JULY—DECEMBER 2016 ---FINANCIAL UPDATE The first six months of this fiscal year (July—December 2016) ended with the Parish having an operating income surplus of $57,731.54. Approximately $20,000.00 of this amount will be paid out in January/February for bills incurred in November/December. The good news is that, if there are no major emergency expenses during the next six months, we expect the Parish to end the fiscal year (July 2016—June 2017) with a positive operating result.

A comparison between this year and last year’s six month results is not very helpful because the school financials are included in last year’s report. However, two items of note:

• on the revenue side, total Parish contributions are down by approximately $27,500.00.

• on the expense side, almost all of the $26,000.00 listed as Continuing Education expense is actually unemployment compensation costs related to the school closing.

We thank you for your financial support and hope that you will continue to support the Parish during the next six months as we continue to make much needed repairs. During February/March we hope to announce a schedule for tuckpointing repairs to the Church entrance and the re-plastering and painting of the Church interior. If you have any questions about this report, please contact Regis Trenda at 312-952-4705. Reverend Michael McMahon Regis Trenda Pastor Chairperson- Finance Committee

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION By the early 1950s some scholars were calling for the restoration of Communion of the faithful on Good Friday, since by then only a priest received, consuming the host from the Holy Thursday repository. In 1955 the new Good Friday liturgy was timed to begin at three o’clock everywhere, and included the option of Holy Communion, but without the Precious Blood that had originally been part of the liturgy. Today, there is increasing debate among theologians. Some feel that it would be better to fast from the Eucharist on Good Friday, focusing on the mystery of the cross and highlighting the Easter Communion. Others say that this Communion infuses the sadness of the day with awareness of Christ’s victory. It is not a day of mourning, of course, and the Passion according to John grounds the liturgy in a sense of Christ’s victory over death and the triumph of the cross. The tradition is rich and varied, and we are still in the early stages of recovering an ancient way of doing things. Why do we call the day “good”? The English and Dutch languages share this name, and its origin stems from the name “God’s Friday.” The traditional name for the day in Latin is Feria VI in Parasceve, which translates as “The Sixth Day of the Week of Preparation.” Other languages make do with “Holy Friday.” In another part of England, as in Denmark, the people used to call it “Long Friday,” a good description for a quiet day without work and no chance for play or a good meal! —Rev. Formation & Education From The Desk Of Kari Leaf

I shared in my bulletin article a few weeks ago that I was reading the book, Behold the Mystery: A Deeper Understanding of the Catholic Mass by Mark Hart. The chapter I am currently reading is about understanding Catholic Tradition. In the chapter it talks about sacramentals & symbols, posture, vessels, etc. One thing that I found intriguing was the section on Priestly Vestments. In the book it says:

The alb, derived from albus (the Latin word for “white”), has been common use as a liturgical garment since the later part of the fourth century. The original symbolism was direct reference to the seamless white garment that Christ wore during his passion. Furthermore, it has always been used as a means to remind the liturgical celebrant that his role at that moment is in persona Christi (“in the person of Christ”). As the priest takes the white garment and very simply covers his daily clothing, the vestment reminds him that he is no longer acting on his own accord.

The chasuble (from the Latin for “hooded cloak”) is the colored sleeveless garment worn over the alb. The chasuble’s color varies according to the liturgical season or feast day and is designed not as a fashion statement but as a statement of office and of function as celebrant of the Mass. Yes, there are many things that are a part of a Catholic Mass that we don’t always understand or see. But through these traditions, there is much meaning and beauty behind them. Just because you may have been Catholic your whole life, doesn’t mean you should ever stop learning about our rich traditions, or about Jesus Christ himself. Make yourself a life-long learner of God. Blessings to you, Mrs. Kari Leaf Director of Religious Education [email protected]/ (847) 395-0246 Events Coming Up in RE:

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION 'The St Peter’s Eucharistic Adoration program, in its current format, has been going on since 2000. Due to the decreasing numbers of adorers, the program is being discontinued. The last day for Eucharistic Adoration is Tuesday, February 14. Eucharistic Adoration varies greatly from parish to parish and alternate forms of Eucharistic Adoration, that would be more suitable to St Peters, are being considered. Many thanks to those who have supported this program over the years.'
