This is such an exciting community to live in. Not just because of the incredible movements already happening but also because of the conversations that continue to be had about what’s next for the Fargo Moorhead West Fargo community. One of those conversations is about a convention center.

While permanent flood protection and workforce continue to pose major challenges for our area, a significant opportunity for

continued progress is a convention center in a location that makes the most sense for the community.

No matter where a convention center is physically built, the long-term effects it will have on the entire metro region could be astronomical. I’ve heard speculation that a convention center is a want, and not a need, and I disagree. A convention center is needed because not having one is a substantial deterrent for our region’s growth in coming years. Right now, we’re able to host great events like regional hockey tournaments, curling trials, etc., but can you imagine what or who our community might play host to if we had a convention center?

We need to focus not on the money-making aspect of a

convention center but rather on the overall economic stimulation. Convention centers put people in the beds in hotels, in rental vehicles, in retail stores and restaurants. The economic impact of convention centers is much broader compared to taxing structures, according to the book “Current Issues in Convention and Exhibition Facility Development.” Consider this:

In the 2013-14 fiscal year, the Oregon Convention Center hosted more than 300 events, bringing nearly 550,000 people to Portland. The events generated nearly $300 million in direct spending in the region, according to the center’s annual report.

In the 2013 fiscal year, the Las Vegas Convention Center generated nearly $1 billion in direct spending by convention and meeting attendees. That spending resulting in the support of 7,800 jobs, which generated $306 million in wages, according to a 2013 economic impact series brief.

I recognize the hyperbolic nature of this information; however, my point is that convention centers promote economic growth. As a steward of that exact mission, The Chamber firmly believes a convention center is essential to our region’s continued growth.

Networking SuccessHow to build successful relationships through networking events

Networking is a powerful tactic to help you accelerate success because you are making connections and building mutually beneficial relationships.

With individuals and businesses being constantly bombarded by more traditional marketing tactics (i.e. mailers, emails, ads, etc.), personal relationships help you stand out from other competitors and stay top-of-mind. Leverage your relationships to cultivate new ones, and you will be on your way to success.

According to the Strategic Business Network, connecting with other business professionals helps you learn more about your industry, create referral networks, develop knowledgeable resources and accelerate your own professional development.

The SBN has a few ideas for how to maximize your networking abilities, such as:§Embracing small talk. Some people may think small talk is

unproductive, but it really can lead to larger conversations about critical business issues.

§Developing an arsenal of conversation starters, like asking how a person got into his or her line of work, the current trends in the industry, useful promotion ideas, etc. The questions you ask leave an impression, so be sure to ask questions that help you look informed and interested.

§Politely interrupting when you really want to meet someone. Wait for a good breaking point before apologizing for the interruption and introducing yourself.

§Standing near the food because endorphin levels are higher when we stand near food. That means meeting people near the buffet can increase the chance you’ll be remembered.

§Reading business books not only to stay informed but to give you fodder for conversation as well as recommendations for others.

§Being aware of space. You can exude confidence by taking up space. Also, put people at ease by mirroring your conversation partner’s body language to add to your own likeability. To read more about how to successfully network, check out

Cities Built for PeopleProvide sense of place and increased safety

An urban planner from Ulteig asserted last month that building cities people want to live in requires a major shift from the current design standards.

Mike Zimney told a crowd of approximately 120 people at Eggs & Issues that engineers and planners began laying out urban areas by emulating how interstates are designed – with wide lanes and minimal roadside hazards.

That design aesthetic has resulted in places that do not encourage walking and socializing, Zimney explained.

“A place is walkable when people want to walk because they feel like they are missing out if they don’t,” he said.

Modern street design also encourages faster driving and less caution, leading to increased traffic fatalities and less safe neighborhoods. Before the design shift occurred, the United States ranked behind only the United Kingdom in safest streets. Today, the United Kingdom still tops the list, but the United States has dropped off the list.

Creating great places comes down to two concepts:1. Providing a sense of place where people can see without

being seen, a natural instinct that has transferred from our time as hunters.

2. Designing streets for people, not for cars. On-street parking, narrow lanes, frequent intersections, tight curb radius, the presence of trees and pedestrians automatically result in slower traffic.

If you see fences along streets, chances are traffic is moving too fast because homeowners and business owners are blocking out road noise, Zimney said.

“Mike Zimney’s presentation was a very eye-opening presentation in seeing the different studies of what people want versus what people actually buy,” said ROERS Marketing Director Brianne Hoffman. “Because many of our developments are from the ground up, we found this information very useful both for commercial development as well as residential.”

City of Fargo Commission Mike Williams also provided an update on issues affecting the downtown area such as the need for in-fill to increase property values, additional parking, the new City Hall as well as a bike share program.

Developers Steve Iverson and Steve Stoner described challenges they face balancing the desire for neighborhoods with a sense of place while keeping costs at a reasonable level.

F-M Area DiversionSpecial assessments related to diversion to be set

A plan to finance the local share of the F-M Area Diversion Project will save thousands of dollars a year for some Fargo homeowners, compared to potential flood insurance rates.

The Cass County Joint Water Resource District (CCJWRD) is administering an assessment district throughout the area in North Dakota benefited by the Diversion Project. The intent is for property owners to not have to make assessed payments; a sales tax will do that.

The “liability district” is a special assessment process, but it is different from the special assessment process used by a city. The state allows a water district to use a process in which each property owner gets a vote. The weight of each property’s vote is based on the benefit assigned to the property, so the higher a property’s value and protection level, the more that property’s vote is weighted and is ultimately assessed. Properties which are not in as much risk of flooding will not be assessed as much under the liability district.

Leadership class explores undiscovered aspects of community

Last month, the Leadership Fargo Moorhead West Fargo class spent an action-packed day learning more about hidden parts of the community that provide important services and contribute to the local economy.

Before visiting a variety of locations, the class learned about local history in a unique way: Steve Stark illustrated how the area was settled by telling stories while drawing the entire sequence on an enormous piece of paper. And, he was in historical costume.

"As leaders in the community, it is your responsibility to know and tell the story of this region's history," Stark said.

For the afternoon, the class divided into four groups to traverse the metro learning about the following businesses:§United Blood Services, which advances

cutting-edge research and embraces continuous improvement.

§The YWCA Cass Clay, which provides emergency shelter, children’s services, education and employment training, transitional housing and racial justice.

§Happy Harry’s Bottle Shops, which has been an integral part of the North Dakota landscape and lifestyle for more than 70 years.

§The Fargo Fire Department, which offers trained firefighters and seven stations throughout the community.

§Family HealthCare, which offers comprehensive, primary medical and dental care to anyone who needs it.

§The Fargo Water Treatment Plant, which treats almost 11 million gallons of water per day and is capable of producing 30 million.

§West Acres Shopping Center, which offers more than 120 shops as one of the top shopping destinations of the upper Midwest.

§The Ronald McDonald House of the Red River Valley, which provides a home-away-from-home for families with children in the hospital. The class wrapped up the day by congregating

at Cardinal IG for a final tour. The company is the largest fabricator of sealed insulating glass units that supplies more than half of the low-emissivity coatings used in North America.

Thank you to Cass County Electric Cooperative, Inc. for hosting our morning.

Connecting with Presence

We have all come across people who possess a strong personal presence. They exude confidence, appear comfortable in their own skin and have the ability to make others feel at ease too.

The good news is personal presence can be learned, but it must be authentic.

Tonya Stende from Dale Carnegie Business Group of ND and Kristi Huber of Alerus Financial will help you understand how having an assertive personal presence can open doors for you in business as well as make you stand out from the crowd.

Presence gets you in front of people you would otherwise never meet, creates incredible opportunities and ensures you leave a lasting impact wherever you go.

Are you interested in establishing healthy, supportive, authentic female relationships in the workplace? In trading in the habit of comparing and competing with females for embracing, supporting and accepting one another? Do you wish to recognize, and free yourself from pressures and constraints of long-engrained societal influences that

interfere with these aspirations? If these questions resonate with you, and you

are prepared to discover how to live a life where comparison no longer steals your joy, and where women, including yourself, are seen not as competition but as sources of inspiration, wisdom and support, then this session is for you.

Presented by Michelle Kommer, chief administrative officer/general counsel at Western State Bank, this session will explore the dynamics of women’s relationships with one another in the workplace, acknowledging and explaining the tendency to compare and compete with, and in the worst case, oppress one another, while providing actionable strategies that will result in tremendous personal and professional satisfaction, increased confidence, and meaningful, supportive female relationships.

Attend to discover the key to unleashing the power of these authentic connections!

February SessionFocused on confidence

A sold-out crowd of 300 people learned about confidence and the complexities of having it, improving it and demonstrating it. Led by Tonya Stende of Dale Carnegie Business Group of ND and Pam McGee from Minnesota State University Moorhead, the second session of The Chamber’s female-focused program provided attendees with research and an opportunity to connect with other women over the important topic of confidence.

McGee included live polls so attendees could guess the answer to questions regarding confidence; she also explained the acronym ACT, a tool kit for understanding how to connect with confidence.

A = Accept without judgment.C = Choose to let go of self-doubt.T = Take risks even if you fail.“This is a wonderful tool to help make decisions, connect

with people, and try new things,” said attendee Amber Vogel from Sundog. “These tools are why Women Connect is so

important. It is a means for women to network and solve problems, share stories and move dreams forward.”

Confidence requires applauding other people for a task you can do and accepting yourself without judgment, which allows you to accept others.

“Are you more worried about being right or about moving forward?” McGee questioned.

McGee also encouraged attendees to work on being likable but not worrying out always being liked. She also recommended connecting with someone who pushes you. Confidence also means being able to take big risks and having a high level of self-compassion to deal with the aftermath of taking risks.

“As a female in a male-dominated industry, being truly confident in myself helps gain trust and rapport between myself and my colleagues, promoting collaboration and engagement within teams,” said attendee Stephanie Pearson from John Deere Electronic Solutions.

The session was held at the beautifully renovated Avalon Events Center West to accommodate a larger crowd than originally planned.

When you pull up to the Robert Gibb & Sons building, you’ll see the spot closest to the door is reserved for George Gibb. No, it’s not a perk for the president of the company to park close. George is the 92-year-old uncle of current president, Robert Gibb III (Bob), who still comes into the office almost every day.

The company, which was founded by Robert Gibb, Sr. in 1915, has had a Robert Gibb at the helm for three generations, spanning 100 years.

The plumbing, heating, cooling and electrical company prides itself on preparing for the future. When Robert Sr. first branched out on his own, the company was Robert Gibb Plumbing, which focused on plumbing and heating. The company has since diversified their offerings. “Back in the ‘50s, we got into sheet metal and HVAC, as well as the sewer and water utility business,” Bob said.

As a company that purposefully thinks about what’s next, workforce issues are top of mind. “There is so much work, and there aren’t as many young people going into the building trades as there used to be,” Bob said. “The (Associate General Contractors) offer incentives and scholarships for students to earn building related degrees,” Greg Gibb, executive vice president and owner with Bob, said. “We are actively participating in that endeavor to get young people interested.”

Incentivizing students isn’t their only outlet for finding new talent. “We invested in multiple areas of recruitment last year,” said Kevin Riley, VP service, sales and marketing as well as Greg and Bob’s brother-in-law. “We’ve used recruiters, websites, newspaper, the unions, we’ve even used restroom billboards. Everything we could think of to get new talent.”

One of Robert Gibb & Sons’ most successful recruiting efforts is word-of-mouth. The service manager teaches apprentice programs and finds new talent through that program. Their employees tell their friends about the business because they enjoy working there.

The company also takes retention to a whole new level. While it isn’t surprising that there have been multiple generations from one family in management positions, it may surprise you to know that some employees had parents who worked at Robert Gibb & Sons. “We have several employees who have fathers who worked their whole career here,” said Bob.

After making it the first 100 years, the Gibbs are preparing themselves for the next 100.

The 100-year celebration will be held on June 4, two of Robert Sr.’s children’s birthdays. Don would have been 98 and Robert Jr. would have been 100.

The notion of spring cleaning was born during the time when houses were shut up to protect a family from the harsh cold; these poorly ventilated dwellings collected dirt and oil all winter from the home’s heating elements, according to a Britannica blog post about the history of spring cleaning. Once spring rolled around, the family set to work restoring the home to a state of cleanliness.

We may not need to worry about soot or smoke anymore, but spring is typically still viewed as a prime opportunity to deep-clean your home. If taking on the task of cleaning your entire home seems daunting, see if one (or more) of these members can help lighten the load for you.
