On The Cover:Ron Schippert, the 39 year old owner of an apparel store from LasVegas took home top honors in the Blue Tier of the APA 8-BallChampionships. Ron qualified by winning a regional competition lastOctober in Huntington Beach, CA.“I was lucky to play in a league with good players that taught me a fewthings,” he said. Ron can be seen playing once a week at the LasVegas Cue Club. Playing mostly to socialize, Ron realized, “You haveto stay focused because there’s a lot of distractions. You can’t letthem bother you. The most important thing I learned is that, it’s notover until it’s over.”Shooting with a cataract in his left eye, Ron can’t see very well whenshooting long shots. “My depth perception is all screwed up,” hecommented. Ron says he is proof that if he can win anybody can win.

Shotze’s in Everett completed its 5th in-house 9-ball league with the singlestournament on May 6th and 7th. The league was changed back to (3)member teams but to accommodate all the players, (2) 8-boot tableswere added so there was room for all (14) teams. This league has grownin leaps and bounds. We are trying to find ways to enlarge this league

and add even more members, but that is to be seen in the future. Thisseason was a record breaking one. When all was said and done theleague paid out over $8,000. As usual there were the pay outs for individualwins, top ten percentages, and top (2) women, 9-ball breaks during theregular play, a 9-ball pot, and then the famous singles tournament in whicha cool $4,578 was paid out. The most important thing about the singlestournament is that every member that participates is paid money. Thereare so many ways that a member can win money in this league it isalmost unbelievable.Another great thing about this league is that we have a great arrangementof different talent. There are a couple A and a few B players and thenplenty of C players. But these are league players, not those A+ and superA’s that play on the road and play the majority of the time for money only. This gives the C players the opportunity to pit themselves against a higherranked player for experience and yet not feel completely out classed. Italso gives a change for anyone having a good weekend to finish high orto even win the tournament. Every one of our playoffs has been won bydifferent members and this season wasn’t any different.Ed Slade went undefeated in the playoffs. His matches were ConcordeRapanan (7-0), Bill Irons (7-6), Dino Lyons (7-3), Edward Cauley (7-0),Bob Brandt (7-4), Mike Siplivy (7-1) and then Mike Siplivy again in thefinals (9-1). Ed was shooting lights out for the entire tournament.Mike Siplivy joined the league for the first time this season. His matcheswere Carol Mellors (7-2), Manny Fernandez (7-5), Randy Martin (7-2),Treon Pham (7-1), Ed Slade (1-7), Sambo Hoff (6-5) and the finals againstEd Slade (9-1).Shotze’s, Ford and I want to congratulate both players on a fantastictournament. We would also like to congratulate Lorraine Krom and Bernie Foster forbeing the top (2) women of the season. Lorraine also made history bybeing the first woman to finish with over 50 percent for the entire season.Lorraine finished with 52%.The payout for this playoff went as follows:1st $518 Ed Slade2nd $380 Mike Siplivy3rd $300 Sambo Hoff4th $240 Bob Brandt5/6 $190 Treon Pham, Scott Chandler7/8 $150 Edward Cauley, Randy Martin9-12 $120 Jeff Jimenez, Ron Graves, Don McMillan, Phil Wilson13-16 $95 Brad Hornshaw, Marvin Holmes, Bill Byers, Alan Buck17-24 $80 Jerry Lawson, Jim Shoemaker, Lyman Moss,

From September to April many women in the Longview-Kelso, WA areaspend their Tuesday nights playing 8 ball in the local bars and taverns.Twelve teams played this past year and the battle was very competitive. On April 28th, nine of the twelve teams went into the play offs. In thisdouble elimination format with modified BCA rules, it was a race to 7.Everyone had a lot of fun playing Friday night and all day Saturday, evenwith the intense games during the matches. By Sunday, April 30, theelimination results had the Last Chance Tavern team pitted against theCross Key’s Pub team to see who’d go on to play in the finals. With a 6 -6 score the Cross Key’s team grabbed the victory game and went on toplay the undefeated Team 2 from the Ol’ Tima Tavern. The score stayedpretty tight through the first part of the match, but in the end, the Ol’ Tima2 team edged ahead and went on to win 7 - 4.The players would like to express our appreciation to our sponsoringestablishments and our league officers, Gale Ahrens - President and LedaChandler - Secretary/Treasurer for their efforts in making this one of thebest years ever for the Lower Columbia Women’s Pool League.1st Ol’ Tima 2: Malynne Myers - Captain,

Here is another great Artistic Pool Shot / Challenge. This shot is from thedraw discipline and has a Degree of Difficalty (DODof 7.Object ball letters coincide with corresponding pocket letters. To set thisshot up position F ball per grid one diamond segment off of the foot cushionand one diamond segment off of the #4, (long rail),cushion. The A ball iscentered between the pocket points. The cue ball is in hand, ON THEFOOT STRING, behind line X.The objective of this shot is to shoot the cue ball to F ball and draw backto A ball. You must make both object balls as pocket letter designated. The cue ball may contact an extra cushion before making A ball. A scratchis also allowed. Here are some helpful hints on executing this shot. Don’t raise the butt ofyour cue to get draw. Keep your cue as level to the plane of the table aspossible, i.e. lower your bridge hand. Pay close attention to how low youare cueing the cue ball by getting the tip extremly close to the cue ball.Don’t use excessive power. Make sure your warm-up strokes are smoothand don’t forget to follow through on your execution stroke.

A large part of learning how to play well involvespushing back your frontiers. You are comfortablein parts of your game but there are parts that mightterrify you, such as drawing the cue ball more thanthree feet or 80-degree cuts on the game ball.Practice should help to take the terror out of those“terra incognito” regions.Power shots are one area to work on, but thismonth let’s try the other side — soft shots withprecise control of speed. These are most usefulwhen playing safeties and just rolling a ball into apocket.I got this drill from Tom Riccobene of New Mexico, who has just completed his training as anAdvanced Instructor in the BCA’s InstructorTraining Program. I didn’t do very well at first, butit’s fun and attention grabbing.

The idea is to shoot a series of balls from the head string and make eachone travel a little farther than the one before. The cue ball is not involved— just hit each object ball with your cue stick. In the diagram are thebeginning and ending positions for a typical attempt with 8 balls. Thingswent OK until ball 7 which didn’t get past the six.The first technique to work on is visualizing where the ball should go andthen putting it there. Pick a precise spot on the table. With a ball alreadyout there, pick a certain distance past that ball. For the first balls, I try toput the next ball exactly one ball beyond the previous. For the balls fartherout, that’s too much precision for me, so I try for a half-diamond past theprevious ball. You will probably need to shorten your bridge. There are lots of reasonsto use a shorter bridge on this kind of shot. A 4-inch bridge is not to shortfor the first shots. Really. Try it.As you get better at controlling your soft speed, add more balls to the linewith the ultimate goal of shooting all 16 balls. I’ve done all 16 once, and

the key was leaving the first 10 balls between the line and the side pockets. That left more room and chance for error on the last 6.When you have made good progress on this drill, and I think you will see

progress within 10 minutes of practice, try the drill in the other direction:Shoot the first ball as far down the table as you can without hitting the farcushion, then shoot the next one so it doesn’t quite reach the first, and soon.Do you have a favorite, fun drill? Send it in to my email address, and Imay write it up in a future column.

Just Shut up and Take it“The worse thing you can do when a match is handed to you is hand itback,” said Robert Rodriguez, Master level player and good friend fromDenver. This profound statement was made after a recent winning matchwhere I could do no wrong. I’m currently writing from Las Vegas, Nevadawhere the 2006 BCA National events just wrapped up. This story was

inspired by my first match of thesingles event. It’s a race to seven and I’m playing avery tough competitor. She’s playedin numerous pro events and I knowshe’s a strong player. In fact, Iaccidentally saw on the board that Iwas playing her and intentionally didn’ttell anyone because I just didn’t wantto hear their reactions when I said hername. Immediately, I could tell thatthings were going my way. I missed acouple balls early on that didn’t leaveher with a shot. A couple breakoutsshe went for left her snookered. Shewas clearing her balls and leaving me

an open table in most racks. In a race to seven, she won one game. After the match, I was excited about the win, but had a hard time feelingI like I deserved it. As silly as it may seem, I knew that I was very fortunateto get a chance in many of those seven racks. It was then that Robertpointed out to me that though I had the opportunities that I did, I still neededto get out. Even if someone “hands you a game” you still need to take it.Just shut up and take it. (Those were my words, not his.)You can’t lose sight of your objective; which is, once you enter thattournament arena and assemble your cue, you’re playing your best andplaying to win. If you’re playing to have a drink and some fun or to meetnew friends, then don’t bother entering the tournament. This is not thetime and place for that. May that reminder keep you focused enough todo what you came here to do. Who cares how you do it, just do it.Another insightful reminder came from Tom Ross, friend and writer forBilliards Digest (and a million other publications). “That’s okay,” he said, when I told him I felt like she handed me the match. “It’s okay to win amatch that way as long as you are realistic about it. Be honest withyourself but accept that you still played well to win.” Robert’s right. Theworse thing I could’ve done would be to hand the match back over to her.So, the next time you feel the table going your way. Accept it. Take whatyou get; good or bad of course. Its okay to acknowledge you got a luckyroll or two, but make sure you take advantage of it. Instead of feelingsorry for your opponent, punish them for not finishing the rack. Just takethat game away from them. Run out those balls. You deserve it.Samm Diep - House Pro at Table Steaks East in Aurora, ColoradoSammsPocket.com – blog.SammsPocket.comfun & unique products for pool playersCongratulations to:

Editors Note: Excerpts reprinted with permission of the author, Robert Byrne.

In a strict technical sense, every shot is a massé shot unless the cue isexactly level and hit’s the cueball precisely on the vertical axis without atrace of sidespin. If the cueball path curves even slightly because ofsidespin and a downward hit, it is a massé shot. The big massés thatmake the cueball travel in weird, lookpin paths are best left to exhibitionplayers. Executing those eye-popping showstoppers requires a short stiff, heavy cue, coaching from an expert, and a table of practice them on.Little massés on the other hand, don’t require a special cue or an explosivestroke. When opportunities for them come up, the great majority of playerspass them by. Either they don’t see them, or they think they are too hard.Little massés, the kind that are worth trying in games, aren’t easy, butwith a bit of knowledge and practice, they are no harder than, say, an off-angle bank. Massés should be considered in games when the cueball iswithin an inch or two of the object ball; at greater distances controlling thecurve is usually too hard. It also helps if the final target is large - a ball inthe jaws, for example, or a safety zone behind a group of balls.A geometric method of aiming massé shots was worked out in 1835 byphysicist Gaspard-Gustave Coriolis and then forgotten for a century anda half. It was demonstrated on Byrne’s Standard Video of Pool, VolumeII and explained in detail in Byrne’s Advanced Technique in Pool andBilliards (1990). To save you the trouble of running to your bookshelf forthe book or tape, here is a condensed description:The geometry of massé shots:

The circle in this diagram is thecueball as viewed fromdirectly overhead. Point A iswhere the cueball rests on thecloth. Assume that AC is thedirection you want the cueballto take initially and DE is thedesired final direction.Because you want the cueballto curve to the right, you mustuse right English. Start with thecue level, aiming as shown bythe solid arrow labeled “Aiming

line”, which is parallel to AC. Raise the cue to about 67 degrees and aimthrough the cueball at a point on the cloth, B, so that AB is parallel to DE.It’s up to you to bring the cue down on the cueball at the correct speed, for the harder you hit it, the farther out it will go before it curves. While it is not necessary to understand the physics behind this aimingmethod - almost all top players rely on simple judgment based on practiceand most have never heard or Coriolis - I find keeping the geometry inmind very helpful for the relatively soft massés in this section.

My Best Pool Day Everby: Dale E. Caldwell

I remember the day that I just couldn’t missHow I made every bank shot, angle and kiss

Every ball rolled exactly the distance it neededEvery shot that I played somehow succeeded

And it wasn’t long before everyone noticedI was playing beyond my typical novice

So a player approached, I mean a real playerOne everyone feared who happened to be there

He told me my game was looking real fineBut wondered if it would with cash on the line

I couldn’t back down I was shooting too wellBesides, if I beat him, the stories I’d tell

I knew I could do it this day was so rareA crowd gathered around smelling cash in the air

We wagered some cecils the race was to sevenAnd I played like God with divine intervention

My opponent was fried at seven to threeI was truly elated all eyes were on me

But just as I started to reach for the moneyA voice in the back said “I need your help honey!”

Startled and groggy I awoke from this fableMy best pool is played when I’m not at the table.

EXPO IN LAS VEGAS - JUNE 2007BCA Board responds quickly to the membership

COLORADO SPRINGS, COLORADO: The Billiard Congress of Americahas reset the dates of the International Billiard & Home Recreation Expo. The 2007 event will be held June 21-23 at The Sands Expo Center in LasVegas.Feedback from the recently concluded 2006 Expo, held last month inHouston, indicated that a majority of BCA members — both exhibitorsand non-exhibitors — preferred Las Vegas as a location for the show andthat the show be held at a later date.“In our first meeting after the Expo, we felt it necessary to determine thecause for the light turnout in Houston,” stated Trade Show CommitteeChairman Ivan Lee, “Once we had an indication that the major issueswere the location and the date, we had a clear path to follow.”The unanimous action by the BCA Board moves the 2007 Expo to theJune date and maintains the previously scheduled location at The SandsExpo Center. “We listened to our members and felt that this was the bestmove for the entire industry” stated BCA Board President Gregg Hovey.“Combined with a return to Las Vegas next year, we expect this shift toproduce a very well-attended trade show.”

Going to the trade show for the BCA isalways a special treat for me and the Aprilshow in Houston Tex. was even moreexciting than ever. Old friends to see and newones to meet. We were going to set up aGold crown style for Gorina Cloth and help

them staff their booth. It is always a pleasure to see my good friend CarlosGorina when he comes over from Spain, and finally had a chance to

meet Jon Spiegeland John Abbey forwe spend a lot oftime on the phone, but that is the greatpart of the tradeshow, getting to seeface to face thevoice you know. There was a lot ofexcitement at theirbooth. Because oftheir long tradition ofproducing finewoolen cloth theywere chosen to

provide the cloth for the IPT tour this year. The International Pool Tour willbe using the wool cloth for all the final events and will leave it to thequalifying event sponsor to choose the new wool or Gorina’s excellentworsted. The first trade show I attended was at the Jack Tar Hotel in SanFrancisco 1965. It was held by theBowling and Billiard Institute ofAmerica BBIA. There were 4exhibitors displaying on 3’x6'dining tables. A couple of bowlingshoes here some pool balls there,no pool tables, cues oraccessories. About 25 attendeeswho remained friends all mybusiness life. Since I was in myearly twenties I have out livedmost of them. Lou Wermers fromFischer tables, Maurice Blatt, ArtSchmidt and the whole gangincluding Frank Lanza are allgone. Fred Mali and I continue on. Fred Mali still looks the sameand the two of us posed at hisbooth. We shared old memoriesand he filled me in on what wasnew or old in the material that makes the game what it is. Fred knows thecloth and cue part of the business better than any one I know. His booth

was always busy and he was there from open to close. It was great to see Ledeen Hangen from RC Designs. She is nowrunning the company for Raul Rubalacava her father and took a lot oftime for an interview to explain how they had solved the problems wemanufacturers and installers have been having with imported pockets. She was showing a new convertible pool dining table. RC Designs isalways on the cutting edge of fashion and design in this industry. I met an old friend from the Italian slate industry who is nowrepresenting a Brazilian slate producer. I was most impressed withDomus Slate finishing technique and the company’s investment in theItalian machinery and methods to produce the finest slate beds I haveseen since the quarries ran out in Vermont. I got out my 30 powerGeoscope that I use to examine billiard cloth and got a close up view ofthe surface. None of the grind marks I am used to seeing and had thegold flecks that the Vermont slate had and no carbon streaks. Not to be prejudiced about Gorina I spent a great deal of time withthe folks at the Simonis booth visiting with another phone pal, Felice Enrightand Chris Hayes. Both of them are “drop dead gorgeous “ so I was notdisappointed when I saw them in person. Even though Carlos Gorina is agood friend I still buy a great deal of cloth from Simonis and am neverdisappointed. I had a chance to meet Mark Simonis from the plant inBelgium and gota real educationon “ why worsted“. Ivan Lee thedirector or the USoperations was areal treat to meet.He really knowsthe industry andthe product hehandles. Myspecial thanks tomy special” Angel”, Angel Cruze who is the guy we all count on to get thecloth, for he is in charge of the warehouse and shipping. Cheese wasn’table to make the show so I was to cover the event. Paddo’s camera wasin his car in Portland and Angel loaned us his camera so you readerscan share the pix. Brunswick was the star of the show with their immense boothshowing their new tables and game room furniture. Ewa was there toshow off the new Marquett table which was snatched out of the pages ofhistory and brought to Houston, It was always my favorite along with hersisters the Rochester and Phfister. Their furniture design people did acomplete game room to go with it. I was lucky enough to gain an interviewwith Sean Cummings the new president of Brunswick Billiards. I will betalking about Sean and the new Brunswick in future articles. for I think

The BCA Pool Leaguehosted their National 8-BallAmateur Championshipfrom May 12 through May20 at the Riviera Hotel &Casino in Las Vegas. Morethan 7,000 league playersfrom around the worldattended to vie for the$700,000 in prize moneyand the championshiptitles in many differentdivisions. Teams andindividuals traveled fromsuch lands as the islandnation of Tonga, Portugal, and England and manydisplayed talents thatprove the skills of pool arenow universal. The competitions in Las Vegas are broken up into Singles, Scotch Doubles, and Teams. The first competitions to take place are those of ScotchDoubles and Singles. One of the most crowded tables in the room in theearly goings was the Speed Pool Championship. Players raced aroundthe Diamond Smart Tables and fired balls in without warm-up strokes totry and pocket fifteen balls in as little time as possible. Scott Tollefson ofErie, PA managed this task in only 48.65 seconds. The Men’s Super Seniors event found a champion in Ellahue O’Rearfrom Little Rock, Arkansas. Mr. O’Rear had to vanquish the efforts ofDon Harp of Riverside, California in order to reach his goal. Their youngercohorts in the Seniors Division wound down with a contest betweenHorace Aughtry of Redding, Pennsylvania and William Hyde of Austin,Texas. Mr. Aughtry took home first place while Mr. Hyde now owns thesecond spot. The Women’s Senior Single Champion is Coleen John, who won seven of her eight matches while runner-up Eva Hill won four ofher six match-ups.Men and women compete according to their skill level in no-handicapcompetition at the BCA Nationals. For instance, players who have high-

place finishes in the Opendivision are moved up tothe Masters. Our Men’schampion in the Master’sSingles competition thisyear is Michael Hill, whomoved undefeated throughthe field to earn $5,600.Second-place finisher KarlBoyes found victory sevenout of nine times at bat andtook home $4,200 for hisefforts. The Women’sMaster champion this yearis Rebecca Wagner whofought a real battle againstAmy Latzko to take hercrown and her $4,000.Above even the Mastersdivision stands the Grand

Masters. Anyone not playing in the professional event (the EnjoyPool.comOpen) that runs side-by-side with the amateur event may qualify to playin this strong field. Darren Appleton made the voyage from Australia toplay here and it paid off for him as he earned $3,750 with his defeat ofMichigan native Jason Kirkwood. Tammie Jones of Indiana was unbeatenin her Grand Master Division win worth $2,750 while Pamela Patton wasnearly as good for second place. The Open Divisions are the ones withthe most crowded fields. Playerswho will later in the week competeon Teams come out early to competein the Singles. It not only gives thema shot at individual glory, it alsowarms them up for team competitionand allows them to become familiarwith the Diamond Smart Tables.Derek Cumm only had to drive fromArizona to win $8,000 and the Men’sOpen division. He won all eight of hiscontests and his unblemished recordbettered the mark of runner-up JustinBergman. On the Women’s side of the chartsLauren Ward, who has been playingleagues for more than twenty years, was perfect in her attempt with seven wins out of seven matches. Her$4,600 victory left Caroline Pao of New York City in second place withten wins in twelve attempts. In the Player Member Singles division Joy Helton passed Jennifer Passto gather her $2,800 and Tommy D’Alfonso bested 262 other players toclaim $5,000 in his victory in the Men’s Player Member Division with afinal win over Andrew Breen.Scotch Doubles is one of the favorite divisions among the spectators. These tables are hard to reach due to the sea of fans surrounding them.Broken into divisions again to reflect relative skill levels, this year ourMaster Team winners were theteam of well-known Chicago proplayer Ike Runnels and his partnerAmy Latzko. They took home$2,900 for their win over TaraMcCracken and Gordy Vanderveerof Dallas, Texas. In the OpenDivision more players means alarger purse so Carolyn Pao of NewYork City and her partner, WilliamReuben earned a cool $3,600 fortheir win in that division. The end of the week in Vegasbrings closure to the most popularof all of the events, the Teams. These teams play togetherthroughout the year and part of thedrama here is in deciding the line-ups as many teams carry more than the five-man playing limit. Our newMen’s Master Team champions are the Young Guns of St. Louis, MO.Their week of battle brought them $6,900 and a great win over second-place team Team Manston of England. The Women’s Masters Divisionwas captured by Greenfield’s Slightly Competitive from Denver. CaptainSamm Diep divided up the $5,950 they earned with their win over theCalifornia Cue T’s from San Francisco.

The Las Vegas Cue Club hosted one of the five IPT Qualifiers held overthe Memorial Day weekend. Seventeen top pool players showed up to dobattle for the two entry spots being offered into the IPT’s North American8-Ball Open Championships to be held at The Venetian in Las Vegas. The list of players for this event was impressive. The players who wontheir entry into the North American 8-Ball Open were Mark Tademy andDavid Matlock.Entry into IPT Qualification Tournaments is $1,000, with the option toenter for a $500 fee. Entry fees must be paid in advance. There is verylimited space at each event so entries are based on a first-come, first-served basis. On line registration is the only way to enter these eventsand the form is on the IPT web site www.internationalpooltour.com.

Absolutely no entrieswill be allowed at anytournament; no moneywill be accepted at theevents. Each tournament is bea Double-Eliminationcompetition with racesto ten.The first and secondplace competitors willsecure spots in the2006 IPT NorthAmerican 8-Ball OpenChampionship on July22-30, 2006 at theVenetian Hotel in LasVegas, Nevada. bonus, the third throughsixth place contestantswho paid the $1,000entry fee in eachqualifying tournamentwill earn a free entryinto another qualifyingtournament of theirchoice! Players payingthe $1,000 entry fee willalso earn pointsc u m u l a t i v e l ythroughout thetournaments they playin, based on their prizeearnings. If a player isranked in the top 100 onthe “money list” at theend of the 2006 season, he/she will qualify to earn a 2007 Tour Cardwithout having to compete in the 2007 Qualification Tournament!Players may pay an entry fee of only $500 into the qualificationtournaments. With this option, if the player advances as one of the toptwo players at the qualifying tournament, securing a spot in the respectiveIPT Tournament, he/she will be eligible for only half of the full prize payouthe/she has earned. Players who pay the $500 entry fee and place thirdthrough sixth in any qualification tournament will not earn a free entry intoanother qualification tournament. In addition, the players who choose topay the $500 entry fee will not accumulate any points toward the “moneylist,” regardless of the player’s IPT prize earnings for 2006. Therefore, even if the player comes in as one of the top 100 prize earners, he/shewill still have to place in the top 50 in the 2007 Qualification Tournament toearn a 2007 Tour Card.

Challenge MatchesFour players who had been eliminated from the tournamnet playedagainst pool legend and IPT Pro John Kutcher. F.Y.I. Pool is losing players to online poker sites. (Source: Billiard media2004-2006)Pool players love action. In it’s first week, 9ballpoker.com averaged 550unique visitors a day.“We are very pleased with player response to 9ballpoker.com and theseresults tell us that there is a valid demand for a poker site where part ofthe profits are added to pool tournament prize funds,” says MagicMarketing Group’s Mark Griffin. That’s right, the same Mark Griffin whohas successful ties to pool through the BCA Pool League and DiamondBilliard Products.Griffin continues, “There are so many pool players out there who justlove action. They are playing on poker sites that have no interest in pool,or pool players. These sites just host, take fees, and give nothing inreturn. That’s where 9ballpoker.com comes alive. Every hand you playracks up cash for pool.”9ballpoker.com uses the most robust, and secure, poker technologyavailable in the online poker industry. 9ballpoker.com is a site where poolplayers feel at home as familiar billiard imagery is present on every page. You even play around a pool table sporting the new tournament bluecloth. The goal is to create a lot of added money for pool tournaments. Crosssponsorship with leading billiard industry manufacturers will be offered. Now players can enter poker tournaments and not only win cash, butcool pool products too. 9ballpoker.com is in also negotiation with prominentpool, and poker, players to both represent the site and challenge playersin “Beat the Pro” live poker tourneys.Says Mark, “ You may not be able to beat them on a pool table, but at9ballpoker.com you have a chance to get even.”Go on, “Give yourself a Hand,” visit 9ballpoker.com and play where itpays to be a pool player.

LEWISTOWN, MONTANAI arrived at 3 o’clock in the afternoon on Friday and as it is every year, youreacquaint yourself with business associates, friends and just the goodold feeling of getting out of town.

The State 8-Ball tournament startedback in 1981 and has been invarious locations throughout thestate, with the most predominantlocation being West Yellowstone, Ibelieve. The town sits in the middleof a volcanic caldron and if youwatch your science channel, it isbelieved to be the largest volcaniceruption known to the third rock. Allthe pool players that I talked to almostexclusively have the samesentiment. They would like the statechampionships to be heldsomewhere new, somewhere else.

The problem being, as in real estate, “location, location, location”, a placebig enough. A place that must fit forty pool tables, house some four hundredplayers and have access to beef and potatoes or some other delicacy

that would delight your pallet. The oldsaying “Be careful what you wish for… you might get it”. Rumor has itnew locations may be in the works, but we’ll have to wait and see.A big hit at the tournament this year was their logo T-shirts, creativelydesigned on a black T-shirt. I for one , and I’m not alone, thank you for thegreat T-shirts. Another item that was introduced to this year’s 8-BallChampionships was a commemorative souvenir CuePen and soft leathercase. It has the date, event and location that make it a cool keepsake. Ifyou didn’t get one at the tournament you can find out how to by going towww.CuePen.com or by calling 406-285-3099.There are six divisions in the State 8-Ball Championships: Men’s A and B,Women’s A and B, and Second Chance Men & Women. In the SecondChance Tournament each first place winner received a commemorativeplaque, while the top three in each of the other divisions received acommemorative plaque. Those winning several times overthe years include Jerry Kohm ofBillings who has won seven times, the first being in 1982, then 1988,1992, 1997, 1998, 2001 and 2002.Other multiple winners are DonOliver of Missoula (1987, 1990,1994). Georgianna Casteel of Butte(1994, 1998), Jane Bartrum-Plant ofBelgrade (1988, 2000, 2003), GailLave of Laurel (1986, 1989, 1990,1991, 1992), Terry Bummer ofBillings (1993, 1996), Janet Dunksof Butte (1992, 1999), Jason Tigartof Great Falls (1996, 2000), DebbieKeithcart of Helena (1994, 1995),Jeff Boucher of Bozeman (1999,2004, 2006), Sky Tigart of GreatFalls (1996, 2002), MorganSteinmanof Hamilton (2001, 2003, 2005) andLinda Asleson of Billings (1995,2004, 2006).It was great to see everybody andI’m looking forward to seeingeverybody next year that I don’t seealong the way.Chris Warren of Capital Music addedthese closing remarks, “Thanks tothe dedication of the coin machineoperators of Montana we hope tocontinue to grow and promote thegame of pool and thanks to all thepool players.”

The match wastied again at 4-4, but Ouschanwon two in a row to get to the hillat 6-4. From there, they splitracks on their breaks andOuschan won 7-5.The men’s finals saw Souquet runthe first 3 racks he broke and hetook a 4-2 lead by takingadvantage of a dry break byArcher. A great shot in game 8 byArcher knotted the score back at4-4, but Archer went for a very

tough cut shot in the 11th game that cost him the rack. It looked likeArcher would get a chance to redeem himself when Souquet got badshape on the 1-ball in the final rack, but Souquet played a great two waybank on the one that left him out in the final rack. Both Ouschan and Souquet earned $20,000 for their wins, while Archerand Fisher settled for $10,000 in prize money. The action from the semi-final rounds set the field for the finals.Souquet won a grueling hill-hill match against Efren Reyes on Friday toearn his spot in the finals. The match between Souquet and Reyes sawneither player able to capitalize on their break early and the first sevenracks were won by the player who was not breaking. Souquet finally pulledahead 5-3, but Reyes pulled back even at 6-6. Reyes had the break in thefinal game but left a combo on the one ball after the break. first place honors and the $400 prize going undefeated. Carl Wilson fromCarson City NV, took 2nd and $260 for his efforts.Carl Wilson’s first match was with Tony Chohan. Tony took the first 5games in a race to 6. Carl battled back, capitalizing on Tony’s very fewmistakes to tie the match at 5-5 and then snapped in the 9 ball for theearly win. Tony went on to the one loss side and won all his matchesgoing into the finals of the One Loss bracket. Guess who he met there?Carl Wilson. Once again, Tony took command and got to the hill withouta loss, but, as fate would repeat itself, Carl would once again battle backto get to Hill-Hill and win on a ‘Snapper’.Frank Nordman played almost flawless in the first match against CarlWilson in the finals and won, eliminating the need for the second match.Saturday May 6th, 2006 Monthly One Pocket1st $300 Tony Chohan2nd $220 Trevor Smith3rd $140 Frank Nordman4th $100 Warren Costanza5/6 $80 Bobby Hunter and Charles Lintz7/8 $50 JAG and James WilliamsSunday May 7th, 2006 Monthly 9 Ball1st $400 Frank Nordman2nd $260 Carl Wilson3rd $180 Tony Chohan4th $130 Lance Salazar5/6 $90 Joey Gebron and Josh Palmer7/8 $60 Walter Dorcey and Josh Duncan9-12 $50 Trevor Smith, Ed Ames, Bobby Hunter, Tinsley Johnson

The Open Team Divisions are among the most sought-after crowns in all ofpool. There is always a lot of talent on display in this division and there arehandsome rewards for victory in these toughest of areas. The Men’s OpenTeam Champions for 2006 are The Strateagery of Denver, Colorado. Theirwin over Dick’s Picks of Las Vegas earned them a very tidy $10,600. TheWomen’s Open Team title was taken by another in a long line of great teamsplaying out of our host city. Las Vegas’ own CueTee’s grabbed $4,000 fortheir win over The Jawbreakers out of Portland, OR.

that I have just about bored you enough. I can’timagine a person understanding our industry sowell in the short time since he sailed over fromthe marine products of the company. Since a lot of buyers didn’t choose Houstonas an industry destination or April was a bad timefor the swim pool /spa/ billiard people I had someextra time to roam the hall. The busiest spot wasthe J-S booth. I had a chance to visit with Janet

Shimel the president. I first met Jan when herfather, Ben brought the whole family to visit ourshop on S.E. Bybee in 1965. I had been buyingSampio cues from Ben that were manufacturedin Belgium. Ben, his wife Dawn who ran thecompany after Ben’s death are all gone, but Janstill remembers the visit. She has expanded theline from the Sampio cue to every major productin the accessory line including Cuetec, Joss,Excaliber, many of the cloth people, and so manynovelty products that the booth was a must tovisit. BCA is sure they made a mistake in choosingHouston, but was that all. Is it the date or dothey need something to bring the 886 buyersback and add more, for buyers are the key to asuccessful show. If you have any comments Iwill be glad to send them on to the powers. Wewill be seeing a new director after Aug. StephenDucoff will be retiring and the new director whomever it is can use all the input. See you in LosVegas next year.
