Kevin Bailey, Joint First Team Manager

Saturday saw us get the first point of our reign at the Knappers in a 1-1 draw away to Banstead. Whilst we would have been happier with 3, we are taking the positives out of the game and are pleased that the team have stopped the run of 5 consecutive league defeats. A lack of intensity in the second half meant that we were unable to build on a promising first half display. Losing 1-0, it took a good late header from Charlie Postance to salvage a point which over the 90 minutes was well deserved.

Within the last week or so we have started to see a more settled squad which with a few more additions I believe is going to be more than capable of putting together some good performance, and more importantly results. We are starting to look more organised and as the players get to know each other better that will only improve. Since Phil and I have come into the club the lads have worked very hard to adapt to the changes we have been making and this has shown with the continued improvement on the field. Off the field the atmosphere is good. Team spirit is high, everyone at the club is feeling positive and we are all working very hard to improve things on a daily basis. We would like to thank everyone for their help and support in the few weeks we have been at the club and thank the chairman and his team for the hard work that they have put in which has enabled us to make large strides in a reasonably short space of time. Tonight we are looking forward to an exciting cup game against our local rivals and my previous club Westfield. It is a great chance for us to forget our league form and put in a morale boosting performance which will in turn give us that extra confidence to continue our improvement in the league and really kick on.

MATCH REPORT

Combined Counties League Division One September 22nd 2012 Redding Way K.O 3.00pm

Knaphill 2 AFC Croydon athletic 3

A first home league win still eludes Knaphill after five home encounters this season. But they deserved to come out of Saturday’s game against newcomers AFC Croydon Athletic, with at least a point. They were thwarted in the last couple of minutes of an equaliser when Charlie Postance’s perfect header was tipped over the bar by the keeper. With seven recent signings in the starting line up, Knaphill had a bright opening spell, seeing two early attempts on goal fly over the bar. An fairly evenly match first half hour, saw Knaphill take the lead when Alex Headland took his chance well to make it 1-0, the first goal scored following four previous goalless league games. The visitors went close to a quick equaliser three minutes later with a shot that glanced off the far post. Knaphill’s lead however lasted just nine minutes before AFC Croydon equalised with a goal from former Knaphill player Ed Cardona who slotted the ball home from eight yards in the 36th minute. It was down to keeperNick McGregor to deny a second goal with a timely save from Joseph Loyza shortly before halftime. Despite creating openings for goal scoring opportunities in the second half, Knaphill conceded a second goal as AFC Croydon took a 2-1 lead in the 66th minute when Lee Jansen had sufficient time and space to fire past McGregor. By not having enough cutting edge in their finishing, Knaphill were unable to get back on level terms, and the visitors enhanced on their lead with a third goal after 70 minutes from Joseph Loyza. AFC Croydon during that period of the two goals, were making some swift and dangerous breaks, whilst Knaphill needed to dig deep and push and pressure their opponents. A well engineered move after 76 minutes saw Danny Cox deliver a perfect pass across to Headland who struck an excellent finish into the far corner of goal to make it 3-2. Then deep into stoppage time, substitute Charlie Postance used his height to plant a powerful header towards goal forcing the visitors keeper to make a fine save by tipping the effort over the bar to deny what would have been a deserved equaliser. Team: McGregor, Cox, McShane, Pitcher(Smith 43mins), Doble, Niven(Dart 80mins), Pym(Postance 71mins), Felgate, Headland, Hennessey, Ruggles. Scorer: Headland 31mins & 76mins

MATCH REPORT

Combined Counties League Division One September 29th 2012 Merland Rise K.O 3.00pm

BANSTEAD ATHELTIC 1 KNAPHILL 1

Knaphill halted their run of five consecutive league defeats with a valuable point away to Banstead on Saturday. Having created numerous goal scoring chances, they could have come away with all three had their finishing been more accurate. But a late goal from Charlie Postance gave them a share of the spoils after they had gone behind on the hour from a rather harsh penalty decision that gave Banstead the lead on the hour. It wasn’t until the 20th minute that Knaphill delivered their first direct and telling shot goal when an effort from Postance was turned away for a corner. Then in quick succession dur-ing the 23rd minute, efforts from Daryn Hennessy and Phil Ruggles were both denied by the keeper. Despite creating more, Knaphill were unable to deliver the final finish to break the deadlock. Whilst the Banstead keeper had more to do, his opposite number Nick McGregor didn’t have a serious save to make until the 28th minute. With Ruggles still seeking to open his account up front for Knaphill, a 40th minute header was just over the bar, and their final threat on a goalless first half. In the second half, both sides battled away to make a breakthrough, and after 56 minutes Banstead almost struck the first blow, only for the effort to hit the bar. But four minutes later, they did take the lead with a rather harsh penalty decision. There were some scrappy moments in the half with both sides suffering from some stray passing. However, Knaphill pressed more in the latter stages of the game and in a crowded goalmouth, Postance rose above the home defenders to head home the equaliser for the visitors after 85 minutes. A late chance came and went for Knaphill when substitute Kirk Smith saw his shot swerve wide of the post in the 90th minute. Knaphill: McGregor, Cox, McShane, Perks(Roissetter 84mins), Doble, Niven, Hennessey, Felgate, Ruggles, Postance, Headland(Smith 67mins). Scorer: Postance 85mins

GU21 News around the ground

Theknappers

Good evening and welcome to Westfield, their players, officials and supporters, and tonight’s three match officials for this Division One Challenge Cup 2ndround match, with both Clubs receiving a bye in this season’s competition and straight into the second round. Local derby games always provide that extra interest in League games, and Cup matches are no different, but this is the earliest the two clubs have met in the season with still two league encounters to come. Westfield are enjoying a good first couple of months of the season, whilst Knaphill have had a struggling time which has seen change of management and outgoing and incoming players. In the League, Westfield have leapt up to third place in the table following their 3-2 home win against Feltham on Saturday, their seventh win in nine games. Contrast to Knaphill’s position at the moment where we linger in the lower regions of the table, and area we’ve never been before! But the team broke the run of five defeats last weekend when they drew 1-1 away to Banstead Athletic. Goalless at halftime, it was Banstead who broke the deadlock through a penalty on the hour, and a valuable point was gained after 85 minutes when Charlie Postance headed home the equaliser. Match report on the game can be found elsewhere in this programme. On the same afternoon, our Reserves were involved in a nine goal thriller against CB Hounslow at Redding Way. At one stage Knaphill were leading 4-2, but that was wiped out when the visitors netted three more goals to run out 5-4 winners. There were plenty of goals earlier in the week too when Knaphill U18s were away to Cove U18s in the Southern Youth League Cup, chalking up a 5-1 win with four of the goals coming in the second half . Steve Kemp(2), Niall McInerney(2 ) , and Robert Litchfield were the goalscorers. Knaphill are will be away again in the next round when they will play the winners of the Dorking/South Park tie on 29th October. The Youth team play their first home League game of the season when they entertain Ash United U18s at Redding Way this Thursday 4th October kick off 7.30pm. Knaphill Ladies were in action ten days ago, narrowly losing 3-2 away to Leyton Ladies. However they progressed to the next round of the Women’s FA Cup with a 3-2 win Price Of Wales Ladies FC courtesy of Kerrie Allen, Emma Lawrence and Nicola Marr. Their next home game is on Sunday 14th October when they play hosts to MSA Ladies.

October is a busy month for our first team with eight games, the first of those being tonight. This Saturday Knaphill are away to Staines Lammas(at Ashford Town’s ground)kick off 3pm. Then back to Cup duty next Tuesday at Redding Way with a Premier Challenge Cup 2nd round match against Mole Valley SCR, kick off 7.30pm. The halfway stage of those eight games comes on Saturday 13th October at home to Worcester Park. Saturday 13th October is Non-League Day, a celebration of the semi-professional and amateur game, and a chance for fans of bigger clubs to experience football at a level they maybe otherwise unfamiliar with. Moreover it helps promote hundreds of clubs across the country who are almost exclusively run by volunteers, and do so much good for the local community. There are no Premier or Championship matches on that day, and given the financial climate, clubs outside the Football League need all the support they can get. So come on down to Redding Way when Knaphill will be hosting Worcester Park in Division One kick off 3pm. Support Knaphill FC and mention the Non-League day to all your sporting friends and family. The Club will be offering free hot drinks for all visitors and supporters on the day.

Enjoy the game……… Bryan

Introducing

Westfield fc

Theknappers

The Club was formed in 1953 as Westfield Boys Club playing in the Woking and District League and also running a youth team. From the start the Club had success in the competitions entered. Among the trophy’s won in the early years were the Surrey Youth Invitation Cup in 1953/54, the Surrey Junior Charity Cup in 1954/55 and 1955/56, the Surrey Junior Cup at the first attempt in 1955/56 and the Surrey Youth Cup in 1956/57. Following several seasons in local league football the Club made the break into Surrey Intermediate Football using the present ground at Woking Park, Kingfield. Successes soon came and, after becoming League Champions and League Cup winners on several occasions in the subsequent seasons, the Club decided to apply for senior status. The application was accepted in 1964 and after one season in the Parthenon League, Westfield met the necessary ground grading requirements and joined the Surrey Senior League. Westfield’s future success in senior football sprang from their ability to attract the best local youngsters and they were successful in winning the Surrey Youth Cup again in 1966/67 and 1969/70 and the Surrey Youth Shield in 1969/70 and 1970/71. This talent matured and there followed three tremendous seasons for the senior side when they won the Surrey Senior League Cup in 1971/72, followed by the League and Cup double in 1972/73 and the League Championship again in 1973/74. The Surrey Senior League was disbanded and reformed as the Combined Counties Football League in 1978 and Westfield became founder members and retained membership to date. Success, however, has been more difficult to achieve and in recent times the closest the senior team has come to honours was in 1989/90 when they lost the final of the Combined Counties League Cup to Hartley Wintney in extra time. Season 2000/01 saw the Club enter the Carlsberg FA Vase for the first time, performing beyond expectations before losing in the Fourth Round to Ryman League Arlesey Town, on the way beating Wantage Town, Lewes and Bowers United. Westfield continued to compete at youth level and they won the Combined Counties Youth League Cup in 1991/92 as well as being runners-up in the League. Following the installation of floodlights in 1998 the U18 team joined the Southern Youth Floodlight League as members of the Western Division. The Club also run an U16 team playing in the West Surrey Youth League.

The latest news from the reserves…..with Manager Paul Dyer

theknappers

Knaphill Reserves 4 v CB Hounslow Utd Reserves 5 - 29/9/2012 After a week off we came up against a big strong hounslow team that was going to be a test for the team with a average age of 19. We started on the back foot and went 1 nil down on 10 minutes, we drew level on 13 minutes with a well taken goal by Lee Cope. On 30 minutes we went 2-1 down with some shocking defending on 35 minutes however we hit the crossbar on 40 minutes. We got it back to 2-2 with a headed goal by impressive Jonny Coates to go in level at half time. At half time we were forced to make a change bringing James Green off with damaged ribs to be replaced by Ben Landi. On 50 minutes Ryan Pilley scored a great free kick to put us in front but we rode our luck from then only for Lee Cope to grab his second and our fourth. Being such a young team we then showed are inexperiance of not being able to see the game out and defend to hold on for the win. With 20 minutes left our defending and marking was shocking and let Hounslow score three times to eventuallyend up losing 5-4. I hope the players have learnt after this game we are playing men’s football at a good standard and not sunday park football, we need to work hard and concerntrate for 90 minutes to see the game out to get the result we deserved but in the end we threw away. Our next game is at home to Ash Utd so hopefully we can learn and get back to winning ways again.

We’ve got youth on our side with Nick Croshaw – Youth Team Secretary

Knaphill’s U18’s continue to frustrate and amaze at the same time. Their last match was on Wednesday night when at a misty Oak Farm they eventually overcame a tough Cove side 5-1, but with 4 goals in the second half it was too tight to call in the first half. This was the 1st round of the Southern Youth League Challenge Cup and Knaphill first of three trips to Oak Farm in the next few weeks as we return to Oak Farm for a League match against Cove, then we are back on the 24th October to play Cove’s SYL tenant’s, Shalford in another League game. With a number of players unavailable or injured this cup tie gave Manager Gary Taylor the opportunity to try a few changes in personnel and formation. Recently a back three of Josh Dawber, Jack Lewis and Ahmed Abdali have proved themselves to be a very accomplished defensive team and it was the midfield and attack which saw the majority of the changes. Niall McInerney returned to the midfield after injury and Kallum Parker-Andrew make his second start of the season on the wide left; Matt Willard took over in goal for his second start and with Mikhail McLaughlin out with a facial injury it was Stevie Kemp who started up front with Jamal Rodney. The first half saw Cove quickly out of the blocks and Knaphill took a while to get up to speed, when they did it was Stevie Kemp who was released four times past a static Cove defence only to shoot wide or have the Cove keeper pull of a fine stop. It wasn’t until the half hour mark when a Craig Taylor fee kick was dropped by the Cove keeper and Jonny Coats was first to react by hitting the ball at the keeper and when the rebound fell to Steve Kemp three yards out, he tapped home for Knaphill’s opening goal. Ten minutes later Cove equalised when the Knappers lost the ball in midfield and a cheeky chip from all of 30 yards sailed over Matt Willard’s head and into the back of the net. The second half started with two quick Cove corners and The Knappers on the back foot, with Jamal in deep conversation with the referee with first change was made with Lois Herbert coming on in midfield and Niall McInerney pushing up front. This move paid immediate dividends as 3 minutes later a Steve Kemp cross from the left was met by Niall for Knaphill to take a 2-1 lead. Just 4 minutes later a corner was headed in by Steve for 3-1. Nathan Leonard then came on for Craig Taylor and marker his appearance by having a fierce shot saved by the keeper and Cove started to fight back by hitting the bar shortly afterwards. With 20 minutes left Kallum came off after good work down the left and was replaced by Robert Litchfield.

Ten minutes before the end, the Cove keeper inexplicably threw the ball at a Knaphill player after being awarded a free kick and the Referee had no choice but to send him off. The Cove replacement keeper was quickly in action as Robert Litchfield had a shot saved from a Jonny Coats free kick. In the 86 minute Niall broke down the left and shot tamely at the keeper who spooned the ball out for a corner. When the ball came in it was a defensive header that rebounded off Niall and into the far corner of the net. Two minutes later Robert broke through a static Cove defence and was pushed I the box, as he tried to stay on his feet he scooped the ball over the keeper and into the net for number five. This win means a trip to either Dorking or South Park in the second round in 4 weeks time. The team’s next game is the first home game of the season on Thursday 4th October (KO 7.30pm) with the visit of Ash United to Redding Way. The following Monday 8th October sees the visit of Windsor to Redding Way as The Knappers start their third campaign in the Grant-McLellan Youth Cup for teams in The Combined Counties League, in which The Knappers have been runners-up for the last two years.
