Lilydale Uniting Church Clean Up Australia Clean Up Australia Day is 20 years old this year.

Some of the members of the Uniting Church thought it would be a good project to involve all of us who are disgusted at the amount of roadside rubbish in the Lilydale area.

We have registered with Clean Up Australia for the afternoon of Sunday 7 March and plan to clean the roadsides between the Lilydale township and the Lilydale Falls Park. It would be great if we could have a good turnout of both individuals, and local groups.

Come for an hour, come for the afternoon, let’s see what a difference we can make.

For further details, and to register your interest and support, please see page 16 in this issue.

Sgt Neil gave a talk on the purpose of Neighbourhood Watch, which is Crime Prevention and educating people about not becoming victims of crime.

Police Report On the 28/11/09 offenders have trespassed onto the grounds of Lilydale Primary and have set off the fire alarm by discharging a fire extinguisher. Offenders have also damaged a number of lights and removed some sporting equipment from an unlocked shed. Equipment has been returned to the school the next day. Offenders Charged. If anybody sees any suspicious activity in or around the school please report it. The Lilydale Police number is 63952050 if no one is there you will be transferred to Launceston.

Police are targeting the use of unregistered trail bikes on public reserves and roads. Any information leading to the identification of riders is being sought by police, and should be forwarded to Crime Stoppers, or by phoning 131 444.

Anybody who can assist the Police with enquiries on any of the above incidents are urged to contact Lilydale Police on 63952050 or CRIME STOPPERS on 1800 333 000 Remember THINGS YOUR BURGLAR WON’T TELL YOU (A helpful and useful bit of information by Yvonne Hawkins) 1. Of course I look familiar. I was here cleaning your carpets, painting your shutters, or delivering your new refrigerator. 2. Hey, thanks for letting me use the bathroom when I was working in your yard last week. While I was in there, I unlatched the back window to make my return a little easier. 3. Love those flowers. That tells me you have taste, and taste means there are nice things inside. Those toys your kids leave out always make me wonder what type of gaming system they have. 4. Yes, I really do look for newspapers piled up in the driveway. I might leave a pizza flyer in your front door to see how long it takes you to remove it. 5. If decorative glass is part of your front entrance, don’t let your alarm company install the control pad where I can see if it’s set. That makes it too easy. 6. A good security company alarms the window over the sink, and the windows on the second floor which often access the master bedroom-and your jewellery. It’s not a bad idea to put motion detectors up there too.

7. It’s raining, you’re fumbling with your umbrella, and you forgot to lock your door-understandable, But understand this: I don’t take a day off because of bad weather. 8. I always knock first. If you answer, I’ll ask for directions somewhere or offer to clean your gutters. 9. Do you really think I won’t look in your sock drawer? I always check dresser drawers, the bedside table, and the medicine cabinet. 10. Here’s a helpful hint: I almost never go into kids rooms. 11. You’re right: I won’t have enough time to break into that safe where you keep your valuables. But if it’s not bolted down, I’ll take it with me. A loud TV or radio can be a better deterrent than the best alarm system.

Lilydale Bowls Club This season has been a tough one for all of Lilydale’s teams. Despite this the attitude within the club remains strong and in particular the Men’s teams have been firing on all cylinders. Men’s Div. 2 res. Team has done well since it has stepped up a division and is firmly placed in the middle of the field, with an outside chance of making the finals. Men’s Div.5 team has played amazingly well for their first year of competition and are in a similar position to our top side. However, we are in need of more players as the women who have been augmenting the team are not permitted to play, should they make the finals, so it will be “all hands on deck”!

The Women’s team has had similar problems with player numbers and due to several tragic circumstances, have often needed to play short, or with substitute players. In short. WE NEED MORE BOWLERS!

Currently our green is closed to all but club games, and we thank North Launceston and West Launceston for welcoming us to their greens.

The club has recently completed a Development Plan with assistance from the Department of Sport and Recreation and is acting on the findings from that report. A meeting will be called of all members and those interested in becoming players or social members ,so stay tuned.

Our next social function will be a FILM NIGHT at the SENIOR CITIZENS ROOMS on SATURDAY 27th March for members, social members and invited guests.

Lions Input The Lions are back in full swing for 2010. In January the club hosted the Kings Meadows and Launceston Lions to a BBQ at the

Falls. About 70 lions in all turned out and a good time was had by all. The club is still homeless and looking for a new venue to meet since the Mary Walsh Centre closed. As part of our search we went to the Leaning Church Vineyard for a night out and decided that it would be a grand venue for our March Dinner meeting. The February supper Meeting was held as part of a Trivia Night at the Door of Hope. “The Pride” team came a creditable equal second. This was all the more creditable given the last two sections were “Celebrities” and “Music” both of which were centred round the last 5 years.

In March we really start ramping up the activities. The Lions will be providing a free sausage sizzle for the Uniting Church’s “Clean Up Australia Day”. We urge all Lilydale residents to get out and assist this worthy activity. The March supper meeting will be at the St Giles Society, an organisation that assists disabled members of the community, and one which the Lilydale Lions Club has been granted Life Membership.

You may also have seen that the Lions have recognised certain businesses in Lilydale for the support they have provided over a long period. Thanks to Lilydale Liberty, Bardenagen’s Supermarket and Gorgeous Gifts for their continuing support of the Lions activities.

In more good news for the club, the Tasmanian Government has provided funds for the club to purchase a purpose built marquee. This will allow the club to provide support to the community in all weathers. We would like to acknowledge the Tasmanian Government’s continuing support of the Lilydale Lions Club and service clubs in general.

Remember that if you have a desire to help the community, socialise with like minded personnel, or are just curious about Lions and what they do, you are more than welcome to come along to a meeting – there is no obligation to join. Just call Barry on 6395 4233, or talk to any Lions member.

CWA Notes Guest Hanna was welcomed to the first meeting for 2010, along with seven members. Ideas were discussed for the coming year and an agenda for the early months drawn up, for activities after the morning meeting. We meet 9.45 a.m at either the Uniting Church or the Old Court Room – new members are most welcome.

March 3rd meeting will be followed by shared lunch at noon, when anyone interested in joining us over lunch to join in an informal discussion on pre-arranged funerals with Gaye from Gaye’s Funeral Services is invited to attend. This could save a lot of anguish at a distressing time for families. This does not tie anyone to a particular company – just a chance to help the family make decisions.

In April, we celebrate our 71st birthday and plan on visiting the Planetarium in Launceston.

May is AGM month plus general meeting and Jennifer has offered to show how to make origami boxes – they are really classy.

We have been assured they are quick and easy to make. Ha-Ha Jennifer, you haven’t seen my previous origami efforts!!

Another query we would like to receive feedback about. Do we have our END-OF-FINANCIAL-YEAR-MARKET on June 26th? Who would be interested in having a stall? Phone Margaret on 63 95 1267 or Dorothy 63 95 6142. Adult Education is holding a Community Knit day on 23rd May, if you can’t attend, they will happily accept squares knitted in garter stitch*, 8 ply yarn, 4 mm needles, 50 sts – or stitches form a 25 cm or 10 inch square.

Lilydale members will take part in a public knitting day on 16th June to promote knitting as a craft. As yet the venue in Lilydale is not decided. Again money prizes will be awarded in Junior Craft and Junior Cookery sections at the Launceston Show in October.

Congratulations to the Uniting Church on their initiative in arranging the Clean-up Lilydale campaign. 1-5 p.m on the 7th March. Please come along and help, even if you only have half an hour to spare. We all know there should be no need to have these events, but one glance at the roadsides shows how vital they are. Take care folks.

Senior Citizens News This month has come round so quickly I have not got much to report.

We have organised to replace the fascia board round the building as it has deteriorated on the back. This should be completed within two weeks.

Our lawns don’t need cutting so often as it’s still quiet dry.

We have entered two teams in the State Bowls Championships held in the Community Hall at Deloraine. We would like to see more people turn up Tuesday and Friday, you don’t have to play bowls, have a talk and cuppa with us.

Next meeting will be 9th March at 1.30pm. All welcome.

Concerns over Future Water Quality and Quantity were again voiced in Lilydale at a community meeting on February 16th. The 82 people that attended, including two aldermen, passed 4 motions that expressed their anger over proposed logging, re-planting and potential aerial pesticide spraying, all within the catchment area of Lilydale’s main water intake.

Presented at the meeting were the findings of the Concerned Residents of Mt Arthur, who scrutinised the Forest Practices Plan with the help of hydrologist Ass. Professor Brian Finlayson. Together they found several major flaws with the Plan, which were initially denied but just today admitted to by the Forest Practises Authority.

The feeling of the group and of the meeting indicated a systemic failure of the Forest Practice system, supported by a vote of no confidence in the regulator, FPA, to protect and manage the water catchment. Kathryn Scott The Lilydale Village Market Re-opens

Lilydale Water Supply Ed: I recently had the opportunity to ask some questions of Mr Barry Cash, Chief Executive Officer of Ben Lomond Water, here are his replies.

What information has Ben Lomond gathered in relation to the planned logging of a portion of the Rocky Creek catchment? A senior BLW officer met with officials from Launceston City Council, the Forest Practices Authority and representatives from the land owner on site. Our officer was advised that approximately 15% of the Rocky Creek catchment was to be logged over 3 years – that is 5% per year. Recent press reports indicate that the FPA is confident this quantity is correct. We are led to believe that logging of such small areas will have little or no impact on the water resource. In any case Rocky Creek contributes substantially less to the water supply than does McGowan’s Creek as noted below.

This meeting also confirmed that logging operations would provide buffers along streams in excess of the requirements of the Forest Practices Act and that this was being provided to ensure minimal impact on water quality. Of course the water quality is already seriously degraded as noted below.

What percentage of the Lilydale water supply comes from the Rocky Creek catchment? Lilydale’s water supply currently is drawn from both Rocky Creek and McGowan’s Creek. Water drawn from both sources is metered and the records over recent years shows that for most of the year Rocky Creek contributes approximately 10% to the supply. During the higher demand period of summer this proportion rises to around 25%. The reasoning for this is that the McGowan’s Creek tank is slightly higher than the Rocky Creek tank and provides greater pressure into the pipe network and hence dominates the

Page 8: THE LILYDALE PROGRESSIVElilydaletas.net/progressive/pdf/progmar10.pdf · Helpful Hints & Tips 18 . The Lilydale Progressive - March 2010 Page 2 Neighbourhood Watch ... you can call

The Lilydale Progressive - March 2010 Page 8

supply. In summer the increased demand (flow rates) increase the pressure loss through the pipes and this domination is reduced and hence Rocky Creek makes a greater contribution. I am advised by my staff that despite McGowan’s Creek having a smaller catchment, it’s base (summer) flow is much greater than Rocky Creek.

In relation to water quality and quantity (during summer) what if any are Ben Lomond Water’s plans for Lilydale? Lilydale has long been subjected to regular summer restrictions, although this has not been necessary this year. My officers, many of whom were previously employed by the Council, have indicated that this is caused by inadequacies in the pipe system and not lack of water resource, particularly in McGowan’s Creek. As I mentioned above, higher flows in summer increases the pressure loss through the pipes causing houses at higher elevations to receive an intermittent supply. Restrictions reduce demand and hence flows in the pipes and hence pressure losses and the higher houses then receive a better service.

Lilydale has long been subjected to permanent boil water alerts. This is because the microbiological quality is very poor. It is important for residents to understand that this water must not be consumed without boiling. The microbiological quality is such that the Director of Public Health recently included

Lilydale in the public health priority project list issued to Ben Lomond Water. This means the Director considers the provision of treated water to Lilydale to be a high priority.

Last year the Launceston City Council prepared a report recommending that Ben Lomond further consider constructing a pipeline from the North Esk trunk main to Lilydale as the most appropriate means of providing treated water. My staff are currently reviewing this report and developing a plan to comply with the requirements of the Director of Public Health. While we have not yet come to a conclusion, it is quite likely, given the extensive work previously undertaken by the Council that the pipeline proposal is the most appropriate solution. Of course it will be necessary for us to consult with our customers before proceeding with this project. An additional advantage of the pipeline proposal is that it provides the opportunity to provide reticulated treated water to Karoola and possibly Lalla.

I’m fine, Thank you There is nothing the matter with me, I’m as fine as I can be. I have arthritis in both my knees And when I talk, I really wheeze. My pulse is weak, and my blood is thin, But I’m awfully well – for the shape I’m in!

Arch supports, I have for my feet, Or I wouldn’t be able to be on the street. Sleep is denied me, night after night, But every morning I find I’m all right. My memory is failing; my head’s in a spin, But I’m awfully well – for the shape I’m in!

The moral of this tale I unfold That for you and me who are growing old, It’s better to say ‘I’m FINE!’ with a grin Than to let people know the shape we’re in!

Happy New Year everyone!!! With the busy 2009 Christmas season we had massive parcel consignments delivered to the Lilydale Post Office. In fact, parcels in general have increased dramatically throughout the year. Australia Post regulations for any post office state that we can only hold parcels for 10 working days and then they have to be returned to sender. Australia post policy also states that a parcel collection card must be presented with id before you can collect any parcels. Please ensure that your parcels are collected within that time frame and you bring your parcel card and id with you when collecting your parcels. However, if you cannot collect your parcel within 10 days for any reason, please call the Lilydale Post Office on 63951177 and our helpful staff will be only too happy to assist you in arranging an alternative collection or delivery point.

Hope you had a safe and happy Christmas and New Year period. Looking forward to seeing you in 2010 at the Lilydale Post Office.

The Poles Can you believe that the Poles were painted just over 10 years ago? Can you remember how the Community came together and supported the project. Can you remember, the buzz when the undercoating started, when the meetings happened to choose designs, when you went to the Aurora safety classes (and so many wanted to work on the painting that we had to have two classes). Then, after months and months of behind the scenes work, the artists started painting their poles. And what a job they did.

Other communities in Tasmania have tried to emulate this project, none have touched the professionalism, artistry and down right cleverness of our three artists. The Lilydale Poles has continued over these 10 + years to showcase what was a tremendously successful Community project.

A project that bought the Lilydale community together with a sense of achievement and pride.

Nothing lasts forever however.

The poles are getting a bit sad, refurbishment over the years has helped them to maintain some of their original grandeur, but the time has come the walrus said to say that they need to be redone.

Lets’ not beat around the bush, to do so will take funds. Funds that the local branch of Tasmanian Regional Arts do not have available.

It is thought that it will take twelve months to get organised to redo the paintings. In this time we need to raise monies, organise hopefully to get paint donated or at least cost less (this is a major part of the financial cost) repair poles etc etc.

When you look at photos of the Main Street, past and present, it is amazing how the pole paintings transformed these otherwise dull, uninteresting and in places, ugly structures.

To this day, on any day that you go down, there is usually someone taking photos and walking around the poles.

The poles need to be redone, but we will need your help to get the job done. Keep an eye out in future Progressives and if you have any ideas please contact a member of the local branch of TRA. Carol Charlton

Eating for a long and healthy life It is sometimes stated that we are what we eat. Children have a genetic predisposition to prefer certain tastes; however, the main influence on a young child’s eating behaviours and food choices are their parents and care-givers. We adults must set the example as we can help children to establish healthy eating habits that are carried into adulthood.

However, older children and adolescents are subject to many other influences on their eating habits. These include peer pressure and, not surprisingly, television. Several studies have shown rates of overweight and obesity in children are related to hours of TV viewing. A recent study has shown increased death rates from all causes in adults who watch more than four hours of TV daily. Obese children have a significantly higher risk of becoming obese adults, with all the associated health risks.

Up to the age of 12 months, breast milk, infant formulas and water are the only fluids recommended. From 12 months onwards, cows’ milk is an important source of calcium, protein and some B group vitamins for children and adolescents. The trend towards greater consumption of soft drinks, instead of milk, is worrying. Soft drinks, vitamin drinks and energy drinks have all become fashionable. These drinks contain large amounts of sugar, and often caffeine. Guarana (which is in many energy drinks) contains caffeine. Sugar and caffeine are not nutritionally advantageous and should be discouraged.

Cola drinks seem to present particular problems.

In the United States, the consumption of cola beverages has been associated with bone fractures in physically active high school girls, possibly due to the high phosphoric acid content in cola drinks. In addition, caffeine increases the rate of elimination of calcium from the body.

The Centre for Adolescent Health at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, is conducting a trial of gastric banding surgery in 50 obese children aged 14-18 years.

A child on a vegetarian diet is at risk of a number of nutrient deficiencies. So, such a diet for a child must be carefully planned; while a strict vegan diet is not recommended at all.

There are a number of specific foods which are considered unsuitable for children under the age of five. Nuts, lollies, popcorn and pieces of raw vegetables and raw apple, which could become stuck in the throat and prevent breathing.

Of course poor food choices can occur as we get older as well. Malnutrition among older people is quite common; and it’s a condition that often goes unnoticed.

Elderly men seem to be more at risk than elderly women (men living alone are less likely to eat regular well-balanced meals), but some risk factors affect both men and women. Gastro-intestinal symptoms such as heartburn, indigestion, constipation, vomiting and diarrhoea contribute towards poor eating. Perhaps less obvious are conditions such as arthritis (causes difficulty preparing meals), difficulty in swallowing, poor fitting dentures, dry mouth, oral infections and medication side effects.

The pharmacy stocks the product ‘Proform’ which is a food supplement containing protein, energy and vita-mins. It can be mixed with regular foods and drinks to increase nutrition levels.

PANVAX Swine Flu (H1N1) Vaccination Lilydale Medical Centre has been holding vaccination clinics on Friday mornings however we realise that this is not convenient for everyone.

We are planning to have an all day Saturday vaccination clinic on March 27th. This is likely to be our only Saturday clinic. Panvax is supplied free of charge to everyone by the Federal Government and its administration is covered by Medicare.

Fluvax this year will include swine flu along with two other influenza strains. This is available free to all people over 65, to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders over 15 and to those over 6 months of age at particular risk of influenza complications (those with chronic diseases and pregnant women).

This will be available late March/April.

If you have Panvax first it is alright to have Fluvax later (given a month or more later it will boost immunity).

The Health Department has advised that there will not be sufficient Fluvax to vaccinate the whole population however there is plenty of Panvax available for those who do not qualify for free Fluvax. It is particularly advisable for young people to be vaccinated against Swine Flu with Panvax.

To help us organise the day it would be helpful if you could phone the surgery to let us know when you are coming, and how many. We will not be making bookings however we will divide the day into hourly blocks and if you select a block of time we will list your preference and ensure that you are vaccinated as soon as possible within that time block. People who ‘drop in’ may have to wait longer at busy times.

Swine Flu vaccinations at Lilydale Medical Centre - Saturday 27th March (9.00 – 10.00) (10.00 – 11.00) (11.00 – 12.00) (12.00 – 12.45) Lunch break (2.00 – 3.00) (3.00 – 4.00) (4.00 – 5.00)

Helpful Bathroom Hints & Tips

To remove mildew from a shower curtain

1. rub baking soda on the curtain before washing in normal way.

2. Rub lemon juice over the mildew stains, add non-iodised salt and let it dry in the sun; then wash.

3. Soak the curtain in a solution of chlorine-based bleach, then scrub off mildew with a brush. Rinse well.

4. Bicarbonate of soda can be used to remove mildew from small areas.

Clean glass shower doors and screens with a sponge dipped in white vinegar.

Clean scum from plastic shower curtains with 1/2 a cup of household bleach diluted in 5 litres of water.

Drain Freshener - To freshen drain, pour 1/4 to 1/2 box of baking soda down the drain, add 1/2 cup of white vinegar. Cover drain tightly for a few minutes and flush with cold water

Easy cleaning - it's easiest to clean the bathroom after a steamy bath or shower as the steam will have loosened the dirt.
