In our art program at LHNW we too strive to walk worthy. We expect our students to challenge themselves so that they can improve. We expect them to give their best in all they do. But we also want them to use their talents and gifts to serve others. This year we will again be participating in a number of activities and services to use our gifts to help others. We currently have eleven students taking part in “The Memory Project,” where they are creating portraits for orphans from around the world. Our Mixed Media class is working with a 4th grade class to illustrate their stories and turn them into books. Our Ceramics class will again be hosting an Empty Bowls dinner to raise money for the homeless. While these are our “big ticket” items each year, our students also do lots of logo and t-shirt design work for our school and our congregations. But “walking worthy” is more than just these activities. It’s MORE important that our students experience Christ every day. Yes, we want them to experience and understand the beauty and logic and design of God’s creation, but more importantly, we want them to know Christ as their Savior. It is my hope and prayer that our art students don’t just see art as a cool thing to do, or a career choice, but rather a vocation by which they can share the love God has shown to them with others. We have a lot of outstanding young artists in our program this year. In these pages and around school you will get to see a lot of improvement in their skills. You will witness lots of great work being produced. Our students will win lots of awards and bring in a lot of scholarship money. The most important thing I hope you see is a maturing of our young people in their faith and walk with Christ. I hope you see it in how they interact with each other. I hope you see it as they live their lives in service to someone greater than themselves. May God grant each of us the capacity to “walk worthy” for Him!

God’s Blessings,

Walk Worthy

Colossians 1:10 encourages us to “walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him,

bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God.” While we can never

do this perfectly, it’s what we strive for.

In our art program at LHNW we too strive to walk worthy. We expect our students to

challenge themselves so that they can improve. We expect them to give their best in all they do.

But we also want them to use their talents and gifts to serve others. This year we will again be

participating in a number of activities and services to use our gifts to help others. We currently

have eleven students taking part in “The Memory Project,” where they are creating portraits for

orphans from around the world. Our Mixed Media class is working with a 4th grade class to

illustrate their stories and turn them into books. Our Ceramics class will again be hosting an

Empty Bowls dinner to raise money for the homeless. While these are our “big ticket” items

each year, our students also do lots of logo and t-shirt design work for our school and our

congregations.

But “walking worthy” is more than just these activities. It’s MORE important that our students

experience Christ every day. Yes, we want them to experience and understand the beauty and

logic and design of God’s creation, but more importantly, we want them to know Christ as their

Savior. It is my hope and prayer that our art students don’t just see art as a cool thing to do,

or a career choice, but rather a vocation by which they can share the love God has shown to

them with others.

We have a lot of outstanding young artists in our program this year. In these pages and around

school you will get to see a lot of improvement in their skills. You will witness lots of great work

being produced. Our students will win lots of awards and bring in a lot of scholarship money.

The most important thing I hope you see is a maturing of our young people in their faith and

walk with Christ. I hope you see it in how they interact with each other. I hope you see it as

they live their lives in service to someone greater than themselves. May God grant each of us

the capacity to “walk worthy” for Him!

*Bold indicates contests and opportunities that I know that students are participating in.)

I encourage our art students to enter their work and create work for contests outside of school.

Listed above are some of the many opportunities that have come to my attention. New ones will

be added as I become aware of them. I feel it is important as an artist to put your work out for

others to see and judge. For students who may be considering a career in art, having these

experiences on one’s resume can be important. I encourage our aspiring artists to take a look at

some back issues of this newsletter over the summer and start working on some ideas for the

contests that come up every year. Who knows, you may be able to win some recognition,

money, or scholarships!

Kristen Sadlocha and Jenna

Wilusz win the LHNW 2016

Architecture Contest

Each spring our Three-Dimensional arts classes get the

opportunity to design a building, build a model of it, and

then present it to a professional architect. This past year we

were honored to have Mr. Will Wittig, Dean of the School

of Architecture at the University of Detroit Mercy work

with our students and give them feedback on their models

and designs.

As part of this project, we also put the models out and have

the school vote on a favorite. The combined winner of the

school vote, the architect’s vote and the teacher vote wins a

brick in our brick walk. This past spring we had a tie! Both

Kristen Sadlocha and Jenna Wilusz had outstanding designs

that earned high marks from our architect for their

creativity, thoughtfulness, and craftsmanship.

Kristen designed a small book café based around the idea of

a bee and honeycomb. Jenna designed a small aviary/

museum that allowed for lots of fun activities.

Congratulations to our two winners!

Colin Jones Earns

Honorable Mention

This past fall Colin Jones entered a

series of photographs in the National

Youth Arts Foundation Art Contest.

In this contest of over 20,000

entries, he was awarded an

Honorable Mention in the category

of Photography for his work. With

the award, Colin also earned a $250

prize and a medal celebrating his

achievement! Congratulations Colin!

Artsonia Permission Forms Needed

Students who wish to have their work presented on our online site need to have a permission form

on file with Mr. Davis. Students have this form in their syllabus. Additional forms are also available

from Mr. Davis. Students who already have a permission form on file from previous years do not

need to submit a new one. Artsonia is a great resource in that is allows parents (and anyone else) to

see what students are creating. It also allows for students to have a chance to enter contests and win

prizes, money and supplies. Furthermore, their work can be put on products and the purchase of

these products gives money back to the LHNW Art Department. Join the growing legion of NW

students whose work is being viewed worldwide on Artsonia!

Additional work up in

the Learning Lounge

As we continue to try and put more of our

students artwork up around the building, the

new learning lounge is an ideal spot. Recently

we installed a work by Krisia Rosa highlighting

refugee children in Africa. It is a beautiful

work—check it out! Look for more to come

in the learning lounge and around school.

Kaylee Siebert Named

Annual Christmas Card

Each year out Mixed Media class holds a contest

to design the official school Christmas Card.

This year’s winner is Kaylee Siebert!

Congratulations Kaylee! Look for your

Christmas postcard in the mail!

Paul Rosa Enters Poster

Paul Rosa created a wonderful poster to

enter into the North American International

Auto Show Poster Competition. Good luck

to Paul! Hopefully you’ll be able to see his

work at Cobo Hall during the exhibit!
