    The Chimes

Being EpiscopalianThe Feast of the Presentation of Jesus athe Temple, also known as the Feast ofhe purification and Candlemas, iselebrated on February 2, toommemorate the presentation of Jesusnd the purification of Mary in theerusalem Temple forty days after Jesusirth According to Jewish law, afterhildbirth a woman must go to theemple to offer two turtle-doves or two

pigeons, one for a burnt-offering and thether for a sin-offering: and the priesthall make atonement on her behalf, andhe shall be clean (Leviticus 12:8). INhe Gospel of Luke, the presentation ofesus at the temple was also the occasionf Jesus meeting with Saint Simeon the

Righteous, who took him in his armsnd praised God, saying, My eyes haveeen you salvation (luke 2:30). Thislessing by Simeon is the basis for the

canticle Nunc dimitti (p. 120, BCP). Whenthe celebration of this feast wasintroduced in Rome in the seventhcentury, it included a procession withcandles and the singing of the Nuncdimittis which is why this feast alsobecame known as Candlemas. - from

Candlemas Day was also the day whesome cultures predicted weather patteFarmers believed that the remainder owinter would be the opposite of whatthe weather was like on Candlemas DAn old English song goes:

If Candlemas be fair and bright,

    Come winter, have another flight;

If Candlemas bring clouds and rain,Go winter, and come not again.

Thus if the sun cast a shadow onCandlemas day, more winter was on tway; if there was no shadow, winter wthought to be ending soon. This practled to the folklore behind "GroundhogDay," which falls on Candlemas Day.

    Serving Others

Some things never change. The world tends to

recognize the unique and the loud, the rich and the

self-serving; not those who do ordinary things

    extraordinarily well.

As Christians we are called to love God, be of

service to others, help those in need and love our

neighbor. Not anything really unusual or difficult,

but ordinary acts that do not receive a great deal of

recognition by the media or society as a whole.

I like to think most of us understand the call

to love God and our neighbor. But, it seems we all

tend to have difficulty serving others.

A St. Johns parishioner, who lives alone, was

in the hospital last week. Without fanfare and

publicity a group of her friends in Christ visited her

in the hospital, went to her home and cleaned,

washed dishes and clothes and made the home ready

for her return. When she returned home they

brought her food so she would not immediately need

    to cook.

These are ordinary acts done extraordinarily

well. These are the acts Jesus talks about when he

told us to care for the sick, feed the hungry and

    the poor.

Each of us is called to the service of other

our families, schools, communities and churches

need for service is usually right in front of us, if only look. They are the local food pantry, meals

wheels, hospital volunteers, school mentors, pris

visitorsthe list goes on. Service to others is

participating in the choir, alter guild, administra

staff , Vestry and so many other areas of our chu

Giving of our treasures for the good of ot

is always a needed service. We live in a society w

monies are necessary to pay utility bills, rent,

medical bills; and purchase food and clothing.

I am confident our ladies of last weekperformed the acts Jesus was talking about whe

said in doing these things for others we are doin

them for him; and surely they have earned the t

Good and Faithful Servant. Being a servant to

others requires giving of ourselves, and not bein

    self-serving and boastful.

    Ordinary people, doing ordinary things,

extraordinary way. No fanfare, no publicity, jus

    sacrificial giving of themselves.

Recipe of the MonthPARMESAN CHEESE BITES1 cup flour2/3 cup grated Parmesan Cheese (if doubling double, use 1 1/2 cups)1/4 tsp. Cayenne pepper or crushed red pepper flakes or a combo of both1/2 cup butter, cut up2 TBSP. milk

Combine flour, grated cheese and cayenne in medium bowl. Cut in cold butter w

a pastry blender or two forks until crumbly. Add milk and work mixture with your hands or 3 minutes until you can shape into two logs. Wrap in plastic wrap and then put in anairtight container and chill several hours or overnight. When ready to bake, cut into 1/4 inch slices and place on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake a350 degrees for 12 to 15 minutes, until lightly browned. Cool on a wire rack.

Dough cuts better when cold, so put uncooked dough back in the refrigeratorbetween batches.

Shred your own cheese. It is stickier and blends better than pre-shredded.Baked cheese bites may be stored in airtight container in the refrigerator for 1 week.Unbaked dough may be stored in the refrigerator for 1 week or in the freezer for 1 month.(from Southern Living Magazine)Bobbie Sumerlin

    St. John Episcopal Church Choir

The St. Johns Choir has been singing

nthems and assisting with hymns and

ervice music during the worship services

ince the spring of 2005. In 2008 the

    Lenten Evensong services featured the

discussion and the performance of a

Lenten anthem by the choir in addition to

heir regular Sunday worship music. An

rgan was donated to St. Johns in 2010.

Despite limited rehearsal time, the choir

    has consistently presented quality sacred

horal music to aid in the worship services.
