It's now December 8, 1992. I haven't ever &m merat Newalettm at once. I usually enjoy the two month rest between issues. But here goes again. There are no reports of any new K towns s i n e yesterday. Sorry about that!

Greig has d i d thc computer printout and it takes kss space now for the same amount of information. K canals rcportcd arc still &own by entry of a timcmark in the appmpiatc spacc for the date. Errors are denoted by the 1et.b E and by a footnote. BLE stands for BL timemark with an e m r date. The equal sign (=) represents the three- line timemark m . In early 1992, Alice vimtcd Portage La Prairie and chatted with the postmaster there. The K machine was still used then for local mail (about 2000 pieces of mail per day). The machine is still kxial no. 02399, model F-11 - the original machine.

The 6 and 7 of 16 and 17 date marks are perfectly snperimposed. fThe only explrination I can think uf is that the envtlopt went through the machine twice, once on each day. HAWKESBURY, ON

Hawkesbury, Ontario is a Klusstndorf town that is a bit more interesting to study than the average. The EKU is reputed to be 02 XI1 1983. 1 record TM -15 ustd on 09 to 15 XI1 1983. By 29 XI1 1983, the = timemark was in use and also on 30 Xn. In Januzay 1984, there is a report of TM 1 on 03 I 1984. By 17 I 1984, the BL timemark was in use until 20 VII 1984. On 7 VIII 1984, wc find TM 3 until 27 VIII 1984 and by 22 M 1984 we have TM 2 in use until 27 M I 1984. In ,1985, timemark 4 is found in use from 04 I 1985 to 13 M I 1985. In 1986, TM 5 is found from 11 I 1986 to 30 XI1 1986. On 13 11 1986, we find an error of 13 11 1997.6, with another new timemark. During 1987, there is TM -08 from 2 I 1987 to 09 X 1987 and then TM -10 from 13 X 1987 untd 29 VI 1988. Another TM, -20, then comes into use from 4 VII 1987 to 29 XI1 1988. In 1989, again a new timemark is used from 03 I 1989 to mid-July at kast - timtmark +7.

In order of appearance, this gives us timemarks -15, =, 1, BL, 3, 2, 4, 5, .6, -08, -10, -20, and =7. That makes a total of 13 different timemarks in just over five ytare used in thie one town. The pattern of use shows no overlaps and only one error. I am s u n with fuhm rtports wit can close the date gaps in tht above usages.

It is probable that the report of 3 I 1984 1 is not a 1 but the end of the TM roll.

SECHELT, BC

While dearing up some stuff, I found an old artidc from Linns dated April 2, 1984. The article noted the following:

Canada Post was replacing cancelling devices in about 500 post offices. Being replaced were about 320 Piulty-Bow- Modd D and 180 P-B Model DD machines in small and medium post offices that processed 2000 to 5000 pieces of mail daily. Pitney-Bowes could no longer supply parts for these machines which Canada Post rented, as they werc discontinued. From Klnsscndorf of W n , G e r m a ~ ~ ~ , Canada Post purchased 320 Model D machincs to repla# the Pitncy-Bowa D machines. The distribution was 40 machines p a month, starting in October 1983. The old machina werc bang Ictxlrncd to Pitney-Bows. At that time, the replacements for the DD machines had not arrived (the IPS machines).

The SECHELT, BC .oddball cancel often confused with Klusstndorfs is a prototype by IPS (International Peripheral Systems) Model 4D2, an old hand machine which the company had motorized. This machine was turned down. Stchelt was "dcsparakly" in need of a cancelling machine and the rcjcctcd prototypc was purchased and sent there. It will probably remain unique.

LA BAIE. Pq. This is a discontinued K town. Heae is a short history of the K cancellations of this town. The EKU is 26 IV 1984 BL with a supporting strike of 27 IV 1984 BL also reported. Timemark 9 appcaxs only on 23 V 1986 at the end of a period of mom (21 V 1985 0 for 21 V 1986 0) and before 28 V 1986 BL n o d . It is possibk that timemark 1 is the end of the roll. The data of usage of this thnemark and also -19 are unreported at present.
