Customer (Who is purchasing toys today?)

Today’s Gen-X (born 1965-1980) and Millenial (born 1980 – 1995) moms want to provide more guidance and life skills for their own children. Many of them grew up as latch-key kids, with few chances to spend time with their working parents and receiving little guidance.

Bombarded with more marketing messages than ever before, in multiple media formats, with the increased ability to tune out content.

Actively seek guidance on purchase decisions for a range of goods from technology to toys, and they rely most on word-of-mouth recommendations from trusted “experts” and “mom tribes”. Gen-X moms are more likely to gather information by word of mouth, while Millenial moms are more likely to blog/chat.

If Millenial moms can’t find what they want/need in the market, they develop it and bring it to market themselves => “Mompreneur phenomenon”.

Believe childcare in U.S. is poor and overpriced and want creative alternatives.

Do not want to over-schedule or over-indulge their child.

More and more moms are adopting “Milestone Mania”, with a pervasive concern that their children are developing and learning at the “right” age.

A pre-Kindergarten education in an institutional setting has become the norm, as parents want their children to be well prepared for the Kindergarten experience.

Today’s mom values imagination, discovery, creativity and problem-solving over rote learning and believes that balance of play is important to prepare her young ones for life.

Grandparents account for 25% of toy purchases in the US.

One third of kids nationwide are overweight, with half of them considered obese.

DT POSITIONING

There is a lot of concern that our young people are lacking the creative skills and problem-solving abilities to thrive in today’s rapidly changing world. Research shows that children learn best through play. Their minds and bodies develop best when they are given an opportunity to explore their world, to try and fail and try again, and to stretch their imagination and discover new possibilities. We believe no one combines play and learning better than Discovery Toys.
