Aspiring actress and model Kayla Carlson participates in Halstrom’s extracurricular group classes, such

as film appreciation and dance, creating opportunities to meet peo-ple and make friends. “The fact that everyone I meet at Halstrom wants to be there…that makes it special,” raves Carlson. A straight-A student, Carlson is able to balance her auditions and callbacks with the coursework she masters at her own pace. She expands that her teachers have the time to break down concepts and spend time on things that she may need extra help understanding. “One of the greatest gains I’ve had by being at Halstrom is the relationship that I’ve been able to have with my teachers. Because they know me, I am held accountable to know the material,” declares Carlson. “They let me ask hundreds of questions...and encourage me to do so.”

A one student to one teacher ratio is the cornerstone philosophy of Halstrom Academy. Founded in 1985, Halstrom pioneered the concept of customized

curriculum paired with guided, individual instruction. After recently expanding its staff and campus to serve students from Grades 6 through 12, the school has grown to over 13 campuses throughout the state, with the Mission Viejo location as its largest.

Halstrom appeals to a wide range of students, includ-ing artists, athletes, and young entrepreneurs with its ability to offer a tailored curriculum and to accommo-date ever-changing schedules. This flexibility allows for travel and experiences that otherwise would not be possible within the confinement of a traditional school model. Not limited by a classroom, Halstrom also pro-vides an accelerated and rigorous pace with over 100 college prep and AP courses available to suit the aca-demic needs and interests of its students.

As a well-rounded school, Halstrom celebrates unique and individualized learning. Students with ADD, ADHD and high-functioning autism can learn at their own pace without the pressure to keep up with a class-room full of students. “There are kids that are getting put into special needs classes that do not need to be...there doesn’t seem to be an in-between for them. At Halstrom, we are the in-between,” pronounces Janeva Ryder, the Acting Director at the Mission Viejo cam-pus. “The kids come in feeling like they aren’t good in school. Halstrom lets them know that they can be suc-cessful regardless of their learning differences.”

Senior, Matteo Joseph has an extensive travel schedule that requires him to be out of the country several weeks out of the month. As the Director of New Corporate Development for his

father’s successful energy drink company, West Coast Chill, Halstrom’s flexibility truly fits well with his demanding schedule and work responsibilities. Coming into Halstrom in the eighth grade, Matteo knew right away that the fit was a good one. Halstrom not only gave him an educational experience where he thrived; he was able to boost his confidence level to an all-time high. “I used to get beaten down at my other school,” laments Joseph. “But at Halstrom, based on a scale from 1-10, my confidence coming in was at a 4 and now...25!” Joseph beamed.

Matteo Joseph Class of 2015

At age 15, Spencer Mangan, an accomplished violinist and prom-ising scientist, will be graduating two years ahead of his peers, in the spring of 2015. A profoundly gifted student, Spencer is able

to accelerate the pace of learning at Halstrom, as well as personalize his curriculum as his inter-ests peak. For example, administrators and staff worked together to create a college-level Or-ganic Chemistry tutorial class designed for Spencer. “This type of [tutorial] class is not available at any high school that I know of,“ proudly states Ryder. Spencer’s mother, Margaret, chose Halstrom based on the “one student, one teacher” model and for the interaction that Spencer craved. “The ability for Spencer to ask as many questions as he wants, to have a gab-fest with his teacher over things that excite him…that would never be allowed in a regular classroom,” states Margaret. “At Halstrom, he is engaged in his learning, instead of ignored.”

Our Savior’s Lutheran School is focused on creating a learn-ing environment that balances the heart, mind and spirit… to educate and inspire. With small class sizes, a fully accredited school, and a highly educated, creden-tialed teaching staff, the students excel academically. At the same time, they are guided by the power of faith, the value of character and the importance of serv-ing one’s community.

The teachers, administrators and staff at Our Savior’s celebrate and honor the di-versity of gifts, abilities and backgrounds each child contributes to the school community. All faiths are welcome.

serrA cAtholic’s AcADeMic ProgrAMSerra Catholic School provides a Catholic faith-based education in a Christ-centered environ-ment for students in grades Preschool through Eighth. Our qualified, credentialed teach-ers use many strategies to meet the diverse learning needs of all students, including high achievers and those requiring individualized assistance. Core curricular programs align with the Common Core Standards, and technol-ogy is progressive at all levels and integrated in all subject areas. A 1:1 iPad Program will also be integrated at all grades levels for the 2014-2015 school year. All of these have been recognized as significant accomplishments and critical goals in the February 2014 Report of Findings by the WCEA visiting team.

QUESTION: Is there a Whooping cough epidemic, and should I get vaccinated? —Pam, Ladera Ranch

ROSS MEDICAL: Yes. The Centers for Disease control (CDC) has reported an in-crease in the number of per-tussis or ‘whooping cough’ cases in California, and has recommended that Califor-nians be immunized, espe-cially if they are in contact with infants. Pertussis is a bacteria that causes a respiratory ill-ness which can lead to serious complications. Infants less than 12 months old are at increased risk for pneumonia or hospitalization. The pertussis bacteria is spread per-son to person through respiratory droplets during a cough or sneeze. The disease starts like the common cold, and after 1-2 weeks severe coughing begins. Children and infants may become very ill and cough violently, resulting in a ‘whooping’ sound.

The best way to prevent whooping cough is thru vaccination. Infants are recommended to receive their scheduled vaccines. Adolescents getting a preteen tetanus booster at 11-12 years should receive teta-nus/diphtheria/pertussis vaccine (known as Tdap). The easiest thing

for adults to do is to get Tdap instead of their next regular tetanus booster—that Td shot that they were supposed to get every 10 years. The dose of Tdap can be given earlier than the 10 year mark, so if you’re not sure its best to get the boost-er. The vaccine is available at any of the Ross Medical Associates locations.—Dr. Karl J Gebhard, MD

saturday, august 9th12 – 7 p.m.

lantern Bay Parkdana Point

Overlooking the Pacific Ocean and Dana Point Harbor, just steps outside the Laguna Cliffs Mar-riott Resort & Spa, the bluffs provide the perfect backdrop for pescatarian indulgences, refresh-ing drinks, and lively entertainment. The Orange County Seafood Festival is a don’t-miss event that takes place at Dana Point’s Lantern Bay Park on Saturday, August 9th from noon to 7 p.m.

Exceptional seafood, beer, wine and music are the bill of fare at the Festival. Seafood enthu-siasts will be tempted by dishes like Caribbean lobster, lobster corn dogs, spicy seared ahi, crab cake sliders, blackened snapper and grilled cat-fish. For those who prefer turf to surf, the Or-ange County Seafood Festival offers an array of non-seafood treats as well. The adventurous may decide to sample the fried blackened al-ligator tail or simply indulge in a menagerie of the sea’s bounty. Several local eateries will offer their signature dishes for patrons to fulfill their culinary fantaseas.

In the Wine Mixer, guests will have an oppor-tunity to delight in a wide variety of California wines. Selections from Napa, Sonoma, Paso Ro-bles, Santa Barbara, and Temecula will be rep-resented. Additionally, the event will feature a beer festival with ice-cold craft beers to quench

your thirst. Whatever your taste buds desire, an immaculate pairing of fare and spirits awaits.

Spend the day and grab a drink at the Mar-garita Bar while relaxing to the live musical talents of Garratt Wilkin and the Parrotheads, the ultimate Jimmy Buffett tribute band. The Parrotheads will be joined by other musicians performing Reggae, Zydeco, and Calypso music throughout the picturesque venue. An undercurrent of beach rock is certain to fill the bluff, reminiscent of the islands.

Stroll through the exhibitor village, where near-ly one hundred vendors will display their art-work and share their crafts. Specialty perform-ers will also be on hand to entertain the young and young at heart. Sneak a photo with your fa-vorite mermaid & King Neptune and check out the sea-themed puppet shows, guaranteed to provide lots of smiles.

Admission to the Orange County Seafood Festival is free to attendees. “Big Fish” and “Perfect Wave” drink passes are available for purchase in advance of the event. Big Fish passes provide a host of VIP amenities that include unlimited beer and wine sampling, full glasses in the VIP area, a ticket for a meal at any

of the food vendor areas, private restrooms, a tented VIP area with tables and chairs directly in front of main stage and more. Big Fish Pass-es are $95 and a limited number will be sold, so it’s recommended to purchase them early. Perfect Wave passes also offer unlimited beer and wine sampling and are just $40 in advance and $50 if purchased the day of the Festival; limited quantities are available. Please visit OCSeafoodFestival.com to purchase tickets and for more information about the Festival.

Beat the traffic and take advantage of the complimentary shuttle service. The shuttle will run between Dana Hills High School and the venue between 11:30 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. Free parking is also available along Street of the Golden Lantern, between Del Prado Avenue and Dana Point Harbor Drive, or along Dana Point Harbor Drive. Parking may also be found on Old Golden Lantern or in downtown Dana Point with a short walk to the venue.

Patrons of the festival will be pleased to know that a portion of all drink purchases will be donated to the Dana Point 5th Marine Corp Regiment Support Group. So, don’t delay, a day of savory seafood, spirits and entertain-ment is right around the corner.

LOCALFOOD & DRINK

There’s no need to look further than Dana Point for scrumptious Southern fare. Smokey’s House of BBQ boasts a hometown casual atmosphere, stunning ocean view, and melt-in-your-mouth smoked meats. Izzy Mercado, owner and restaurateur, helped build Smokey’s into the cornerstone establishment it has been for over 6 years. Having begun his journey as the restaurant’s executive chef at its inception, Izzy is emotionally invested in Smokey’s service, food, and patrons.

Reminiscent of the South, tin signs and witty phrases decorate the restaurant’s walls while a large tree house centerpiece draws upon one’s youthful imagination. Perfect for lunch or dinner, Smokey’s comfortable booths are well equipped to seat a large family or party. Patrons can even sit in the “jailhouse,” two caged booths with chalkboard walls; a huge hit with kids and mischievous adults alike. While your meal is prepared, enjoy the Southern-inspired music or sporting events playing on flat screen televisions. Smokey’s also offers an impressive selection of craft beers on draft or bottled favorites.

The food speaks for itself. Smokey’s knows that patience is a virtue, and is notorious for smoking its meat “slow and low.” Paying huge dividends, meats are tender and rich in flavor. Whether you order the famous ribs, pulled pork, tri-tip or brisket, each cut is coupled with a savory marinade and sauce that serves as a flawless complement. The side dishes are equally impressive to the palate. It may be impossible to choose between the Gourmet Mac and Cheese, sautéed to nostalgic perfection in a 3-cheese sauce, Scalloped Potatoes prepared in a garlic parmesan pottage, or Smokey’s Signature Skillet Cornbread, seasoned with onions, jalapenos and cheddar.

For those who prefer lighter fare, Smokey’s offers an array of salads, seafood and sandwiches, paired with fresh, homemade dressings and sauces, unique in character and flavor. If you manage to save room, don’t miss the decadent bread pudding or homemade brownie for dessert.

Enjoy Happy Hour Monday through Friday (3 to 6 p.m.), and bring your kids to eat free on Tuesdays. Grab Southern BBQ with a view or cater your next event. Smokey’s House of BBQ at Monarch Bay Plaza in Dana Point will not disappoint.
