special application for Freeze-Thaw Resistance.

Rise in sustainabilityA major trend and driver for the development of new chemical technology in this sector i s sustainability. Responses have included increased use of recycled materials, development of raw materials from renewable resources, replacement of certain conventionally used chemicals such as formaldehyde that are now considered hazardous to human health, VOC reduction/elimination, and minimisation of the carbon footprint of processes. Improved energy efficiency is an important aspect of sustainability that has received a lot of attention recently, both in new construction through the green bui ld ing movement and in the increased interest in renovation or retrofitting of existing buildings.

EIFS provide an effective solution to improving the energy efficiency of existing structures. They are non-invasive and can be created with customised colours, patterns, and textures. Air barrier materials are becoming more popular as well, particularly liquid-applied systems. These products can be vapour permeable or impermeable and are sprayed on to provide a seamless protective layer, significantly reducing air flow and thereby improving the energy efficiency of the structure. The spray applied liquid air barriers provide a more consistent coating

than conventional paper-based systems, which suffer in comparison because they often tear and must be punctured in order to be attached to the building, automatically reducing their effectiveness.

Increasing use of concreteThe use of concrete is also expanding, particularly in emerging markets where it is used for everything – right from infrastructure projects (roads, bridges, water and sewage treatment systems, etc.) to residential housing and commercial retail development, to construction of factories and other industrial facilities. New chemical technologies are making it possible to improve the environmental profile and performance of this important building material. The ability to give concrete a decorative appearance has also helped drive interest in its use. Admixtures are very important to the performance of concrete. They are formulated blends of specialty chemicals that are designed to control the placeability, finishability, and setting time of concrete.

Significance of waterproofingWaterproofing is another important issue that concerns builders and architects, and several different types of construction chemicals and building products are available to ensure that structures are protected from damage due to moisture. The waterproofing membrane is considered to be the most important component of the roofing system as it serves the main function of keeping water out of the building. Below are some common roof waterproofing membranes used:

a. Liquid-applied membranesLiquid-applied membranes are applied on site in a liquid form which is allowed to set and form into a water impermeable membrane. Bituminous-based (except those containing coal tar) and polymeric-based membranes can be applied when they are cold while those containing coal tar are usually applied when heated. Liquid-applied

membranes are seamless, semi-flexible and easy to apply, detail, maintain and repair. However careful supervision and control during application is needed, particularly in ensuring proper curing of concrete, consistent thickness and uniform.

For instance, the Sikalastic systems are based on two high p e r f o r m a n c e p o l y u r e t h a n e coatings - Sikalastic 601 BC and Sikalastic 621 TC. Sika’s innovative “moisture triggered chemistry”

(MTC) polyurethane technology resists gassing and foaming and is resistant to rain after application more quickly than traditional moisture cure technologies. It cures to a highly durable, seamless, fully bonded, waterproof, elastomeric membrane. While pi t marks may develop due to rainfall , performance of the membrane is not normally compromised.

b. Pre-formed sheet membranesOne type of pre-formed membranes is the polymer-modified bitumen membranes and they are applied by heat or attached with an adhesive. These blended or ‘modified’ asphaltic products are bonded to a high strength fabric of polyester or fiberglass and produced in the form of rolls. They have elongation and recovery properties which make them suitable to protect against stresses created by wind, temperature fluctuation and normal structural expansion and contraction of the

building. Some of these products are also modified to increase their resistance to fire, thus increasing their fire-rating. Styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) rolls are modified with ‘rubbers’ and compatible with petroleum products. Atactic Polypropylene Polymer (APP) rolls are modified with ‘plasticisers’ and not compatible with all petroleum-based products, grease and oils.

Another type of pre-formed membrane is made of Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC). Although PVC is a hard resin, it is modified with the addition of plasticisers to make it more supple and pliable for use as roofing membranes. PVC membranes are mainly produced by either the calendering or extrusion process. In the calendering process, a reinforcement layer of glass fibre or polyester scrim is normally incorporated into the membrane to provide greater strength and dimensional stability. Like all thermoplastic membranes, they turn soft when subjected to heat. Some proprietary membranes

are formulated with heat reflective compounds capable of lowering the surface temperature of the roof membrane by as much as 15%.

Pre-formed waterproof ing membranes generally will perform better than liquid applied membrane as it can bridge over cracks and gaps better. Also, as they are more resistant to indentations caused by traffic, they are suited for large flat roofs areas exposed to foot traffic. However, liquid-applied membrane is still preferred for small roofs and roofs with a lot of obstructions.

An apt example is Dr. Fixit Samshield XL - a self-adhesive waterproofing membrane based on a tropical grade of polymer modified bitumen. The bitumen compound is laminated onto an impervious, non-perforated, cross laminated HDPE film. The membrane is protected on the self-adhesive side with a silicone coated release film. Dr. Fixit Samshield XL conforms to the requirement of BS 8102.

Tata BlueScope Steel’sThermatech TechnologyTata BlueScope Steel has now introduced their Thermatech technology with Colorbond steel, its flagship coated steel brand at the Roof India Exhibition in Chennai. Colorbond steel is one of the world’s most advanced pre-painted steel product for the building and construction industry. Thermatech technology in Colorbond steel helps lower surface temperature by reflecting more solar heat, thereby reducing the heat radiation travelling downwards into the building thus keeping both the roof and interior of the building cooler.

Thermatech technology in Colorbond steel reduces the temperature inside the building by up to 60° C in hot weather, depending upon the level of insulation already installed, thus reducing the need for air conditioning. The company has further expanded its colour range by adding five new colours with high SRI values other than Surfmist (SRI-81); these include Mosaic Blue (SRI-82), Aloe Green (SRI-82), Fantasy Yellow (SRI-82),

Neutral Beige (SRI-80) and Ivory Grey (SRI-80).

Mr. Riten Choudhry, Managing Director, Tata BlueScope Steel Limited says “Colorbond steel with Thermatech solar reflectance technology sets a new benchmark in the industry and provides property owners, architects, builders and developers with a better building material option to keep pace with the changing need of the hour. Su p r e m e ’ s p r o t e c t i v e packaging division plays the role of a solution provider

to clients in diverse industries; specifically in the application areas of packaging and cushioning, insulat ion and construction. The division is a part of the Supreme group, an acknowledged leader of India’s plastic industry, handling over 2,60,000 tonnes of polymers annually and having a group turnover in excess of Rs. 4,500 crores.

The Construction Accessories Division of Supreme has developed customised solutions specifically for construction requirements of various segments. The division offers new generation, better alternative products to conventional materials like rubber, metals, and wood - also being cost effective.

Supreme Industries, which has been offering durable, cost-effective and environment-friendly products for the construction industry for over six decades, counts its products - DURAboardHD100, DURAmembrane INSUshield and INSUreflector among its topline products. The ‘DURA and INSU range of products are used for various applications in the area of construction and thermal insulation respectively.

“The ‘DURA’ range of products is manufactured from virgin raw material and we do not use any CFC / HCFC gases. At every stage of the manufacturing process, a stringent quality check methodology assures the reliability of the products,” says Mr. Ajay Mohta, General Manager, Construction Accessories Division, Supreme Industries Ltd.

Durable Solutions From SupremeThe Supreme Industries provides various durable waterproofing solutions for the Indian construction industry.

The DURA range of products are known for their durability - for the simple reason that they have been developed after strenuous interactions with experts in the field, studying current requirements and emerging trends to cater to the fast-changing demand scenario in the sector.

T h e r a n g e i n c l u d e s DURAboardHD100 (formerly Silflex), which is a cross-linked, pre-moulded, high-performance joint filler for structural expansion of joints in concrete bricks and block works, DURArods (formerly Sil Seal) - expanded polyethylene foam rods as a backup to sealants, DURAroofil (formerly Sil Roofil), which is modern customised, light-weight, resilient, soft, polymer-based closed-cell profi les for PEB structures.

Apart from this, the company also makes available DURAvapour barrier (formerly Sil Vapour Barrier), which is a high-performance multilayer microcell PE film for water vapour barrier applications. S i m i l a r l y, D U R A p r o t e c t o r (formerly Membrane Protection Board), another product of the

company which is chemically cross-linked block foam for protection of waterproofing membranes, l iquid applied waterproofing membranes in horizontal and vertical applications.

DURAfill (formerly known as Silfil) is an alkali-resistant, closed cell polymer-based board for black cotton soil barrier, weak soil foundation and the latest addition to the portfolio is the newly launched DURAmembrane for all types of waterproofing applications.

Among its various innovative products, the company has added Duramembrane, a new offering in the portfolio of competent and durable products for i ts Construction Accessories Division. D U R A m e m b r a n e i s a n e w generation, cost-effective solution for waterproofing of basements and roofs. It is a versatile material, capable of retaining the dryness of concrete, masonry, metal and wood structures. It is also resistant to salts, alkalis and various types of acids. In fact, the product is a high-performance, composite polymeric membrane offering a quick and easy-to-apply system, ensuring hassle-free maximum productivity. The most striking advantage of the product is that it can be used in new constructions and also at the time of repairing old structures.

Interestingly, the company i s t h e o n l y m a n u f a c t u r e r of this type of waterproofing membrane in India, and it has

plans to use DURAmembrane for applications including concrete roof waterproofing, basement waterproofing, water proofing of bathrooms, and terrace gardens.

DURAmembrane is a high-performance composite polymeric membrane, which is durable, lightweight, non-deteriorating, puncture-resistant, and is available in length stretching up to 50 metres. While bitumen disintegrates after contact with water and also catches fungi after which it starts melting during summer due to lessening of its puncture-resistant strength, Duramembrane has a very good puncture resistance of 199 N (Test method - ASTM E154: 1999) and because it is polymer based it will not deteriorate.

Often waterproofing solution systems do not provide any added advantage except waterproofing, whereas Duramembrane is not only 100% waterproof but also an excellent insulating material. Other treatments have a tendency to absorb moisture and conduct heat but Duramembrane does not absorb water at all. Its ‘K’ value does not deteriorate because its inherent closed cell structure ensures truly effective thermal insulation and waterproofing for a lifetime.

In view of the unpredictable climatic conditions in India where the ambient temperature varies between 0 to 50°C, Duramembrane meets the challenges with complete and effortless ease and can withstand temperature ranging from -40 to +115°C. Duramembrane has an excellent elongation and tensile strength that enables it to take all movements in its stride. It is fracture, crumble, shatter and abrasion proof and resistant to most corrosive chemicals.Contact Mr. Ajay Mohta tel: +91 9831020808, 9810495550email: [email protected]: www.supreme.co.in

Last summer I seized the opportunity to help in a program targeted towards

skill enhancement of masons. The program was conducted through an event management company run by my grandmother.

The company amongst a host of activities targeted towards education with a difference and reviving dying arts of India, holds an annual month-long residential program to train unemployed youth

to become masons. Skilled faculty is engaged to introduce, instruct and initiate participants.

The aim of such programs is to empower the youth with a skill, which has a potential of becoming a means of livelihood.

The current program was aimed at skills enhancement and was conducted over two-weeks at Tijara Fort Hotel in Haryana, managed by the Neemrana Hotels group. Here restoration work was still underway. 26 trained and semi-trained masons from neighbouring villages, along with masons already working on the restoration project were invited to enhance their skills. The participants were given boarding and lodging and a stipend equal to their daily wages. Three skilled masons from South India and two trained tile-masters from Delhi conducted

this workshop. The team of tile-masters taught

the eager masons how to lay tiles in a specialised way, using efficient tools that saved time and material. The experts from South India taught three techniques drawn from old skills that were languishing.

The first was the use of ‘Araish’ in constructing large coloured floors and walls on the spot without any joints, giving the appearance of a floor made with one large piece of natural stone. The special polish technique makes the floor brighter and longer lasting.

For an Araish finish on walls, the wall is first roughly plastered with regular plaster, and left for one day after curing with water. Then 2-3 mms of the pigment, which is made into a paste by adding water, is applied on the wall and smoothened

with a towel. It is then left to be cured with water for 12-15 days after which it is smoothened with waterproof sand paper (number 220 first followed by 320). Finally mansion wax is applied, followed by rubbing with coconut fiber sponge for 5-10 minutes to give it a good shine.

For an Araish floor finish, the floor is first flattened, cleaned and surface grips created by chipping sparingly. Then cement water is poured on it. Then the floor is layered with a 2-3mm thickness of a mixture of 4 parts of sieved sand and one part of cement while beating with a hammer to make it hard and dense. Then the floor is kept submerged in water for 12-15 days. After this the prepared colour paste in the desired shade is added and walked upon with a flat slipper. It is left for a day to be cured with water. For the polish the same process of the wall finish is given with the sand paper and wax.

The second skill taught by the experts was to plaster a wall to a glossy finish, which became weather resistant and hence required low maintenance thereafter. Such walls still stand in old forts and palaces. The third skill taught was the building of a thin partition wall that could be only 3” thick.

Interviews with the masons, revealed a disturbing trend. Most of

them wanted their children to work in government offices, rather than continue the masonry tradition, as a desk job was perceived to be more respectable. During the sharing sessions, the masons quickly realised the strengths of learning a skill, as getting a job was not easy. They decided to encourage the younger generation to learn masonry, along with pursuing their education.

In a developing economy such as India’s, it is each citizen’s responsibility to help improve the average income of the population. This program was able to fulfill this objective, along with helping to preserve languishing, yet important, building skills that contributed to India’s rich architectural heritage. However, many more such programs and technical training schools would have to be created to be able to impact the country.

Overall this project was a great success. We were able to fulfill our objectives by empowering the masons with advanced and scarce skills, while instilling a sense of pride in the profession. The masons felt that knowledge of these unique skills would open up alternate job opportunities, resulting in their economic upward mobility. They were eager to make such programs an annual feature. “The Urban Dictionary states ‘Artsy Fartsy’ m e a n s s o m e t h i n g

supposedly highly cultural, which to the regular person may seem merely pretentious.

So we thought it would be fun to turn this meaning over on its head, hence our name is a deliberate paradox. Basically we are you. We create what we would love to keep around our own homes but we won’t mind sharing it with you! Something that is simple and real, art and artefacts that don’t squeeze the juice out of the right side your brain to

Artsy Fartsy!Artsy Fartsy is the new talk of the town that effectively lets us peek into the world of art. understand or scrutinize. A master piece that makes you say - Oh that’s so me! I have to take this home!” expresses Shreya Naik, Founder, Artsy Fartsy as she tells us what the company is really about.

Shreya is an entrepreneur and an avid music lover, so much so that she is the proprietor of her own artist management company - Dream Makers, playing gigs in every nook and corner of the country. Her musical zeal doesn’t end there; she

handles live programming for Blue Frog, the acclaimed best live music venue in India.

After three years of managing creative minds via her talent management company called Dream Makers Entertainment, 25 year old Shreya Naik says she felt inspired to create her own versions of art.

The result was the launch of her new interior and art company called Artsy Fartsy Co in Mumbai that aims at primarily creating extremely affordable and young art.

“I’ve always believed that art cannot exist without freedom. Most artists today either don’t have an outlet or platform for their art, or are expected to create art that is conventional and understandable. The idea behind Artsy Fartsy was to give young talent a platform to do what they are best at - no holds barred. ” Says Shreya.

Artsy Fartsy supports community art apart from managing and promoting graphic artists and art peeps along with art prints and

doodles. The venture also focuses on doodles and an 18th century form of furniture restoration called Découpage. Découpage is the art of decorating an object by gluing coloured paper cutouts onto it in combination with special paint effects. Any object can be découpaged be it a small box, an item of furniture, canvases, mirrors, even musical instruments and their cases. Each layer is sealed with varnish using multiple coats until the “stuck on” appearance disappears and the result looks like painting or inlay work. The traditional technique uses 30 to 40 layers of varnish which are then sanded to a polished finish. The finish once sealed is completely water proof and extremely durable.

In addition to Art, the company also focuses on organising flea markets. They cater to community art that brings together a variety of art forms under the same roof. Currently they are retailing all their art online on Facebook. A retail store is also in the pipeline but perhaps at a later stage. Contacttel: +91 9004744445email: [email protected]
