Also at the same time a young draught horse was stolen in the same area. From the NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH report this month No crimes were reported in the areas of Lilydale, Lebrina, Karoola and Turners Marsh for this month. This seems strange as we have had a number of suspicious incidents reported to us. It is best to report any suspicious incidents to the Police, no matter how small you think they are. We need to keep very vigilant at all times. Lilydale Heritage are having a working session this month for those who would like to come along. Working Session – Thursday 8 October 10 – 2. Working session is 10 am – 2 pm on Thursday 8 October at the Lilydale District School community learning centre (next to the Online Access Centre). We are still working on collating the information about each of the soldiers from the Lilydale District who fought in World War 1, in preparation for the upgraded Cenotaph. We also get interested in whatever happens to be talked about on the day. Last meeting we also looked at old minute books from the early days of the Lilydale RSL. Our working sessions are wide-ranging and interesting.
ROAD SAFETY IN TASMANIA – HAVE YOUR SAY Every person is a road user and has a responsibility for road safety. The Road Safety Advisory Council is currently developing the new Towards Zero – Tasmanian Road Safety Strategy 2017-2026, and wants your input on how we can improve road safety and achieve a zero road toll for Tasmania. Although the road toll is trending down, nearly 3,500 people were killed or seriously injured on Tasmania’s roads over the last 10 years. New initiatives therefore need to be developed to reduce the number and severity of crashes around the State. The Towards Zero Strategy will be based on the ‘Safe System’ approach and will consider Tasmania’s crash history, best practice solutions and feedback from the Tasmanian community. To share your ideas on how we can work ‘towards zero’, come along to a public forum and join in the conversation. 8 December, Tramsheds Function
Centre, 4 Invermay Road, 6-8 pm Launceston
To register your interest, please email [email protected] or phone 6166 3239. If you can’t attend a forum, you can still have your say by completing an online survey available at the website below. For information on the upcoming fo-rums, the Safe System and the devel-opment of the Towards Zero Strategy, visit www.towardszero.tas.gov.au.

Kidney Disease Screening - a UTas Research Project. Utas is researching a screening process which can be done at community pharmacies throughout Tasmania, to see if kidney disease can be detected early in people at risk of developing kidney disease. This study will be finishing in October, so if you would like to participate, call in to the pharmacy soon. There is an information sheet for more detailed information. You may be eligible for the study if you are aged between 50 and 74, have one of the risk factors (see below), and have NOT been previously diagnosed with kidney disease. The screening test at the pharmacy is free and takes about 15 minutes. You will need to make an appointment and bring your medicines or a list of medicines with you. Some of the risk factors for developing kidney disease are;
High blood pressure
Diabetes
Heart disease or stroke
Obesity
Smoking Family history of kidney disease. What is kidney disease? Kidney disease occurs when the nephrons inside your kidneys, which act as blood filters, are damaged. This leads to the build up of waste and fluids inside the body. Kidney disease can sometimes lead to kidney failure. If kidney disease is found early, medications and lifestyle changes can increase the life of your kidneys. Kidney failure, also known as end-stage kidney disease, occurs when the kidneys are no longer able to adequately remove waste from your blood and control the level of fluid in the body. People with kidney failure need dialysis or a transplant to stay alive. Kidney failure can happen suddenly or gradually. If you have kidney disease, it does not mean that you will develop kidney failure. One in ten Australian adults has at least one sign of chronic kidney disease; and over 20,000 receive dialysis or a kidney transplant for kidney failure.

LILYDALE NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH Eleven people attended this meeting as well as Rob Fleming, Principal of Lilydale District School as our guest speaker. Once again one of our guest speakers could not come and didn’t even go with David Brown to look at the roads that are of great concern to us also the school bus stops where signs are badly needed. This was very disappointing for us. Police Report: No crimes were reported in the areas of Lilydale, Lebrina, Karoola and Turners Marsh for this month. This seems strange as we have had a number of suspicious incidents reported to us. It is best to report any suspicious incidents to the Police, no matter how small you think they are. We need to keep very vigilant at all times. Suspicious Incidents for this month. People with electric units are advised to keep a watch on these as 3 units with a battery back-up were stolen from a farm entrance near the Lavender Farm. Scam calls supposedly from the Tax Office have been received by a number of people. DO NOT DO WHAT THEY ASK YOU TO DO AS THIS IS A SCAM to get information from you. An Alpaca and a young draught horse have been stolen from one property. While a volunteer fireman was at training between 7 pm and 9 pm, his shed was ransacked. The local service station had a person drive off without paying after he filled his vehicle up. A person was seen acting suspiciously in Rawnsley’s Road with a GPS and a metal detector. One resident in our area had the entrance to their gateway on their driveway churned up by motor vehicles and the next day bolt cutters were used to cut the lock on the gate. There was an accident a short time ago on the Bangor Road between the Bangor Hall and Pipers River Road. 2 vehicles were involved. This was reported to the Police who asked if anyone was hurt, were told no, so they didn’t even turn up. Guest Speaker Rob Fleming, Principal of our local school, spoke on his career so far in the Education Department and his aims for the school. He announced that the present Kindergarten pupils will be the graduates of 2028 and only 50% of
jobs that are out there now will be available to them then. Technology helps to support their work and they need to be the best citizens they can be. Rob would like to extend the School Farm for students. At the moment there are 109 children in the grades 7 to 10. One way he would like to extend the Agriculture programme of the school is to bring students to join our students. All students from Grade 3 up are doing some agriculture study. The vineyard has 3 varieties of grapes growing on the farm and are producing between 6 and 8 tonnes of grapes. These are sent to the Jantz vineyard to be processed and the money from this project goes back into the School Farm Funds. Year 11 & 12 students can cover the first 2 units towards an Agricultural certificate. Rob would like to see the School involved with the Community experiences and also the Community involved with the School. He would also like the young students to be part of local communities in the 3rd World countries in Asia. He also plans to change the culture of the school over the next 2 years. The Next Meeting will be on Oct 8th at 8 pm. at the Fire Station NB: Please note the change of time due to Day-light Saving Time being in. We will try to get a guest speaker regarding Fire Safety at this meeting. Police phone number to report a crime or
suspicious incident is 131 444

Char-grilled Lemon & Thyme Chicken Breast Recipe supplied by Chef Roy Soundranayagam
Ingredients
2 x Chicken breast – approx 250g
Marinade (will make enough for several dinners) :-
80g “Robertson’s” Lemon & Herb Seasoning - any
other brand is also fine
30g Salt
10g fresh thyme – use the leaves (removed from stalk)
35g Sugar
15g – ground black pepper
50g sliced garlic
2 x bay leaves
100ml lemon juice
300ml olive oil
(This will keep for a couple of weeks if stored in airtight
container in refrigerator)
Method
In a blender, blend all the marinade ingredients and
store in a clean jug. Refrigerate.
For two chicken breasts , you will only need 4
tablespoons of the marinade. If you can leave
marinade on chicken for a few hours or overnight,
flavour will be able to permeate the chicken.
The chicken can either be grilled, pan-fried or even
barbequed. It should take about 7 – 8 minutes to cook
the marinated chicken.
This can be served with mashed potatoes, chips,
steamed vegetables or a crispy garden salad.
Serve & Enjoy
This recipe will leave you with plenty of marinade
which you can use for whole chicken, chicken thigh
fillets, drumsticks or wings.

The foreman of an Irish road crew employed Paddy to paint the white lines line down the middle of the road. He told Paddy that he should paint two miles of road in a day’s work. After the first day, the foreman was pleased to find that he'd painted four miles of road instead of the two required. On the second day, Paddy completed painting just 2 miles of road. The foreman was a bit disappointed, but didn’t complain as this was, after all, only what he’d asked for. On day 3, the foreman was disappointed to find that Paddy had painted only one mile of road, and so asked, "On yer first day, ya did four moiles o’ road. On yer second ya did two moiles. But on yer tird day ya only did one moil. What’s up? Paddy replied, "Well, oil tell ya what’s up, but I tought a clever bloke loik you woulda been able ta figger it out fer yerself! Yer see, every day I gets ferder an’ ferder away from de paint can!

North-East Coast 31 January 1921 The Lilydale District By "Examiner's" Special Representative." Snug homesteads nestling midst pine groves or little orchards on a grassy flat through which a willow-clad and, alas, sometimes blackberry labyrinthed scrub creek sluggishly wends its way. All around encircling hills, mostly now dry stubble or crowned with standing sheaves of corn; near by Mount Arthur towering its massive heights. This is Lilydale, one of the most prosperous centres of the North-East Coast. The town proper contains about 350 inhabitants, and the municipality of which it is the capital has a total population of about 3000. Mr. L. Procter, a young man of promising ability, is Warden, and his co-councillors are Messrs. A. C. Rice, G. Sulzberger, L. Dadson (Turner's Marsh ward), G. Archer, W. Saunders, C. White (Dorset, a ward that extends to Mowbray heights), H. C. Watson, J. B. White, and the Warden (Tankerville). The roads so far have been kept in a very fair state of repair, whilst only a 1s rate has been imposed. Notwithstanding this, the council's management has in 12 months reduced the overdraft from £266 to £163. The police station, the new Anglican rectory (a fine building), and other residences, are on the same block as the municipal chambers. Lilydale is well supplied with churches, Anglican, Methodist, Presbyterian, and Salvationists, having resident clergy for officers, whilst Roman Catholic services are held periodically. Recreation is provided for by two tennis clubs (each having an asphalt court), cricket and football clubs. The state school keeps up a good average attendance, whose wants are well attended to by Mr. Howard (headmaster) and staff.

Not long now until daylights savings starts – more time in the garden ahead of the busy growing season – why not order your Lions cow manure to help in the preparation of your garden beds – phone Stephen 63951323 with your order. The sale of cow manure is a major fundraiser for the Club so please support us by placing an order. A recent guest speaker was Mr Mike Scott from the NE Rail Trail Committee who spoke to members about the plans for the dedicated trail to Scottsdale for walkers and cyclists. Rail trails in other parts of the world were highlighted and how economic and social benefits can be brought to an area. New members recently inducted into the Club were Stuart and Maria Carlile, Gerry Coret and Debra Adkins all living in the local community – we would like to welcome them to our Club – if you are interested in joining why not come along to a meeting and see what we are all about, phone Amanda 63951347 for details of meetings - our Club has been operating in the local community for over 25 years and is still going strong. Recent donations include PNG Birthing Mothers and Haemachromatosis Australia. Markets continue to be a worthwhile fundraiser and our last raffle winner was Mr Mick Southwell of Hadspen. It is fantastic to know that people travel from far afield to our monthly markets joining local community members. Planning for our Senior Citizens bus trip in November is underway – if you are a senior and new to the district please ring President Barry 63954233 to have your name included on our database. Keep roaring.
Lilydale District Progress Association (LDPA) The Annual General Meeting for the LDPA was held on Tuesday 1st September 2015. Jeff Sims presided over the formal proceedings including the presentation of the Audited Accounts for 30 June 2015 and the Chair-man's report. The following members were elected to the executive positions and committee: President - Robert Sutherland-Macleod Vice President - Jeff Sims Secretary - Simon Lockett Treasurer - Tom Dancer Committee - Mike Scott - Anne Youl - Tracey Sutherland-Macleod Membership fees are now due for the period July 2015 to June 2016. Thank you to Rach Denholm who, at her own cost, will provide printed copies of the LDPA Audited Accounts for the 30 June 2014, 30 June 2015 and the LDPA constitution which can be collected from the Post Office. A number of questions related to the accounts were raised at the AGM and subsequently after the meeting. To provide an efficient response to any queries on the audited accounts I would ask for any questions to be provided in writing to either Tom Dancer or myself by the end of October 2015. All questions received will be consolidated and answers provided at the general meeting on 3rd November 2015. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the new executive and committee members for their acceptance of their positions and look forward to working with them, and the Lilydale community, over the next year. The next LDPA general meeting will be on 6th October 2015 in the court house starting at 7:30pm. Robert Sutherland-Macleod, President

Bringing Back the Memories - October 2015
This is the final chapter in the article that appeared in the Daily Telegraph on Monday 1st February 1909 about then the thriving village of Lalla. On leaving the stream we arrive at practically the
nursery portion of Lalla, and here we can see rows
and rows of stocks in all stages, from the tiny
youngsters to the now growing saleable stuff.
The total of nursery stocks reaches 400,000, and a
group of first class buddens (some of them
representatives of the old country) can be seen
busily engaged at this occupation. Mr Walker’s
idea for settling in this ideal valley is worthy of
comment; firstly, being fairly highly situated, the
climate is cold, and this produces first class handy
stocks, which will thrive in any climate after they
have stood the cold they are subject to at Lalla.
The district, being a new one, and very little fruit
produced therein, there is a great advantages of
having stocks free from insect pests. And now
having given the business part of the nursery due
consideration, we do not think it out of place to
mention the pleasurable part of it. In passing the
large pond we noticed bathing sheds, high dive
platform, spring board, etc., rigged up, and the
manager informed us that a dip in the pond after
5.30pm was much appreciated. Lalla boasts of one
or two good swimmers. After a dip, and the
evening meal disposed of, we adjourn to the music
room, where music on the piano and violin is
produced by two young English nurserymen.
Methinks if John Philip Sousa happened to be
strolling around Lalla some evening, and heard
some of his popular pieces being rendered, he
would imagine a member of his band must have
strayed out to Lalla. Then there are the Saturday
afternoons for fishing, shooting, or cricketing, just
as fancy takes us, and thus combining work with
recreation, contentment between man and master
reigns supreme, and the industry grows.
The young trees are passed out to
become monuments of skill by other hands,
and the staff at Lalla busy themselves filling
vacancies and increasing their stock, the better to
meet the ever-increasing demands of the
following planting season.
Karoola Hall The Karoola Hall Committee recently held their Annual General Meeting. At the meeting long serving committee members Alan Sulzberger, and David Pinner retired from their roles on the committee. The Committee would like to acknowledge the outstanding contribution Alan, David and past member John McCarthy have made to the Karoola Community through their tireless efforts as volunteers on the Karoola Hall Committee. Their contribution has helped make the Karoola Hall and Recreation Grounds a valuable resource for the Karoola community.
A Scotsman lay dying in a London hospital and the doctor told the nurse to give him anything he wanted. She asked him what he wanted. "I would like to hear the bagpipes afore I dee", he said. A piper visited the ward and played a tune. The Scotsman recovered, but all the other patients died.

This was a very successfull money raiser for Lilydale Arts, it was hard work but enjoyable too. Special thanks to Rynne Tanton for setting up and packing up, to Tom and Ally for help in cooking so many sausages and to Bardenhagen’s Hardware for onions! Also in August we held a Felting Workshop for eight participants, run by Susan Judge who took us through the steps of making a felted scarf. Our last concert was a cello recital by Martin Pennicka, accompanied by Amanda Hodder on piano, followed, as usual, by afternoon tea. The sun was shining and we could see the sea from the Hamilton’s home on The Snake Track, a beautiful setting for very fine playing that was greatly enjoyed by all. In November we have an exhibition by our member, Jenny Scott. Jenny’s art is exclusively Chinese traditional freestyle painting. This lends itself to bringing out the life and vitality of the subjects and Jenny has specialised in painting the larger animals, including large birds and humans. Jenny will give a brief description of the technique at the opening of the exhibition and a synopsis of this will be available throughout the exhibition. 2015 Calendar: 6-8th and 13 -15th November – Jenny Scott Exhibition. Dec – Peter Alting Awards Dec – Shelly MacLeod Exhibition 5th Dec - Pantomime

An Obituary printed in the London Times... Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as: - Knowing when to come in out of the rain; - Why the early bird gets the worm; - Life isn't always fair; - And maybe it was my fault. Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge). His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouth-wash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition. Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children.
It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an aspirin to a student. Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims. Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault. Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settle-ment. [She later lost most of the funds, she tried the same trick with Burger King]. Common Sense was preceded in death, -by his parents, Truth and Trust, -by his wife, Discretion, -by his daughter, Responsibility, -and by his son, Reason. He is survived by his 5 stepbrothers; - I Know My Rights - I Want It Now - Someone Else Is To Blame - I'm A Victim - Pay me for Doing Nothing -
