LETTER

As a young medical student at Boston University in the 1980s, I had the privilege of working with mentors who infused my education with a deep appreciation for academic collaboration, community health and patient-centered compassionate care. I am committed to treating all patients with dignity and respect without regard to socioeconomic level, age, gender identity, ethnicity or medical condition. These principles have defined my career as a practitioner in infectious diseases, a medical educator, the Chief Medical Officer at Montefiore Medical Center, and now as the Senior Vice-President for Network Integration at NYU Langone Health. I am tremendously excited by the opportunity to lead the Department of Dental Medicine at NYU Langone.

At the time NYU Langone Health merged with Lutheran Medical Center, I was particularly intrigued by Lutheran Dental Medicine’s remarkable residency program. It embodies my lifelong commitment to healthy communities, educational excellence and equitable access to affordable care — all made possible because of Dr. Neal A. Demby’s vision and diligence that began more than four decades ago. Dr. Demby, a pioneer in dental education, has devoted his entire career to improving oral health in vulnerable populations while simultaneously training postdoctoral dentists to become outstanding practitioners. NYU Langone Dental

Medicine is now the proud sponsor of seven postdoctoral residency programs that trains over 400 dental residents annually in community health centers, university practices, and other ambulatory sites in underserved communities. The program is offered in 30 states and the Caribbean. In the 2017/2018 academic year, residents treated 800,441 vulnerable patients, an increase of 18.7% from the previous year. Kudos to Dr. Demby, Dr. Lieberman and our nationwide team of dedicated professionals.

What’s next? I say, “the possibilities are endless!”

Out of the gate, with Dr. Demby as a senior trusted advisor, we will build on the rich legacy of graduate dental education at NYU Langone Brooklyn through greater integration with NYU Langone Health (NYULH). The NYU Langone Health system includes a tuition-free medical school that is ranked #3 nationally and a US News and World Report honor roll hospital. In September 2019, NYULH will merge with NYU Winthrop Hospital in Mineola, NY. We will launch a second medical school, NYU Long Island School of Medicine, centered at that location — a medical school that is focused on training primary care physicians. By leveraging these new initiatives along with an abundance of NYULH assets, the dental residency

program will have greater opportunities to:

• Expand training venues nationally, and develop curricula that embrace state-of-the-art procedures and technologies;

• Invest in research by building collaborations with NYULH and the University, both world-renowned and highly ranked institutions;

• Develop operational improvements that enhance the resident experience at Brooklyn FQHC sites including implementation of the Epic EMR dental module, Wisdom;

• Promote cross-discipline programs between dental and medical services across the clinical enterprise;

• Capitalize on the excellent reputation of NYULH for resident and training site recruitment;

• Train faculty to become leaders and role models in graduate dental education.

Together, we can achieve greater success in eradicating disparities in oral health care. There are many opportunities in front of us; together we can build on the broad tradition of this department to reach new heights.

Sincerely,

nYU langone dental Medicine

The largest community health center-based postdoctoral residency program in the world.

OUR MISSION: To develop and grow national oral health programs that set global standards for technologically advanced, culturally competent, patient-centered dental education; to deliver exceptional oral health care to the world’s neediest citizens and its most underserved communities; and to accomplish these goals while grounded in service and collaboration.

dr. bonilla-claudio

“Having a sense of community helps in times like these. We live trying to forget the hurricane and the aftermath. Too much pain.”

“Two days after Hurricane Maria struck Puerto Rico, roads were inaccessible. MedCentro’s dental office was flooded, however electricity and water were always available due to power generators. Most patients were not able to make it to their

appointments during the first week of operation. Hence, we just had a few emergencies.

“The first challenges I had were driving to MedCentro and knowing what happened to the dental clinic. I weathered the hurricane in my home town (Caguas) with my parents and family (at that time I was a mother of one and pregnant with my second child). All communications were down (no cell phone, telephone, internet, radio and television). Moreover,

gasoline was in short supply and to be able to access it you had to wait 8-12 hours (sometimes more) in line. At that time, I did not know if I could make it to Ponce (a trip that normally takes about 1.25 hours). I finally got back to Ponce a week later!

“At my home in Juana Diaz, I didn’t have electric service and water for five weeks and no phone or internet for another two months.”

Margarita Bonilla-Claudio, Ph.D., DMD and Tanialis Ortiz Rivera, DMD both second-year AEGD residents training in their native land of Puerto Rico—were kind enough to take time out of their busy schedules to share with the entire NYU Langone Dental family some of what they experienced in Hurricane Maria.

All islands in the U.S. territories in the Caribbean suffered damage in Hurricane Maria, some of which was enhanced by Hurricane Irma, which passed through the islands two weeks earlier. After sweeping across the Virgin Islands as a Category 5 storm, Hurricane Maria plowed into Puerto Rico on the southeast shore as a barely diminished Category 4 storm with winds of 155 miles per hour. The hurricane weakened over Puerto Rico, then moved north of the Dominican Republic as a Category 3 storm.

We are blessed that NYU Langone Dental residents and faculty who train and teach in our AEGD and ENDO residency programs in the Caribbean survived Hurricane Maria in September 2017.

We are amazed by how they endured, pulling together to keep operations as normal as possible within their health care centers. And we are proud that so many residents and faculty volunteered their time to assist with numerous organized community efforts that reached out to countless hurricane victims in desperate need of clean water, food, shelter and other necessities of life.

dr. rivera trains at Puerto Rico Correctional Health Service Corp. (Bayamon facility), which was created in 2005 by the Administration of Corrections of Puerto Rico to enable inmates and pre-trial detainees to receive an integrated array of physical, dental and mental health care services in compliance with required national and federal standards..

dr. rivera

“During this experience we returned to the basics—that less is more—disconnected from technology and connected with people and communication. All Puerto Ricans gave the best of themselves. It made us stronger.”

“This experience showed us how to work as a community. My co-residents, faculty and I carried out an emergency plan. We organized a channel of communication before the storm. One resident was in charge of communicating with others in order to determine if everything was good or if somebody needed something. My co-residents and I developed short conferences in our training sites about basic hygiene protocols. We gave mosquito bracelets to our patients and families as a public health strategy.

“One challenge I faced during the storm was treating patients with emergencies who were in pain. With no power, the X-ray machine was unavailable, so we were limited in our diagnostic abilities. Some patients did not understand the situation.

“My parents’ home in Humacao, a county at the east of the island, suffered big damages, so they are living with me in Bayamon until their house is reconstructed.”

nYu langone dental residencY training sites in the caribbean

NYU Langone Dental has a long history in the Caribbean and currently operates AEGD and ENDO residency training programs at five health care centers in Puerto Rico and one in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Outside of tourist areas in these regions, poverty runs rampant, particularly among children. In conjunction with our valued health center partners in the Caribbean, we are proud that our programs help to ensure equitable and affordable dental care to those in need. Community health centers are a critical part of the health care system in Puerto Rico, where 20 federally funded health centers provide primary and preventive care services at more than 90 urban and rural sites across the island.

HEALTH CENTER SPOTLIGHT

"Working with the NYU residents has been a great experience — an AEGD residency is a great opportunity for the residents to explore a variety of procedures, increase speed, feel more comfortable with diagnosis and treatment, and establish themselves as practitioners. Salud is a unique place where we treat every member of the family from new baby to great grandparents. We offer comprehensive care in all stages of life for people who otherwise might not be able to access dental care. Having a medical department and pharmacy is another advantage to taking care of our patients as a whole person."

Boriana Pumpalova, DDS, who works at Commerce City Salud said, "What I enjoy most about working with residents is the interaction with them, the questions they pose, and case discussions as they are learning and progressing. The benefit to the residents is the mentoring they receive and that they get the experience of working in an integrated health care facility where multiple specialties

work together and can consult with each other. We are a well-functioning organization where we can provide comprehensive treatment for the patient combining medical, dental, behavioral health, pharmacy, care managers, etc.

Our residents do the same procedures as our providers: comprehensive care for medically and dentally compromised and complex patients, crowns, bridges, surgical extractions, biopsies, removable prosthesis, etc.

AEGD residents share their extraordinary experience

dr. taYlor rae postler

"During my time as a resident at Salud I have had the opportunity to perform a wide variety of procedures including impacted third molar extractions, mandibular tori removal, molar endodontics, and esthetic crown cases. We also have the opportunity to work directly with a pediatric dentist, learning how to manage children with more complex dental needs. The experience has been a great transition from dental school into the professional world, and has helped me become more confident with advanced procedures. I have also learned a lot about public health through being involved in community outreach programs at local schools and participating in provider meetings. These experiences have helped me to learn how an FQHC can provide high-quality, comprehensive care to Medicaid and uninsured patients."

dr. monika czekalska

"I have really enjoyed community outreach programs implemented by Salud in August. They involve traveling to local elementary schools and high schools to provide free dental screenings and sealant treatment. The opportunity to work with a pediatric dentist while rotating through another Salud clinic has also enriched my experience and taught me more about pediatric patient management.

Since the beginning of the program, I have performed a wide range of operative procedures, root canals and completed a number of partial and complete dentures. The highlight has been delivering a three-unit anterior FDP and a series of surgical extractions, including impacted third molars."

They have a firm commitment to provide care to all community members regardless of finances, insurance coverage, or ability to pay. They offer a

sliding fee scale based on family size and income. Insurance enrollment assistance is available.

“Salud Family Health Centers is really excited for this new partnership with NYU Langone Dental Medicine. We have an incredible opportunity to train the next generation of dentists working in communities across this country. Salud’s staff enjoy the opportunity to work with the residents, and since they are at our clinics for such a long period of time, they are able to provide patient continuity while delivering comprehensive dental care," remarked Ethan Kerns, DDS, CDO for Salud Family Health Centers

Lisa Bennett, DDS works with NYU Langone Dental Medicine residents at Brighton Salud Clinic. She spoke candidly about her experience working with dental residents.

FACULTY SPOTLIGHT

At Healthpoint, residents are taught how to recognize barriers that patients face, specifically patients who might not otherwise have access to dental services. "We focus on whole-person care," says Dr. Alexander. "If my patient is struggling with addiction or maintaining a job, I have resources here in my clinic that I can connect them to. If my patient has hypertension, I can get them an appointment with their primary care provider the same day or soon thereafter. Our faculty and staff know that the mouth is not separate from the rest of the body. Oral health influences overall health and vice versa. By treating the whole person, we can measurably improve their overall health in conjunction with their oral health.”

It’s this focus on whole-person care that Dr. Alexander tries to teach young dentists. Dr. Alexander spends two days per week in the clinic working directly with NYU Langone Dental Medicine residents as a mentor and coach. Her goal is to help them better understand the patient experience and the challenges many of their patients face on a daily basis.

She wants residents to be more than just excellent “tooth technicians,”— to become compassionate healthcare providers who recognize the barriers that patients face, specifically those who might not otherwise have access to dental and medical services. Her goal is to help them perform excellent dentistry while also understanding the challenges and barriers patients face in scheduling and arriving to their appointments. “I try to walk residents through the patient experience of navigating a complex health care system. If a person needs a dental appointment, how do they find us? Do they walk in or call us for an appointment? If they’re afraid or in pain, just the act of making a phone call could be a huge step for them. Do they have reliable transportation to get to their appointment? Do they need an interpreter?

Do they have the ability to arrange for childcare or eldercare or do they need to bring family members with them? If a patient is able to successfully get to an appointment, do we turn them away if they are ten minutes late? I want our residents to see themselves as part of the solution to breaking down barriers to care for patients.”

HealthPoint is committed to educating the future workforce. It is part of their mission to train and develop healthcare providers who care for vulnerable populations and strengthen communities. Of those who have graduated from the NYU Langone Dental Medicine AEGD program at HealthPoint, 70% of the graduates have stayed in the state of Washington, 60% with HealthPoint.

70% of NYU Langone Dental Medicine AEGD graduates from HealthPoint have gone on to practice in community health settings and 60% of these graduates continue to work for HealthPoint.

The residency program was established with the idea of providing an experience where residents are guided to think like a doctor, not a dental student. In dental school, students are accustomed to asking for permission to treat a patient or provide a specific service or procedure. In the NYU Langone Dental Medicine AEGD program, health center faculty mentors aim to teach confidence and competency along with a focus on community service. Residents graduate able to enter private practice, secure teaching positions, and continue to serve their communities with a public health mission. These experiences make residents a more informed citizen and compassionate health care provider. It is also what keeps Dr. Alexander getting out of bed each day excited to come to work and proud of the organization she represents.

Interview with Jennifer Alexander, DDS

Jennifer Alexander, DDS is the Regional Director of Dental Clinical Care for HealthPoint, with administrative offices located in Renton, WA.

At age 8, Jennifer started telling people that she wanted to be a dentist when she grows up. Over time, she realized that her love of science, medicine and working with her hands would really lend itself well to a career in dentistry. In 2001, she received her Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry from the University of Washington in Seattle. She then went on to complete her dental education and graduated from the University of Washington School of Dentistry in 2005. While she initially pursued an opportunity in private practice, she never forgot her passion of caring for vulnerable patient populations. In 2013 a mutual friend introduced Dr. Alexander to the Chief Dental Officer at HealthPoint. She decided it was time to follow her heart and dove headfirst into community health practice.

“Healthpoint's dental residency program was an incredible opportunity for me to expand my clinical knowledge, gain experiences with procedures I didn't get in dental school, and to maximize my efficiency in the operatories. Residents in the program were given the freedom to step outside their comfort zones and allowed to think outside the box when treating each patient. Our mentors encouraged us to think independently as leaders. If there is one phrase that could summarize everything I took from HealthPoint, it would be "education is a continuous journey, not a destination.”

SCHOOL HEALTH

The Dental School Health Program Continues to Expand

RecRuiting tRacking Database PlatfoRm

OPTImAP UPDATE

It has been over 2 years since we launched the OPTIMAP database platform. Utilizing the Salesforce infrastructure, OPTIMAP helps us to track residents in the following ways:

Dental School

At 30-40 annual events, student names, email addresses, and class year is acquired and entered into OPTIMAP. Their class year determines the frequency and type of message communicated to them. Every interaction with prospective applicants is logged during their dental school years.

Application

4th year students apply through PASS. OPTIMAP is now integrated with the PASS application. Webadmit automatically feeds completed applications into OPTIMAP. This allows those in the NYU Langone Dental Medicine network to see each program and location that an applicant has applied to.

Ranking and Match

A standardized ranking system within OPTIMAP allows directors to score and rank all their applicants. All of the match results are then imported into OPTIMAP late January.

Post-Match Application

At match, NYU Langone Dental Medicine launches its post-match application via the lmcdental.org website where applicants can apply for all post-match positions free of charge online. The application was developed within the Salesforce environment. Every applicant is directly imported into OPTIMAP.

Residency and Beyond

Following graduation, the resident record is changed to an alumni record. OPTIMAP allows users to track all interactions with alumni, including phone and email communications, event participation, work history, and more.

Questions or training requests, contact: Eric Malone, Manager of Extramural Development, 718-630-9592 or [email protected]

OPTIMAP has helped us to standardize the application process as well as track and analyze our data more effectively to impact the strategic plan.

Led by Clinical Director (and NYU Langone Dental Medicine GPR and Pediatric Dentistry alumna) Dr. Lynn Gargano reported that the program has already opened clinical sites at three new schools (PS 92, PS 12/MS 484, PS 2) for the 2018-2019 school year, with four more schools (PS 91, PS 243, PS 44, PS/IS 157) in Brooklyn and Staten Island slated to open in early 2019, bringing the total number of schools to an impressive 45 schools receiving comprehensive dental care. The program is projected to treat 6,000-7,000 students in the 2018-2019 school year. Dr. Gargano oversees a team of 43 professionals including 16 part-time dentists and 11 dental assistants.

“I was most proud of how our program expanded its depth last school year,” said Dr. Gargano. “The enthusiasm from both school administrators and parents is unmatched, and they truly see the value add in services our Outreach Team offers, such as oral health education sessions for parents and students. The Dental School Health Outreach Team is so active that we

recently had to add another outreach specialist to the team to keep up with the demand for services.”

“The Joint Commission inspection process in the spring allowed the team to become much more infection control focused, and it improved processes for every aspect of care we provide, from how we provide preventative maintenance on equipment to how our instruments are picked up for reprocessing,” said Gargano. “We received positive feedback from so many of the infection control and regulatory teams that visited the schools. I’m extremely proud of our entire team.”

nYu langone health was once again named to the best hospitals honor roll

In August 2018, U.S. News and World Report announced its annual “Best Hospitals” rankings. NYU Langone Health was once again named to the Best Hospitals Honor Roll, at no. 15 in the nation, a significant leap from our no. 19 ranking last year. Additionally, we are ranked no. 2 in New York State and no. 2 in the New York metropolitan area, up from no. 3 in both categories last year.

named to 2019 best graduate schools: top medical schools: research

We are so proud to announce that our School of Medicine ranked no. 3 in the nation out of 144 medical schools nationwide on the 2018–2019 “Best Graduate Schools” list issued online by U.S. News & World Report. https://www.usnews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-medical-schools

Free medical school tuition arrives at nYu (langone)

AUGUST 16, 2018, the fantastic news was announced by Kenneth Langone of the NYU Medical School trustees that there would be free medical school tuition from now on.

This is amazing news for students at the #3 ranked Medical School in the nation (it is tied with Stanford) which has 531 students and charges $52,814/year.

Without the huge burden of tuition and its repayment, it is hoped that students will consider medical areas which would have been ignored in the past due to lack of funds.

This forward thinking plan will probably now spread to other medical schools as they compete for the best students. It is a concept that will hopefully change both medical education and healthcare for the better. (Ann Rabinowitz)

drs. david reznik and eunice chaY team up to create oh-i-can app For research and patient care

Dr. David Reznik, NYU Langone Dental Medicine AEGD Associate Program Director in Georgia and Dr. Eunice Chay, NYU Langone Dental Medicine AEGD alumnus, '18 created APP OH-I-CAN, which is in the testing phase. This APP includes the OHIP 14 (oral health related quality of life), which can be used for research and patient care.

Title: Oral Health In Communities and Neighborhoods (OH I CAN) aka The Burden of Poor Oral Health in Georgia

To address the vast oral health disparities that exist for low income and minority families, the dental/healthcare neighborhood program seeks to create a community wide comprehensive oral health network in a low income and minority neighborhoods to increase access to oral health education and services. The oral health program performed community needs assessments which informed the team's work. Other goals of the project are to increase the number of healthcare professionals in low resource areas trained to provide basic oral health care/cancer screening; train primary care registered nurses, nurse practitioner, and nurse practitioner students to provide basic oral examinations, cancer screening and how to administer fluoride varnish; improving community knowledge about preventive oral care; increase the dental workforce by allowing dental hygienists to perform preventive dental care via indirect supervision; and increase capacity and improve quality of low cost oral healthcare through the NYU Langone Dental Medicine AEGD residency program. nYu langone dental medicine aegd residents at the nYu cod site research accomplishments

The Research Scholarship Expo is an annual event hosted by the NYU College of Dentistry to showcase research. It celebrates exceptional efforts by health care professionals at all levels. After Scientific Committees’ review, top presenters qualify to compete at nationally/internationally recognized research symposiums.

For the academic year 2017-18, the NYU Langone Dental Medicine AEGD Program-NYUCD Campus, had three PGY1 clinical research presentations that were successfully defended, with one grand prize overall category winner with a cash award!

These presentations subsequently qualified for live national competition at the Academy of General Dentistry National Meeting in New Orleans June, 2018 which included PGY2 level and above placing in the top 30 of finalists!

Presenters were mentored by Dr. Peter Mychajliw, Associate Director, AEGD Program. Presentations included:

Category winner: Conservative Tooth Replacement and Ridge Preservation in the Aesthetic ZonePresenter: Dr. Luke Harms (AEGD resident)

This presentation illustrates a novel, conservative and cost effective approach to replacement of a lost clinical crown in the aesthetic zone. The procedure provides the patient with a definitive Fixed Partial Denture with minimal abutment tooth preparation and retains the potential for other treatment (dental implant, if desired). This technique also allows the patient to maintain the height and form of their existing maxillary alveolar ridge.

Combining conventional and emerging technologies in conservative prosthetic replacement in the aesthetic zone: Case Series ReportPresenter: Dr. Si (Cindy) Shi, (AEGD resident)

When placement of implants is not the ideal treatment e.g. requiring extensive grafting, more conservative treatment plan options are explored. Although the concept of restoring multi-unit bridges with conventional porcelain fused to metal (PFM) is well defined in managing patients in fixed partial dentures (FPD), there appears to be a lack of information regarding the combined use of conventional and emerging technologies in conservative replacement in the aesthetic zone with a vertical defect due to dental trauma. This presentation illustrates an original approach in effective clinical management of such cases with the use of porcelain and zirconia combined ZirPlus. This procedure allows for conservative preparations of abutment teeth in long spanning bridge restorations in highly aesthetic zones (i.e. #7-8-9 bridge) and missing tooth #8 with a vertical defect). Patient also presented with rotated lateral incisor (tooth #7). This technique more importantly allows for “pink porcelain” addition to obscure the defect.

Biomechanically enhanced stabilization of definitive removable appliance” case seriesPresenters: Dr. Heather Hastings and Dr. Shifat Hossain (AEGD residents)

This presentation illustrates an alternative to conventional denture or partial denture therapy to aid as a cost-effective substitute to enhance stabilization as compared to an implant retained overdenture. This procedure allows for greater retention of a removable appliance while avoiding invasive surgery that is needed for implant overdentures. This technique most importantly better aids in stabilization of a traditional cast partial allowing for better patient ease and comfort during speaking and eating.

These experiences have such positive phenomenal impact emotionally and professionally on our emerging super

generalists. Experiences such as these help promote awareness of the NYU Langone AEGD Program.

These presentations were also used to help drive regional day educational activity and resident recruitment at our site, being patterned after the information/curriculum that was shared at our last Faculty Development Conference regarding patient centered best practice protocols being utilized in translating clinical activity into best outcome dentistry and scholarly pursuits.

nYu langone dental medicine orthodontics program at nYhop research sYmposium

The NYU Langone Dental Medicine Orthodontic and Dentofacial Orthopedics Program, led by Program Director and Chair, Dr. Laurance Jerrold, participated in the 2nd Annual NYHOP Research Symposium on June 5, 2018. The event was hosted by the New York County Dental Society. NYHOP stands for New York Hospital Orthodontic Programs, a project that was developed and initiated by Dr. Jerrold. This year’s event was attended by five of the seven hospital based orthodontic programs/fellowships in NYC: NYU Langone (Brooklyn), Maimonides (Brooklyn), Bronx Lebanon, Montefiore, and St. Barnabas (all in the Bronx) and two orthodontic fellowship programs, NYU craniofacial program in Manhattan and the Jacobi orthognathic fellowship in the Bronx. Approximately 20 residents graduate from these programs annually. NYHOP gives these residents the opportunity, at the end of their graduating year, to highlight their program and their supporting institution, by presenting their research to one another in a formal symposium setting.
