Winnaleah-Derby, Bridport and East Launceston Branches. Anzac Day was remembered with flowers.

Our 69th birthday was celebrated at Jennifer’s with a shared lunch in April. Christmas was lunch at Tranquillity Gardens Legana, an especially happy occasion. The November meeting was combined with pasta making demonstration by Trish at her home – results enjoyed by all for lunch! Goodbye commercial pasta. In July, several members attended an afternoon gathering at the home of the Leader family at Karoola, where a rose and an inscribed plaque was given to Rosemary in memory of her Mother, Jean Wilson, a former long-time member of Lilydale CWA.

Practical help has been given at Agfest, coat hanger assembly day, and each day at State Exhibition with cooking, stewarding, packing, unpacking, kitchen help and entries. Group get-together at East Launceston and George Town has been attended as have the two State conferences, the Forum at Bridport and monthly Handcraft and Home Industry meetings. The Lilydale Lions Club survey was completed with suggestions for improvements needed in the district – would be nice to see our ideas implemented.

Publicity comes from notes each month in the local publication “The Lilydale Progressive” with several members taking turns to report. An extra was an article and brief history in the Tamar Times and the regional news in the Examiner – which resulted in an interview with two nervous members on the ABC radio afternoon show.

Birthdays and the “not-so-well’ are remembered. Special honours for Eileen and Norma when they received their 40 years plus membership certificates.

We have cared and shared the happy and the sad moments along the way through a busy year. Thank you to all the members who have co-operated willingly and cheerfully throughout the year. Now we look forward to our 71st year, a good milestone (or should it be kilometrestone?) to achieve.

Thank You.

CWA News 70th Annual Report. Lilydale Country Womens Association. Presented at the AGM. 6th May, 2009

An Annual Report gives us a chance to look back on a year’s work – it is with pleasure, on behalf of the Lilydale Country Women’s Association I present the 70th Annual Report.

Membership is 11, this includes one junior member - meetings are held the first Wednesday morning of the month, mostly in the Old Court Room where the original branch members met 70 years ago. Meeting attendances average 8.

Roll calls have been varied - sale of raffle tickets, birthday basket gift, collection of goodies for the Operation Christmas Child boxes, articles for Town and Country shop member, grocery items for a raffle, knitted squares for “Adult Education” rugs, stall articles for the State Exhibition, plus something special for our birthday luncheon. Coins are collected for freight on the Christmas boxes with the balance coming from branch funds.

Income has come from catering - Devonshire teas and sandwiches at the Arts Council display, Visually Impaired clients’ lunch and at the end of June, a new venture, a community market – a most successful day, all the sorting, marking, sign writing, preparations well worth it. It was wonderful to see the Memorial Hall fully utilised, a real hive of activity. Profits were divided between Cancer Research and state CWA project, motor neuron disease research.

Donations were made to Winter Relief and Empty Stocking appeals. ACWW coins, State administration, Spur Wing, the annual school Encouragement Awards, Launceston Show prize money in the junior sections and a local family whose home was completely destroyed by fire.

Pacific area school and sewing needs have been collected, 171 items given for the baby box and biscuits cooked for Agfest.

Mary Walsh Centre During the month, we enjoyed sharing photographs of ourselves as youngsters and what a dashing young man was Bob the bus driver with his shiny head of hair!

Helen from Best and Less brought a selection of clothing along so that the group members could try them on in the comfort of the Day Centre; thanks to Helen for providing this opportunity. We had a welcome visit from Vanessa, our former volunteer, who brought some magazines for the ladies to enjoy. Bob took us on a wonderful drive to admire the autumn leaves and we made some beautiful laminated bookmarks with pressed leaves.

Dining with Friends grows in popularity with ten people attending this month. Two of our regular members have moved to full-time care and another is receiving respite care which means our numbers are again seriously low. If you have ever considered joining our group or could refer someone who would benefit from our services, please be encouraged to come forth and join or make your recommendation.

Upcoming events: June 4th - we will be making tea light lanterns; Jenny Scott has offered to use any made to decorate the trees on the Lilydale Lantern Walk. Mary Walsh Centre is proud to be involved in such positive community activities. We will also have music and singing with Heather Griffith.

June 11 - Valda Gee will talk to us about the Guardian Angel Knitting Project. Valda is a former resident of Lilydale and co-author of the prize-winning book, The Sausage Tree. June 18 -Fruit Cocktail party where we will be wearing our cocktail hats and creating and enjoying some non-alcoholic fruit cocktails. June 25 - Games, games, games! Who will challenge our Ludo champion, Don Smith?

If you would like to join any of the activities please contact the Centre on 63 951 316; we would love to hear from YOU.

If anyone has ideas for an activity, please contact Darian or Trish at the Centre.

Lilydale Football Club News A week’s a long time in football and a month is even longer. A lot has happened since the last Progressive edition. Injuries have befallen a few

players and some have been away with other commitments but some dedicated local boys have put in a 110% effort and been elevated to the seniors for the first time in a few years. Each week either new or old players are turning up for a game. The atmosphere at the club is positive and the 2009 season is shaping up to be a real hum dinger.

Branxholm provided great entertainment in round 4 after a minutes silence at 11am dedicated to our ANZACS and even though Lilydale fought hard for 4 quarters, the Wanderers came out the victors at the final siren by 4 points. We didn’t play our best football even with new coach Clinton Parker making his first appearance for the season but I’m sure we’ll learn from the experience and improve on the result next time we meet. Tye Woods tried hard all day and Thane Bardenhagen, Brendan Hawes and Robert Flynn played at their usual reliable level. The under 16’s and the reserves continued on their winning way and are really looking the goods.

The following week was a total flogging in all 3 games. The Scottsdale Crows are certainly lacking in key areas and it’s hard to remember they were the NEFU premiers in 2006. Hopefully they’ll improve as the season progresses. The Demons had 16 goal scorers in the seniors match including new recruit Jamie Rayner booting 11 goals to win by 176 points. The Lilydale Reserves beat Scottsdale by 177 points and the Under 16’s won by 92 points. The real winner of the day was we now have willing and reliable score board attendants new to the area who are keen to be part of the club having never seen a game of Aussie Rules before. They did a terrific job considering the amount of goals kicked that day kept them extremely busy. We also have a permanent seniors water boy and this makes the committee’s life so much easier as each home game can be quite stressful to get enough helpers to fill all the jobs on the day. Onya kids. The seniors continue to turn up to boundary umpire for the Under 16’s and it’s truly appreciated.

The road trip to Winnaleah proved a successful one. The first half of the seniors match was physical and the Magpies were in front at half time by 3 goals. But Lilydale came out firing in the 3rd quarter and ran all over them. Tom Grimes made his presence felt in the back line and Jamie Rayner took a screamer. Ted Hawes dominated and from there the Demons played some really good footy. The Reserves continued their domination of the competition with Matt Zanetto, Matt Zurbo and Brady Butwell firing. The Under 16’s were unrelenting and Brent Hammersley, Jed Ryan and Brendon Street had heaps of the ball.

After Round 6 Lilydale Demons are on top of all 3 ladders. It’s a close race in the seniors between Lilydale, Ringarooma, Winnaleah and Branxholm and Bridport are in with a chance. Looking forward to our second encounters.

Lions Club of Lilydale The Lions Club's Mothers Day Raffle was drawn for Mothers Day, strangely enough.

The winners were: 1st Prize – Bardenhagen's Supermarket voucher – Hamish Youd 2nd Prize – Gorgeous Gifts Voucher - Jennifer Scott 3rd Prize – Garden Ornament – Margaret Pryce 4th Prize – Fishing Rod - Arthur Nash 5th Prize – Knives – Sue Griffin

Our thanks to Bardenhagen's, Gorgeous Gifts and Liberty Lilydale for their support. We also thank all those people of the district who bought tickets; your support is valued and allows us to support the less fortunate and needy of the district. It has also assisted us to donate funds to Lions Eye Health and Drug Awareness programs, and to local charities supporting people in this time of economic turmoil.

Community Audit The Lions Club has been busy discussing the community audit inputs and will be providing feedback to those people and groups that provided it, as soon as we have developed our plan. This may take a little time, so we would ask for some patience.

Other News Lions Members took part in ANZAC Day ceremonies in Lilydale, including laying a wreath at the 11am ceremony.

Our Moo Poo is still available for your gardening needs. Give the spring bulbs a great start, ring Stephen on 6395 1323 to order your $5 bags.

Lilydale Neighbourhood Watch Report Only 9 people attended this meeting. Our

Guest Speaker was Kerrie Lamb, Chaplain, from the Lilydale District School. She spoke of her early life in Victoria and then of her time here in Tasmania. She has been teaching for 30 years altogether. She has spent 4 years at Scottsdale and 7½ years at St. Pats before coming to Lilydale where she works 2 days a week. Her role is not as a religious teacher but as a neutral and caring person to all children who need just that special attention or support at any time. Soon she will be attending a camp at Bridport with 20 isolated children from Arnham Land in the N.T. and 20 children from the Lilydale District School. The ages of these children are between 10 and 17. Throughout the year the Lilydale children will be writing to the Arnham Land children.

There are no suspicious incidents to report this month.

POLICE REPORT Between 11th and 12th April unknown person/s have

matter is being investigated by Newnham Police. Damage was about $1000. On Easter Monday night a motor bike was stolen

from an unlocked shed in Evans Road, Karoola. C.I.B. are investigating. Between 8/5/09 and 9/5/09 on Retreat Road, 2

Komatsu excavators were entered and the following things were stolen- 400 litres of diesel from one, 250 litres of diesel from the other (value $800-900) an intercooler valued at $3000, forestry maps, tool boxes, fire extinguishers etc. Investigation is still ongoing. On South Retreat Road, about the same time, 250

litres of diesel and 2 batteries worth $400 each were stolen from a loader. On May 13th, an older model Corona was stolen

from Mowbray and driven up Prossers Road, crashed through a boom-gate and then burnt out. The owner is devastated as it was his only means of transport.

The “end of speed” signs have been put up on Golconda Road.

Please note- The speed has been reduced in Doaks Road from 60 kph to 50 kph.

Our new Police Officer will start work on June 1st.

Next meeting will be on June 11th. at the Lilydale Fire Station starting at 7.30 pm. Everyone is welcome to attend.

ANZAC Day The night before ANZAC Day was stormy and very wet. We all went to bed wondering what the dawn would bring. The people of Lilydale rose in the early hours of 25th April, on the 94th anniversary of the Gallipoli landings, to be greeted by a still, star twinkled sky, and a perfect autumn morning.

People gathered at the Senior Citizens and RSL rooms prior to dawn, partaking in a warming, flavoured coffee and renewing acquaintances from previous years. Before the first light of day appeared approximately 100 people of all ages moved across the road to the picturesque Lilydale Cenotaph to participate in the Dawn Service. This is a time for reflection by all Australians.

Dawn is a time when soldiers "Stood To" to repel or advance, when sailors went to "Action Stations" to remain vigilant, and when Airmen patrolled the skies. It is a time when people in danger think of family, friends and home; when they reflect on times past and hope for times future. It is a time when lifelong friendships are formed. So it is appropriate for those of us commemorating their deeds and sacrifice, that we do so at this quiet, respectful time of day.

Words were said which evoke memories of people, known and unknown, who had served their nation; some paying the ultimate sacrifice, others bearing scars, visible and invisible. Prayers were said for those still on service

and the Last Post played. The people, who had come together in darkness, then departed in the early morning light, or gathered for breakfast and companionship. This ceremony is conducted wherever Australians and New Zealanders reside.

The day continues and a second gathering occurs in the late morning sunshine. If possible, an even greater cross section of the community arrives to lay wreaths, remember and pray for peace. The town is honoured by the presence of a Catafalque Party from the Launceston based Army Reserve, who volunteered their own time when they heard that one hadn’t been allocated to Lilydale. We are impressed by the well spoken words of students from the Lilydale District School, and share the story of their Principal's personal story of ANZAC connection. After the minutes silence, the National Anthem and a blessing from the Padre, the crowd moves to the Community Hall for morning tea.

In the afternoon, as the town returns to normal, the weather returns to its previous cloud, wind and rain, having allowed the people of Lilydale to remember in perfect conditions.

The members of the Lilydale RSL would like to thank the Lilydale Fire Brigade for catering for the breakfast and assisting with the running of the ceremonies. They would also like to thank the Ladies of the RSL for their wonderful morning tea, and the support from the Principal and students of Lilydale District School.

RSL Meetings The last RSL meeting before the winter break was held in May. The club was addressed by a representative from the Red Cross providing information on the work of this worldwide organisation. The next RSL meeting will be held in September.

Bus Trip Members and friends of the RSL undertook a friendly bus trip around the NE on Sunday 17 May. Stops where made at Low Head Pilot Station, Georgetown RSL, Beaconsfield Cenotaph and Mine Museum, and the Grindelwald village. The members were also treated to

a tour around a road works site, but that may just have been because the driver missed the turnoff.

Senior Citizens Beaconsfield’s carnival was a great success its the second one in 2years after quiet long break. Our pennants are going well with always the home team using the yellow bowls. Perth had a carnival last month with 6 mats in play. Deloraine is coming up on the 27th May with one team from Lilydale participating. We have hired our rooms out twice last month firstly it was the C.W.A. and then to the City Council for a forum. Our birthday is early July we hope to have the Valley Voices as an item.

Do hope Barbara and Kaye are off the sick list soon and back with us. and we all wish Hazel well in her new surroundings.

Our next meeting is the 9th June at 1.30pm in the club rooms. See you all next month Robyn East

Lilydale Garden Group The Lilydale Garden Group was inaugurated on April 24th at a meeting in the Old Court Room. Fifteen people have so far signed up. It was decided to keep the group as informal as possible with no agendas, no minutes, no subscriptions. We plan to meet approximately monthly at a different venue each time. In this way we will have the opportunity, hopefully, to eventually visit the gardens of all members. Each meeting will include time for a cuppa and a chat as well as a tour of the garden.

The first such visit was held on 16 May with Eva and Laszlo (Les) Borbas. Despite the bitter wind on that day we had a full tour of their extensive orchard and garden before retiring to the ‘Dome' for a warming cuppa and an extensive and informative discussion.

Tasmanian Regional Arts (Lilydale Branch) 2009 Lilydale Lantern Walk

This year the Lilydale Lantern Walk will be held on Friday 19th June. All in the community are invited to meet at the Old Courthouse forecourt at 5.45 pm for a 6.00pm start. As in previous years, walkers will go along Main Road, turn left into Station Road and return to the Courthouse through the school grounds.

All you need to bring is some warm clothes, a cup or mug and, of course, a lantern. A sausage sizzle, tea, coffee, milo and marshmallows will be provided after the walk.

Why not come along and be part of the Lantern Walk? It’s fun and it’s free!

Prizes will be given for the three best decorated shops and/or homes along the route. Even if you don’t walk, you can still get into the spirit of the night by decorating your house with a winter solstice theme?

And if you don’t already have a lantern, a free lantern making workshop will be held on Saturday, 13th June from 10.00am to 12 noon, on the Village Green. Lantern making materials will be supplied. Contact Jenny Scott on 6395 1048 for more details, or just turn up on the morning.

‘Happy Hookers’ comes to Lilydale!!! On 11-12th and 18th-19th July, the Branch will present the Tasmanian Regional Arts touring exhibition ‘Happy Hookers’. To be held in the Old Court House Annexe from 10am to 4.00pm each day, the exhibition will display a fabulous range of latchet hook rugs made, under the guidance of Jo Wild, by a group of creative women from the Deloraine community. Jo is a recognised artist and hook rug exponent.

The pieces to be displayed represent a diverse range of themes and each is accompanied by a haiku written by the maker and artist statements.

Admission will be by gold coin donation.

In conjunction with the exhibition on 18th and 19th July, Jo Wild will be conducting workshops in The Old Court

Lilydale Players For many years the players have provided a Pantomime for the children (and we hope the parents) of Lilydale, to enjoy and add to the excitement of Christmas. Due to changes in the area etc we have lost many members and do not have the numbers to continue with this tradition.

Is there anyone out there who would love to put a smile on a child’s face and share in the fun and the antics that this venture creates and would care to join the Players for this year’s pantomime.

If at all interested in strutting your stuff on the stage or supporting from behind please contact Brenda Bryce on 6395 1290 or email [email protected] .

Imagine the joy your child would feel to see Mum, Dad or sibling on the stage. All ages are considered.

Swine Flu Human swine flu is similar to influenza viruses that infect pigs. The strain presently causing concern is a mutated form called Influenzavirus A (H1N1) or human swine influenza, which can be spread from human to human. It can also be passed on by people who are carrying the virus but show no outward signs of illness.

HOW DOES THE VIRUS SPREAD? People become infected with the virus by inhaling droplets that have been coughed or sneezed out by an infected person.

A person may also become infected by touching something with flu viruses on it, and then touching their mouth or nose. The virus may survive for up to eight hours outside the human body.

There is no vaccine available against swine influenza. Antiviral treatments such as Tamiflu or Relenza can be used to treat Swine flu and other flus. (available on prescription). If you are travelling overseas, or spending long periods of time in airports, you should consider having a supply of Tamiflu, which you can use if you develop flu symptoms.

HAND HYGEINE Hand hygiene is especially important in combating the spread of swine flu.

All members of a household should wash their hands with soap and running water: Before eating or handling food After blowing their nose After going to the toilet After handling general waste and garbage Especially after coughing or sneezing.

Steps in washing hands are: Wash with soap and running water. Wash both front and back of the hands, the nails and

between fingers and thumbs. Rinse well with running water. Dry thoroughly all over.

•Alcohol-based gels and hand cleansers are also effective.

SYMPTOMS The symptoms of human swine flu are similar to those of regular flu and include: fever cough sore throat body aches/chills headache tiredness/fatigue diarrhoea or vomiting.

Lilydale District Pony Club On mothers day a few weeks ago the Lilydale pony club took two teams to the northern zone games championships. The B

team had some of our younger riders, together with a rider from North East pony club, one from Georgetown pony club and one from Launceston pony club. This team had a lot of fun and gained a lot of experience.

Our A team had 6 riders, aged from 13 to 24. They were very nervous at the start and had a few technical issues (knocking over poles and dropping batons), but once they settled down, they worked very well together. There were 18 different games to play during the day, which started at 10am and finished at about 4. They worked their way up though the scores, and when they got to the last set of 3 games, they were one of 3 teams level pegging for second place. They performed extremely well under pressure - they won 2 games and came second in the third . This

ensured that Lilydale came second by a comfortable margin. This success means that our team goes to the state finals which are at Burnie on May 31st. We haven’t been to state finals for many years! Well done riders!

Did you hear about Bullfrog and Dano, frogs in ponds and goats in the Solomon Islands? No? Then read on... In ancient Jewish Scripture, ( the Talmud, Sanhedrin 37a) it is written that if we save a life, we save a world. The scribe wrote that law in a much more complicated way, but this is the profound message of that scripture. If we save a life, we save a world.

Sometimes I become overwhelmed by the sheer scale of suffering in our world. Every time I open a newspaper I read about a new disaster, usually involving tens of thousands, even hundreds of thousands of people. For example, last year 200,000 women in America were diagnosed with breast cancer. It will be even more this year. Last night, 5000 children under school age died because they have no clean water. It will be more tonight. It is all too much to take in. We can feel completely useless when we realise the enormity of these tragedies. But wait..... if we save a life, we save a world. As individuals, as families we cannot save a nation of refugees, or stop so many children dying every day; but if we believe in small miracles and wonders, then there is much we can do.

Recently I began discussing these concepts with a couple of boys in Grade 3 / 4. We talked about making and selling jelly cups with frogs in order to raise a bit of money for a special purpose. What would be the special purpose? Perhaps the Victorian bushfire victims? Perhaps the poor? What real impact could our meagre fundraising make?

I remembered that one of the major aid organisations, Oxfam, have programs whereby we can fund agriculture and enterprises through their Oxfam Unwrapped program where even the smallest amounts of money can have an impact. For example, $10 will buy a chicken for a family, providing that family with eggs to eat or sell. Dylan and Dane got to work, making their jelly cups to sell on two days to raise the money.

Thanks to Kim in the canteen, they got a donation of a bag of jelly crystals. The boys learned a lot about measuring, calculating, commitment and reliability. Most importantly, they learned just what can be achieved through care, concern and a fairly small amount of money..small wonders and miracles!

Just think about the reaction of the family in the Solomon Islands when they receive their breeding pair of goats from Bullfrog and Dano from Lebrina, Tasmania; two young boys who are learning this ancient wisdom: that if we save a life, we save a world. Kerry Lamb Chaplain

CONGRATULATIONS Kendell Bardenhagen has been selected to be in the Tasmanian Under 15 School Girls’ Netball Team to play in the National Championships in Canberra in July 2009. Considering the number of girls playing Netball in this state Kendell’s selection is a great achievement. Well done Kendell! SCHOOL HAPPENINGS Recently many students have participated in a variety of school based activities. Our drama students performed exceptionally well in the Launceston Competitions gaining top place in three events. Our Inter High Cross Country team came home with one Champion flag and a successful day of running. Congratulations to the Grade 8 Boys for a top effort. The Inter Primary School was held on a very demanding course at Beaconsfield. Shelby Bullock, Hamish Locket, Rachel Holmberg and Logan Reynolds were outstanding performers on the day. On Tuesday morning a group of 30 students and 4 staff members will be travelling to the Gold Coast for a week of exploration, surf and fun! Enjoy the experience and travel safely.

CWA Notes We celebrated our 70th birthday in late April, with members and special guests and enjoying time to chat,

laughing at humorous items and reminiscing when listening to highlights and activities of the Lilydale CWA Branch over the years.

We received birthday greetings from many and, of course, enjoyed a delicious afternoon tea and large birthday cake. Shirley Morrisby (CWA State President) lit the candles, Jennifer Axelsen (Northern Group President) blew them out and former CWA Lilydale member, Kath Shepherd, cut the cake to much applause.

We thank the local community for their support in buying raffle tickets and congratulate the lucky winners – 1st D. Sims; 2nd T. Edwardsm 3rd J. Axelsen

During the A.G.M in May we recycled our former office bearers and thanked Carol Charlton for chairing our meeting and sharing time with us over lunch.

The Handicraft and Home Industries secretary noted that we had achieved 2nd place with an ‘impossible pie’ and 1st and 2nd with baby beans – congratulations to those who competed.

Fund raising dates: CWA Market Day - Sat 27th June, Memorial Hall Soup n’ Sandwich Luncheon, Games and Dutch Auction - Thurs 13th August. Next Meeting - Wed 3rd June 9.45 a.m. for 10.00 a.m Court House. Roll Call – an item for the garden basket raffle please.

The Lilydale Progressive - June 2009 Page 18

International Cuisine: Thailand Pan-Fried Fish with Lemon-Herb Sauce SERVES 2-3 2-3 white-fleshed fish, such as flake or basa handful of fresh sweet basil

leaves pinch of salt and pepper 2 Tbsp. oil for frying

Lemon-Herb Sauce: 1/3 cup coconut oil OR olive oil juice of 1 lemon 2+1/2 Tbsp. fish sauce 2-3 cloves garlic, minced 1/3 cup fresh coriander leaves and stems, chopped 2 spring onions, sliced 1 red chili, minced 1+1/2 tsp. sugar 2 Tbsp. coconut milk or coconut cream

Method: Place all lemon-herb sauce ingredients together in a sauce pan. Stir together and set aside. Heat a frying pan over medium-high heat. Add oil to hot pan, reduce heat to medium. Place seasoned fish in pan. Fish is cooked when the inner flesh is opaque when gently pulled apart with a fork. Place lemon-herb sauce over medium heat for 2 minutes, or until warm. (Don't boil the sauce or it will lose its fresh flavour and nutrients.) Before serving, taste-test the sauce. This sauce tends toward the sour side; it can be sweetened by adding more sugar. If it's too spicy, add more coconut milk. If not salty enough, add more fish sauce. If too salty, add another squeeze of lemon or lime juice. To serve, Spoon the sauce over the fish and serve any extra on the side. Sprinkle with sweet basil leaves. This fish goes well with rice, but is also delicious with potatoes. ENJOY!
