“Success usually comes to those who are too busy to be looking for it.” - Henry David Thoreau

November is a busy time for the Lake Eustis Area Chamber of Commerce. Not only do we have our Monthly Breakfast on Nov. 13 but the Annual Community Service Awards and Gala is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 21 at the Eustis Community Center and the Annual Light Up Eustis Celebration will take place on Friday, Nov. 28 in Historic Downtown Eustis.

The Gala promises to be a great time this year. The theme Puttin’ On the Ritz: A Throwback to the Roaring 20s will be the back drop to a spectacular night that starts with a Casino Cocktail Hour from 5:30-7 p.m. The list of service award winners is impressive but, shhhhhhh – We aren’t telling who until the Gala!

This November we are also partnering with the Tavares Chamber of Commerce to bring our members the Inaugural Taste of Golden Triangle. This event will offer residents a chance to sample some of the area’s best food and visit with some top-notch businesses. The Taste will be held Nov. 13 at the Eustis Elks Lodge in Tavares. Tickets are only $20 in advance, and are on sale now at the Chamber office.

Yes, November is a busy month at the Lake Eustis Area Chamber of Commerce and we hope it is filled with some great successes for everyone!

[ PROJECT MANAGEMENT ] By Joyce Fabian, MBA, PMP

Do you hate attending meetings? Are most meetings a waste of your time? During the course of a project, project managers hold and attend many meetings, both in person and virtually. These meetings may include a kick-off meeting, weekly status meetings, monthly steering committee meetings, risk review board meetings, change control board meetings, and a lessons learned meeting, to name just a few!

While running a meeting, we should all be very cognizant of the cost to the company for each person sitting in the room for the specified amount of time. Meetings are expensive, so we should strive to make them as effective as possible, every time we run one.

Here are some tips to help you run your meetings more effectively:• Determine if a meeting is really necessary• Define purpose and intended outcom• Determine required attendees• Send meeting invitations with agenda• Assign a facilitator or note-taker

• Prepare handouts and visual aids• Make logistical arrangements for room/equipment/food/

drink• Start and end on time• Introduce people and build relationships• State ground rules for questions and electronic

devices, etc.• Re-state purpose of the meeting• Review agenda• Stay on topic and ensure important items are discussed• Document action items with names and due dates• Summarize decisions and action items• Decide next steps, specifying what, who, when and where• End meeting and thank everyone for attending• Distribute meeting minutes with action items the next day!

Most of my students and clients find that when they begin using these effective meeting tips, their colleagues start adopting them too. Here’s to better meetings!

[ MEMBER OF THE MONTH ]

INDEPENDENT AIRChuck and Janice Munson are the owners of Independent

Air; a dream fulfilled 20 years ago. Chuck had worked for other companies for many years; his hard work and dedication to his employer caused many customers to assume that he owned the company where he worked. It wasn’t until 1994 that he decided to take the leap and start his own HVAC business. In the beginning Janice continued to work as a hair stylist. Two years later, she joined Chuck full time.

Chuck is well known for honest, reliable and affordable service. His primary goal is to respond to his customers as quickly as possible with the best overall solution to their heating and air conditioning concerns. Despite economic hardships in the area and ever changing energy mandate requirements; Independent Air has been successful through strategic business management and hard work. They have weathered the storms within the last 10 years with the economy change by learning when to seek guidance and who to seek advice from; most importantly, following through with the recommendations given.

As any successful business owner knows, personal time is a commodity. The behind the scenes requirements that the employees and customers are typically not privy too, can absorb nearly all of the owner’s time for hobbies and family; especially since this realm of the business is often handled outside the typical 9 to 5 work day. Chuck and Janice are firm believers in finding a release in the form of a hobby that forces you to step away from the business. Chuck finds his solace taking part in Civil War reenactments, while Janice prefers to sew and spend time with her grandchildren.

When asked to give advice to new business owners, they have several words of encouragement to survive the early years and succeed. It is important to keep your goals realistic by setting obtainable goals and expectations. An optimistic attitude is vital as you continue to work and promote your business. Always look for and prepare for a ‘Plan B’ to improve business and strive to maintain reputation and financial credit. Janice’s most important words of advice for a growing business; “If you have a business

that is growing; your employees are valuable. Treat them right. You can’t do this alone!” And Chuck adds, “know how to price products or services for a profit to create financial stability.”

Of course there are down sides to owning a successful business. “The intricate parts of the business cause more headaches than the employees and customers realize,” says Chuck. When you find the right management mindset those become minimal over time. Despite the headaches and days of working without income in the earlier years, the personal satisfaction of owning a business has been fantastic according to Chuck. He says that “owning his own business has allowed him to be things he never thought he could be.”

They are both enjoying the fruits of their labor after 20 years of business. The satisfaction of knowing that they are

helping people has allowed them to give back to the community. Chuck has been an active member of the Eustis Chamber for 19 years and doesn’t regret a single moment. He is thankful for the Chamber’s ability to help businesses grow and succeed. By working together as business owners “we make it work.”

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a centuries-old system of diagnosis and treatment of disease and pain based on the philosophy of balance, and how health depends on the body being as close to balance as possible. (In modern terms, think of lab values.) This balance is thrown off when an external (virus, bacteria, fungus, etc.) or an internal (hormonal imbalance, inherited trait, emotional/psychological factors) cause overpowers the body’s ability to regulate itself. This imbalance is put in terms of energy, or Qi.

When the body’s energy is unable to flow freely, nourishing and supporting the body’s intricate biochemical processes, disease and pain are the results. Among other causes of imbalance are poor diet, physical inactivity or overexertion, accidents/trauma, and seasonal changes.

The goal of TCM is to eliminate the cause of disease or pain, restore emotional well-being, and strengthen the body’s energy and ability to fight further attempts at imbalance.

Since Traditional Chinese Medicine long predates modern diagnostic tools, such as blood testing, x-rays, biopsies, etc., it relies on thorough questioning about the specific nature of a person’s symptoms. A head-to-toe assessment, including sleep, appetite and thirst, digestive function, menstrual cycle, body temperature, chest and head symptoms, etc. to establish your “baseline” is also crucial to a correct diagnosis. Taking into account the emotional state of the patient is of great importance to a practitioner as well, as we believe that the body and the mind are not two separate entities, but two parts of a whole. These findings allow the acupuncture physician to come up with a plan of acupuncture, herbal medicine, and dietary therapy that is unique to that person.

This aspect of TCM is what sets it apart from some forms of Western medicine. It is the premise that no two people, even with the same diagnosis, are

exactly alike, and should not be treated as if they were. For example, one person’s “cold” may present with no fever, chills, clear runny nose, itchy throat, and no thirst or appetite; another person will have “cold” symptoms of high fever and sweating, yellow mucus, raw and painful throat, and be thirsty. Why would these two very different “colds” be treated the same way?

All in all, TCM is a safe, effective, and natural form of medicine that can either be used in place of, or in addition to Western medical treatment. Whether working as a team with your other providers, or as your primary caregiver, I look forward to providing you with the best in Traditional Chinese Medicine, and to seeing you through your short- and long-term health and wellness goals.

“Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” Ferris Bueller

Technology, just like life, moves extremely fast. It sometimes seems that as soon as we figure out how to use the latest technology, everything changes. We all have access to information like never before, and when someone visits your website or even a social media page for your business, you often only have precious seconds to make a great first impression. Today I’d like to share with you 4 simple techniques to showcase your business online.

1. Clean Site Design: Keep it simple. Your Internet presence should be visually clean, clear, and communicate your strategic messaging. (And yes, this means no dancing bears. I’m sure they were popular once, but no more. I always recommend WordPress, because it’s so easily customized and provides you with a platform to quickly update and refresh your messaging, content, and latest news or blog for your business.

2. Clear Vision: Make sure your vision is front and center on your website. Not just what your business does – but why. Simon Sinek made an excellent point when he stated that “People don’t buy what you do; they buy why you do it. And what you do simply proves what you believe.” So, why are you in business? What is your vision? Your home page should communicate that and compel your visitors to learn more.

4 SIMPLE WAYSTO SHOWCASE YOUR BUSINESS ON THE INTERNET

By Valerie Reed [ BUSINESS SMART ]

3. Connect: Make sure you’re taking advantage of social media to connect with both your current and potential customers among other audiences. It’s truly a necessity to have a presence on all of the major social media outlets, such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, Pinterest, among others. With a WordPress website, there are even ways to automate your news and blog posts to seamlessly push to all of the social media outlets, as well as an email newsletter and RSS feed. Give people plenty of ways to stay connected.

4. Communicate: Instead of thinking of your website as a static billboard for your business, think of it as a platform for communication. I’m sure that you’re an expert in whatever niche that your business is in. But the search engines (such as Google or Bing) need to know it too. By making sure your website has fresh, regularly updated content, you greatly increase the likelihood that your potential customers will find you online. Did you know that the search engines will “crawl” your site for information daily if you update your website with fresh content often? This means that your business will show right at the top when someone searches online for what you do. Think creatively about what content your audience would be interested in. Not only will potential customers be more likely to find you online, but consistent communication will also ensure that your current customers keep you top-of-mind.

Thanksgiving: what is it all about? Most people equate Thanksgiving with feasting oneself into a gluttonous stupor. For others, Thanksgiving is watching hours and hours of football. Some believe Thanksgiving is wrestling other shoppers out of the best deal of the Christmas season.

The first Thanksgiving took place in 1621 when Pilgrims and Native American Indians shared food for a three-day harvest celebration. The Pilgrims didn’t make Thanksgiving an annual celebration, but they thanked God for an abundant harvest two years later.

Thanksgiving was made an annual holiday

during the American Civil War by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863. Listing many national blessings, Lincoln noted that God was gracious, even in the midst of great human loss and the devastation of war.

Pausing to give thanks for our blessings is something God wants us to do. God knows that an attitude of gratitude can increase our happiness. So why don’t we focus more on giving thanks? Our pride probably prevents us from expressing thanks to God. That’s why King David called for “a sacrifice of thanksgiving” (Psalm 107:22).

Thanksgiving is a habit that must be learned and practiced. If you need help

finding a reason to express thanks, look at the homeless, the hungry, and the hopeless. Look at our veterans, returning from duty without arms, legs, or a peaceful mind. You will quickly find reasons to give thanks.

But don’t stop at expressing thanks. Make a sacrificial donation or volunteer to help our less fortunate neighbors. Doing so will make you and our neighbors happier and more grateful.

There are three universal ways to determine when to throw in the towel or forge ahead. The first is to accurately recognize progress, which is difficult for most entrepreneurs. Unfortunately, the emotional taxation that accompanies running your own business often gets in the way of reason. In some cases, business owners overestimate their worth and the value of their product or service. Conversely, and most commonly, their skills and good ideas end up in a graveyard because they failed to recognize small bits of progress.

Building a business is like losing fat and building muscle at the same time. It takes time and requires both resistance and exertion. Losing weight requires abstaining from certain foods but also requires eating more good foods. You should keenly and objectively identify whether or not your business is shedding poor habits, while it is building better programs, services or products. Remember you don’t lose 30 lbs. in one workout, and you often don’t make a profit in a single day.

The second way to determine your path is to analyze whether or not the outcome you seek is the best for you in the first place. Don’t ask yourself what you will have or what you will do if your dream comes true. Instead, ask yourself who you will become during the

process as well as in the end. If you’re a better version of yourself as a result of the efforts and rewards, then pursue it. If you destroy what’s important to you, including your personhood, then stop. The price we pay as entrepreneurs is more about who we become when we build than what we get.

The final way is by measuring your fear to courage ratio. I use this term to illustrate that being an entrepreneur is not about the absence of fear, rather the power of courage. Courage cannot exist without fear. There is no need for courage where there is no fear. A man who blissfully and unknowingly jumps into a pond with alligators is not courageous, but his friend who jumps in to save him certainly is.

In some ways you may feel let down by this answer. Too many entrepreneurs reply on data and metrics to answer the question you have asked me. In the end, a strong will, the desire to innovate and creative thinking can change the data, but what’s at the core of who you are will dominate the issue.

The first principle is the axiom of “knowing when to say when,” and the second is the reality that “giving up never produces results.” How does an entrepreneur or commissioned sales person know when quitting is the acceptable and wise thing to do or if staying the course is better?
