by my lfredThe President is the fearless leader

of the society. It is the president's jobto coordinate the activities of thesociety, and to act as liaison withother student societies and the outsideworld. I'd like to bring five terms ofEng Soc experience to the president'sjob. During my last two terms astreasurer I've gained a realunderstanding of how Eng Soc worksand how to make it run smoothly. I'vedealt with everything from fixing thephotocopier to bringing Eng Soc outof its 10000 debt. Prior to beingtreasurer I worked as the C&DManager for two terms and at thesame time I was class rep for Hammerand Screw. And it all started in 1Awhen I was Academic Rep. I havebeen involved with the EngineeringHigh School Liaison Committee, withthe Eng Soc ~ u i l i n g committee, andin planning Engweekend. I have alsoworked on improving Eng Soc'sbusiness practices, and on bringingdraft to POETS. It's all been a lot offun especially Edcom for Frosh '92,judging scunt last term, and playingwith the kids at the Canada Day Mini-Olympics.

I believe Eng Soc has something tooffer for everyone, so I 'd like toncourage you a 0 actively

participate. Why not drop by theOrifi ce and find out about the

services, social events, and otheractivities that Eng Soc supports. Ithink i t 's important to have goodcommunication between students, class reps, directors, and the exec, soI ll continue to be there to hear yourconcerns, to answer your questions, orjust to talk. I wanted to startimproving communication this term,so I put photos of all the directors inthe display case in CPH. I'd like to dothis again for all class reps anddirectors ne xt term. Eng Soc is afriendly place where students shouldfeel at home and as they say, whereeverybody knows your name. I'llwork hard to include you in the EngSoc family.

During the winter and fall of 1993we'll have the Bus Push, Orientation, two Engweeks, Oktoberfest,beginning/ end of term parties, gradactivities, pubs, Iron Warriors, semi-formals, Jays games, sports, tournaments, and a million other funactivities. Eng Soc events andactivities are open to everyone and ifyou want help with the organizationthen apply to be a director today.Eng Soc as an establishment is in theprocess of changing, driven by ourhigh growth rate. My experience asTreasurer has prepared me toimprove the business side of oursociety. urrent y, 'm rking toresolve the problem with thecopyright and trademark of our logo,

I f I were elected President: examswould not be abolished, projectcourses would not be banned, the towtrucks and parking staff would notdisappear, the economy would notimmediately improve, you wouldn'tlose 20 lbs, and Elvis would not comeback to life and no I cannot guaranteeyou a job through Co-op

However, i f elected President Iwould try to make your life here inEngineering a little less stressful.Whether you are trying to accessinformation such as old exams andcourse critiques or looking for socialactivities to fill the voids, I will serveyou as best as possible as President.

If you agree that the outdated 'art'of the Engineering buildings needsreplacement or if you are looking forCo-op advice and guidance fromsomeone you trust I will serve you asbest as I can.

If you would like to hear more fromindustry leaders and past graduatesabout choices and careers inEngineering I promise to work closelywith the VP External to bring thesepeople to us as well as strengtheningrelations with the local APEO chapter.

f you are an active member of theengineering society as a director orclass representative I promise to domy best to dissolve inter Society

squabbles and make yourinvolvement as enjoyable as it shouldbe.

I f you would like to take part as anactive member of the EngineeringSociety I can promise to find you aplace in the Society. I personal ly feelthat there is a vast wealth of talentsand resources we can draw uponwithin the Society. There must becountless Disk Jockeys, photographers, video editors, athletes, writers and cartoonists etc., allsearching for an outlet for theirtalents. As President, I would makeevery effort to reach as many peopleas possible and encourage greaterinvolvement with the Society.

For those who do not have thedesire to socialize within theEngineering, all the power to youHowever you should at leastfamiliarize yourself with the servicesthe society offers you. Aside from thepopular collections of old exams, midterms, and course critiques thereare unwant ads, darkroom facilities, humanities lectures and the cheapestphotocopying on campus.

As President, maintaining properrelations with the Dean, his assistantsand other Faculty members are vital.Such issues as funding, policy andspace concerns demand greatattention and these concerns are dealtwith through the Dean. The Deans

on finding an accountant to care forthe C&D, on incorporating the society, and on recording procedures andrecommendations to help futureexecutives.Engineering tradition and history iscolourful and interesting. I would liketo share some of these stories withyou through articles and displays. Onthe subject of displays, Sean and Sergecame up with an idea for PRIDE(People Really Interested in theDiscipline of Engineering). I wouldlike to develop that idea by placingdisplays throughout the halls ofEngineering that celebrate the historyand accomplishments which surroundour discipline.

f Eng Soc is to continue to growand evolve, we must emphasize highschool iaison and the Engineeringimage . I support both of theseprograms with my involvement in the

Assistant is the liaison between theDean and the Engineering Society. Ihave only met Dean Burns once ortwice and I have not yet madeacquaintance with his Assistant,Elaine Thorne. I understand that bothIndividuals have great respect for thework of the Society and I would enjoythe opportunity to fulfil a Professionalrelationship with them.A great deal of the Presidents timeis spent on the Examinations andPromotions committee. When astudent is not promoted the Presidentmust serve as their lawyer, ensuringthat a student understands theworkings of the committee and theoptions they may pursue. During theE and P meetings the President mustserve the student as theirrepresentative. I would take greatpride in helping any fellow student in

high school visits program, the "Dayin the Life of an Engineering Student"photo essay, and the shadowingprogram. I will continue to work withUW Liaison in a joint effort toimprove our school's image and the"Engineering image. WaterlooEngineering continually attracts ahigh percentage of Ontario Scholarsand this indicates that we draw someof the best students in the province. But how many of us knew what toexpect from a life at Waterloo beforeFrosh Week?

Take the opportunity to attend theforums, read the posters and meet thecandidates, then plan to come out andvote on July 16. A vote for Action,Leadership and Accomplishment is avote for Amy L Alfred.

    Vote Amy for President.

such a position and I would do mybest to ensure that they received fairtreatment and all considerations weretaken into account. As a student whohas had some academic difficulties inthe past I understand the sensitivity ofthe entire situation.

I have enjoyed Sean Murphys pasttwo terms as President and I haveappreciated his efforts encourage a'Social' atmosphere. I wish tocontinue this effort and do my part toensure that the five years that ourUndergraduate Degree requires are asrewarding as they can be.

For those of you who have not metme please do I enjoy meeting newpeople and gaining fresh perspectiveson all topics (campaign related ornot.)

Engineering is without contest thebest faculty at Waterloo, and Waterloohas the best Engineering school is thecountry. Why else would you behere? Being the best, however, doesn t mean we can t improveourselves. Engineering is much morethan just classes, labs, tutorials andexams - arguably the most importantpart of our time here is ourparticipation in extra-curricularactivities in which Eng Soc plays acrucial role. Not only is it responsiblefor numerous exciting events likeEng-weekend and raft races, it acts asa liaison between you - WaterlooEngineering students as a whole - andmany outside organisations andassociations. We must ensure that weincrease our profile in the outsideworld, guaranteeing that WaterlooEngineering is universally recognisedto be the best.

As your VP External there are manyways I would like to improveEngineering' s position. First I wouldlike to promote a closer relationshipwith engineering societies at otheruniversities both to gain new ideasand to learn from their mistakes. Iplan also to work hard at bettering thereputation of both engineering andWaterloo in high schools. More of

these students must be encouraged tostick with math and science, and topursue those studies to engineering.A final initiative I plan to undertakeconcerns bringing more conferencesto Waterloo. This would get moreWaterloo students involved, andwould allow us to participate firsthand in the conferences. Eng Soc, andwith it the position of VP Externalhave enormous potential, and I wouldlike to fulfil t in as many ways aspossible.

My first issue concerns thedevelopment of a closer associationwith other engineering societies. Wehave a great deal in common withthese societies - common goals andcommon obstacles. By seeing theirnew ideas, we can make our societyfunction more effectively and bylearning from their mistakes, we canavoid them ourselves. Increasingly, also, issues such as high schoolinterest in our . field, andmisconceptions about our attitudes, are emerging that concern allengineers, and may possibly be bestaddressed communally. Besides, everyone knows engineers are greatpartiers no matter what school they'refrom. The more, the merrier

Secondly, the reputation ofengineering both in high schools andthe general populace is of crucial

importance. Initiatives like theFrontrunner and Shadow programsand Engineering Science Quest arevery worthwhile, and must beactively pursued. I plan to developfurther programs to encourage highschool students (male ND female) intechnical fields. Canada will soon besuffering a shortage of engineers, andit is up to us to perpetuate this fineprofession. We must work also tottract the est students to Waterloomaking our university known formore than just co-op and academics, but also known for its excellent extracurricular activities. We mu ' l workalso to improve our reputation amongthe community, ensuring myths aboutneolithic engineering b haviour arcdispelled. Everyone should r cognihow great we really are

Finally, [ feel it is important to bringmore conferences to Waterloo. Theseforums are key in the development ofnew ideas and new so lution s toproblems facing the engineeringprofession today. Having lheconferences physically at Waterloonot only improves our reputation inthe business community, but allows abroader cross section of ourengineering faculty to benefit fromthem. In general, a select fewinformed students attend suchconferences, and while they gain fromthem, the rest of the faculty is littleimproved. Many engineeringstudents would benefit fromattending such a forum. Possibilitiesfor the near future include the APEOconference or the ESSCO conference. Both are regional conferences thatwould bring stimulating industryspeakers and innovative paneldiscussions to us. Other prospects

worthy of consideration includebringing a national conference toWaterloo (a longer term initiative) orthe developmen t of our ownconference on a subject such asendowment funds. Our facultywould profit greatly by hosting moreconferences.

I m in 2B Chemical and I have beeninvolved in Eng Soc since 1B as a classrep, and in two directorship positionS'.Last term, 1 was director of SFFDebates, and through that bec meinvolved in the Sandford FlemingFoundation (SFF), an inter-universitycharitilblt. org.tnizi\l1on tryil1g 10improv \l\gilH'l'ring duciltionthrough grants, ,wards, tud nt1 ns, and book publishing. A closer relationship with otherengineering societies, a betterreputation among high schools andthe community, and more conferencesto Waterloo are all directions I plan tofollow. If you have any other ideas,I d love to hear them - feel free to stopme in the hallways and tell me aboutthem. Above aU come out and voteon July 16th, and cast your ballot forKim Jones for VP Ex

    rit Uzanby rit Uzan

Let s start with an introduction: myname is rit Uzan and I am runningfor the position of External VicePresident. I am currently in my 2Bterm of mechanical engineering. Myinvolvement with the EngineeringSociety started back in 1B when I wasa class rep and has continued since.

Since then I have organized theShadow Program for high schoolstudents, been a r epr esentativedelegate at the Congress of CanadianEngineering Students, and amcurrently involved in starting up theFrontrunners program. Myinvolvement in all of these projectshas made the importance of the imagewe project as a student body obviousto me . Going into high schools andtalking to the students aboutengineering or bringing the studentshere to show them the daily activitiesis important if we are to keepenrolments increasing with theincreasing demand for engineers inthe workforce. There is also the matterof communication with other

Engineering Societies around thecountry. Our increased awareness oftheir activities not only keeps usinformed of how we are functioningwith respect to the others but alsogives us a chance to get new ideas forfuture events and projects. Theposition of VP External is a liaisonposition set up to ensure that theselines of communication remain openand available to all at all times.

Then there is the social side ofthings. As the current P 'S director Iam completely aware of the amountof class participation in Engsocactivities. I would like to see anincreased level of enthusiasm withinengineering which will uphold ourimage in the eyes of others. We arecurrently one of the most activefaculties and certainly the mostenvied for our tremendous levels ofparticipation in university events.Increased communication within thesociety will increase the awarenesslevels of events, academic or social, and consequently increaseparticipation. Our reputation precedesus - our task is merely to uphold its

What is it that makes theEngineering Society at a t e r l ~ o the.bes t student socie ty in the wo rld ? Ithink the two key ingredients are fullinvolvement and effective teamwork. We currently have the largestfaculty society on campus and things

are only getting better. As Eng Socgrows in size and power, i t isincreasingly important to have anexecutive staff that can worksmoothly and confidently together. An executive must provide directionfor the society and support Hsdirectors who are working hard tomake things happen.

I have been involved with Eng Socnow for four terms. I have served asclass r ep, Director of Special Events, and I m currently working as POETSmanager. Through my involvement Ihave learned how and why thissociety functions well and theimportance of each person who isinvolved. 1 have worked well in thepast with most of the candidates forexecutive positions and I m confidentthat we would make a great team. tis for this reason that I feel I could bean effective member on our next EngSoc executive. After muchconsideration I have decided that Icould best serve our society in theposition of VP-External.As Vice-President, External Affairs,I would like to increase the amount ofcontact with other student societiesacross our country and possiblyaround the world. There are manygreat ideas out there that we coulduse to become l more effectivesociety.

In particular I would initially focuson how other campuses run their co-

op work programs. I feel that oursociety currently has the ability tocreate many improvements for our coop system and the power to bringthese into effect. We ve recently seenhow simple it is to find problems withco-op but we need to be a little moreconstructive and become part of thesolution.

As VP-Ext I would be responsiblefor assisting with severaldirectorships in Eng Soc. With theright people to fill them I feel thatthese positions have great potential toprovide a lot of fun and also helpimprove our image in the community.

The Bus Push will be happeningnext term and we ll need severalenergetic and organized people tomake this event run smoothly. This isa much publicized event around K-Wand how we are seen at thisfund raiser will influence how we areperceived in general. I will spendtime working with these directors andwith Big Sisters of K-W to ensure thatthis event is run better than everbefore.

1 would like to spend time next termworking with the Charities directors. This position can go far in promotingWaterloo Engineering around K-Wand even across the country. Inaddition to the Bus Push I would liketo see a large fundraising event thatinvolves a competition betweenourselves and other facul ties oncampus or perhaps other Engineeringfaculties in Ontario.(Gee, I wonderwho would win ..)

The Public Relations directorshipwill be very important to us nextterm. I t is evident from readingseveral articles in the Imprint thisterm that we have an image problemon campus as wel l as off. I would be

high standards. So basically that s what it s allabout. A liaison position that will helplead the society through informative, enthusiastic, and eventful terms. Themost important thing to remember isthat as a student society we are here

working with this director to solvethis problem by submitting articles tothe Imprint and press statements tolocal papers and other media. 1 knowthat we re the best society around anddeserve to be recognized as such.I have spent some time discussingthe PRIDE program with Steve (Prezcandidate) and I think it has greatpotent ial. Basically, it would involvelocating Waterloo Engineeringgraduates who have gone on to dogreat things or work on importantprojects. These individuals wouldthen be recognized with photographsand plaques hung around ourengineering buildings. Anotheraspect of the project would be toreplace the horrid art work in EL andelsewhere with large pictures of greatengineering accomplishments. Weshould be proud to be students at thebest engineering school there is.

f you nave any ideas for Eng Soc or

    Thursday, 9 July, 1992

to represent and serve the needs ofyou, the students. I f there are anymatters which you feel need to beaddressed, any issues that need to bediscussed, or any parties that need tobe thrown we are open to yoursuggestions.

would just like to chat about mine, 1would really enjoy meeting you. EngSoc is always looking for new peopleto become involved. Just ask aroundPOETS on Thursday or Friday andsomeone can point me out.I know that all ten of the candidateshave put a lot of time and effort intothe Engineering Society in the pastand their dedication is shown in thecommitment they are willing to makeby becoming a member of theexecutive. I think the least thesepeople deserve is for you to considerall the candidates and let us knowwho you want to be leading yoursociety for the next eight months.Your concerns are important so pleasedon t forget to vote on July 16.

Thursday, 9 July, 1992 Iron WarriorRobert McGeachyby Robert McGeachy

Hello. My name is Rob McGeachy, and I am running for the position ofPresident, EngSoc B.

Lately there has been a lot ofdiscussion about the work-load andhassles the EngSoc executive is putthrough, and why anyone in theirright mind would subject themselvesto that kind of additional stress. However, the very reason I feel sostrongly compelled to run forPresident is because I am excited andenthusiastic about the role of EngSocnow, and its future at this University. What EngSoc needs is a solidunderstanding of its present and astrong vision for its future. I feel Ihave the right combination ofexperience and enthusiasm for thatjob.EngSoc can be basically described asa business, which provides services toits customers (all students in theFaculty of Engineering) who pay$10.50 a term to have access to theseservices. These services include theongoing ones like the Orifice, POETS,the C&D, the garage, the darkroom,UnwantAds, Old Midterms, and soon, and the special events like EngWeek and Eng Weekend, Semi-formaland Eng Ball, Bus Push, Orientation,Blue Jays road trips and many more.Though $10.50 is a great bargain, I stillwant to s a better deal for thecustomer. This requires that the

regular services are better maintainedand more accessible, and that thespecial events are well planned andpromoted to reach the largest numberof students as possible.

One of the lesser known roles of thepresident is that of the representativeof the Engineering Society to thedifferent student organizations acrosscampus, and to the administration ofthis University. In my involvementwith different events across campus, Ifind that the chief problems theEngineering Society encounters is alack of awareness of what it is we doover here, and a different perceptionof Engineers than we might feel isaccurate. I want to work to improvethis apparent image problem by betterrepresentation on these variouscommittees, and by more cooperationwith other faculties by organizingsome events in conjunction with othersocieties. Image problems aregenerally based 01\ lack ofinformation; i f the rest of theUniversity can get to know us a littlebetter, we can work to improve thisimage.

One of the more pressing issues forme is the evolution of the EngineeringSociety: Each term I have been here, Ihave seen the Society grow. There areseveral more directorships now, threefull time employees (possible four inthe near future), and bigger and betteractivities. Along with this growth isadded responsibility, and added

hassles, and the Society is reaching apoint where some fundamentalchoices about its structure have to betaken into consideration. Althoughdiscussion is just beginning, I want towork with this Society and A-Soc toensure that any decision process isthorough and that the best interests ofthe members of the EngineeringSociety (YOU ) are taken intoconsideration. The last issue that I want to raise isthat of accessibility. As President, Iwould have an open-door policy that Iwould make widely known. I want tonot only help straighten out problemsthat students run into, but also togather feedback from students anddirectors on how the Society has beendoing, and what steps can be taken toimprove it.I have been involved in EngSoc forfour years now, as I have beenpursuing a double degree in Systems. . e and a Bachelor ofArts. Two of those years I spent withEngSoc A (before I saw the light). With this additional experience, I feelI have a unique perspectiv) on thEngineering Society B; how the twostreams interact, and how the So ietyinteracts with the rest of theUniversity.

Over the past four years, J havebeen involved in organizing manydifferent activities in Engineering. Ihave a few different events that wereparticularly enjoyable for me toorganize. The first was being involvedin the creation of TAL-ENG ( Winter'91 ), and the organization anddirection of the second and third B-Soc shows in Fall '91 and theupcoming show July 19 (blatant plug),to make TAL-ENG one of EngSoc sbiggest single event ou tside oforientation. As Arts director for thepast two terms I have also had thepleasure of directing the BNADspecial edition last fall.

The most important Engineeringevent I was involved with was

    Page 3

Orientation week '91. As co-chair withMarty and Dave, we planned andorganized the week s activities. Thisevent is the frosh s first encounterwith EngSoc; it helps establish thespirit and pride that this faculty hasand is the source of energy andenthusiasm for the rest of EngSoc sevents. To see the level ofinvolvement from the first yearstudents over the past year withEngSoc makes me believe we didsomething right last September.

However, the event that has meantthe most to me, and that helped medecide to run for President was not anEngineering event, but the pastCanada Day celebrations that I helpedorganized for the Federation ofstudents. The operations committee(Dave Kruis and 1) laid out theactivities, ordered and set-up all theequipment, ran the events during theday, and cleaned up the next dayalon with our dedicated team ofvolunteers). t was thrilling to ssixty-five thousand people onColumbia Fields enjoying thefir works at tlH. nd of the d 1Y butth grentc t source of pride (or nw san Engineer w.\S to S l l how ourvolunteers (who made lip h.:lIf of the300 volunteers) totally out 1.155 d theother faculties . They not only helpedDragana and Alison run theChildren s Olympics, but pitched in atcone ssions, candle sales, and tayedthrough to clean up nnd take downthe stage aft r everyoM had gonehome. That is what Engineering spiritis all about.

To dos I just want to say that, regardless of your choice for presidentor any of the other positions, the mostimportant thing is that you exerciseyour right to vote on July 16. Electionswill be taking place from 8:30 am to4:30 pm in CPH foyer. Don t forgetyour student card

When I first came to WaterlooEngineering I was greeted by a wellorganized and well run frosh weekthat has left a lasting impression ofwhat engineering attitude and energyis all about. It is this same enthusiasmthat I wish to bring to the position ofV.P. Internal.I will be going into my 2A term inJanuary. Since starting here I havewon a Psycho Frosh award, held theposition of Co-Social director, becomeinvolved in the FrontrunnersEngineering Awareness Program andin the process learned about how thesociety works and what it stands for.

The regular responsibilities ofInternal Vice President includekeeping minutes at EngineeringSociety meetings and interfacing withother faculties in order to plan and

organize events or handle problemsthat may arise. The third requirem entis to aid the Engineering SocietyDirectors in any way necessary, (ie.finding information or resources), toensure job completion and quality. Ihope to bring increased co-operationand communication between theDirectors at the planning stage ofevents. This would result in a moreorganized society that can, in turn, present high quality events for allengineering society members. Thatincludes You

I also believe that this approach canresult in increased society integrityand spirit. These qualities, combinedwith a positive view of what oursociety represen ts will ensure that theUniversity of Waterloo EngineeringSociety will remain something to beproud of.

Michael D. Popikby Michael D Popik

Hey all you crazy wild engineers, and you quiet ones too. My name isMichael D. Popik, and I am runningfor the position of V.P. Internal at theEng?oc elections taking place July 16,1991.

First a little about myself. I grow upin Mississauga and went the school inMalton, Mississauga. I came to theUniversity of Waterloo to studyEngineering in 1989 (because I wanteda future). Since then I have beeninvolved in the Engin eerin g SOciety. Ieven held the pOSition of p ...S directorlast term. During my time here atWaterloo, I have been acquaintedwith many people including DaveMartin, the president of theFederation of Students. I have alsobeen present at most EngSocmeetings, Joint Council meetings andthis weekend I am even attending theAnnual General Meeting of theEngineering Student Societies ofOntario.

My father use to tell me and mybrothers that, 1t is very easy to breakone twig, but it is much harder tobreak four.' and I say that it is evenharder to break a thousand twigs. Ifany group of people, be it fourbrothers or thousands of engineers, work together and support each other, there is no way anybody can destroythem.

I would like to take my hat off toSean Murphy. He has held thisSOciety together that anyone canimagine. However this is not themain job of the president, it is themain job of the V.P. Internal. At timesthere are more pressing issues for thepresident to attend to, and that is whythe posi tion of V.P. Internal exists.

Presently there is tension betweencertain members of the society. TheV.P. Internal in this case should sitdown with these members and workout their differences. I can not stressenough how important it is to keep not want the responsibilities of athe society working together in director, I encourage you to come toharmony. meetings, and tell us you views, and

For the society to function smoothly just become involved in theit needs many volunteers. These Engineering Society.volunteers work as directors under I welcome any questions thatthe executives. I want to encourage anybody would have. If you do notall of you to do your part in EngSoc, know me yet, please don t be shy, andand sign yourselves and your friends introduce yourself to me. I loveto a directors position. You meet meeting new people, and I usuallymany, many, many people, and t is don t bite (but I can if you want).

    Thursday, 9 July, 1992

have to say about themselves, notwhat others have to say about them. Please come out on July 16, and castyour vote.

And remember:I always go the distance, right up to

the ball, there s nothing half wayabout your ballot, your X says it all

    I am not a person that spreadsrumours but this one was too good togive up. It has been said that Feds areafraid of us. They fear that theEngineering Society is beco ming moreand more powerful. The reason thatwe are becoming so powerful isbecause we learned to work together,and stick by each other. ~ t a g ~ t ~ e ~ ~ c l ~ u ~ t ~ P ~ a s e l i s ~ n _ ~ _ w h a t t h e c a ~ n ~ d i d a ~ s ~

By this Imean, that as Treasurer, I would makemyself available to assist any group infund-raising activities. ie: ConcreteToboggan, 4th year projects, Scunt,Charities, etc. I would also like to seethe Treasurer become more involvedin finances outside of Eng Soc likeWEEF, FED endowment, Co-op fees,CKMS radio, and Imprint. Not tokeep strict tabs on them, but toinvestigate where and how yourmoney is being spent. I believe EngSoc is a continuously growing andchanging entity and in order to keep itgoing forward, the roles of thoseinvolved must change with it.

by olin HungHi My name is Colin Hung and

I'm one of the candidates running forthe position of Treasurer. I'm suremost of you don't know who I am(unless you've read my IW articles) soI am writing this article to tell you alittle about myself and about why I'dmake a good Treasurer.Who am I? That's a goodquestion (and a great song from LesMiz). But let's see .. who Iam ..hmmmmmm. Well, currentlyI'm a C&D manager (3rd term) andI'm also the Eng Soc representative onthe FED Student Life FundCommittee. In the past, I've been aclass treasur er (2 terms), a floor rep, ahouse treasurer and an assistant to theFED Prez. Oh yeah, I'm also a 3AMechanical studen t.What am I? - A ScorpioWhy am I? -Please ask the bigguy in heavenWhy Me? An excellentquestion and one that requires a

serious answer. I am a dedicated, trustworthy, honest individual who isnot afraid of hard work to get a jobdone. I'm also dependable, organizedand I get along with everyone;qualities that a good Treasurer mustpossess. Having been a C Dmanager for the past 3 terms, I havebecome very familiar with thefinancial operations of Eng Soc and Ibelieve that I can apply what I'velearned to the position of Treasurer. I fI am elected, I will bring with me, awealth of experience experience thatwill most certainly be put to use foryou.

How am I? - Fine. Thanks forasking. When am I? - Check yourgrammar. What is my vision for the future?- For the future, I see theresponsibilities of the Treasurerexpanding beyond just balancing theEng Soc budget . I intend to make theTreasurer's position moreapproachable and accessible to

Who did the IW mean they allegedthat I was involved with a former FedPrez?- The IW was referring to myassistance to former FED presidentJohn Leddy who was my Don at thetime of his election. So I did in fact

spend a few nights with him in thesame house (in VI). Thanks a lotScottIn closing I'd like urge everyone tocome out and vote on July 16 as thisterm we actually going have more

Dave Mortonby Dave MortonThe position of Endowment Directoris one of responsibility, management

and diplo.macy. The director isentrusted with carrying out the wishesof the Board of Directors and of theEngineering membership as a whole. This calls for a sense of commitment, effective time management and a gooddeal of people skills. The EndowmentDirector is responsible for administeringVoluntary Student Contributionrefunds, chairing Funding Council andBoard of Directors meetings, solicitingfunding proposals, running the fundsallocation votes, and distributing themoney to the various projects.Advertising, fund raising and publicrelations are also par t of the endowmentdirector's role, as well all the specialactivities he/she may be involved in.For this reason time management andthe ability to delegate are veryimportant.

Over the past year, I have tried toexpand and fill out the role of

Endowment Director. Of necessity, thefirst directors were primarily concernedwith legal issues, getting constitutionalapproval by both student bodies andthe UW Board of Directors, ensuringcharitable organization status, and soon. As the Endowment grew under mytenure, I have attempted to increase ourinvolvement in other sectors. Inconjunction with the Office ofDevelopment and the ScienceEndowment, we have conducted a fundraising campaign towards the co-opemployers, known as the EmployerMatching Contrib ution program. Aspart of this campaign I have beenwriting letters, talking to companies andmaking presentations. That campaignhas yielded 3 definite donors, meaningcompanies who have agreed to make anongoing contribution, year after year.Other special projects I have beeninvolved in include an investigation intohow the university invests our moneyand alternate methods of investing it,and finally advertising and publicrelations have been an important

priority of my administration. Duringmy first on stream semester Iconcentrated on external pUblicity andgeneral awareness. As part of thisfocus, I met with the Federation ofStudents, the Dean of Engineering andthe Science Endowment Foundation.During my second term I haveconcentrated on advertising andaccesibility within the engineeringfacul'ty. As part of this focus, I havepublished consistently within the IronWarrior, appointed an advertisingdirector, and sought input regard ing theendowment and my performance atevery opportunity. Over the next year, Isee tremendous opportunities forgrowth within the Endowment. TheEmployer Matching Contributioncampaign will be continued, streamlined and increased to take inmore corporations. The Endowmentreceives roughly $350 000 a yearthrough the Voluntary StudentContributions. f we can get co-opemployers to match even a part of that,we will increase our revenuesubstantially. Advertismg and publicrelations will be another high priority, which cannot be understated. If you are

unaware of the bene fils of theendowment to you, they lose all theirsignificance. The past performance ofthe WEEF and its power to help youreducation must be demonstrated to theengineering population. Theendowment is currently pooling itsinvestment income over the period ofone year, and the combined funds willgive us the leverage to fund even largerand more important projects.

Let me know what you want and letme put it into action.
