Mark your calendars, ladies and gentle- men. On March 16 th of 2006, Lee University will  be invaded. The invasion is nothing less than the “Equality Ride,” a seven-week bus crusade of young adults dedicated to confronting colleges that ban the enrollment of students who are gay, lesbian, bi- sexual, or transgender. The organizers of this event have cho- sen nine- t e e n colleges and uni- versities across the United States t h a t “force students into clos- ets of fear and self- hate.” They plan to hold discussions and dialogues that will allow them to make themselves heard... whether Lee wants to listen or not. “I'm excited about the ability to have fac e to face contact to challenge the assumptions of these flawed policies and the students who suffe r under them,” reads the profile of Monica Carmean, a 20- year-old woman from Fresno, California who will ride with t he Equalit y Ride in the s pring. “The Equality Ride is the ultimate grassroots expression of the unconditional and accepting lov e of God. This is an amazing opportunity to share His love in places that have been so full of hate and oppres- sion.” The profiles of the other “Riders” offer similar views. Ironically, the members of the Equality Ride dis- agree with a part of Lee life that many current students dislike: the Community Covenant. How- ever, the passage that they find unbearable (“ho- mosexual  behavior”), is not the same one that stu- dents most often com-  plain about. Spe ci fi- cally, the Equality Ride web- site cites a  pa ssa ge from the Lee Student Handbook: “The university encourages wholesome interaction  betwee n the sexes but stands firmly against those elements of the society which condone pre-marital and extra-marital sexual relations, homosexual  practices and other forms of sexual behavior which violate Scripture. Engaging in sexual acts expressly condemned in Scripture (premarital sex, adultery and homosexual practices) will result in suspension or expulsion.” Headlines T h e Lee February 10, 2006! Page 4 I N S I D E “Christian gays” to storm Lee “What do you mean ‘not everyone at Lee is a Christian’?” What kind of statement is that!!? We’re all in Christian courses and we attend chapel three times a week. Well... two. Maybe. So who on earth has the nerve to say that not everyone on campus is a Christian? Well, despite the fact that Lee University is a Christian institution, it is impossible to ignore the truth that a percentage of the student population does not “have Jesus in their heart and at the cen- ter of their life.” When surround ed 24/7 on a campus with such a strong sense of Christian environment and culture, it becomes easy and comfortable to believe that everyone is the same. Obviously, that’s not the case.. We wanted to know what life was like for them here at Lee and what they thought of religion and faith. A handful of non-Christian st udents agreed to be part of an interview for “The Lee Head- lines,” and here they are: •Jhapendra Sapkota, 21, comes from a remote village of Nepal approximately 330 kilometers from the capital city of Katmandu. •Punit V aidya, also from Nepal , is 20 years old. •Bibidh Bixram G.C., 19, comes to Lee directly from the capital of Nepal. •Sangam Lama, also of Nepal. Each considers himself a Hindu, although not all of them practice the faith ferve ntly. W e asked each of them the same questions, the answers of which may be edited for clarity.
