The Gan Foundation for Cinema is one of the two foundations of the Groupama Group, one of France’s largest insurance companies and whose societal commitment has over many years been its support for artistic creation. The Foundation is strongly linked to the identity of the Gan company (one of three within the Groupama Group).
In 2017, the Foundation celebrates 30 years of engagement alongside cinema entrepreneurs, and numerous young talented individuals have emerged thanks to its support. Indeed, the Gan Foundation is one of the principal private partners in French cinema, one which accompanies creators right up to the distribution of their works, thanks to the Aid for Creation and Aid for Distribution, which are its principal missions.
Aid for Creation consists of yearly awards given to four feature-length films (first or second film projects) which are selected on the basis of their screenplays, and also the attribution of a Special Prize.
Each awarded film receives €53,000, of which €3,000 is for the director and €50,000 for the producer. This aid can be increased by a further €25,000 thanks to existing partnerships with Panavision Alga, specialized in the rental of filming equipment, and post-production company Mikros Image. Today, support from the Foundation is not only financial – it is also recognised as a mark of quality.
With its Aid for Distribution, the Foundation gives its support to various festivals, whether this be in the form of financial assistance, the organisation of professional meetings or the award of a prize for distribution (€20,000 for the French distributor of a film or project that has been honoured by the Foundation). It is within this framework that the Foundation is a partner of the Angers First Film Festival, the Cannes International Critics’ Week, and the Annecy International Animated Film Festival.
Since 2014, the Foundation awards a Prize for Distribution: THE TRIBE by Myroslav Slaboshpytskiy, THE WAKHAN FRONT by Clément Cogitore, ONE WEEK AND A DAY by Asaph Polonsky, ADAMA by Simon Rouby, MY LIFE AS A ZUCCHINI by Claude Barras, and WHITE FANG by Alexandre Espigares.
Historically a provider of insurance services for company founders, small- and me-dium-sized businesses, and professionals, Gan is today an insurer for all “entrepre-neurs” in both their private and professional lives. Gan thus accompanies all those who, from project to project, regard life as an enterprise. It is therefore natural that Gan, via its Foundation, leads a programme of patronage in favour of cinematographic creation and accompanies those who are “cinema entrepreneurs”.
The Gan networks* enjoy the support of the Foundation and a catalogue of films for the organization of public relations events, in the form of film screenings. These cinema evenings represent unique opportunities to invite customers, partners, prospective clients, and also staff, amid a privileged environment that combines conviviality, pleasure and culture.

The Foundation celebrates its 30th anniversary!
In a few figures
Houda Benyamina, 2014 award winner, who received the Caméra d’Or prize at the Cannes Film Festival for DIVINES MY LIFE AS A ZUCCHINI by Claude Barras, Distribution Prize winner, Annecy 2015
The Foundation was created by Gan in 1987 on the occasion of the 40th Cannes Film Festival. Costa-Gavras, then president of the Cinémathèque Française, provided the inspiration for the field of activity of what would be-come France’s leading company foundation dedicated to cinema, and he re-mains the Foundation’s honorary president.
Today, the Foundation’s action is recognised to be essential, as illustrated by the numerous awards it has received, which include, on three occasions, France’s Oscar du Mécénat (Oscar for Patronage) and, in 2007, the French culture ministry’s Grand Mécène Gold Medal for patronage.
In 2015, the Gan Foundation became a major patron of the Cinémathèque Française.
Special Awards
THE BEARS’ FAMOUS INVASION OF SICILY directed by Lorenzo Mattotti 2016 Special Award winner
In order to encourage exposure of the most diverse forms of cinema, the Foundation attributes Special Awards to projects whose creation demonstrates notable ambition and originality.

Accompanying filmmakers
The scriptwriters taking part in LA SÉLECTION in 2016
The Foundation takes a long-term view of accompanying talent.
It hands the stage to its award-winners during the RETOUR D’EXPÉRIENCE presentation at the Angers First Film Festival, an event at which a director and producer are invited to recount the adventure of making their first film.
The Foundation also invites directors to present their film project to producers when they meet together during a unique yearly gathering in Paris called LA SÉLECTION, created in association with the residential scriptwriting centre Le Groupe Ouest.
Since 2016, France’s National Centre for Cinematography, the CNC, and French magazine Film français are partners of the event.
Since its creation, the Foundation: R has studied more than 4,600 screenplays,R and provided aid for more than 180 first-film projects, including 13
Special Prize winners, 27 films awarded at the French cinema indus-try’s yearly César ceremonies, 15 award winners at the Cannes Film Festival, and more than 300 award winners in France and abroad of which more than 40 were honoured in 2016 alone!
The Foundation is also proud to have supported the first films of Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Marc Caro with DELICATESSEN, Bruno Dumont with THE LIFE OF JESUS, Mia Hansen-Løve with ALL IS FORGIVEN, Thomas Lilti with LES YEUX BANDÉS, Cyril Mennegun with LOUISE WIMMER, Alice Winocour with AUGUSTINE, Louis Garrel with TWO FRIENDS, and Houda Benyamina with DIVINES.
