NANTWICH radio station The Cat has earned an FM licence. Based on Beam Heath Way, the community station fought off rivals Redshift Radio in Crewe to snatch the five-year deal. REASEHEATH College students have been carrying out a survey of specimen fish at the Coole Acres Fishery in Nantwich. The fish management students spent a practical session investigating the species and size of population of fish in the specimen pool. The scale of the haul was soon apparent with the capture of over 500 lbs of fish, the biggest individual weighing in at 18 lbs. Most were large carp with a handful of smaller roach. All the fish received a health

check and were returned to the pool. This was the first time the group had used seine netting to catch fish, a system which relies on good teamwork and communication. Explained course leader Peter Bryan: “It’s important that our students learn practical skills and spend time in industry on work experience.” Pictured are Ryan Richardson and Regan Reynolds with two large carp while Ben Cook has a smaller roach.

FIELD WORKGreen light for Nantwich’s Kingsley Fields developmentA MAJOR housing project to build up to 1,100 new homes in Nantwich has been approved. The Kingsley Fields development has been given the go ahead by Cheshire East Council and work could start on the first phase of the project later this year. Along with housing, the development could include a sports centre, business units, primary school and a riverside park. The project had already been identified as Cheshire East’s preferred option for major development in Nantwich. And the scheme was approved by Cheshire East’s Strategic Planning Board last month. Eric Wood of developers Mosaic Estates said: “Our outline application was approved by Cheshire East Council, based on the

information we presented at the public meetings. “The next stage is for a detailed application to be made seeking approval of reserved matters.” He said the initial phases of the project would include a new link road through the site from the A51 to the A534. Developers said that the scheme had attracted more support than objections from local people The site, owned by Reaseheath College, is on farmland bound by the A51, Welshman’s Lane, Nantwich Town FC and the River

Weaver. Reaseheath College principal Meredydd David has said that the funds from the new development would help the college move forward and improve its facilities as Government funding cuts impact on the college.

STAFF at a Nantwich cats home are urging pet owners to get their moggies micro-chipped. Lee Stewart, centre manager at the Stapeley Grange cattery, said: “Those cats that come into us sick or injured or as a result of a collision could actually have loving owners who are desperately missing them. “But if they are not micro-chipped it does prove really difficult to reunite them.”

BUY-to-let seminars in Nantwich proved hughly popular last month. More than 150 would-be landlords attended the free events organised by local property specialists Martin&Co, Watts Mortgage and Financial Services and Hibberts solicitors. Martin&Co director Shaun Cafferty said: “Normally events like these usually attract 20-30 people at best, but we were simply inundated with demand.”

CHESHIRE Wildlife Trust has unveiled a new information point on the Shropshire Union Canal, celebrating one of Nantwich’s rarest wildlife residents. The specially-commissioned oak display gives visitors an insight into the water vole; following the Trust’s discovery that the mammals have a healthy colony on the canal just north of Nantwich Marina. The water vole – made famous as the mis-named ‘Ratty’ in Wind in the Willows – has seen a dramatic decline in numbers in recent years,

but clings on in a few areas across Cheshire including parts of the Shropshire Union Canal and the River Weaver in Nantwich. It’s thought parts of the canal network have become a stronghold for voles due to the consistent water levels and undisturbed nature of the waterways since the end of the industrial revolution. Pictured are Neville Preece and Roger Birch, of the Canal and River Trust, and Dr Vicky Nall of the CWT.

Ratty’s at home in NantwichA tribute to PeterCREWE Alex boss Steve Davies has paid tribute to one of the club’s unsung heroes. The team’s official photographer Peter Warburton sadly died after the match at Port Vale last month. Peter, from Wybunbury, near Nantwich, captured the 3-1 win for his side but he then collapsed and later died in hospital. “It was devastating and our thoughts are with his wife and family at this difficult time”, said Steve. “He has been with the club for ten years and was a great servant for the club.

“When these tragedies happen you always question things, especially when it is one of the good guys. “I had a good relationship with him and he was a familiar face that I always saw at the games, both at

home and away. “I would always shake his hand on the pitch at the away games because he was always there early. “Pete was a good, all round guy and his passing has

been devastating for everyone at the football club.” Club chairman John Bowler added: “Pete was a really genuine, pleasant man, who will be sorely missed by all the staff here.”

NANTWICH’S Neighbourhood Policing Team are making plans to ensure that next month’s Jazz, Blues and Music Festival goes off as safely as possible. A Cheshire Police spokesman said: “This event requires significant planning and includes bringing in police personnel from outside Nantwich to support the local team to ensure that the event can be held here with our priorities being the safety of the festival goers and Nantwich residents, alongside the prevention of crime and disorder. “We will continue to work with the organisers of the event to ensure that, from a policing perspective, the safety of the public is considered paramount.” • Police said there had been a recent increase in thefts from sheds and outbuildings and asked people to check their security to reduce opportunist crimes.

Country living at the Civic

POP-ROCK veterans Big Country play a show at the Civc Hall on Friday March 21 in the lead up to next month’s Jazz, Blues and Music Festival. The band was originally formed in 1981 by guitar playing founder members Stuart Adamson and Bruce Watson both native of the band’s hometown Dunfermline in Scotland. Initially driven by a shared vision of widescreen guitar melody, harmony and lyric, the classic Big Country sound was further

enhanced later that summer by the arrival of drummer Mark Brzezicki and bass player Tony Butler. This is the Big Country that recorded the classic debut album ‘The Crossing’ in 1983. The band broke massively worldwide with the release of the album’s classic singles ‘Fields Of Fire’, ‘Chance’ and signature song ‘In A Big Country’, which went on to become massive worldwide hits, selling over 2 million copies and driving

‘The Crossing’ to 3 prestigious Grammy nominations in the USA. The run of success continued throughout the 80′s with the release of the anthemic single ‘Wonderland’ and the second album ‘Steeltown’ (1984), which debuted at Number 1 in the UK. Further studio albums followed as did a special guest slot on the Rolling Stones ‘Voodoo Lounge’ European tour For tickets, priced at £20 plus booking, visit www.nantwichjazz.com.

THE next production from the Nantwich Players Youth Theatre comes to town next month. Private Peaceful, adapted from the Michael Morpurgo novel by Simon Reade, will be staged at the Love Lane Theatre from April 2 to 5. The drama is set in the fields of Devon and the WW1 battlefields of Flanders, giving audiences a heart-breaking glimpse of the way we once lived - and still die. The play is a classic ‘rites of passage’ story of two brothers and the exuberance and pain of their teenage love for the same girl, the pressures of their feudal family life, the horrors and folly of war and the ultimate price of courage and cowardice. Full of rich, rounded characters, Reade’s adaptation from the novel of Michael Morpurgo takes the audience on a mission to ‘set the record straight’ with regard to the conviction for cowardice. Directed by Michaela Warrilow, performances will start at 7.45pm. Tickets go on sale at the Civic Hall on March 18. Call 01270 600727.

DABBERS boss Danny Johnson is determined his squad remains focussed in the run-in to the end of the season. And the Nantwich Town side received a welcome boost last month with the return of midfield maestro Alex Meaney to the Weaver

Stadium. The 21 year old originally joined Nantwich on a month’s loan from Stockport County last February, making three appearances, and will be hoping to impress in his second spell. Manager Johnson said: “It’s been a really difficult

6 or 7 weeks for everyone connected with the club but it is vitally important that we all continue to stay focused and try not to let the impetus we had diminish. “The lads have been working extremely hard on the training ground and are in very good spirits.

“The support this season has been exceptional, absolutely outstanding. “It is now even more important that the supporters get right behind the lads in the remaining fixtures. I want to finish this season as high as we possibly can.”
