Proclamation of the WordAfter each reading the reader will say:Reader Hear what the Spirit is saying to the church. All Thanks be to God.

First Reading Exodus 34:29-35

Psalm 99 Dominus regnavit Chant: J. Barnby

The Lord is King; let the peoples tremble; he sitteth upon the cherubim; let the earth be moved.

The Lord is great in Sion, and high above all the peoples.

Let them give thanks unto thy Name, which is great and wonderful; for he is holy.

The King’s power loveth judgement; thou dost establish equity: thou dost execute judgement and righteousness in Jacob.

O magnify the Lord our God, and fall down before his footstool; for he is holy.

Moses and Aaron among his priests, and Samuel among such as call upon his Name: these called upon the Lord, and he heard them.

He spake unto them out of the cloudy pillar; for they kept his testimonies, and the law that he gave them.

Thou heardest them, O Lord our God; thou forgavest them, O God, though thou didst punish their doings.

O magnify the Lord our God, and worship at his holy hill; for the Lord our God is holy.

Presider Dear friends in Christ, God is steadfast in love and infinite in mercy; welcoming sinnersand inviting them to this table. Let us confess our sins, confident in God's forgiveness.

Silence is keptPresider Most merciful God,All We confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, by what

we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you withour whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. We are trulysorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercyon us and forgive us, that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways,to the glory of your name. Amen.

Presider Almighty God, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in eternal life; throughJesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Peace You are invited to greet those around you in the name of Christ.

Nicene Creed Presider Let us confess our faith, as we say,All We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of

heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of theHoly Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of theFather. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father. With the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Prayers of the PeopleIn the Anglican Cycle of Prayer we pray for theChurch of Madurai-Ramnad (South India); in

the Diocesan Cycle of Prayer we pray for our BishopMichael Ingham, our partner diocese of Taiwan and

Bishop David Lai, and St. Stephen’s Centre, Keelung,The Ministry and Congregational DevelopmentCommittee, The Communications Committee; inour Parish we pray for Sorrento Centre.

Prayer over the GiftsPresider Holy God,All receive all we offer you this day,

and bring us to that radiant glorywhich we see in the transfigured faceof Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Great Thanksgiving Presider The Lord be with you.All And also with you.Presider Lift up your hearts. All We lift them to the Lord.Presider Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.All It is right to give our thanks and praise.Presider We praise you and we bless you, holy and gracious God,

source of life abundant. From before time, you made ready the creation. Your Spirit moved over the deep and brought all things into being: sun, moon, and stars; earth, winds, and waters; and every living thing. You made us in your image, male and female, and taught us to walk in yourways. But we rebelled against you and wandered far away; and yet, as a mother cares for her children, you would not forget us. Time and again you call us to live in the fullness of your love. And so this day we join with saints and angels in the chorus of praise that rings through eternity, lifting our voices to magnify you as we sing:

Sanctus Choir John Ireland

Presider Glory and honour and praise to you, holy and living God. To deliver us fromthe power of sin and death and to reveal the riches of your grace, you lookedwith favour upon Mary, your willing servant, that she might conceive and beara son, Jesus the holy child of God. Living among us, Jesus loved us. He brokebread with outcasts and sinners, healed the sick, and proclaimed good news tothe poor. He yearned to draw all the world to himself yet we were heedless ofhis call to walk in love. Then, the time came for him to complete upon thecross the sacrifice of his life, and to be glorified by you.On the night before he died for us, Jesus was at table with his friends. He tookbread, gave thanks to you, broke it, and gave it to them, and said: “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” As supper was ending, Jesus took the cup of wine. Again, he gave thanks toyou, gave it to them, and said: “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of thenew Covenant, which is poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness ofsins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”Now gathered at your table, O God of all creation, and remembering Christ, crucified and risen, who was and is and is to come, we offer

CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL 9

to you our gifts of bread and wine, and ourselves, a living sacrifice.Pour out your Spirit upon these gifts that they may be the Body and Blood ofChrist. Breathe your Spirit over the whole earth and make us your new cre-ation, the Body of Christ given for the world you have made.In the fullness of time bring us, with all your saints, from every tribe and languageand people and nation, to feast at the banquet prepared from the foundation ofthe world.Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,to you be honour, glory and praise, for ever and ever.

All Amen.

Lord’s Prayer

Breaking of the BreadPresider We break the bread of life,

and that life is the light of the world. All God here among us, light in the midst of us,

bring us to light and life.Presider The gifts of God for the people of God.All Thanks be to God.

Choir Agnus Dei John Ireland

Sending Out of the DisciplesPrayer After CommunionPresider Holy God,All we see your glory in the face of Jesus Christ.

May we who are partakers of his tablereflect his life in word and deed, that all the world may knowhis power to change and save.We ask this in his name. Amen.

DoxologyPresider Glory to God,All whose power, working in us,

can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine.Glory to God from generation to generation,in the Church and in Christ Jesus, for ever and ever. Amen.

Prayer and Laying-on of Hands for HealingWe invite those wishing particular prayer for themselves or on behalf of someone else, or to share in

a prayer of thanksgiving for blessings received, to come to the front of the line to receive the bread andwine. Immediately after receiving, go to the prayer station. Give your first name and in a low voice brieflystate your prayer need. The prayer team will lay hands gently on your shoulders and after a short silence, they will pray quietly for you. While the communion is being administered, we respectfully ask that you keep the silence — this is a timefor quiet prayer and meditation.

Share the GiftsIf you know the brokenness of life, its fractures within and its division without, then you have par-ticipated in the broken body of Christ and you are invited to share in the breaking of bread. If youdesire to know the love of God that overcomes indifference and despair, if you desire the reconcil-

iation that overcomes estrangement and alien ation then you are invited to share the cup of the new covenant. The bread is received in the open palm. It is usual Anglican practice to drink the wine from the commoncup. If you wish to dip bread in the wine, extend one hand for a wafer. Both wine and unfermented grapejuice are served, grape juice is administered from the pottery chalice. Gluten-free wafers are available uponrequest in the East alcove.

This will be fol-lowed by a visit to the Classical Chinese Garden. The Garden provides us with a chance to quietourselves and enjoy the beauty of creation togeth-er. It also symbolically points us towards the sea-son of Lent and the time Christ himself spent inthe Garden of Gethsemane. The cost is 5 dollarswhich includes lunch, transportation and admis-sion. Please RSVP with Jessica.

18 The Last Sunday after Epiphany | February 10, 2013

In the tender compassion of our Godthe dawn from on high shall break upon us

to shine on those who dwell in darkness and theshadow of death

and to guide our feet into the way of peace(from the Benedictus -Song of Zechariah)

At Morning Prayer today we said the canticle knownas the Benedictus—the song of John the Baptist’sfather Zechariah, found in Luke’s gospel (Luke 1: 78-80). The words that conclude this beautiful canticleanticipate the liturgies of this coming week: onSunday the season of Epiphany–the season oflight–concludes with the gospel reading of theTransfiguration of Jesus; and it’s Ash Wednesday, thisweek, beginning the season of Lent. Light, darkness, the shadow of death, and the way of peace: these fourthemes draw us closer, in these mid-winter days, tothe love of God.

Light: in one of the most mystical moments of theNew Testament on the mountaintop Jesus is trans-figured in light. The light of God transfigures ortransforms us: Archbishop Desmond Tutu oncesaid that the goal of the Christian life is to see eachhuman being as transfigured by the love of God. Itis a transfigured or transformed world that we seekas followers of Jesus: I always find it moving at bap-tisms when, as the newly baptized are given a light-ed candle, the congregation says “Let your light soshine before others that all may see your goodworks and glorify God.” It is the joy and responsi-bility of all God’s children to shine as God’s lightsin the world and to see the whole world as anexpression of the creative love of God.

Darkness: on Ash Wednesday the church begins thejourney into the darkness of the world’s sin and griefas we acknowledge our brokenness and prepare tohear again the story of the death and resurrection of

Dean’s Notes FEBRUARY 10, 2013

Jesus. The liturgy of Ash Wednesday launches theseason of Lent: a period of time where the baptizedare invited into a time of self- examination, peni-tence, prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Liturgies at theCathedral on Ash Wednesday are observed at 7:30a.m., 12:10 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. At 6:15 p.m. a sim-ple supper is available in the Parish Hall.

Shadow of Death: in a recent Bible Study one par-ticipant, reflecting on Jesus’ words in John’s gospel,“Greater love has no one than this—to lay downone’s life for one’s friends” commented that everyday we lay a little more of our lives down, until oneday we have no more life to lay down. As we laydown our lives daily, Jesus commands us to do itfor our friends. We all live under the shadow ofdeath: how we spend our days is a matter of ourchoosing.

Way of Peace: increasingly I am persuaded that theessence of the gospel of Jesus Christ is to model ourlives on his—the one who, after his crucifixion, returned to his friends without a word of revenge. What the resurrection of Jesus—what Lent pre-pares us to receive—proclaims is that there is a wayto live in the world that brings peace, ending thecycle of violence and retribution. When John’sgospel describes Jesus Christ as the ‘way’, I inter-pret this to mean the way of peace. We can modelour lives on his and through God’s grace be instru-ments of peace in the world.

Light, darkness, shadow of death, way of peace: asthe church concludes this season of Epiphany andbegins the journey of Lent may you find yourselfcaught up in the good news of Jesus Christ and bepart of a community called to be Christ’s body inthe world.
