We will only change when the pain of staying the same becomes greater than the pain of changing.

Author Unknown

T he above-mentioned quotation can be found at the bottom of every email I receive from my friend and colleague, Meg Dissinger. It

seemed a fitting statement to use in this issue of the Quarterly dedicated to the influences of the planet of change, Uranus.

The life changes that Uranus brings are often described as abrupt, sudden, disruptive, drastic, or erratic. They tend to be situations that shake our life up and force us to do things differently. Frequently there is a human agency, an individual involved as a catalyst for that change.

Some of us embrace changes with enthusiastic anticipation. Others do so kicking and screaming. For the most part; however, there is always some pain associated with change. The Church of Light’s attitude toward pain differs from those faiths that see pain as the punishment of an avenging deity. For us, pain is informative and educational. Its normal function is to inform us when we are failing in some measure to fully adapt to an ever-changing environment. Frequently in life it is our discomfort that moti-vates us to action.

For some reason, the turning of the last page of the calendar for the year motivates many of us to contemplate the changes we want to initiate in the coming year. We commence the year with resolutions to change those habits that are not serving us well and possibly manifesting with painful consequences in our lives. The force to initiate and maintain those changes is dependant upon a properly directed will.

The Western Mystery Tradition emphasizes the importance of the proper use of the “will,” and perhaps nowhere is this more apparent than in the admonitions found in The Sacred Tarot. Will-power is developed when we determine a course of action and resolutely set about towards its accomplishment. Once we set about to accomplish something, obsta-cles and deterrents frequently arise to test our resolve. Our will is devel-oped when we do not allow these difficulties to distract us from our course. Optimism, one of the expressions of Jupiter, is a natural antidote to Uranus and the nervous apprehension it stimulates in the face of im-pending changes. We must remain optimistic that we can not only initiate changes, but that through God’s help they can be brought to successful completion.

As we commence the New Year, let us optimistically embrace change. Both the changes we seek to establish and the unexpected changes that catch us off guard; but nevertheless, ultimately contribute to our growth.

are not able to reach the highest spiritual states. Never-theless, there is penetration, intuition, and occult insight.”

In Greek mythology, Uranus was Ouranos, or “Father Sky,” both son and spouse of Gaia or “Mother Earth.” His Roman equivalent was Caelus, the god of sky. Gaia con-spired with Kronos (Saturn), their youngest son, to de-pose Ouranos. Using a sickle that his mother fashioned out of flint, Kronos ambushed his sleeping father and cas-trated him, tossing his genitals into the sea. Aphrodite (Venus) was born from the foam created by his discarded testicles. Bode’s argument for naming this planet Uranus was based on the pattern that Saturn’s position was next in line after his son Jupiter. It seemed fitting that Uranus, father of Saturn and grandfather to Jupiter, should fall next in sequence.

In Hermetic astrology, Uranus governs the Individualistic Urges of the soul which seek expression through being unique and radically different. These urges for uniqueness express best through originality. Dominant Uranus per-sonalities are often trendsetters, inventors, or social re-formers. Harmonious expressions of Uranus can be found in the vocabulary-builders in the sidebar titled Positive Uranus Traits.

The moons of Uranus travel in a reverse direction to those of the other planets, except Neptune. Therefore, the person in whose chart Uranus is prominent tends to take a contrary attitude, sometimes radically departing from the “status quo.” Eccentricity is considered to be the worst expression of the drive for individualism. The Uranian individual can be quirky, unconventional, or even radical in their self expression. Additional vocabulary for a discordant Uranus can be found in the sidebar under Negative Uranus Traits.

In a horoscope, the house in which Uranus falls is said to be subject to eccentricity and drastic change. This tends to be an area of our lives in which we function unconven-tionally or outside the norm. Sometimes this can be an arena for dramatic shifts prompted by a human agent.

Uranus spends seven years in each sign of the zodiac, taking 84 years to complete an entire cycle. Like the other two “outer planets,” Neptune and Pluto, Uranus’ influence in each sign tends to take on a generational effect. Although unknown in classical astrology, Uranus was quickly assigned to be the co-ruler (with Saturn) of humanistic Aquarius, where Uranus transited from 1912 – 1919, and again in 1996 – 2003. Because of the similarity of nature, Uranus is termed to be at “Home” in Aquarius.

Alchemical Uranus

“Such experiences in lower forms of life built into the astral body of man the Individualistic thought-elements, closely allied to the intellectual thought-elements, but mapped in the birth-chart by the planet Uranus. These are the source of independence, originality, inven-tiveness, and unconventionality. Most successful lawyers, inventors, moving picture stars, astrologers, music conductors, and others who must use originality in their work, have the Individualistic thought-elements prominent in their stellar bodies.

Thinking about independence, inventions, astrology, new ideas and radical departures from established custom brings into the life both the advantages and the disadvantages that come, always either directly or indirectly through human agency, suddenly, unexpectedly and often abruptly, taking away an old, or bringing a new acquaintance, and a radical change either in the physical or mental life.”

Alchemical Meditation

I, (your name here), am a brilliant and creative adventurer. I use my original thinking to devise new ways to bring about positive change in my world. Even if I do not view myself as an inventor, I recognize the ways in which I do things uniquely and differently from oth-ers.

Every day I discover new ways to harness the powers of my intuition and utilize these in-sights as a catalyst for my personal growth. As I grow personally, the people around me grow and change as well.

I, (your name here), am ever alert to any tendencies that I may have to be rebellious or authority-oppositional. I replace these traits with a kindly respect for others and the new habit system of winning others over, not by argument, but by goodwill and increased abil-ity in articulating my ideas.

I easily release my apprehension and nervous tension about the future and embrace the concept of a benevolent deific presence that brings only good into my life.

So shall it be!

Dominant Uranus Personality

Jacque Cousteau

“What is a scientist after all? It is a curious man looking through a keyhole, the keyhole of nature, trying to know what's going on.”

- Jacques Cousteau (1910 – 1997)

T he Uranus person is at his or her best when engaged in some unusual pursuit. They are naturally curious, inven-

tive, unconventional, and always enthusiastic about some type of social reform. Their best quality is originality, which makes them drawn to adventure and discovery both in the world and the realm of ideas. They have the special ability to be catalysts for change, sparking widespread societal reforms.

Explorer, filmmaker, oceanographer, and ecologist are just a few of the titles that could be used to describe the career of Jacques Cousteau. Upon his death in 1997, Cousteau's legacy

included more than 50 books, 120 television documentaries, and a 300,000 member environmental protection foundation.

Jacques-Yves Cousteau was born to Daniel and Élisabeth Cous-teau on June 11, 1910, at 1:06 p.m., in the commune of Saint-André-de-Cubzac in south-western France. With a weak and discordant Sun, Cousteau was a sickly child. His doctors ad-vised him not to participate in any strenuous activity. However, he learned to swim and soon developed a profound love for the sea. The young Cousteau also had an early fascination with invention. By age 11, he had built a model of a marine crane. Rebellious and bored at school, Cousteau was expelled from high school for breaking 17 of the school's windows.

In 1936, Cousteau was given a pair of underwater diving gog-gles. He was so impressed with what he could see beneath the

ocean’s surface that he immediately set about designing the aqua-lung, a device that would allow humans to breathe underwater. After many delays due to the war effort, his invention, the self-contained underwater breathing apparatus (scuba), was completed in 1942. During World War II, Cousteau was a gunnery officer and was awarded the prestigious Legion d'Honneur for his work with the French resistance against German occupation. Cousteau resigned from the navy in 1957 with the rank of lieu-tenant commander. He would later become director of the Oceanographic Museum in Monaco.

His dominant planet is Uranus, the indicator of social-reformers, in his fourth house of environment. Cousteau was influential in raising awareness of ecology and the inter-connectedness of the world’s oceans. He was instrumental in halting the dumping of French atomic waste into the Mediterra-nean Sea and was a part of the first World Oceanic Congress in

1959. Captain Cousteau was successful in using television (another invention ruled by Uranus) to enlighten the public by exposing the irreversible effects of environmental destruction ushering in the age of environmental awareness. He was

awarded a Gold Medal from the National Geographic Society in 1961 at an event hosted by President John F. Kennedy. From 1968 to 1976, home viewers were introduced to the world of whales, sharks, dolphins, coral reefs, and sunken treasure through The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau. His ecologi-cal activism led to his appearance on the March 1960 cover of Time magazine.

As to be expected, Cousteau had an unconventional family life. On July 12, 1937, he married Simone Melchior. They had two sons, Jean-Michel born May 6, 1938 and Philippe born December 30, 1940. His sons, Jean-Michel and Philippe, were frequently featured alongside their father on the Calypso on the television

series. Philippe died in a maritime accident in 1979. He also had two children with his mistress, Francine Triplet, a Daughter Diane (1980) and a son Pierre-Yves (born 1982). He would marry Francine Triplet in 1991, one year after the death of wife, Simone Melchior, of cancer.

On January 11, 1996, due to unknown causes, the Calypso sank in Singapore harbor signaling an end of an era. A year and a half later on June 25, 1997, Cousteau was to die of heart failure in Paris. He had spent a lifetime exploring and filming the underwa-ter world that he dubbed “The Blue Continent”.

vated by a desire to overcome environmental obstacles and garner victory. It is sometimes an exhausting energy, though, as the individual with a prominent Uranus may always be seeking new experiences, regardless of the effect upon the old, estab-lished order.

“The old, established order” is anathema to the Uranian soul, feeling as chains to its unconventional consciousness. The Uranian sort is constantly seeking new environs, but it is im-portant to recall that new is not always better. In fact, often-times the new way proves out to be less effective than the old way over time. Newness carries with it a certain excitement, like a new love affair and all of the butterflies which accompany it. But it forsakes the steadfastness of strategies which have worked over time and sacrifices the deeper intimacy which comes with long-established relationships.

Moderating the intense, relentless, craving for new experi-ence which is so indicative of the Uranian type falls to the juris-diction of Jupiter in The Church of Light’s Alchemical scheme. Jupiter, the ruler of religion, has much to do with establishing and maintaining order and cohesiveness, precepts that the Uranian soul despises. However, Jupiter bears his place at the celestial table too, for it is through our faith in a Higher Power that we can sometimes accept the shortcomings that life inevi-tably brings, and refrain from resorting to more radical reac-

tions. Moderating our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors thusly leads to a more stable, enduring pattern of living.

Being ever the iconoclast can also be a very lonely and even tragic role to play in life. While it may at times be abso-lutely necessary to stand alone, even against forces and num-bers greater than our own, it is important to pick such battles carefully. For a quick glance through history will reveal that standing up for one’s beliefs against the tyranny of a more pow-erful order is never looked upon well by those in control, and the backlash of such actions can be harsh and cruel. Consider, for example, Martin Luther King, Jr., or Jesus Christ. Both ulti-mately had truly amazing effects upon the global consciousness of the world. However, both did so at great cost to themselves and their loved ones. While their missions stand as great testa-ments to the strength and dignity of the human spirit, at the same time, it is important to acknowledge the sacrifice which their martyrdom entailed.

Thus, perhaps a more effective approach in most cases towards the Uranian penchant for newness and excitement is to weigh the benefits and consequences of such actions and balance these intense rebellious desires against the more en-during, stable behaviors associated with his alchemical antidote, Jupiter. As with all alchemical pairs, by seeking a happy medium between the opposing energies, the greatest result can be achieved.

Elbert Benjamine (AKA C. C. Zain) was perhaps the most prolific astrological author in the first half of the 20th Century. Between the years 1915 – 1952, he wrote thousands of articles and numerous books, such as Astrological Lore of All Ages, Begin-ner’s Horoscope Maker and Reader, How to Select a Vocation,

Body Disease and its Stellar Treatment, and more. Under the aegis of The Brotherhood of Light/Church of Light and using the nom-de-plume of C. C. Zain, he authored the 24 books that comprise the 21 Brotherhood of Light Lessons. His astrological system, for which he coined the term “Hermetic,” combined ancient prac-tice, contemporary mathematics, and an active research depart-ment. His work would impact future generations of astrological notables, such as Doris Chase Doane, Lynne Palmer and Lois Rodden.

In this full-day workshop to be held in Chicago, June 12, 2020, and sponsored by The Friends of Astrology, Christopher Gibson will present three astrological techniques that are distinctive to the Hermetic System of Astrology. Beginning with Astrodynes, we will explore the unique system of quantifying power for each of the planets, signs, houses, and aspects in an astrological chart. Special attention will be given to identifying the “conditioning” energy (harmony or discord) present in each one of these fac-tors. The Hermetic System of Progressions combines Major, Minor and Transit reinforcements as a predictive tool for deter-mining when and what type of events will happen. The program will culminate with the practice of “Alchemy,” a transformative tool used for correcting the discords found in a chart in order to channel one’s energies in the most constructive direction. Each section will build upon the knowledge gained in the previous section.

Christopher Gibson began his astrology and tarot studies in 1968 and has worked as a professional astrologer with an international clientele since 1977. Christopher’s background is with the

Church of Light in which he is a Hermetician and Or-dained Minister. He has served on the board of Di-rectors of the Church of Light since 1978 in varying capacities as president, vice-president, and corporate secretary.

Christopher has held mem-berships with the Association for Astrological Networking, American Federation of As-trologers, The National Council for Geocosmic Re-search, and Professional Astrologers Incorporated.

He is a Certified Grand Master of the Tarot with the American Tarot Association.

He has been a contributing writer for Gnosis magazine, the Church of Light Quarterly and Starscrolls, a monthly astrological calendar. He currently teaches astrology, tarot, and alchemy at Church of Light Headquarters in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Does the CofL Require Students to Hand Calculate a Birth Chart to Become a Hermetician?

The short answer is NO.

However, for those students interested in learning to do the math, the Church of Light sells a book that will be helpful in this task. It is authored by Alan Curthoys, long-time Church of Light member, mentor and current Honorary Director. It is titled Astrological Calculation Using a Hand Held Calculator and sells for $9.95 (REF 10). Three other excellent books are:

Dennis Sutton’s How to Construct the Natal Horoscope - $13.95 (REF 69)

Lynne Palmer’s ABC Chart Erection - $15.00 (REF1)

Katalin B. Williams and Janice M. Davis’s Constructing the Natal Horoscope - $10.00

Sponsorship Program

The Church of Light offers a Sponsorship Program for financially disadvantaged mem-bers. Sponsors agree to financially assist a member in their C of L studies by contribut-ing their membership fee, supplying lessons, and donating for the exam processing fee as the student studies the lessons and passes exams.

There are nineteen members currently en-rolled in the Sponsorship Program. Fourteen of those members are incarcerated. One member was recently paroled. One member is a quadriplegic. Three members are from Africa, one of which was recently employed and is now a contributing member.

To remain in the sponsorship program, an enrolled member must pass an exam once every six months with a grade of 75% or bet-ter. The next course is mailed only upon com-pletion of the previous course.

There are always more members wishing to be sponsored than we have sponsors. Cur-rently there are four persons on the waiting list. If you are interested in anonymously sponsoring a member in need, please contact our Membership Minister, Rev. Patrick Ram-sey at [email protected] , or call the office during our regular office hours. All contribu-tions to the Sponsorship Program are tax-deductible.

Tarot Correspondence—The Wheel

Expresses in the spiritual world, the active principle which vivifies all being. In the intellectual world, the governing authority.

In the physical world, good and evil fortune.

Uranus is the octave expression of Mercury, even as Arcanum X is the second decave of Arcanum I, ruled by Mercury. The unsexed quality of Uranus is depicted in Arcanum X by the two serpents in

equilibrium. Uranus transits one sign of the zodiac in about 7 years, and the whole zodiac, completing the circle through the 12 houses of a horoscope, in about 84 years. That is, it corresponds to perfec-tion of form in each department of life, its complete cycle coinciding with the present natural life of man. More than any other planet it gives sudden changes of fortune, either for good or for evil, and

sudden change of the mental viewpoint.

Remember, then, son of earth, that for power thou must will, that is, will strongly; thou must dare, and to dare with success thou shouldst know how to be silent until the moment of action. If the Wheel should appear in the prophetic signs of thy horoscope, know that to possess the Key of Power you must learn to will persistently only for what is good and true. And in order to maintain thyself upon the heights of life, shouldst thou reach them, thou must have learned how to sound with a look, and

without dizziness, the vastest depths.

Tarot Spread Example—The Yes or No Spread

The following question was asked: “Will my daughter be getting married in the near future?”

1. Distant Past—Four of Coins 2. Recent Past — King of Cups 3. Present—Arcanum XVIII, The Moon (reversed) 4. Near Future—Youth of Coins 5. Distant Future—Ace of Scepters

Tarot Spread Interpretation

1. The distant past of the matter is represented by the Four of Coins which is commonly interpreted as “money received from a partner.” The couple, having been together several years have joint property in common and may be consider-ing legally protecting themselves.

2. The recent past is pictured by the King of Cups, this can represent “a person ruled by the sign Cancer: mild, re-served, home-loving and pleasant. Right way up it denotes a Cancer man; reversed it indicates a Cancer woman.” As Cancer is the sign of home and family, this card can possibly indicate that the couple is starting to consider creating a family together.

3. The present of the matter inquired about is represented by Arcanum XVIII, The Moon (reversed). This card is generally interpreted as false friends, deceit and disappointments. Conflict or confusion could arise in the planning process over family expectations or interference, or perhaps through differences in religion or the type of ceremony desired.

4. Card number four represents the near future of the matter inquired about. Here we have the Youth of Coins which “signifies a person ruled by the sign Aquarius: witty, argu-mentative yet amiable, artistic, humanitarian and fond of refined society. Right way up it denotes an Aquarian man; reversed it indicates an Aquarian woman. The dominant idea is “I KNOW.” This could represent a minister or jus-

tice of the peace who eventually performs the wedding ceremony.

5. The final position in the “Yes or No” Spread indicates the distant future of the matter inquired about. Here we have the Ace of Scepters, which reads as “news of a business opportunity; its inner interpretation is ACTIVITY.” This card assures us that something will take place in the not too distant future.

SUMMARY The couple, after several years of relationship, and sharing eco-nomic resources, are possibly considering having a family. Al-though affection is indicated by the King of Cups, the two coins cards and single scepter represent an underlying concern of financial and legal protection as a family. The only major Ar-canum appearing in the spread is The Moon, Arcanum XVIII, reversed in the center position. This is an ominous card which could make the process of wedding planning unpleasant and fraught with hurt feelings and misgivings. For a brief period of time, it might bring out the worst qualities in the relationship, which could postpone the marriage. Chances are the couple will choose a private civil service to be followed later by a ceremony that includes family. By Christopher Gibson

OUR MISSION:

To promote Universal Welfare and the exaltation of humankind through the teaching and prac-tices of the Religion of the Stars as outlined in the writings of C.C. Zain.

GUIDING PRINCIPLES:

A loving Cosmic Intelligence, of which we are all a part, whose infinite goodness guides us through undeviating natural law.

A Divine Plan manifests through progressive evolution in which each soul has a unique and impor-tant role.

A soul is completely moral when to the maximum extent of its abilities it adheres to the universal moral code: Contribute Your Utmost to Universal Welfare.

The realization of the soul’s Mission and the attainment of Self-Conscious Immortality is the goal toward which each soul moves.

Love is the way to life. Unselfish Love alone makes immortality possible.

Through the proper exercise of one’s mentality using Directed Thinking and Induced Emotion, it is possible to control one’s own life and destiny, both here and hereafter.

Astrology is the Golden Key that unlocks the door to understanding the Soul’s true character and potential.

The safe development of extrasensory perception (Extension of Consciousness) is the best tool for realizing each individual’s mission in the Divine Plan and for verifying the survival of the soul after death of the physical body.

Religion is the sister of Science, and it evolves by incorporating new information as it is discovered and verified.

OUR VISION FOR THE 21ST CENTURY:

We are a powerful force for good and for spiritual enlightenment and expand the reach and ex-perience of our members because:

We provide reliable and verifiable information regarding the nature of the soul and its relationship to Deity and other life forms;

We seek out reliable and verifiable information regarding life on higher planes of existence, espe-cially in regard to the transition we call death and the nature of the next life;

We develop increasingly advanced tools and training in astrology, extrasensory perception, di-rected thinking and induced emotion toward the end of maximizing each person's happiness, use-fulness and spirituality;

We promote the importance of the four essential freedoms: Freedom from Want, Freedom from Fear, Freedom of Expression and Freedom of Religion;

We build a sense of community and spiritual purpose which uplifts and inspires our members to Contribute Their Utmost To Universal Welfare.
