The Compound Light Microscope
Length of a Paramecium
Pollen Grain at 1000XHow To:
1. Measure the diameter of the field of view of the picture. This can be in cm or if you want to convert to mm that is ok too. Draw the line you are using for this measurement on the picture itself.
dFOVPIC = 11.6 cm2. Draw a line for the target of the specimen. In this case, the diameter of the pollen (including spikes). Then measure it in the same units as you did for the dFOVPIC.
dpollen = 10.3 cm
3. Look up the dFOV for the magnification of the image. In this case, the picture is at 1000X. So dFOV1000X = 180 µm
4. Now build your magic square with your target quantity in the top right spot. Remember that the left side of the square is real, while the right side of the square is from your picture.
5. Next, Substitute your quantities from 1‐3 into the square WITH UNITS!. Then show the pic units cancelling out by crossing a line through them.
6. Plug the numbers in your calculator and show the final answer with units. Round off to no decimal places because our microscopes aren't that precise.
