is pleased to wel-

come new Social

Studies teacher, Mr.

Dennis Hill. Mr. Hill

spent many years in the corporate world

before becoming a

teacher, but decided

he wanted to give something back and do what

he could to impact the next generation. He

has attended Georgia College in Milledgeville,

University of Georgia in Athens, and Valdosta

State University in Valdosta. While attending

these universities, he spent “many grueling

hours studying all things social studies.”

When asked what he likes most about teach-

ing, he replies, “I like the reward I get when

someone can take the knowledge I’ve helped

them attain and use it to better their lives”. He says that, so far, this school year has been

fantastic. “The school facilities are top-notch,

the staff is great and the students are fun and

eager to do well.” We would like to thank Mr.

Hill for coming to PHS. We look forward to a

great school year and many more to come!

On August 24th, the Lady Hornets began

on defense against the Mitchell County

Eagles. It started out slowly with their

offense getting nine points in the top of

the first. Lady Hornets were getting

worried. Three outs and PHS was ready to go. The Hornets were thinking,

“We’re at bat, and we’re determined to

stay at bat until we can at least get

ahead.” Sadly, the Hornet offense was

still a bit shaky. PHS scored two runs

and then went back on the field. PHS was

determined not to let Mitchell score.

They got two runs, and the Hornets were

back at bat with Pelham still behind two

to nine in the top of the second inning.

The Lady Hornets showed their determi-

nation by making an outstanding come-

back in the bottom of the second. The Hornets began the third inning ahead

fifteen to nine, but allowed the Lady

Eagles to finish the third with eleven

points. The Lady Hornets in the dugout

were starting to get worried. It was

getting down to the nitty gritty, but

perseverance and determination paid off in the end. The MIGHTY Lady Hornets

won twenty-five to eleven. The Lady

Hornets play an away game against

Seminole on August 30th. Go Hornets!

Ms. Terri Watt is the new nurse at

Pelham High School. She has always

wanted to be a nurse because she

wanted to follow in her mother’s

footsteps. She attended Medical Center

of Central Georgia School of Nursing and the Macon Hospital Diploma

Program. She has five children and ten

grandchildren. She chose this school

district because her children attended

school here, and she likes the school

system. She enjoys reading, visiting

her children and grandchildren, and

being active in her church. In five

years she sees herself working at

Pelham City Schools, traveling, and

spending part of her summer out west.

Hornets Destroy Baconton On August 19, 2011 the Pelham Hornets

traveled to Camilla to take on the Bacon-

ton Blazers. This is an annual rivalry

game called the Civil War North versus

South. The game kicked off with Blaz-

ers’ ball first, but the Hornets defense shut them down. That was the story of

the night, the Hornets defense. The

defense held the Blazers to negative 9

yards, and only one score the entire

night. Pelham’s offense fed

off the energy of the de-

fense and put 33 points on

the scoreboard. These

touchdown scores came

from Brandon Smith, Ne-

ville Thompson, Desmond

Parker, and two by Denzel Jackson. The

next victims of the Hornets will be the

Thomasville Bulldogs on September 2,

2011 at The Hornets’ Nest, so come out

and support the Hornets when they play

their first home game against the Thom-asville Bulldogs on Friday, September

2nd.

Friday August 19th the Pelham Marching

Hornets went out and showed the public

for the first time their full halftime show.

They played House of the Rising Sun by The Animals, Vehicle by Ides of March, but

what amazed the audience the most was

hearing the latest hit Forget You by Cee lo

Green. The band also played a variety of

well-known favorites like the 80’s classic

Smoke on the Water, Bone Crusher, and

the drumline’s favorite, Lima Bean. The

band kept the crowd upbeat during the

entire game by yelling and cheering on the

PHS Hornets as they faced the Baconton

Blazers. During the half time show, the

band got to show off two of its most talent-ed trumpet players, Harli Singleton and

Cullen Edrwards. They both played their

own solo in the show. Cullen has had

multiple solos in past shows, but this was

Harli’s first, and the entire band was proud

of their gifted sophomore. Both have

received many compliments on their per-

formances. The drill team showed much

enthusiasm on the field. They add a

certain flash to the band’s music. They

show radiance and grace with every step

and flag routine. They gave a riveting

performance at the first game. As the season runs its course, the PHS football

team and fans will have the Marching

Hornets right beside them cheering every

yardline along the way.
