    THE VILLAGE REPORTER

    WHITEHOUSE - 02/28/14 - In a year

that has seen Bryan turn into a true ri-

val, the Wauseon Indians avenged a

loss from a week earlier to defeat the

Golden Bears 63-49 to win a Division II

    Sectional title Friday night.

The two teams squared off the week

before and Bryan (13-9) won a share

of the NWOAL title with the Archbold

Bluestreaks with a win on Wauseon's

home court. This time the tables were

turned and the Indians (18-6) won the

more important of the two matches pro-

pelling them into the Division II districtseminal with Toledo Scott Wednesday

    night.

From the opening tipoff there was an

immediate difference from the last game

between the two talent laden teams.

Zac Robinson, who did not score in the

rst matchup, drained a rainbow three-

ball to start the scoring. Seconds later,

Noah Castle was fouled by Sean Culler

hitting one of his two shots to give the

Indians a quick 4-0 lead at the 6:12

mark of the opening frame. Baskets by

Thomas Martin and Culler tied the game

at 4-4. Castle pulled down a rebound

off a Austin Schimmoeller miss that led

to another three point goal by Robinson

to up the Wauseon lead to 7-4. At that

point the two defenses dominated playuntil Jason Hug's make at the 1:41 mark

made it a 7-6 game. After a Wauseon

turnover, Castle scooped up a rebound

that led to the Indians third three-point

shot, this one by Corry Byers. The quar-

ter ended on a Jacob Newlove basket off

a dish from Castle and the Indians had

    opened up a 12-6 advantage.

The Bears' Hug missed the opening

shot of the second quarter with the re-

bound going to Kris Boysel. Byers was

found open again at the top of the key

beyond the arc and drained another

three to open the margin to nine points

at 15-6. Bryan nally brought the 8-0

Wauseon run to an end after Martin was

fouled by Boysel. He sank his two free

throws and the score read 15-8. The

    teams matched misses before Martin

fouled Boysel with 4:59 remaining in the

rst half. Boysel canned both shots and

the lead was back to nine at 17-8. A

Bryan turnover followed by a Byers miss

and matched by a Bryan miss that was

pulled down by Robinson led to a Castle

make to open the margin to 19-8. After

a Bryan timeout, Jake Jones scored two

baskets sandwiched by a foul shot from

Boysel as the Indians lead was 10 at 22-

    12. The Golden Bears scored twice and

the Indians got a bucket by Byers as the

half ended with the Indians in controlat 24-16.

Bryan closed the gap to six to start

the second half with a shot from Culler.

But two straight Wauseon baskets from

Castle and Boysel opened the game back

up to a 10 point advantage once again.

What was absent over the rst three

quarters was the three point shot that

the Golden Bears enjoyed in their rst

    meeting with Wauseon. Defensive ad-

    justments and another strong perfor-

mance by the Wauseon perimeter de-

fense, not only stymied Bryan's three

point shooting but shut it down almost

totally. They nally scored one from be-

yond the arc when Brandon Dean hit

with 4:51 remaining in the contest to

    make the score 48-30.

With the third quarter ending seeing

Wauseon in complete control at 38-23,

the fourth quarter was equally as Indian

    dominated. Though Bryan outscored

Wauseon in the nal eight minutes 26-

25, it was a complete domination by a

great Wauseon defense that stole the

    show on several occasions.

Noah Castle led his team with 19

points, Boysel added 16 and Byers 14

as the Tribe now moves on to tackle a

very good Toledo Scott team who were

winners in sectional play over Genoa

    114-60.

Stryker Panthers' Cold Start Becomes TheirUndoing Against Edgerton At Sectionals

BRYAN: February 28, 2014 The rstcontest of the Bryan D-IV Sectionals on

February 28 saw the #1 seeded EdgertonBulldogs facing off against the Stryker

Panthers for the title. The Panthers opened

their 2013-14 campaign against thesesame Dogs, dropping a 52-46 decision in

The Cage.Stryker got off on the wrong foot in this

game, spotting Edgerton an early 9-0 lead, and had to play catch-up the rest of the

way out. The Bulldogs, despite having the

big edge early, were never able to run away

with the game as the Panther Pack settledin and began chipping away at the lead.

Edgerton appeared to be nally be pull-ing away with a pair of threes in the fourth

period, but even that 9-point edge was in-

sufcient. Stryker cut the decit to justthree before having to give fouls. Edgerton

capitalized on their opportunities at thefoul line to send the Panthers home on a

54-43 decision that was closer than it ap-peared.

    By Timothy Kays

    THE VILLAGE REPORTER

BRYAN: February 26, 2014 The late

game of the February 26 Bryan D-IV

Sectionals was a BBC battle between

the North Central Eagles and the Pet-

tisville Blackbirds. Over the past four

years, these two teams have developed a

rivalry that seems to bring out the best

in both squads. As could be expected, it

was a hard-fought defensive war where

rallies were answered by rallies and nei-

    ther team backed down. Unfortunately

for the Eagles, they were to receive a

taste of the medicine that they doled outto Fayette just two nights before as Pet-

tisville's Korben Rychener scooped up a

loose ball with time expiring in overtime

and red off a desperation shot that

went in as the buzzer sounded to send

the Blackbirds to the D-IV Districts,

and send the Eagles home with a 42-40

    heartbreaker.

GLIDING BLACKBIRD... Tate Kauffman of Pettisville ies down the middle for two.

The Eagles' defense held down the high-

speed offense of Pettisville for the rst

half, opening up a double-digit lead that

the Blackbirds were able to trim to eight

going into the intermission. The second

half saw Pettisville going full-out on

team speed and switching defenses, al-

ternating between a trapping man press

and a 1-3-1 trapping zone press. Attimes triple-teaming on traps, Pettisville

began to cut into the decit by forcing

turnovers. With the North Central lead

cut to three going into the fourth and

the game becoming a track meet, the

game became a back and forth war that

ended tied at 38 at the end of regulation.

Overtime saw much of the same...

pedal to the metal back and forth, and

with the clock ticking down to zero, a

double overtime looked to be in the

works. With less than three seconds left

in the extra frame and the score knotted

at 40-40 though, lightning struck, and

the thunder that followed was nothing

    short of deafening.

    The Blackbirds were shopping

around for a last shot opportunity

against a North Central defense thatwas more than averse to the idea. The

Eagles forced a loose ball in the circle

on the Pettisville end, and free-for-all

ensued to snap up the ball. Out of the

fracas with the ball came Rychener, who

circled right, cut to the middle and let

    y a runner with 1/10 second remain-

ing. The ball touched nothing but net as

    the nal buzzer was sounding.

    The deafening explosion from the

    Pettisville student cheering section was

matched only by the instant heartbreak

of North Central, who battled the 2013-

14 BBC Champions tooth and nail for

four plus quarters, only to fall in the

same manner that they had dispatched

    Fayette.

A teary-eyed Coach Justin Houk of

the Eagles talked about the pride that

he had in his squad that played de-antly all year long. "About nine games

ago, playing Hilltop and down by 19

at halftime. It would have been easy to

fold, but we grew up there, realized what

we needed to do, and went on to be one

shot away from heading to Districts."

That game against Hilltop to which

Coach Houk was referring saw the Ea-

gles coming from 19 down to win by a

    55-53 score.

Pettisville was led by Rychener and

Jeremy Mann with 11 points apiece,

and Tate Kauffman with 10. Austin

Dykstra posted 6 points, Eli King had

3, and Noah Miller put in a free throw.

    North Central seniors Dylan Hutchi-

    son, Clayton Ferguson, Branden Turner

and Chase Legacy hung up their high

tops for the nal time after the game.It was Ferguson leading all scorers with

13 for the Eagles, with Hutchison add-

ing 8, and Turner and Jordan Reeves

each hitting for 5. Legacy nished with 4

points, Josh Sawyer had 3, and Jordan

    Bailey had 2 points.

Pettisville Defense Proves TooTough For The Edon Bombers

BRYAN: February 26, 2014 While size means a lot in basketball, it can be

negated by speed. On February 26, the David versus Goliath matchup at the D-IV

Sectionals saw the Edon Bombers taking on the Pettisville Blackbirds. Both teams registered a win against the other during the regular season, but to

see the lineups coming out onto the oor for the opening tip, it was a question as

to which Edon team would show up...the dominator or the frustrated. For all their

advantages in size, the Bombers were frustrated all evening by the speed of a Pet-

tisville defense that turned turnovers into points with rapidity, sending Edon home

    with a 38-29 defeat.

The loss spells the end of the line for Edon seniors Jacob Brown, River Wicker,

Mike Peeples, Brock Thiel, Levi Lemmon and Wyatt Walkowski.

Double Overtime Drama Sees North CentralTopple Fayette On Ferguson Three

    By Timothy Kays

    THE VILLAGE REPORTER

    BRYAN: February 26, 2014 The

Fayette Eagles and the North Central

Eagles squared off in the D-IV Section-

al seminals in Bryan on February 26.

These BBC teams feature good inside-

outside threats, and pack the speed and

ball handling ability to make them both

potent on the defensive end. It was that

defense that played a huge role in the

contest as a trey from Fayette's Chandler

Sanford with three tenths of a second

remaining sent the game into overtime,

and another trey from North Central's

Clayton Ferguson with two tenths of a

second left in the second overtime end-

ed the game with North Central upend-

ing Fayette by a 34-31 score.

A defensive struggle from the start,

North Central carried leads after eachof the rst three periods over Fayette,

a team that had beaten North Central

twice during the regular season. With

the score 31-28 and Fayette struggling

from the eld as they had all nightagainst the North Central defense, San-ford buried his only three on the nightwith 3 tenths of a second lef t to send the

game into overtime.Neither team was able to put up

points in the rst overtime, and as the

seconds ticked down, the second over-time appeared to be doomed to collectanother set of zeroes. With the score still

tied at 31-31 and time winding down tozero though, North Central senior Clay-ton Ferguson had the ball on the perim-eter, trying in vain to escape the defense

of Sanford. Finally, with 2 tenths of asecond remaining and Sanford still inhis grille, he took a desperation shotfrom the mid right beyond the arch

that went off glass and in as the buzzersounded. His trey put a dagger into thehearts of the #2 seeded and defendingSectional champion Fayette squad.

"I still haven't hit reality yet," said asmiling Ferguson in the locker room af-ter the game. "I saw that the shot was

far right, and I just called bank...I don'tknow. Unbelievable. It's huge; I just feelso good right now." When asked aboutthe defense of Sanford, he was quick to

reply that he could not get a good lookfor the nal shot. "No, not really. He wasright up in me, and hands up. I couldn't

even get open half the time, he was sotight to me." Chase Legacy led NorthCentral with 10 points, while Ferguson,Branden Turner and Josh Sawyer each

nished with 8 points. With the defeat the stellar careers of

Fayette seniors Sanford, Tyler Cox, and

Justin and Marcus Stoltzfus comes toa close.

Cox led Fayette with 10 points, whileSanford nished with 9. Tristen Bates,

Wade Burkholder and Koby Biddix eachhad 3 points, Skylar Lantz had 2, and

Jerad Seiler was held to one point.

CONTINUATION OF BOYS VARSITY BASKETBALL ACTION

    By Bill Bray

    THE VILLAGE REPORTER

    WHITEHOUSE - 02/26/14 The

Wauseon Indians advanced to a Divi-

sion II sectional title game with a 60-

37 thumping of the Napoleon Wildcats

    Wednesday night.

In their rst meeting during the regu-

lar season, Napoleon used the three-ball

to defeat Wauseon. This time around

    the "three-ball" abandoned the Wildcats

for most of the contest leading to a big

    Wauseon win.

Defensive play by guards Zac Robin-

son and Corry Byers stymied the Napo-

leon perimeter game throughout the rsthalf of play. With the arc shooting out of

the equation for the Wildcats, Wauseon

took a 14-6 advantage at the end of the

rst quarter. The Indians' Noah Castle

committing a foul on Wauseon's rst of-

fensive possession, ended in foul trou-

ble much of the game as the 6'5" junior

post player committed two fouls the rst

half and had to sit for part of the rst 16

    minutes.

    Castle completed a conventional

three-point play to put Wauseon up

17-6 to start the second quarter. Kris

Boysel followed with a 'nothing but net'

three and the Tribe exploded to a 20-6

lead. The 6-0 run came to an end when

Boysel fouled Anson Lankenau on his

    three-point attempt. Lankenau made

two of the three foul shots and the Wild-cats had their rst points of the second

quarter with nearly three minutes gone.

Boysel was good on a one and one and

    Napoleon's Michael Gilliland made a

foul shot as the score read 24-9. Those

were the only points the Wauseon de-

fense allowed during the second eight

minutes as the half ended with the Indi-

    ans up 29-9.

Napoleon came back to the game in

the third period with re in their eyes.

They knew that if they were going to

run and gun, then was the time to do

it. The three-ball began working for the

Wildcats. Zach Willeman scored a pair

of baskets as the Indians lead began

    shrinking to 29-14. Napoleon scored

three from beyond the arc to help themclose the gap to a 10-point decit 41-31

    as the third quarter ended.

Wauseon came out strong in the -

nal eight minutes as they went on an 8-0

run to make it a 49-31 game with 5:27

    remaining. The Indians had weathered

the storm and cruised down the home

stretch. From that point they outscored

Napoleon 11-6 to go on for the seminal

    victory.

Kris Boysel led all scorers with 21

points as Jacob Newlove nished with

12 and Noah Castle with a quiet 11.

Wauseon (17-6) and Bryan (13-8) are

now set for their rematch from a week

ago. The Indians are hoping to avenge a

72-65 loss to the Golden Bears. Game

Stryker Panthers Roar Back In Second Half;Take Down Hilltop At Sectional 70-55

    By Mark Mercer

    THE VILLAGE REPORTER

BRYAN: February 25, 2014 At to-

night's opening game of the Division

4 Boys Basketball Sectional, held at

Bryan High School, it was a tale of two

half's. With the Hilltop Cadets seeming-

ly in control at the 5:34 mark in the 3rd

quarter, the Stryker Panthers came alive

aided by Hilltop turnovers and the Pan-

    thers Dean Beamont's 3 steals in a 30

second span. At the 1:47 mark, Stryker

re-captured the lead and never looked

back, running away to record a 70-55

victory and advance to Friday night ac-

tion against # 1 seed Edgerton.

Opening the game, Hilltop came out

red up, grabbing an early 5-0 lead and

outpacing the Panthers in the opening

    quarter 20-15. Hilltop's Number 21, 6'

0" Freshman Tim Maneval lit up the

scoreboard off the bench , hitting for

12 points early to pace the Cadets to a

big 1st half. It was also a huge defen-

sive effort by the Cadet's Jalen Towers

    and Maneval, dominating the boards

early and frustrating the Panthers on

both ends of the court. The Cadets held

Stryker's big man, Parker Ruffer to 1

point in the opening half, but keeping

the Panthers on pace was Sophomore

Chad Ruffer, who hit for 12 in the 1st.

Going into the locker room at the half,

Hilltop held an 11 point lead, 37-26 and

most importantly had the momentumswinging their way.

Opening the second half, once again

Chad Ruffer made key shots and stood

tall along the defensive front, and at the

5:34 point in the 3rd, the momentum

began to swing the other way. Hilltop

    committed costly turnover's that opened

Panthers in the second half. both Chad

and Parker Ruffer, along with Beamont,

game, the route was on for the Stryker

    Panthers.

In the game for the Panthers, Beamont

led the way with 19, while Parker Ruffer

    added 17, along with Chad Ruffer's 16.

Clingaman had a big game defensively

while adding 8 points, and Junior Bren-

    nan Woolace hit for 6.

For the Cadets in the loss, coming

off the bench to hit for 21, Maneval had

a huge game and showed he will be a

huge factor for the Cadets over the next

    three seasons. Jalen Towers contribut-

ed 8, and was a big factor defensively

in the opening half, helping pace Hilltop

to a big halftime lead. Freshman Quinn

Smith scored 7, Kelby Grime hit 2 big

3's for 6, while Senior Xaiver Lowery

    chipped in 3.

Huge Second Half Sends Delta To ASectionals Win Over Montpelier

    WAUSEON: February 25, 2014 The

    Montpelier Locomotives opened the D-

III Sectionals with a matchup against

NWOAL rival Delta on February 25. Af-

ter an initial sign of success, things rap-

idly deteriorated for the Locos as Delta

went on to post an 87-51 eviction notice

    from the tourney against Montpelier.

The Locos' Alex Matzinger hit the

ground running in the rst period as he

poured in seven points and Dalton Sur-

bey added four to lead Montpelier to a

tenuous 15-14 lead. The Locos' wheels

began to loosen in the second as Delta

regained the lead with a 16-10 run to

take a 30-25 lead into the intermission.

The second half saw the wheels to-

tally falling off for Montpelier as Delta

outgunned the Boys in Blue 57-26 down

    the stretch for the win.

The loss spelled the end of the Mont-

pelier hoops career of Parker Houk.

    Surbey and Dylan Snyder nished

with 10 points apiece for Montpelier,

with Matzinger adding 9, and KyrinSchuman adding 6. Jacob Leung post-

ed 5 points, Jared Shoup had 4 points,

Houk and Nate McCord had 3 points

    THE VILLAGE REPORTER

PAULDING - 2/27/14 Forget the rst

three quarters. It was the fourth quarterthat will go down in Wauseon girls basket-

ball history. The Indians dropped the dis-trict seminal game to Lima Bath in over-

    time 82-78.

But going into the fourth and nalquarter the chances of an overtime session

were highly unlikely. The Indians fell behind after the third

quarter by the score of 56-36. The Tribeonly scored 11 points in the third quarter

and the Lady Kittens took advantage by

banging down 22 points. Lima Bath sankfour three-point shots during the stretch.

Every time the Indians scored, during thethird quarter track meet, the Lady Kittens

responded. They slowly built on their leadas the score reached 17 points with a three

by Tera Herr. Wauseon failed to score over

the nal 1:47 of the third stanza. The fourth quarter started with the

same sharp shooting by Lima Bath asBri Smith was good from beyond the arc

to give her team a 23-point advantage at59-36. With that the sea parted and com-

ing through it were Natalie Koenig, Sally

Frank, Haley Archibeque, Sariah Yackeeand Maddie Richer. The starting ve for

the Indians played the most aggressive,

determined quarter of basketball they haveplayed all season.

A bucket by Frank made the score 59-38. A Bath turnover led to a basket by

Archibeque at the 6:34 mark to make it a19-point decit at 59-40. Yackee tied up

Danielle Van Dyne giving the Indians pos-session and a Yackee basket cut the mar-

gin to 59-42. A steal and lay up by Archi-beque at the 6:02 mark made it a 59-44game.

Bath's Madison Dackin was fouled byHannah Blaylock and made her two shots.Frank responded with a make to keep the

decit at 15 with a score of 61-46. Bathturned the ball over again with a traveland Frank responded again with a bucketto close the gap to 61-48. Bri Smith hadan attempt at a conventional three-pointplay but was short on the foul shot andBath led 63-48. Yackee went to the linenext and made one of her two shots as thescore read 63-49. At this point, NatalieKoenig, who had an unusually quiet gameup to this point, came to life. The talentedjunior was fouled on one of her patenteddrives to the hoop and drained both foulshots at the 3:05 mark to bring the Tribe towithin 12 points at 63-51. Maddie Richerthen committed a foul and the shots weregood putting the Kittens back up 65-51.The Indians, needing a big time basket, got

just that from Koenig from beyond the arcas the high ying shot swished throughthe net bringing the Tribe to within 11. AYackee steal and basket cut the lead tonine with 2:03 to play.

Jenna Hollar was then fouled by Koenigand hit both shots for a 67-56 lead. A piv-otal three ball by Richer with 1:17 remain-ing cut the lead to eight at 67-59. With56.7 seconds left, Archibeque was good ontwo foul shots cutting the margin to 67-61.Full court pressure by the Indians paiddividends as Lima Bath lost the ball andKoenig hit a lay up to close the gap to fourat 67-63. More great defensive work by theTribe put the ball in Koenig's hands againas she hit the shot and converted the threepoint play bringing the Tribe to within oneat 67-66. Archibeque's scrappy defensiveplay continued but this time she fouledDackin sending her to the line. She madeone of two with 32.0 left. Koenig againresponded with a drive down the lane totie the game at 68-68 with 5.4 secondsremaining. Bath missed a three-point at-tempt and the game was shockingly sentinto overtime.

Lima Bath (20-3) used 14 points in theovertime session to secure the win andmove onto the District title game. But itis believed that their biggest battle cameat the hands of the (14-10) Wauseon LadyIndians.

Natalie Koenig, after scoring four pointsin the rst half, was the game's leadingscorer nishing with 22. Maddie Richer, making some big shots when the Indiansneed them most tallied 17, and post play-er Sally Frank, giving up seven inches to

her Lima Bath opponent, collected 11 re-bounds and had a season-high 17 points."I am so proud of the effort of my team

tonight," coach Ashley Oyer said. "I am notsure many people in the gym thought wecould come back from a 20 point decit.Even though we came up short in the endof overtime, my girls played with so muchheart and for that, I am so proud. That iswhat Wauseon Girls Basketball is about

and I am proud to be their coach."

Fayette Exits The D-IV Districts AfterHard Fought Loss To Holgate

ARCHBOLD: February 27, 2014 The Fayette Lady Eagles set out to try to improve

on their D-IV District runner up post from last year, and their rst task was to get pastHolgate.

The Lady Tigers and the Lady Eagles played each other tough for four quarters andseveral lead changes, but Holgate has a long running tradition of unshakable leader-

ship running through their team named Clady...in this case, Jillian Clady. The familyname is synonymous with Holgate hoops, and despite the best efforts of Fayette's Taylor

Grifths in the fourth period, there was simply too much Clady leadership for which to

atone. A small advantage was widened by late free throws as Holgate sent Fayette pack-ing by a 50-44 score.

Pettisville Lady Blackbirds Fall ShortOf Regionals With Loss To Ayersville

dybirds' cool demeanor not only carriesthem through, but also puts them in the

winners bracket more often than not. On

February 27 though, the Ladybirds met anew kind of adversity in Ayersville. With

Dana Fricke, a candidate for postseasonawards galore as the tallest girl on the Pet-

tisville team at 5' 10", the Lady Blackbirdswere facing a potent paint combination of

Molly Hammerstein at 5' 11" and Megan

Schubert in the post at 6' 4". It was the

damage done by those two that broughtthe Pettisville season to a close by a 53-48

score.Hammersmith and Fricke led the scor-

ing early as all nine of the rst periodpoints for Ayersville came from Hammer-

smith, while Fricke accounted for six of

Pettisville's eleven. It was in the secondperiod that the perimeter defense of Ay-

ersville toughened, making outside shotsalmost as tough for the Ladybirds as chal-

separated Pettisville from a shutout in the

second period as the Lady Pilots carried a24-14 lead going into the half.

The third period saw the Lady Pilotscontinuing to add the points, but their de-

fense was unable to adjust for Avina, who

cranked up her speed and carried her teamon her shoulders. Arguably the best point

guard in Northwest Ohio, Avina became ablur on the offense, bringing to the fore the

adage, 'You can't stop what you can't see.'Pettisville went on a 23-13 run in the third

to tie the game going into the fourth. Of

those 23 points, 12 came off the hands ofAvina, many as a result of fearlessly crash-

ing into the no-man's land of the Ayersvilleinterior.

The fourth period was back and forth, but with Avina and Fricke both walking

the wire with four fouls apiece, the Lady

Pilots began to pound the interior again,

then alternated out to guard Kylee Tressler

who hit on six of her total seven points in

the nal frame. Once Ayersville got the lead

back late, the Ladybirds were forced to an-

swer on every possession, something they

could not do. Pettisville was forced to give

fouls, and free throws from Schubert and

Hammersmith helped ice away the win.The loss closes the book on the Lady

Blackbird careers of seniors Olivia Wright,

    Lauren Hostetler and Audra Klopfenstein.

Avina led Pettisville with 17 points,

Dana Fricke Of Pettisville Named 2013-14Girls' Basketball Player Of The Year

    By Timothy KaysTHE VILLAGE REPORTER

I'll be honest with you, by no means doI envy the job of Buckeye Border Confer-

ence Commissioner, Randy Bachman. It isfrom his desk and his ofce which the All-

BBC team and BBC Player of the Year an-nouncements are made, and given all thetalent throughout the girls' ranks this sea-

son, I'd have had a nervous breakdown.Just take a minute and ponder the sea-

son passed. You have a 1,000-point scorerin Conner Varner of Stryker. Within the

last few weeks, another member of the Mil-

lennium Club was added in the person ofHannah Bleikamp of Hilltop. There is the

'third coach' of the Pettisville Lady Black-birds, Mikala Avina, who I say again is ar-

guably the best point guard and oor gen-eral in Northwest Ohio. A strong case can

be made for Taylor Grifths, Kaela Seiler

and Alexis Fruchey of Fayette, the explo-sive Emily Armbruster of Hilltop, and the

sweet-shooting Connor Sullivan of Strykerand Lauren Hostetler of Pettisville. There

are only so many spaces available for rstteam, second team and honorable men-

tion players...and only one for the 2013-

14 BBC Player of the Year. Who would benamed to the top spot in a year where tal-

ent was as abundant as the water in theoceans?

    Dana Fricke of Pettisville...that's who.

In the Pettisville system of Head CoachJason Waldvogel, there are guards and

there are forwards, but there is no cen-ter. With Dana on the oor, a center is

not needed as she crashes the boards andscores like an elite pivot player. What sep-

arates her from the rest is that while the

ball is being brought down the court, she

can let her defender go right past her to alow post, while she stops and drains threes

from the top of the key. Her ball handling

skills are that of a #1 guard, she can hitfrom anywhere like a #2 guard, and she's

not at all shy mixing it up in the paint withforwards and centers. There was no true

way of labeling her at the beginning of thecampaign, but there is now...BBC Player

    of the Year.

    THE VILLAGE REPORTER

COLUMBUS: February 27, 2014 March 1, 2014: The Ohio High School Athletic As-

sociation Individual State Wrestling Tournament, held at the Schottenstein Center onthe Campus of the Ohio State University, is held as one of the most prestigious tourna-

ments in the nation. The landscape of collegiate wrestling is littered with former OhioHigh School State Championship grapplers and Ohio on a year to year basis yields some

of the top college prospects in the nation. Qualifying for a select spot in one of the 13

weight classes at the Division I, II and III competition is rigorous, and to gain the inviteis a top honor. Four wrestlers in each weight class, qualifying from the four District

Meets held throughout Ohio receive the invitation, assembling a eld of 16 wrestlersin each weight class. The competition at the state tournament wrestles off for one of 7

places awarded at the championships, and each wrestler's goal is to stand on top of theplatform at the conclusion of competition and claim the title of State Champion.

This past weekend, four area wrestlers qualied and participated in the State Tour-

nament down in Columbus. For the Montpelier Locomotives, in the 126 lb weight class,Senior Sean Taylor qualied out of the Bowling Green State University D III District

Meet, off of one of the most memorable second day performances at BGSU to powerhis way into the state meet. For the Wauseon Indians at the D-II level, three individu-

als earned an invitation to the State Championships; Junior Wade Hodges in the 132lb weight class, Sophomore Tre Campbell in the 160 lb weight class, and Senior Aaron

Schuette in the 170 lb weight class. For the Indians, Schuette returned to Columbus

as the 2013 State Runner-Up in the 160 lb weight class, while Hodges made his thirdconsecutive trip to Columbus, posting a 7th place nish as a freshman and returning

home in 2013 with a 4th place nish.

MONTPELIER LOCOMOTIVESMontpelier Locomotive Senior Sean Taylor opened competition at the state meet

on Thursday afternoon, shortly after the opening ceremony was held, in session one..

Wrestling in the Championship Bracket, Taylor was matched against Loudonville's Ju-nior Colton Ullman, who brought a 29-6 record to Columbus. Ullman qualied for the

state tournament out of the Gareld Heights District, nishing as runner-up. In theopening match, Taylor suffered a 1st round 14-2 loss, unable to gain the initiative in the

match, and dropping the Loco Senior to the Consolation Bracket. For Taylor, this meantanother match on the opening Thursday night and facing the possibility of an early day

    one elimination from the tournament.

Taylor's Consolation Round 1 match-up, Caldwell's Kolby Rayner, came into thestate meet with a 37-9 mark. Rayner drew overall number one ranked Jarred Granger

out of Covington, losing by tech fall to the eventual State Champion Ganger. Against theJunior from Caldwell, Taylor wrestled a smart and aggressive match, keeping the Junior

from gaining a foothold in the match and securing the 10-7 victory to survive day oneand advance to the 2nd Consolation Round on Friday morning.

Consolation Round 2's match-up for the Loco's Taylor was Versailles' Matt Mangen,

a Senior with a 39-12 record who won his opening match of the meet, but dropped aclose battle with eventual Runner-Up Zach Durban, who lost the State Title match by

1 point. In the match, both wrestlers traded leads in the opening period, and throughout the

contest both wrestlers fought for their tournament life. When the clock drained to zeroat the end of the third period, Mangen held the upper hand 9-5, with Taylor dropping

his second match of the tournament, and closing out his Locomotive Career. Taylor

concluded his Senior Campaign with a 37-15 record.Taylor reected on his Senior Season after conclusion of his run in the tournament

stating "It was my goal to get 100 wins and reach state my senior year, and I accom-plished that here this weekend. In looking back I am glad I put in the hard work to reach

my goal and it has been a great experience these past two days." In speaking with Head

Coach Troy Roth regarding Sean's performance, Roth stated "I thought Sean wrestledvery solid vs. some very good talent. I told Sean that reaching the state meet would bring

new challenges and it would be a new game against some very talented wrestlers. Whenevenly matched opponents are on the mat a move here and there can be the difference

between moving on and going home. Overall I am very proud of Sean and what he hasaccomplished."

WAUSEON INDIANSWauseon's Junior Wade Hodges entered the state meet with very high expectations,

and they were well earned. Coming off of a rst place nish at the BGSU D II DistrictTournament, Hodges brought a 45-4 record to state competition. Hodges has already

set his reputation as one of the 132 lb weight class's nest wrestlers, posting a 7th placenish as a Freshman in 2012 and taking home a 4th place nish in his Sophomore

season. Opening competition on February 27 in round one of the Champions Bracket,

Hodges was paired with Kenton Ridge Senior Seth Cochran, who brought a 40-10 recordout of the Wilmington District. In the match, Hodges took control by scoring the open-

ing points, staying out in front of the Senior from Kenton Ridge throughout the match.Hodges earned a 9-5 decision to move to the Quarternals of the 132 lb weight class

with the victory.Quarternal matches began on Friday morning, February 28, in the second session

of the tournament. Hodges Quarternal opponent, Garrett Cater out of Akron St. Vin-

cent-St. Mary came to the state meet as a Runner-Up nisher at the Alliance District, entering with a 38-11 record. Carter advanced with an opening round win over Buckeye

Valley Senior DayShawn Haynes by pin in the third period. Though in the Quarternalmatch-up, Carter fought a well wrestled match, but Wauseon's Hodges held a slight

advantage and when the nal whistle blew, Hodges walked off of the mat with a 5-2 vic-tory and a Semi-Final slot for Friday night action. With the victory over Cater, Hodges

assured a third straight state-placement nish for his career.

Friday night's Semi-Final match up for Hodges would be powerhouse St. Paris Gra-ham Local's Sophomore Brent Moore, fresh off of a tech fall 21-6 victory in the Quarter-

nals over Crestwood's Conner Nemec. Moore entered the state meet by earning a District

Title at the Wilmington District Meet and brought a 40-3 record into the match. In the

battle between these two District Champions, neither wrestler gained any advantagethroughout the match, with each scoring on an escape and ending the regulation third

period knotted at 1 each. In the rst overtime 30 second period, with each wrestler try-

    ing for a takedown and score, but neither wrestlers were able to secure the win. Follow-ing the 30 second neutral period, each wrestler would have a 30 second riding period;

gain an escape and ride out your opponent in the next 30 second period and securethe victory. However, in the case of Wauseon's Hodges and Graham's Moore, these two

wresters fought a championship style battle but once again, no points were scored andthe match would move into "ultimate tie breaker." In this tiebreaker situation, the rst

wrestler that scored in the match had choice of top or bottom and must either escape

if on bottom or ride out the opponent if on top. Hodges, who scored the 1st point in thematch with a second period escape, selected to be the bottom wrestler in the UTB pe-

riod. In what would be a controversial call for some on the sidelines and in the stands, towards the end of the 30 second period Hodges appeared to have gained a reversal,

which would have given Hodges the 2 points and the match. However, the referees inthe match saw it different and the call went in Moore's favor, denying the reversal point

and dropping Hodges out of Championship contention and into the Semi-Finals of the

Consolation Bracket with a UTB 2-1 loss.In the Consolation Semi-Finals Hodges won a nail biter over Circleville's Tyler Knul

by a 2-0 decision to advance to the Consolation Finals for 3rd/4th place. In the Finalsmatch vs. Aaron Gessic from Perry High School, Gessic frustrated Hodges with control

throughout the match and did not allow the Junior Indian to get on track. The nalwhistle sounded and the Senior from Perry prevailed in a hard fought 3-0 win, ending

Hodge's 2014 campaign with a 4th place nish and a 47-6 mark on the season.

Sophomore Tre Campbell entered competition in Columbus off of a dominating per-formance in the BGSU District Meet, capturing the title to advance to State. Campbell's

tournament opened up with a match up vs. Athens's Junior Troy Stalder, who ad-vanced out of the Wilmington District with a fourth place nish. In the opening round

on Thursday night, Campbell dominated Stalder from the opening seconds, and neverallowing the Athens Junior to get on track, posting a 17-3 major decision to move to

the Quarternals in the Championship Bracket. Facing Campbell in round two would

be returning State Champion Sophomore Alex Marinelli out of St. Paris Graham Local, bringing a 45-2 mark to the match. In the opening session on day 2, Campbell took

the mat against the nationally ranked Marinelli looking for the upset, but the GrahamSophomore ended the match early with a 46 second pin in the opening period, dropping

Campbell to the Semi-Finals of the Consolation Bracket. later, on Saturday Night in theFinals session, Marinelli would claim his second straight State Championship.

Campbell's Semi-Final match-up, Senior Alonzo Turner out of Painsville Harvey

came into the state meet as the District Title Champion of the Alliance meet. In thematch held on Saturday morning, March 1, Campbell and Turner fought a very hard

battle and both wrestler's were evenly matched, but Campbell was able to secure the 3-2victory and claim a spot later in the morning in the 3rd/4th place Consolation Finals.

Winding out the tournament, Campbell's match-up in the nal bout was Ben Sch-

ram, a Junior out of Bellbrook High School and the District Runner-Up from the Wilm-

ington District. In the match, Schram was aggressive from the opening whistle, keepingCampbell off balance and at the 2:47 mark in the match gaining the pin and endingCampbell's tournament with a 4th place nish. In speaking with Campbell following the

match, the talented Sophomore stated "I am very happy with how my tournament n-ished out, capturing 4th here at State. I feel this will give me a lot of momentum coming

in next year and working towards that State Championship." Campbell's season ended

with a 42-12 record. In the 170 lb weight class, Senior Aaron Schuette entered competition with high ex-

pectations, having concluded his 2013 campaign with a State Runner-Up showing, TheSenior Indian opened up his 2014 State Meet with a dominating opening Championship

Round pin over Buckeye Valley senior Jim Brittsan (40-10) ending the match at the 1:03mark in the second period to move to Championship Quarternal action. Schuette's 2nd

round opponent, Senior Mike Audi from Poland Seminary entered state action as the

District Title holder from the Alliance District, and brought a 38-4 record to the tourna-ment. In session 2 Friday morning action, Schuette opening the match with Audi with

a quick take down, gaining the advantage and frustrating the Buckeye Valley Seniorthroughout the match. Schuette recorded a dominant 8-0 victory over Audi, advancing

to the championship Semi-Finals.Schuette's Championship Semi-Final opponent would be Carlisle Senior Jimmy

Sandlin. Sandlin entered competition as the Wilmington District Champion, and had

only dropped 1 match all season, bringing a 42-1 record onto the mat. Schuette scoredthe opening points to take a 2-0 lead in the match but the Carlisle Senior grabbed the

lead early in the third period 3-2. Schuette used every ounce of energy and every bitof experience to try and gain the upper hand, but was unable to penetrate Sandlin's

defense and in the end, Schuette experienced a 5-2 setback and dropped to the SeniorSchuette to the Semi-Finals of the Consolation Bracket.

In Saturday morning session three action ,Schuette drew Washington Courthouse

Miami Trace Junior Russell Miller. Schuette and Miller battled for every nal secondof the Cons Semi match, but Miller was able to maintain the upper hand and a disap-

pointed Schuette walked off the mat on the short end of a 5-4 decision, placing theIndian Senior in the 5th/6th place Consolation match. In his nal match of his stellar

career as a Wauseon Indian, Schuette made quick work of Sunbury Big Walnut's AlecEisnnicher by recording the pin at the 37 second mark in the match and completing a

5th place nish at the State Meet. Schuette stated afterwards "I am disappointed this

year, having come off of a Runner-Up nish here last year, I expected more, but thecompetition here is incredibly difcult."

Overall for the Wauseon Indians as a team, the efforts of Hodges, Campbell andSchuette netted 41 points on the meet and placed Wauseon tied for 7th out of a eld of

    82 teams.
