I am a Genealogy Widow. It’s similar to being a Football Widow without the beer and buffalo wings. I am married to a man who is obsessed with his ancestors. He loves digging through old records at county court houses, old family pictures and ex-ploring old cemeteries. Thank good-ness he hasn’t started actually digging there. A few years ago on a trip to Virgina City, Montana with my mom, he took all kinds of pictures of head-stones at the old Boot Hill Cemetery.

Several of my father’s relatives are buried there. When Jim sent a ‘family picture’, my sister thought me stand-ing among a bunch of headstones wasn’t exactly a “Wish you were here” moment. At fi rst I thought Jim was dealing with adoption issues and needed to fi nd his roots. I have since met other adoptees that were inter-ested in just a branch, not the whole tree. (We’re talking Family Trees.) I was very glad when it became popu-lar to refer to genealogy as Family History. It was a little embarrassing when I would have to explain the difference between genealogy and gynecology, that my husband was not a woman’s doctor. It’s so much easier to tell people he’s Tech Support and the Webmaster for a family history computer program. Jim will tell you that a Professional Genealogist is one who will trace your family tree as far back as your money goes. There may

be extra fees for keeping quiet about what is found.

Every once in awhile he’ll come up with a bumper sticker slogan. His fa-vorite is “Genealogists Are Real Heir Heads.”

When we were fi rst married Mr. Volunteer had an old leather suitcase fi lled with his pedigree charts. Then he went to a two-drawer fi le cabinet, then a four drawer. Thank goodness for modern technology. His thousands and thousands of names now fi t on fi les on his computer. When the house burns, I won’t be dragging out the cabinets. He assures me all informa-tion is stored in back up fi les on an external hard drive. It was a little unnerving the fi rst time he started shouting, “I found her! I found her!” Instead of the love of his life, it was a long lost grandmother who had changed her name when she eloped and didn’t want her father to fi nd her.

It’s nice to know the competition, women at least 100 years old, dead and buried.

We had a friend a few years ago who asked Jim to trace their line. Their son was getting stationed in Guam and they needed to tell him the families he couldn’t date girls from. They didn’t want him dating his cous-ins. Nothing like a little background check when the guys start coming around to date your daughter. Being a professional genealogist does have its advantage.

A few years ago Mr. Volunteer dis-covered we were 10th cousins once re-moved. At the time we were hav-ing a little spat and I thought for sure this would be grounds for an annul-ment. But the Bishop assured me that after 36 years of marriage and four children, the marriage was legal and binding. Well at least we know now what went wrong with the children.

NEWS FROM THE TOWER By Ann Votava

Annie WebProgram Director, Harbor Tower Village

The activity program at any Assisted Living or Retirement Community is an integral part of the overall experience of the resident and family. An activity program should include safety, guidance, independence and support to help residents to remain social and active within the community. Harbor Tower Village provides engaging activities and programs that stimulate the mind and body of the residents. Fitness programs, shopping, travel out into the community, guest speakers, social hour, full service hair salon, health screenings, and individual and family celebrations, mirror our mission of "bringing retirement to life!" Studies have shown that activities playa vital role in helping residents of all physical abilities live as fully as possible. Activities should be designed not only to honor resident preferences and needs, but also to engage body, mind and spirit. A mixture of physical activity, intellectual challenge, socialization and spirituality is essential for healthy active adults of all ages. We offer many interactive and varied activities including special visits from various local groups such as the girl scouts, boy scouts, students from local schools, members of NAS Whidbey Island Air Station, local authors, and Churches just to name a few. Here at Harbor Tower Village we welcome new ideas from all residents, their families, and the community. Please feel free to request a monthly activity calendar, and join us for any program that interests you.
