In whatfollows,we proceed n three teps.First,we definewhatwe meanby"borderonflict"ndsuccessfulor"positive") U impact. econdly,we developthe four ossiblepathsofsuch an impact.n a third tep,we discusshowthese
pathways aveoperatedwith egard o our five ase studies ndthen utline heconditionsnderwhich heres an impact,nd whetherhis mpacts positive r
negative.We will refer o our mpiricalasesthroughouthe rticle s wedevelopanddiscussourapproach.
BorderConflicts nd SuccessfulEU ImpactADiscursive efinitionfBorderConflicts
Tobegin,we needto definewhatwe considerobe a successfulrpositive mpactof ntegrationr associationn border onflictransformation,hichn turnequiresa definitionfconflict.Wefollow discursive efinitionf conflicts the rticu-lation fthe ncompatibilityfsubject ositions.Moresimplytated,we observethe xistence f a conflict hen n actor onstructsis orher dentityr nterestsinsucha waythat hese annot e madecompatible ith he dentityr nterests
of anotherctor.Conflicts thereforeiscursivelyonstructed.hismeansthat,on theonehand,we do notconsider iolence s a necessarylement fconflict;on theother and,we do notregard s conflicts hat he iteratureeferso as"latent" onflicts,nwhich n incompatibilitys deducted rom objective" re-dispositionsather han ctual ommunication.6
