail, it sinks into the rubber. The depression can be asdeep as a quarter of an inch on a hard stroke, which opens the door to agroup of shots I call sink-ins. Some are easy; some aren’t. They cansave the day in escaping from hooks and in creating problems for yourcontemptible and loathsome opponent.

An easy oneThis easy three-cushion-first double-the-rail shot ispossible becausethe cue ball sinksinto the rubber toescape from behindthe 1-ball. Withmore left sidespin, the same patterncan be used to hitthe 2-ball. NoEnglish or running(right) English will

send the cue ball along the dashed line to hit the 3-ball.

An even easier oneMany of the shotsdiagrammed in my bookare tough even foradvanced players. Tocounterbalance that, here’s one so easy thatyou can teach it to tinychildren. They may beso pleased at making areverse-English, double-the-rail combination shotthat they will becomecaptivated by the gameand unfit for any otheractivity.

The draw curveShooting intothe rail withdraw makesthe cueballpath curve. Here you notonly escapewithout hittingthe 4-ball bycompressingthe rubber, youhit the 3-ball atthe other endof the table. The 3-ball,

incidentally, is a ball width from the right end rail, making it a big target forthe player trying to escape from the hook. When laying down a safety, trynot to leave the target ball close to the rail.Note the second cueball trapped behind the 5-ball. By using the sink-intechnique, from this position you can hit a second ball no matter where itis on the table. In some cases you will need to use two or three rails.

MEDFORD, ORBack in the days of Willie Mosconi andMinnesota Fats the real test of a poolplayer’s skill was 14 & one continuousor Straight Pool. That’s what Fats andFast Eddie Felson were playing in theHustler. When television arrived in thefifties, straight pool took a back seat to 9ball, a faster game with an element ofluck that played better to TV audiences.Nine ball is quick and exciting becauseslop counts. Players race to 6,7 or 8games to win the match and that leavesplenty of room for commercials between games. Straight Pool is a raceto 100, 125 or 150 balls with no real breaks for commercials and no slop.A player would have to miss often and in championship games you don’tsee many misses. Guys like Mosconi would run 150 often. So, for yearsnine ball has been getting all the publicity.Last December I tried to go with the flow and switch to nine ball. I entereda tournament in Reno and left feeling empty. I vowed to start a straightpool league back home and in January I did.Nate’s Great Straight Pool League started looking for players in Januaryof this year. My friends and I expected about a dozen players to sign upwhich would have been great. What we got was a surprising 25 members. The league was going to meet once a month every month to play a matchbut they voted to play two games a month in a round robin format. Whata treat for us!The league is handicapped so that players from medium to advanced allhave a chance to win. Matches are played anytime but you will probablysee the best matches on the last Wednesday of every month at Rack’em.The winner gets $450 at the end of the year with a total purse of $1,250 allgoing to players and the trophy. The league gets nothing.Straight Pool is back, at least in Southern Oregon. Great players like IrishMike Jones, Fickle Terry Mickle and Squeaky Bob Hilton are always around.Squeaky Bob recently ran 73 balls in a match against Tall Paul Kinney.Even Tall Paul said he enjoyed watching that. He ran 91 on me last week.Mike Jones has a 65 ball run, Terry Mickle has 50, Wayne Whiting has 42and Dave Smith, the owner of Rack’em has 40.Some of the finest players in the State have joined the league from Medford,Ashland, Grants Pass and even Roseburg. Lightning Wayne Whiting, 82year old Dead-Eye Frank Mc Lain and Boom-A-Rang Mike Morang arealways looking for a straight pool game over nine ball now. It’s a truer testof skill and all the good pool players know it.So, if you’re in the area of Rack’em some time, swing by and see if youcan catch a Nate’s Great Straight Pool League match. Look for a littlesign underneath the table light that tells you to be considerate... a leaguematch is underway. Pull up a chair and just watch. It’s free and you areguaranteed to see some of the best pool you have ever seen in your lifewith no commercial interruptions.Owner Dave Smith, Rack’em on Riverside, Medford backs Nates’ GreatStraight Pool Leage with Championship Trophy

Final Standings for the “Chip” Classicpool tournament held at Eagles Club#326, Bozeman, Montana. Thistournament was held SaturdayOctober 14, 2006 with a great turn outof 43 players.A special Thank You goes out to all theplayers that showed up and our addedmoney sponsors. For those of you who might havemissed the explanation of what a

The format is a race to ONE (1) (an absolute brutalgame). Anyone can win. If you win, you stay on the same table and waitfor your next opponent. Some people are born Lucky; some are just Lucky. Lucky Staehly wasparalyzed from the waist down in an automobile accident and was confinedto a wheel chair for the rest of his life. That didn’t destroy his spirit. Hefound a home at the county poor farm in Troutdale and spent his yearssocializing, lifting weights, playing pool and racing about in his wheel chair.

Every time Dad and Iwould head to the Poorfarm to work on the pooltables, there would beLucky on the side of theroad looking to race us tothe job. I clocked Lucky at25mph as we raced to theentrance and by the timewe parked and got out ourtools Lucky would be bythe tables. He loved to playpool and had thatsledgehammer break weall dream about and he

had a great view of the shots from his seat in the chair. Lucky Staehlywould have been so proud to have his name posted over the entrance toMcMenamins newest addition to their list of poolrooms. We just finished installing three 46x92 pro size Madison style tables two41/2x9 regent pool tables that we built and a magnificent 6x12 Englishbilliard (snooker) table. I have worked on a good many tables from Englandand they are always a challenge, but this one had me stumped. It was identical to the Burroughs and Watts at McMenamins Grand Lodgein McMinnville and we assumed that it was an older model. The framewas made of Cedar and the Legs and lower rails were Honduran

Mahogany. There had been a coat ofdark varnish stain applied to the entiretable that had gone bad over the yearsand masked the product below. I didnot discover that the rail wereAmaranth the wood of the immortalsin a beautiful quilted pattern. The footrail had the Ivory nameplate just likethe Burroughs plate but had no

lettering. Wehad toremove it toput on thefalse rails weh a ddeveloped tocover theBolts we hadto designb e c a u s e

there was no original Hardware sowe covered with a false rail theBurroughs table at the Grand lodge. As we took off the plate the backsidehad the Name J.A. Aschroft. We put on the outside of the false rail andlearned a great lesson. Never assume that you know it all. We found away to fit an old set of Brunswick snooker castings to fill the bill for themissing Aschroft castings and the table became a real beauty. The room is located in the basement of the Hotel in Troutdale Oregonand is the type of a billiardroom that you alwayswanted to walk into but youwere probably too youngor not even born. Asalways the McMenaminsout did themselves onoutfitting the room with allthe treats for the eyes. Thesound system is great andfood is served at yourtable if you are playingpool. The grounds arevery well cared and thereare so many things to seeand do that it is well worth the visit. The McMenamins are constantly expanding and Pool has become a verysuccessful part of their business. As Mike says “If it’s fun lets do it”. Anddo it he does. The week before Lucky’s opened we finished a new roomon Monroe Street in Corvallis. It is located right across from the Chem.Bldg at Oregon State University. And as soon as the doors opened it was

packed and is still going strong. Mike always comes up with somethingnew and exciting to catch your eye. On one wall there are a collection ofsinks from 8ft. from the floor to the top of the ceiling and water runs fromone to the next. It’s the most unusual water fall I have ever seen and I amsure that you will have to see it to believe it.There was one small problem with the layout of the place. They plannedthe pool tables for the second floor. We had restored a 5x10 Newportstyle snooker table and the slate was 1 2@ thick and weighs 450 poundsper section. First problem they ran over my toe with the hand truck andthen I stepped into a bucket of black paint that someone put in our way.Everyone but me got a big kick out of it. The Pool table slate was only1"thick but was still a task;however, Casey Luce,Steven Ashley and a verycute young lady ElyssaAckerman helped me getthe slate up those 27stairs. They will be able totell their kids how they hadto deliver the pool tablesto the second floor. To put the excitement andlife into every one of theMcMenamins they have afull staff of artists and myfavorite is Jenny Joyce. I look forward to seeing her at work at each place. She is very inventive and expressive in her designs and always open tosuggestions. Going into any of the pubs in the ever-growing chain is mademore pleasant because of their work. The Corvallis pub has a special place in Mike McMenamins’ heart becauseyears ago when he was a student at OSU he flipped burgers in a restaurantin the same location and learned his skill as a restauranteur. As soon asthe new sight became available he jumped on it and we began to plan thepool tables, the brewery, the artwork and the signed posters of theconcerts that played at the Crystal Ballroom, and all the fun and excitingthings that go with a McMenamins’ Pub. The results all must be seen tobe believed.

K C’s Midway Bar & GrillBy: Don “Cheese” Akerlow

I sat down with KraigPauli inside his newpoolroom, which isinside K C’s Midwayand we talked about hisnew room. I remarkedabout the streetconstruction projectthat went on in front ofhis location.Kraig said, “Theconstruction startedSeptember ’04 andfinished in early August’05. I joked that I knewwhat it was like to havea business at the endof a dead end road.We bought thisbuilding right before theconstruction started. Itwas financiallyinteresting.”I asked Kraig to tell me about his remodelingprojects, since I have noticed many changes inK C’s Midway over the years. He responded, “The exterior was pretty run downand we put quite a bit of money into that. It hadbeen let go for some time and it is a ninety yearold building. We started with the exterior, addedawnings and improved the curb appeal. After oneof our tenants gave notice we then decided togo ahead and do our expansion in the back.”Kraig was able to do a lot of the work himselfand his attention to detail really shows.“We’ve always been really strong into the poolleagues and tournaments in terms of when weincorporated in 1992. We ran quite a few smalltournaments in Depoe Bay in our little two tablebar down there. We used to get thirty-two playersfor our tournaments. We got players comingfrom both directions. The business peaked inDepoe Bay and we both decided to move backto the Portland area that we were from. We founda place in Oregon City and Carol thought it wasa great idea. We eventually sold the place inDepoe Bay but for a while we were driving the110 miles there and back every other day forabout six weeks.”K C’s Midway is the most well known pool playingestablishment in Oregon City and I asked Kraigto tell me a little bit about how they progressed

to that point.“When we got this place here in ’96 we only hadthree tables and my wife started playing APA.We’d always had a real interest in promotingpool. I play now (since the winter session in ’98).We now have APA, BCA and ACS leagues. Wewere a natural draw for the players. We wererunning open tournaments at that time. Ourleagues started togrow and in the fallof ’99 we rented thespace adjacent tous. We added a 4th

table on the mainfloor and we added4 in that new area, which gave us 8tables. We thoughtwe’d be able to haveour league backthere and casualplay out front. Prettysoon the whole thingwas leagues, so wehad all 8 tablesgoing with leaguesevery night of theweek. So with theleagues and the

tournaments, we werelosing a lot of casualplay.”I asked Kraig if that iswhen he decided toexpand again - whenhe bought the buildingand what did he plan forit?“Well”, he said, “Whenwe purchased thebuilding there wasabout 4800 square feetjust warehouse space. So we decided afterour tenant gave notice, that it gave us anopportunity to add 2500square feet in the newoffice and newrestrooms and 2000square feet of spacefor tournaments. We

put in 6 Diamond pool tables and left the 8 Valleypool tables up front. Now we’re starting to seesome actual payback.”I mentioned that the special attraction of the backroom is that it is non-smoking.Kraig was quick to remark, “I have the buildingfor smokers and non-smokers alike. They allseem to like that.”

Page 19November 2006 www.onthebreaknews.com

There are more plans in the works for the new poolroom and Kraigelaborated, “We’ve got a few televisions to add and all the trophies won inleagues are going to be displayed here. We’ve been getting a goodresponse. The players love the atmosphere. It’s a little bit more quiet, thehigh ceilings and the way sound travels makes a really good atmospherefor a pool hall.”The room is set up so that a tournament desk sits up and looks out overall the tables. That’s an advantage to anybody running tournaments andrunning leagues. I asked Kraig if the Tri-Cups were held there.Enthusiastically he answered, “Yeah, Tri-Cups was great! This lastsession it seemed that everything worked well. Everything was laid outwell. We were packed with people everyday. The great thing is we havethe seating off to the sides so that the players in a tournament feel likethey have the floor all to themselves. You don’t have a crowd around youand you don’t have people coming by and bumping you. It works reallywell in there. I think the matches actually go a little faster, the tables arespread out enough that you don’t have to wait for a player on anothertable.”“What other plans do you have? You mentioned that you had even more

space to expand”, I asked.“We’ve got roughly 2000 square feet in the front of the building that is in arough warehouse space. We’re not quite sure what we’re going to dowith that. We’re pretty sure that we’re going to rent it out for the timebeing. You never know though with the future. We’re going to actuallystart back on the front half of the bar now which is well worn after the lastcouple remodels. Paint, freshen it up, rearrange it a little bit. Redo all thebathrooms,” was Kraig’s response.“What about food and drinks? Can you get that back in the poolroom?”, Iinquired.“No problem at all. Our wait staff serves the back room and they arededicated just to that. We offer daily food specials for breakfast, lunchand dinner. We have happy hour of course 3-6 pm Monday throughSaturday and 9 pm to Midnight on Sunday. We are open from 10 am – 2am Monday through Friday and 9 am – 2 am Saturday and Sunday.”Kraig and Carol and their staff invite everyone to stop in, say hello andshoot some pool in their newly opened poolroom. You will enjoy playing

on the Diamond pool tables in their non-smoking atmosphere. K C’sMidway Bar & Grill is located at 1003 Seventh St in Oregon City, OR 503-656-9501.I was very impressed with their poolroom and look forward to what newprojects they will take on.

Damien Overton

By Tom Suarez Hard Times tournament director

The Fall season for pool in Sacramento started with a 32 player field ofOne Pocket players. All the usual northernCalifornia players took the ‘First of theMonth’ Jamboree as the kickoff for the fall/winter season for pool tournaments. The One Pocket tournament started at1pm on Saturday Oct 7th with a great fieldof 32 players. The double elimination race to two on bothsides started with some strong playerslosing their first match and taking the longroad to the cash.Robert Aldana bested Billy Palmer in theirfirst match making it a very long day forMr. Palmer. But, Billy took it all in stride and won therest of his matches to face Trevor Smithin the finals.Trevor Smith went undefeated to reachthe finals. Because of the very late hour, and a huge waiting list for the‘retail’ players wanting tables. Billy and Trevor decided to ‘split’ first andsecond prize money. The First of the Month 9 Ball event included 46 players paying the $25

entry fee and Hard Times kicking in $460 added for a total prize fund of$1610.The new guy in town, Damien Overton, when through the winners bracketundefeated and was looking like a lock fortaking down the 1st place prize of $440.Pat McLeod had other plans. In the ‘hotseat’ match Pat made Damien work forthe victory. The match went hill-hill withDamien winning the toughest match he’dplayed all day.Pat went to the one loss side and tookout young Austin Murphy, who had justdefeated fellow IPT member BobbyHunter. Pat and Austin ended up going hill-hill with Pat winning.Pat McLeod was not playing in the finalsagainst Damien Overton. The true doubleelimination called for Mr. McLeod to defeat

Mr. Overton twice for 1st place. Pat won the first match hill-hill (his third‘hill-hill match in a row) and now had to overcome Damien’s 3 game leadin the 2nd match. Pat fought back to tie the match up and lock into his 4th

hill-hill match. Mr. Overton got the rolls in the last game and took 1st.

Byrne comes toMedford Oregon!

By Stephanie Karpins

I had the great honor of sitting down and talking with Mr. Robert Byrne, and I have to say he was one of the best people I have had the chance totalk to in along time.We talked mostly ofstories about him; whohe’s seen play;tournaments he’splayed and won; hisviews about the game;and where he thinksthe game is or whereit’s going in the future. This trip to Medford,Oregon was not hisfirst. He traveled here 15 years ago to play in this same event. He said heliked the Medford Elk’s billiard Tournament, and it was a shame that stateor local newspapers around here don’t cover this very famous nationalevent. Byrne’s stated he was amazed on how complex it was for being aweek long event and how many games needed to be played to completethe whole entire tournament. He also said, if travel expenses weren’t socostly for him coming from Iowa, He’d probably come here more often.Robert was born and raised in Dubuque, Iowa. Lived in San Francisco,Ca for 40 years, and then return to Dubuque in 1996. He first became amagazine editor and an author of several novels before he began writingbooks about the game of billiards and that’s only because his publisherasked him if he was able to write about billiards since he played the gameof billiards. And in 1978, Byrne wrote, “Byrnes Standard Book of Pool andBilliards”, and sold over 400,000 copies worldwide.Since then Byrne has written hundreds of instructional magazine articles, additional billiard instructional books, went to Burbank and Hollywood, CAto shoot six videotapes, received the Industry Service Award by the Billiardand Bowling Institute of America in 1994 on Hilton Head Island in SouthCarolina (an honor previously awarded Willie Mosconi, Paul Newman, and Jackie Gleason), and was inducted into the BCA’s Hall of Fame onJuly 21, 2001 at the annual world billiard trade show at the Las VegasHilton. As a player, he finished third in the National Professional Three-CushionChampionships in 1977 held in North Hollywood, Ca, and won The NationalAmateur Billiard Tournament in Pan Dennis, KY and The National SeniorBilliard Tournament in Chicago, IL in 1999.As we sat, he told me about how he missed the old style pool halls, whenlarge amounts of people would gather to watch and of course bet onmatches being played. He told me about his thoughts about the popularityof billiards on the whole. Throughout the years, billiards has risen andfallen in numbers of people playing, and it’s mainly because of the lowtournament winnings in general. Look at why every other sport that iswatched on TV is popular, everyone who is playing, is earning or winninglarge amounts of money and becoming millionaires almost overnight. The game bowling (a great game all on its own) is ranked one higher thanbilliards because of the amount of money that is being won.Although the latest billiard event of Reyes winning a half a million dollarsby beating Siegal in the IPT King Of The Hill event didn’t get recognizedby any of the general national news, I think that the IPT Tour has a goodstart on making the great long climb of making billiards close or as popularas it was many years ago, but it may take other billiard organizations tofollow suit to the IPT Tour to increase the odds. If you want to learn or findout more about Byrne visit his site at www.byrne.org.

The 2006 ESPN ZONE BILLIARDS SHOOTOUT was held October4-5 in Las Vegas. Luc Salvas defeated Dave Pearson for the

INTERNATIONAL SPEED POOL CHALLENGE crown and Mike Masseybested Tom Rossman for the TRICK SHOT MAGIC title.

ESPN Zone Las Vegas was host to two international fields, with a$50,000 total purse in each event. INTERNATIONAL SPEED POOLCHALLENGE and TRICK SHOT MAGIC were both taped for three 1-hourtelecasts on ESPN beginning in November.

INTERNATIONAL SPEED POOL CHALLENGE was the firsttournament, played on October 4, and drew an international lineup battlingfor the $50,000 winner-take-all prize. The action in Speed Pool is fast andfurious (the speed of light compared to 9-ball) with two sets, twelve racksin each set, the first set Straight Pool and the second set 8-Ball. Playersroutinely run racks of fifteen balls in about 1-minute and the player withthe lowest accumulated time for twelve racks wins the match.

Salvas of Canada and Pearson of England emerged from thepack as the top guns. In the Championship Match, Salvas overcamePearson by scores of 6:37 / 7:30 minutes the first set 8:01 / 8:20 minutesthe second set to capture the title and $50,000. In semifinal action, Salvaszipped past Jeanette Lee (USA) 7:55 / 9:13 in the first set and 8:20 /12:18 in the second set. The other semifinal saw Pearson zap JasonKane (England) in straight sets 7:18 / 7:48 and 8:45 / 10:47. Salvasdisplayed blinding speed to defeat Pearson who holds several SpeedPool records in the Guinness Book of World Records. Even then, it wentto the last rack of the second set to decide the Championship Match.

The Seventh Annual TRICK SHOT MAGIC, which was played onOctober 5, also featured a stellar international cast vying for $30,000 firstprize in the $50,000 event. The matches required each player to execute2 Skill shots and 8 Artistic shots in a challenge format. Players challengedtheir opponents with shots of their choice, with each player forced tomake the shot to score a point. The players alternated back and forthwith a possible twenty challenge shots, and the player with the highestoverall points won the match.

Massey and Rossman displayed their brilliance to emerge as thetop trick shot artists. The Championship Match was poetry on green felt, with Massey defeating Rossman by a razor-thin score of 12-11 to takethe crown and $30,000. Rossman, who otherwise played to top form inthe event, claimed $8,000 second prize. In semifinal action, Rossman prevailed over Luke Szywala of Poland bya score of 11-7. The other semifinal saw Massey slip past Bruce

International Trick Shot stars who were eliminatedin the quarterfinals included Stefano Pelinga (Italy), the defending 2005champion, Andy Segal (USA), Nick Nikolaidis (Canada), and CharlesDarling (USA). The four quarterfinalists won $1,500 each.

The standing-room-only crowd gave Salvas and Massey a rousingovation at the conclusion of the final matches. The winners checks werepresented by ESPN Zone and Olhausen Billiards, and Viking Cuespresented a one-of-a-kind cue to each of the champions. Thepresentations brought another round of cheers from the audience.

In addition to the fine tournament site at ESPN Zone at the NewYork New York Hotel & Casino, the event was sponsored by OlhausenBilliards, Viking Cues, Aramith Super Pro Balls, Simonis Cloth, TheAssociation for P.O.O.L., Original Italian Slate, Liguria International, Mueller

Jay “Jump Shot” Leviassubmitted his licenseplate “JMPSHOT” whichis on his 2005 Yukon XLDenali

Here is my license plate submission for the photo of the month. It standsfor “Jump Shot” which happens to be my nickname because it’s my favoriteshot and one that I practice the most and use frequently. I was given thenickname after jumping an opponents ball to perform a long bank on the8 ball in a match. I picked up my 2005 Yukon XL Denali in May of 2005and ordered the new plates just days later.I played basketball in school and it doesn’t hurt that I am 6’7” tall so Ihave many people assume that my license plate is related to basketball. They often have a confused look when I tell them that it has to do withpool.

TACOMA, WACity Lights held its second B and Below 8-Ball tournament October 21st and 22nd. The field consistedof (6) women and (52) men for a 58 player matchup. The tournament was set with races to (5) on both sides, evening up the field with a twist of 8-Ball.The eventual winner, Junior Tolentino ran through the winners side to make it to the point, his onlyclose match was (5-4) close win over 9th place finisher Pete Semoe.Meeting Junior at the point was local favorite Jim Boyce, with strong wins over Ronnie Wayland(5-2), Tony Costanzo (5-1) and Sean Gray (5-3). The match point was a show leaving Juniorwaiting with a win (5-3).The losers side was dominated by Dannie Stewart who after losing to Junior (5-3), came off 7th

incorporate it into your pattern planning. Thisis most important when you need to get aprecise line on a ball, either because it hasrestricted access as in the two examples shown,or because you need a certain angle from thatball break a cluster or go on the following ball ofthe run. For example, if you are faced with theupper shot with ball in hand, the position shownand Path B may be your most likely way to runout. Try it a few times, and then try alternatives.Which is easiest for you?

Crossing The Line(continued from page 8)

tables swayed back and forth when bumped oneither end so a leg spreader was added and aretro fit kit was sent out to stiffen the table sothe sag could be removed from the slate. Thekit consisted of 2 ea 2 x 8 with U channels onboth sides 2ea U channels to affix to the endframes and 1ea 2 x 4 to fit the long way on thetable and dimensions to cut the old cross beamsto fit the long way in the table. Dad and I put alot of these in tables that were in the field. Thefirst of these tables were sub titled C1’s and theAnniversary legs were painted white along withthe corner castings. There was no casting forthe side pocket, but a dowel inserted to keepthem lined up. The pocket was inserted into thesemi circle cut in the rail. The Aprons werescrewed on and there was no way to drill intothe rail to line them up, so you had installerswith huge forearms from driving these screwsinto the hard wood and the screws would notkeep the aprons tight. The first time the floorbuffer hit the leg the leg crunched. The castingswere very hard to line up for it took two screwsand a bolt to hold them in place and no way toinsure the openings would be consistent, so theysent out a block to insert in each pocket. As thetables were recovered time after time all thescrew holes wore out. Something had to bedone.Complaints came from all over the US and theengineers went back to the drawing board. By1948 the DC model was introduced. A legspreader was added; The casting was added tothe side pocket; an aluminum band was put onthe Anniversary, the figure 8 nut plate was addedso the aprons could be bolted instead ofscrewed; the legs on the Sportsman weretapered and the color change to beige andburgundy and the name to Sport King DC. Whenthe boys came home they didn’t head to thepoolroom but to the Altar and got married andraised kids and got jobs so the sale of tablesslowed down. Rents in the areas where thepoolrooms thrived went up and the pool tablescame down. Things looked glum for Brunswick. The bowling and billiard business had come toa stand still. There were only so many kids youcould have set pins and they could beundependable Its time to automate but TheBrunswick Balke Collender Co. procrastinatedtoo long and American Machine and Foundrycame up with the first automatic pin spotter andbowling center could be seen going up all overthe US. All Brunswick’s efforts went intodeveloping there own pin spotter and it

happened. The sale of pool tables would go intothese new deluxe Centers like Grand CentralBowl, Amato’s and Crosley Bowl in our area.New poolrooms were starting up. The Cue Ballin Salem opened and things were looking brightin the student union facilities all over the country;however in the late fifty’s things looked glum forbilliards at Brunswick. Again there was a slowdown in Bowling and people had turned awayfrom Brunswick for their cloth, supplies andtables. In 1959 Dad decided it was time to headback to Chicago to discuss the future of billiardswith the Vice president of bowling and billiardsJack Thomas.Mr. Thomas was very pleasant and gave us anhour of his time; however, his tone was verydisappointing. A Billiards is dead and we areplanning to drop it from our products@, was hisanswer to us. Dad told him that we had the bestyear by far and were looking for a hefty increasein the future. Jack asked just how much we haddone with the company and Dad showed himthat we had purchased over $75,000.00 in clothand supplies and had been responsible for thesale of nearly 100 tables in our area. We onlyreceived a $50.00 lead fee and got theinstallation which accounted to another $50.00.Jack called his secretary to bring in the billiardsales for the past year for the World. After goingover the totals he looked Dad in the eye andinformed us that we had accounted for 25% oftheir sales for that year. Since the population ofthe Pacific Northwest was so small comparedto the world he felt that we must be doingsomething right. That hour stretched out intodiscussions of just what was going on.Dad switched the conversation to the successwe had by booking Willie Mosconi in our areaand his involvement in the upcoming movie “TheHustler”. That touched a sensitive nerve for thepowers with the company felt that “The Hustler”would destroy what the company had been doingin creating the image of pool as a family game, but he would discuss holding off on closing thebilliard division for a year. We left Chicago withan expanded franchise and we would install allthe tables that were sold in Oregon, Washington,Idaho and Northern California. How wrong the Company was about “TheHustler”. As soon as the movie was releasedthe company was backordered 90 days, but anew table was in the works that could be mass-produced and eliminate all the hand work thatwent into the old line of tables.Next month the Gold crown.
