A life lesson from long ago taught me the importance of unique. When struggling to grow a program, a wise mentor encouraged me to look for the unique factor in every creative moment. The challenge was to bring something fresh to every ministry. Kennon Callahan, a church growth consultant, explains unique this way: “What ministry or value would cease to be if your church closed their doors tonight?” It’s a question that brings focus to all we should be as church.

Unique. What is it that separates us from a dozen other churches found inside the loop? What makes us special? What happens in our community of faith that attracts people to join us? What description comes to our lips when we explain our church to a visitor? What fans the flame of faith? It’s the way God made me, to celebrate the unique. Don’t get me wrong; I like tradition and routine as much as the next person, but I don’t want to consider life (and church) without a little zest of unique, every now and then. Unique keeps our living (and our faith) from becoming bland. These days, when many around us seek to make the church more like the world, we might do well to major on making the church a unique place to encounter God. This weekend offers two unique opportunities: (1) Come hear about the Christian Church Foundation and how we can endow legacy/permanent gifts to continue ministry long after our lives, and (2) we are hosting a remembrance of the Tutsi genocide on Sunday afternoon at 4. Folks currently attending our church and enrolled in the CLC are among the families directly affected by that tragedy. They have found a welcome place with us. We will continue to look for additional unique ways to welcome others. It’s a very unique why.

O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his

steadfast love endures forever: Psalms 107:1 I have so much to be thankful for! Many blessings have come my way over the years but

none compare to the gift of you; #ILoveMyChurch! The Sunday before last, we witnessed our youth lead us in worship, we celebrated seven high school seniors, and had a remarkable lunch. Thank you, CHURCH, for being so wonderful! Saturday, I graduated from Brite with my Master of Divinity. Sunday, I was overwhelmed by the many gifts and words of support from an amazing church… And the list goes on! Heather has accepted a teaching position at Hillander, starting in the Fall, as an art teacher. Over the past five years, I have been surrounded by so many remarkable people who are givers of the steadfast love of God; the past few weeks have been a reminder of the goodness of God. But if we are honest, the challenge is not about being thankful in the midst of the good. The challenge, for people of faith, is to find new ways to share the goodness of God, even in moments of darkness. We are called to believe in the steadfast love of God by being doers of love. How are you sharing love? It starts with being thankful and continues by giving back to the world what you have been given. It is about finding a way to share God’s love by being God’s love. Give thanks to the Lord… For he is good!

Rubber bands come in different sizes and different colors and different shapes, but they all work on the same principle. Rubber bands must be stretched to be effective.

Like rubber bands, our personalities, talents, and gifts are different. We are also not effective unless we are stretched. If you’re not stretching in your own personal life, whether it is your walk with God, in your job, in your home, then how are you going to be able to be effective for God.

Every person who has ever achieved anything has stretched for it. There’s no such thing as a self-made person; there’s no such thing as a person who comes into the world fully equipped for success. Every person who has ever made it to the top, every person who has achieved anything for God, every person who has been effective, has learned to stretch.

I want to challenge you to “stretch”. So get ready, because if we are going to stretch and I do believe you want to, we must step outside of our box. So here is one way I’m challenging you to stretch……My prayer is that you will take the challenge.

VBS is June 18-21. It is in the evening, 5:30-8:30. Our theme this year is Hero Central: Discover Your Strength in God!. The children will learn through various Bible Stories and activities that God’s heroes have heart, courage, wisdom and hope.

VBS is a month away and as you are reading this we already have 100 children pre-registered and we still have several weeks to go. We have in place 60+ volunteers. We have volunteers that will be teaching Bible stories, doing arts and crafts, games, music, food, taking pictures, leading children from place to place and helping where ever needed.

We have people who are stretching, and I mean really stretching because we are reaching out to the children in our community, inviting them to come and join us as we help them to know the importance of being a part of a community of faith, a community that shares, cares for others, learns new things and shares that new knowledge. So here’s my challenge……..if you are not already doing one of the activities mentioned above I challenge you to stretch, come and be a warm body, come and be the hands and feet of Christ. Take in the sights and sounds (and there will be a lot to see and hear) that will take place during the week. There is a place for everyone to serve at VBS no matter what your age or what gifts and talents you have to share.

By S-T-R-E-T-C-H-I-N-G we can lead others to know Jesus Christ. By S-T-R-E-T-C-H-I-N-G we can grow in our relationship with Jesus Christ. Are you willing to do a little S-T-R-E-T-C-H-I-N-G? I can’t wait to hear from you!

In loving partnership,

Ponderings… Rev. Paula Brooks Associate Minister
