Preventing Identity-Related Fraud Identity-related fraud is a growing concern in Australia. Today it is possible for some-one to obtain a range of identifying documents and/or information through fraud, deception or theft. Completely false documents can also be created using stolen personal information. These documents can then be misused in order to profit at our expense. For example, bank account details, date of birth and tax file numbers can be used to take funds out of bank accounts or fraudulently apply for loans. This unlawful use of another person's personal information is known as identity-related fraud. There are a number of simple precautions to take in relation to the disclosure, disposal, maintenance and storage of you personal information in order to reduce the risks of becoming a victim of identity-related fraud.

Disclosure: Do not provide personal information and data to any-one unless you have reason to trust them. In particular, verify the identity of any-one claiming to be from your bank or credit card company, or offering you the chance to receive a prize or other valuable item. This includes internet or on-line transactions.

You could do this by checking their address, asking some-one else about them or telephoning them back - even if they are overseas. Be careful of the personal information you convey in public. When disclosing your personal information on the phone or entering a PIN number into an ATM or EFTPOS terminal, make sure that no-one is watching you.

Disposal: Do not deposit ATM, debit and credit card receipts in public places. Take the receipts with you and destroy or shred them carefully. Carefully destroy or shred expired documents such as driving licences, passports, credit cards and old financial records such as tax returns and bank statements. If you wish to retain them, keep them under lock and key.

Maintenance: Maintain careful records of your banking and financial accounts to ensure that they do not include any transactions you did not make. Keep track of when you are to receive your financial statements, replacement cards and utility bills, to ensure that they arrive and are accurate. Storage: Store your valuable official documents (such as passports and birth certificates) as well as financial and accounting records in a secure place. Do not carry official identification documents, such as your passport or birth certificate, unless you need them. Use a locked mail box. If you leave town, have your mail held at your local Post Office or ask a person you trust to pick up your mail on a daily basis. Do not leave documents such as car registration papers or expired drivers licences in the glove box of your car or lying around your home. Do not carry your tax file number, PIN or passwords in your purse or wallet.

The Poles (Continued) Last month, we had just started the Project. …..The next step was to ‘sell’ the idea to the powers that be that had to be convinced and hopefully open up the money bag.

We submitted a proposal to the then Arts Council, under the Identity Distinct guidelines, which was aimed at regional towns. We thought we fitted right in to the criteria and luckily we were successful, we now had $6,000 to fund the project.

Next step, Aurora. Hmm, not one of us had any experience in convincing an electricity company to allow anyone to paint their poles. Luckily, no one else had ever asked them! I will always remember the first phone call to Hobart.

“Can you put me through to someone who will allow us to paint your poles please?” Stunned silence.

What followed could have been an episode written by John Cleese of Monty Python fame, but eventually, sanity prevailed and we were invited to a conference with officers from Aurora in Launceston, where we were received, not with a straight jacket but interested, helpful but slightly puzzled people. Once we made our presentation, we all got down to the nitty gritty of getting this project off the ground (pardon the pun). The gentleman in charge continued to be a great help and very enthusiastic throughout.

Main consideration was safety, both for the artists and the general public. Safety courses had to be undertaken, hard hats had to be worn by anyone working on the poles, height restrictions for the artwork were agreed upon, non metallic tools, warning signage etc, etc. Launceston City Council and the Roads Department also had restrictions, road signage had to be put out EVERY day and taken away at the end of the working day. A huge undertaking.

Community involvement was a priority. Meetings were arranged, all local groups were canvassed, ideas for designs were called for, artists were selected and approached, contracts had to be drawn up, considerations such as privacy, no advertising or names on the designs (Aurora request), inclusion, exclusion, tastefulness, protection of artwork, insurance, remuneration, security, more than we ever imagined needed to be thought of and factored in.

Poles were selected, we were allowed 15 in total. It was decided that we would start opposite the School entrance. One consideration was not to distract drivers approaching the school crossing from the Launceston side.

More ideas for designs than we had poles presented a bit of a problem at first. However, our clever artists came up with amalgamation that pleased everyone. They then tackled the problem of getting a flat design onto a round pole!

The designs were approved by the community, paintings were exhibited and used as ‘templates’ for the poles. These original paintings were later purchased by Bardenhagens Supermarket and hung in the store.

Months had passed, budgets planned, pruned, replanned, favours asked, help received, and we were ready to go! …….to be continued.;

Pole No. 289 - Artist Gillian Robnik Concept from CWA and the History Group – depicting the ‘old’ Lilydale (German Town) – line drawings of original houses/churches etc, many of which still stand today. Located near Village Green and the Village Sampler.

Lilydale Lions Club The Lilydale Lions Club has found a new home for its Dinner meetings (for the moment anyway). We have been enjoying

Sarah’s hospitality at the Leaning Church Vineyard. We have enjoyed some lovely meals of local produce.

Are You a cricket fan? Want a Bat signed by the 2005 Australian Cricket Team, including Warnie, Ooh-Ah Glenn McGrath, and that bloke who used to live in Mowbray? The Lions are running a Mothers Day Raffle which has a fully authenticated, genuine Cricket Australia Bat as the first prize. In case Mum doesn’t like cricket, there are also gift vouchers from the Lilydale Pharmacy, Bardenhagen’s Supermarket, and Gorgeous Gifts, a 16 piece dinner set, two bottles of Leaning Church wine and a Lavender pack. Tickets will be on sale from now until Mothers Day. Look out for the Lions Members selling them around town.

Cow Manure We are ready to take your orders for the best growing media in the state. Please call Steve on 6395 1323 to order. We are willing to deliver to the local area.

Tulips As part of the Tasmanian Lions club’s efforts to assist Parkinson’s Tasmania, the club is selling beautiful tulip bulbs ready to plant. They come in packs of 6 at a price of $5 per packet. They are a mixture of beautiful colours. These will be on sale at the Lilydale Markets and are available from members.

Lilydale Lions Projects The Lions have been looking at a number of projects in their 5 year plan. The on-going efforts to have a walking track between town and the Lilydale Falls has seen a number of meetings with the Launceston City Council. At present the Council is planning to widen the road to the Falls to incorporate a bike/pedestrian lane on the shoulder. Whilst this is not the ideal solution, a lack of funding, and visibility of this project in the council’s plans, means that it is the best we can hope for at present. Indications are that this could happen this year.

The club is also looking at assisting the Karoola Playgroup to improve the facilities at the Karoola Hall. We will be consulting with other Hall and oval users to consider their needs and hopefully garner their support for this project, before we go to council.

Membership Many of you may have seen the Lions TV advertisements. Some of you may have considered volunteering to help your community. If you would like to know more about Lions, then please feel free to talk to our members. We will be out and about selling Mothers Day raffle tickets, at the markets and various other activities in the coming months. There are no obligations, and you can devote whatever time you can afford to assisting others. It’s worthwhile, enjoyable and makes you feel good. And the more members we have, the greater good we can do, and the more we can share the load.

We currently have two people considering joining and we hope that there are others out there who will also take the opportunity to visit one of our meetings.

Pony Club News The Pony Club Games championships are in May, so we are practising for these at the moment. There are 6 riders in each team and 18 games to be learned. Last year our A team came 4th at the State championships.

The adult games are held at the end of May and we have many interested adults. Fortunately the adult games are easier and the rules are vague and minimal, so we may have several adult teams competing.

Indoor Bowls Carnival Update We have not had a bus outing since last Spring so no more adventures to report but we did have to deal with an unexpected crisis at the Memorial Hall on March 31st. Preparations were in full swing for our Indoor Bowls Carnival with 96 bowlers from all over the North due to arrive from 9 a.m.

6 mats and 12 sets of bowls had been brought over from the clubrooms plus all the necessary equipment to prepare the delicious lunch to be served in 2 sittings. Ladies were in the kitchen buttering the scones for morning tea as our visitors are always hungry after leaving home so early and the men had the mats and chairs set up in the main hall.

Then the worst possible thing happened---- no water---- a burst water pipe just outside the main entrance. We had 1 urn boiling ready for the first arrivals and had to wait for the repairmen to arrive from Launceston. Luckily tank water was available just around the corner so several trips were made by car to keep the urn topped up - and also the non stop washing up of cups and saucers.

A problem in the toilets but a car was on standby to ferry any urgent cases to our clubrooms. We appreciated the prompt response and repairs were completed by about 11 a.m. Our Carnival was a great success, as it usually is, and many compliments came our way from the visitors. Next one expected in August.

Lilydale Senior Citizens What a wonderful week I have had, my daughter travelled from Queensland and we had lots of fun and laughs. All I can report this month is that our night pennants have started, we won the first game but lost the second.

Friday 16th we had Joy from the Wattle Group who gave a very interesting talk, we were so pleased to see so many of our local folk turn up.

We are saddened by the resignation of our Patron Sue Napier due to ill health, we do wish her a full recovery in coming months.

Our next meeting will be May 11th at the club rooms at 1.30pm.

See you all next month. R. East

Whereas I tended to be devious, fickle, obstructive, hostile, impolite, mean, defiant, glum, extravagant, dirty, and sacrilegious." --George Carlin

Tasmanian Regional Arts (Lilydale Branch) 2010 Lilydale Lantern Walk With the approach of the winter solstice, the Lilydale Branch is once again gearing up for its very popular Lantern Walk. The walk was introduced to Lilydale, and was the first in Tasmania, following a suggestion by a local resident, who brought the idea from Germany where it is a celebration of the shortest days of the year and is described as ‘Bringing in the Light’. Now in its 14th year, the celebration has been picked up on a regular basis by other communities throughout the State.

This year our Lantern Walk will be held on Friday 25th June and will take place at the Lilydale Falls Reserve. A lantern-making workshop will be conducted the previous Saturday,19th June. Everyone in the community is invited, so put the dates in your diary and watch for further details in next month’s Progressive.

The Lilydale Painted Poles Update Thank you to those who have offered to help with re-doing the painted poles and the village entry signs.

Materials are currently being sourced and work is planned to commence in Spring when the weather is warmer. Established local artists who would be prepared to assist are still required, and work will be well paid.

With a view to ensuring that the poles receive more regular maintenance, the Branch is looking for individuals, families, and local businesses or groups,

who would be prepared to ‘adopt’ or ‘sponsor’ a painted pole. A sponsorship of $50 per year would provide sufficient funds to enable each pole to be freshened up every 2 to 3 years. Such support would be acknowledged in a brochure explaining the story behind each pole and on a plaque adjacent to each.

Co-ordinator for the project is Bernadine Alting, who may be contacted on 6395 1295.

Lilydale Online Access Centre Just a quick reminder that the Centre will be closed each Saturday in May for training purposes. Our Introduction to MYOB course is fully booked and underway. We may run another one if we have enough interest shown, so if you missed out on this course, give the Centre a ring to register your interest in the next one. Course will be held over 5 weeks at a cost of $25.

Fundraising continues with copies of the Falls Farm Cookbook ($10 per copy) and our Free Software DVD ($5 each) available for purchase from the Centre. All proceeds raised are used to purchase new items and software for use by all our clients.

Computer Tip of the month: Shortcut keys such as Cut (Ctrl+V), Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl +P) all help you use your computer quickly and efficiently without having to continually shuffle between the mouse and keyboard. But did you know you can use Shortcut Keys to open any program?

To set up a shortcut key for Microsoft Word: 1. Open your Start menu and find the icon you want

to create a shortcut key for (don’t click it just yet). 2. Right click on the icon and click “Properties” 3. In the Shortcut tab, left click your mouse in the

white box to the right of “Shortcut Key” – if you have not assigned a shortcut key yet it will say “None”.

4. One after the other (and keeping them all pressed), press the keys which you would like to use to open Word. “CTRL” and “ALT” are essential, but the last key is up to you. I’d suggest “W” for Word.

5. Press “Ok”.

From now on, whenever you press “CRTL + ALT + W” your computer will open Microsoft Word for you. You don’t have to use your mouse at all and it will work regardless of where you are in Windows. You can set up as many different Shortcut Keys as you’d like by repeating these steps for other programs. After a while you get used to them and they really speed you up. Lilydale Bowls Club "There was movement at the station for the word had got around....."

Well, all I can say is , never believe all you hear! Even though the pennant season is over, the work goes on and in many cases faster and more furious than usual.

The annual PRESENTATION DINNER is on MAY 8th, at the football clubrooms, and we look forward to a night where all achievements of the last 12 months are acknowledged. This is followed by an evening of wining, dining and dancing.

This evening is by invitation only, but, you too could be involved in the next dinner, just by becoming a social member of our club.

In the near future we expect to have our very own dedicated Lilydale Bowls Club Rooms on the block adjacent to the green. To this end we are raising money by conducting a MONSTER RAFFLE, with great prizes. Please support our cause, as we welcome all members of the community to join our club. Tickets are for sale around town and will be drawn at our TRIVIA NIGHT on Sat 31st July. (Think about organising a table.)

As part of the general fund-raising effort, the Club conducts a MEAT RAFFLE every Friday night at the LILYDALE TAVERN. Tickets can be purchased on Thursday or Friday evening. The raffle is drawn at 6.30 pm Friday. ( You do not need to be present at the draw.)

Our next event will be an INDOOR BOWLS EVENING, watch this space!!!

A Positive Outlook "This house," said the real estate salesman, "has both its good points and its bad points. To show you I'm honest, I'm going to tell you about both. “The disadvantages are that there is a chemical plant one block south and a slaughterhouse a block north."

"What are the advantages?" inquired the prospective buyer.

"The advantage is that you can always tell which way the wind is blowing."

The Lilydale Progressive - May 2010 Page 12

Diarrhoea and Vomiting. There are many causes of diarrhoea and vomiting. Such as; Viral ‘gastro’ is a very common cause of diarrhoea

and vomiting, and can be caught from untreated water or contaminated food. Bacteria can infect food or water to cause food

poisoning, and often starts dramatically several hours after ingesting the food. Parasitic gut infections (Giardia) can persist for

weeks, and are often caused by contaminated water (bush walkers often get this from drinking the water from mountain streams). Antibiotics are used to treat this. Medical conditions such as irritable bowel

syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease and appendicitis. Some medicines e.g. antibiotics, cancer treatments. Lactose intolerance Alcohol, caffeine Anxiety

A ‘Gastro’ bug has been going around the district recently. Viruses often cause diarrhoea, vomiting and gut cramps. These may only last 24 hours but can linger for many days. Sometimes flu symptoms occur after the diarrhoea and vomiting, and this is called ‘gastro flu’. Dehydration can result from a gastro infection.

Treatment - Eating regular meals usually makes the gut infection worse. Avoid food until you are feeling well. Drinking fluids is most important to avoid dehydration. The best drinks are the re-hydration drinks/icy-poles. These should be sipped or sucked very slowly and frequently. The sachets need to be mixed with boiled and cooled water. Lemonade is OK when you are starting to recover, but it should be diluted with boiled and cooled water to about quarter strength. When you feel well enough to start eating again, try to avoid meat and dairy products until your gut recovers properly. Diarrhoea can cause temporary bowel damage, which can impair the digestion of lactose in diary products (causing more diarrhoea).

Babies with diarrhoea and vomiting should continue to be breast-fed, or formula-fed. Feeds should be offered in smaller amounts, but more often, and oral re-hydration solution offered frequently between feeds. The formula may need to be changed to a lactose-free formula.

There are medications available from a pharmacy to ease vomiting, diarrhoea or cramps if the above treatment is not enough.

You may need to consult a doctor if;

A baby with diarrhoea and vomiting is under 6 months old. Slowly sipped fluids cannot be kept down, and more

than 12 hours has passed. The vomit contains blood or brown/green bile. There is severe pain; or fever over 38 degrees. There are black or bloody bowel motions Signs of dehydration develop.

Signs of dehydration include; • Dark urine • Little or no urine for 8 hours • Dry mouth, tongue, lips and no tears. • Tired, dizzy, irritable, headache, muscle cramps. • Sunken eyes, cheeks, abdomen. Shadows under the

eyes. • Cold clammy skin. Skin stays up when pinched. • An irritable, sleepy or floppy child.

Severe dehydration can develop rapidly in the very young and the elderly; it requires medical management from your doctor or hospital.

Prevention. Transmission is usually by contact with infected hands or food. If you are suffering with a gastro infection your hands will be contaminated and you need to wash frequently with soap and water or hand sanitiser (Aqium gel). If you are preparing food, you are likely to infect the food. You may be infectious for up to a week after you have recovered from a gastro. During this time you may be passing the virus on to other people via food preparation or hand contact.

Lilydale CWA Notes For Lilydale CWA, April means a birthday celebration, this year number 71. The day was enjoyed at Inveresk at the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery – what a wonderful innovation this is, wouldn’t it be great if the (now eyesore) Kings Wharf area could become a useful complex for designated activities?

Some members arrived at Inveresk early and admired the Robert Dowling art exhibition. Then 8 met for lunch at the Choose Café - we were served in the converted train carriage, giving us privacy – and good to have reminders around of the areas origins. Next we trooped along to the Planetarium – a most informative showing of our heavens, very well presented.

The Phenomena Factory was too busy (school kids) for us to investigate - but it really is a fun area for the oldies as well as the young. Lastly, coffee at the Blue Café before departing our separate ways for home. A great day made so much nicer by the courtesy we were all shown at each area we visited throughout the day.

Next meeting is 5th May, Uniting Church. 9.45 for A.GM, general meeting, lunch to share, craft afternoon.

SOCCER GALA DAY On Tuesday 23 March students from Grades 3 and 4 travelled to Churchill Park to play in the 5-A-Side Soccer Gala Day. The weather was fantastic and allowed all students to display the skills they had learned over the months of practice after school at Lilydale. A very big thank you is extended to Mr Ben Radbone and Mrs Jackie Hawes for their efforts win organising the clinics.

MOTHERS’ DAY STALL The P&F will be holding the Mothers’ Day Stall again this year on Tuesday 4th May. If you wish to donate any items, they can be sent to the school office. If you have queries please contact Jackie Hawes on 6394 8075.

BULLDOG FOR A DAY! Emma Crack is about to have the time of her life! Emma will be “Junior Captain of the Day” for the Western Bulldogs against St. Kilda in round 6 (30 April) of the AFL in Melbourne. Emma has been acknowledged for her hard work and leadership with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation in raising awareness and funds for re-search into childhood diabetes. As well as the opportunity to walk beside the team captain, as Junior Captain of the Day, Emma will visit the dressing room, run out onto the field with the team, burst through the banner and “warm up” with the team. She will also take part in the tossing of the coin to start the game. Once the game is underway Emma and some members of her family will watch the match from level one reserved seating. Emma will also receive a complete Bulldogs playing kit and framed photo and be featured on their offi-cial AFL website. We are thrilled for Emma and wish her well in be-ing honoured for efforts towards helping children with diabetes. Go Bulldogs!! And especially “Junior Captain for the Day” - Emma Crack!

NEW SCHOOL CHAPLAIN Kerry Lamb very reluctantly stepped down from her role as Chaplain a few weeks ago. We were very sorry to see Kerry finish up but fully support her reasons for doing so. Kerry contributed an enormous amount to the school and to the lives of school families in her time in the role, which she was able to successfully balance with her role as an Art Teacher. When Kerry started just over two years ago she was our first Chaplain and, while there was a lot of community support for a Chaplain, there were certainly some people who were opposed. Kerry is commended for her outstanding work in shaping the role of Chaplain at Lilydale and performing in it so well. We are pleased that Kerry will continue with us as an Art Teacher. Cara Tuthill was appointed as our new Chaplain and has been working with us for a few weeks. Cara will be here each Monday and Friday. We congratulate her on winning the position and on her smooth start with us and wish her all the best in the role.

Helpful Money Saving Hints & Tips

Install dimmer switches in your house and only have your lights as bright as you need them, this reduces your electricity bills.

Keep your engine tuned. A fouled spark plug or restricted fuel injector can reduce fuel efficiency by as much as 30%.

Don't tip out flat soft drinks, they make great icey poles for the kids.

Make your own lunch - The cost of making your own lunch can be less than half what it costs to buy it. Over a year this can equate to a saving of over a thousand dollars!

Bundle your insurance - shop around for your insurance and ensure you are getting the best deal. Bundl ing your home and fami ly vehic le insurance premiums into one could make a difference of several hundred dollars over a year!

Reduce your interest by paying fortnightly payments on your loan instead of monthly.

Write a shopping list - before you go shopping check what you 'really' need and stick to your list. Have something to eat before you go so you're not shopping on an empty stomach to prevent impulse purchases.
