101 therapeutic uses for a rolled towel! Physiotherapists are well known for using everyday objects tohelp treat their patients and enable them to manage theirpains and injuries at home. Some simple ideas of how to usea towel for pain relief or exercising are listed below.1. If you are round shouldered or get pain between yourshoulder blades lie on your back (with knees bent and a pillowunder your head) with a small towel rolled and positionedvertically along your spine for 5 minutes. Do not fall asleeplike this as that will give you too prolonged a stretch.2. If you get back ache sitting, especially if you are prone toprolapsed disc problems, you can use a rolled towel as a‘lumbar roll’. Position the towel horizontally along the line ofyour waist to fill the curve of your spine and help to keep youupright instead of slouching. This is particularly beneficialwhen driving.3. If you get neck ache and find it difficult to get comfortableto sleep put a towel rolled lengthways inside your pillow caseto form a ridge along the bottom edge. This then fills the curvein your neck to keep it in a straighter position and is a muchcheaper option than an orthopaedic pillow.4. If you want to tone your thighs, particularly if you haveknee pain, use a rolled towel between your thighs to target theweakest muscles when you exercise. There are manyvariations involving you clenching your buttocks andsqueezing the towel adding different movements that can betaught to you by a physiotherapist. Such exercises are provento be beneficial in the reduction of symptoms from arthritis.5. Another knee exercise is called ‘inner range quadriceps’.You put a thick rolled towel under your knee when sitting withyour legs outstretched on the floor or bed. You then pull yourfoot up towards you at the ankle and extend your knee frombent to straight, hold for 10 seconds, relax and repeat in setsof 10-12.If your pain persists or you want more specialised adviceconsult your local Chartered Physiotherapist. To see aPhysiotherapist privately you do not need to be referred byyour doctor.‘We have won the Customer Service Award

FEETDo the Flip FlopMost people assume thatwhen the sun comes out summer shoes comeout and your feet come out on public displayand they will be so happy to be free from shoes& boots after being locked away for the winter. But there are more problems than you think. In the closed season enclosed feet can build

up corns, calluses, nail problems that can gounnoticed in the summer. The natural gait of feet, ie heel, ball, toe

changes dramatically when summer shoes(sandals, flip flops etc) come into play, feethave to fit a shoe. In sandals the sandal has tofit the foot which it doesn't - bear with me - a flipflop type shoe is a flat base with a strap (heldon by the big toe) and that's it! So when youwalk- heel, ball, toe, when you get to the toe theback of your shoe drops, loosens and becomesdetached from your foot. Simplified, imaginewalking in a pair of shoes 2 sizes too big - heel, ball, toe - shoe falls off. Now in order to keep theshoe on you have to grab the shoe with yourtoes. You no longer walk heel, ball, toe, it hasbecome heel, toe, grab heel, toe, grab. Yourtoes have become permanently clawed andyour arch never drops so now your gait is thatof a crab. The problems this brings is that you have

corns, calluses, cracked heels, soft cornsbetween your toes etc., because you are nowcreating friction from loose footwear which willbecome worse over the summer months.Planter fasciitis, mortons neuroma (pleasedon’t ask Dr Google to explain) and thickcalluses and corns beneath the toes and the ballof your foot increase and let’s not forget heelcracks and cramp - and don't even mentionballet pumps! All of these can be addressed by having a

good foot mot and service with a goodpodiatrist as well as professional advice on howto wear your favourite summer shoes while thesummer? lasts. Most people seek help becausea change out of summer sandals to shoes - eg.that wedding or posh do next week can beextremely painful. Don’t panic! Listen to yourfeet and see advert below.

Letting Go of Your Demons...The poem below was written by an autistic, anorexic young girl who came to see me aftertrying to commit suicide aged 16 a couple of yearsago and after her psychiatrist had made noprogress after 12 months treatment. I saw herinitially for 3 1/2 months and have had occasional‘top-ups’ since. She turned 18 in August, eats whatshe wants and is about to commence her place ona performing arts course that she once thoughtwould always remain a dream. She wrote this poemafter her sessions with me as an expression of herexperience of hypnotherapy and dealing with heranorexic 'demon'. She has now written a book ofpoetry which she is looking to publish to helpothers. Please let me know if you think that wouldbe a good idea by texting ‘Yes’ to my mobile or calland leave me a message: she would appreciate thefeedback.

Hypnotherapy:My sunrise. My dawn of new hope. My rediscovering me.When I fell asleep, I re-awoke my spirit.Let go of the demon, so painless and free.He is still part of me; Mutual respect.New hope.Harmony of minds, at peace. No more scars, nothing to hide.My life is mine. And my life is beautiful. Not meant to be perfect, just perfect enough for me.My choices, my thoughts, my spirit, my soul.I do not fear me.Powerful, beautiful healing. Not heal – don’t need healing.Don’t need to put the pieces back together;they were never broken.Thought I was lost, in the darkest of nightsWandering aimlessly.Faithless, pointless, lifeless.I see the sunrise, all around me.It’s beauty infiltrates me.Comforts me.My secret, my special secret, to share with the world.I am beautiful.I have rediscovered me, my dawn of new hope.My sunrise.

Gilmorton W.I. We have been fortunate to have had two very interesting meetings. In July we welcomed debraSpencer from Long Clawson dairy whose subject was Summer Treats with Stilton. Aftertalking about the history of the cheese she talked about the way that Stilton is made and howthe dairy has developed. debra also told us about the visit to the dairy by the Prince of Walesand the duchess of Cornwall. All the time that she was talking she passed round treats that shehad made and we enjoyed tasting them.

in August we were entertained by the Belles who are a female a capella choir based inWarwickshire. their style of singing is Barber shop but they did sing Jerusalem which they hadsung on the steps of Coventry Cathedral as the olympic torch went by in 2012. We wereencouraged to join in a couple of songs which made it a very enjoyable evening. if you would liketo join us please phone marjorie Ridley on 01455 556722.

Not Just Jam & JerusalemSince June, Ullesthorpe WI have visited the Loughborough Bell Foundry where a bell waspurchased to mark the Centenary of the WI, visited their twin institute in Stretton-on-dunsmore to spend an enjoyable evening listening to a talk about “Nelson and His Ladies”followed by a delightful supper, visited Caffe Crema for their annual Strawberry Cream Teaand taken part in the Federation Quiz in which they were joint first before the tie-breakquestion!

the August meeting was full of nostalgia when Felicity Austin spoke on “those Big Brandnames we grew up with”. the earliest well known brand name was twinings tea dating back tothe 1700s and obtaining its Royal Warrant in 1837. Cadburys cocoa arrived in Victorian timesand was famous for being pure and best (meaning unadulterated). Bournvita and ovaltine camelater with “We are the ovaltineys” becoming the most popular jingle in the 1930s. members gavetheir own rendition of this. Locally symingtons first became famous for their dried soups whichwere taken to the Crimean War and on scott's expedition to the Antarctic. the familiarRobertson jam began in Paisley with the wife of the owner experimenting in making Golden andsilver shred marmalade and the ‘Golly’ trademark coming later from the UsA. other brands likeChivers, Brown and Polson and Birds followed scientific advancements to devise their products(there were once 14 different flavours of blancmange on the market). Canning arrived late in the19th century with heinz' first product released in 1895; heinz chose 57 because he liked thatnumber! tinned rice pudding existed in 1917. Felicity brought adverts from the past andproducts which brought back old memories leading to much nostalgia. she was thanked for hertalk by June Whiting.

the competition was won by Pat iliffe and Clare Robertson smith won the raffle.the next meeting will take place in the memorial hall on thursday 10th september at 1.45pm

when sandy Dakin will speak on “Women at War”. All are welcome and enquiries may be madeon 01455 202499.

Lutterworth Town FCI started playing football for WigstonFields on leaving School. After moving toLutterworth in 1969, it seemed sensible tojoin Lutterworth Town Football Club. There was a big difference in the playing

conditions between Wigston andLutterworth. Wigston had a largeClubhouse with changing rooms andshowers whilst at Lutterworth the changingrooms were in a wooden hut on therecreation ground. The pitch was on therecreation ground parallel to Holly Drivewith the Lutterworth Rugby Club playingon a pitch that was adjacent to it. TheFootball Club washing facilities were twotin baths full of warm water heated byparaffin heaters, one for the home team andone for the opposition. Later the changingfacilities moved to one of the outbuildingsat the Ram (Cavalier) Inn where a large bathhad been built and sufficed for both teams. The only problem was that the players hadto make their own way to the pitch whichwas still on the recreation ground. In thefine weather this was not a problem as wecould take our cars, but if the weather waswet then we had to walk or run there andback. We couldn’t use the cars as we wereoften covered in mud.Later, changing rooms were built on the

recreation ground and shared with thetennis club. Here both home and awayteams had their own rooms with showers. The club stayed here until 1970 when it

relocated to a purpose built ground onDunley Way. A clubhouse was built on thenew ground. There was also a bowling greennext to the clubhouse. The official openingconsisted of a match against Leicester Cityin front of two thousand supporters. Iretired from playing a couple of years later, but the club stayed at Dunley Way until theymoved to new premises at Hall Lane.

LeICeSTeRSHIRe SPeAkeRS – AUgUST MeeTINgDrunken Squirrel Runs Amok

This month’s meeting began with Anne Jones reading a newspaper article about the hilariousantics of a squirrel who found his way into a pub, got drunk on McCaffreys and the franticefforts of the bar staff to capture the inebriated rodent.

our programme this month was set around impromptu speeches. We heard about an elderlyspringer spaniel who acted as a birth partner to a cat that gave birth to her five kittens in his bedand thereafter they became inseparable friends. interesting facts about potatoes and tomatoesand even a conspiracy theory regarding the production of easter eggs were revealed.

As morag Wilkes began her speech, we sat in bewilderment – none of us understood a wordshe said - this was our introduction to ‘Geordie’ being spoken. morag went on to deliver a veryamusing speech regarding accents and different languages.

All too soon it was time to say farewell until september.the Leicestershire speakers welcome anyone who would like to learn the art of speaking in

public. our meetings are supportive, informative and entertaining. We offer enthusiasm andencouragement to help turn nervous wrecks into confident, speakers. We meet at 7.30pm on thesecond Wednesday of each month at the Blaby Drop in Centre. For more information ring AnneJones on 0116 277 2295 or visit our website www.leicspeakers.co.uk We can also provideentertainment and talks to other societies and groups.

BROU G HTON ASTLEY W. I .The ladies were recently entertained with ‘An evening of Laughter’ by elisabeth Robinson, who told us many amusing tales and anecdotes. At our September meeting Margaret Hudsonwill be introducing us to the Life of a Tiller girl.

We have outings planned over the next few months to the hay Rack Gallery for candle making,to the Concordia theatre and a crafting event with afternoon tea. As the Wi celebrates itscentenary in september, Broughton Astley Parish Council has kindly agreed to us planting acommemorative tree, which will take place in the Broughton Astley Recreation Ground on the30th september at 3pm.

the Wi has come a long way over the past one hundred years when it was set up to bring womenin rural areas together when their men were away at war and to help the war effort by growing fruitand vegetables for their local markets. since then the Wi continues to provide women withsupport, friendship and educational opportunities as well as promoting campaigns on a wide rangeof subjects which affect everyone in the country.

Visitors are always welcome to join one of our meetings at 7.30pm on the second tuesday of themonth at Broughton Astley Village hall. For more information contact Fran marsland on 01455282118.

Plant Pot to Bird FeederSummer plants have been planted, plasticpots cast aside and flowers now well in bloom. So why not give your plastic garden pots anew lease of life, let them return as a gardenbird feeder, house sign or plant labels.

WINDOWS 10 AND PRIVACYWindows 10 collects quite a lot ofinformation about you and what you do onyour computer, to bring you added‘functionality’. However, one person’s‘functionality’ is another person’s privacyissue and the choice is yours to make.To be fair, the products from Apple, Android

and Chrome also collect information, butsome people feel uneasy about just howmuch information is collected for advertisingpurposes and other reasons. We can onlycover this briefly due to space restrictions, buthere are the main points to look at: -Go to the ‘Privacy’ settings (search for

‘privacy’ and it will appear in the list) - you willsee many settings there - such as under‘General’ which sends off information abouthow you write. Under ‘Location’ you can allowyour location information to be sent off notonly to Microsoft but also to their ‘TrustedPartners’ – this is used in apps (mini-programs) such as Weather apps.‘Cortana’ the personal assistant has

sweeping settings, for example it logs yourvoice, your location, your writing, yourcontacts and calendar – also have a look atthe ‘Getting to Know you’ section. Under ‘Manage Wifi settings’, a function

called WiFi Sense lets you share a friend’sWiFi network (and vice versa). As WindowsUpdates are also downloaded from otherWindows 10 users as well as Microsoft, if youdon’t want to use your broadband to updateother people, you can switch this off under‘Choose how Updates are delivered’.This is a big subject and we can only

scratch the surface, but as long as you knowabout this information being collected, youcan find out more online.

Browns Health & Safety Love in a Box collection pointOUR FINAL YeAR!Please help us to hit our target of 500 filled gift boxes! The Lutterworth & district Journal has been featuring the ‘Love in a Box’appeal since we set up our collection point for donations and filled boxes atBrowns Health & Safety six years ago. The charity Mustard Seed (reg no.1129396 website: www.msrm.org.uk) supports orphanages in eastern europe and atChristmas each year, through the ‘Love in a Box’, deliver filled Christmas boxes with gifts forthe underprivileged children in these orphanages.

since our collection point started, due to the generosity of local businesses and surroundingcommunities, the team at Browns has co-ordinated the collection of enough donations to fill andsend a total of over 1200 boxes to mustard seed.

sadly, due to the growing demands of our business, this will be the last year we are able to hostthe collection point. so this is our final appeal and we are hoping that our last year will see ourbiggest total yet!

the children who receive the gift boxes have very little and so we aim to ensure that every boxincludes essential items such as soap, toothbrushes & toothpaste, hairbrushes & combs, togetherwith toys, treats & sweets, hats, scarves, gloves & mittens. if we are to fill all of our boxes we stillneed more of the essential items above, but also: pens, pencils, crayons, notepads, small jigsaws, marbles, playing cards, toy cars, dolls, yoyos, skipping ropes, almost any small toy suitable for 3-15 year olds. if you would be interested in making a donation or filling a box yourself, please call01455 203600 or visit our offices at 7 midland Court, Central Park, Lutterworth Le17 4Pn to pickup a leaflet.

many of our local volunteers are keen to continue their work to support the Love in a Box appealwhen our collection point closes this year. if anyone or any local business would be interested instarting a collection point or has vacant storage space available to offer to the team of volunteers, please do get in touch by calling mandy on 01455 203603.

Many thanks to all those who continue to support us with the appeal, your efforts havebrought smiles to over a thousand little faces.

Bitteswell W.I.The last few months have flown past with somuch happening & still we look forward to agreat ‘OPeN’ Centenary Celebration eveningon 8th September. Some members were ableto attend the WI garden Party at BuckinghamPalace or the AgM at the Albert Hall, both ofwhich were in the presence of Royalty & wewere all delighted to hear the feedback ofthese Centenary events. Topics have been on ‘How our Body works’

with advice on care of muscles & joints & howto move correctly & administer self-help whenproblems occur. More advice was given by MrBudulis from the Leics Police, when he talkedus through personal safety especially forwomen drivers. Most of the points he madewere thought provoking especially onmotorway driving.A light- hearted talk by Felicity Austin on

‘Looking at Foods’, their introduction, packaging & advertising took us back to theEdwardian & Victorian era when many newproducts were produced & marketed.Members remembered the new foods, thejingles & the ‘big name’ companies gettingestablished post-war & with TV advertisingdominant. Many facts were fascinating eg; 6million digestives are eaten daily worldwide. The earliest branding in the 1700’s beingTwinnings tea did have a link to that family inBitteswell. So onto our yearly Garden Party when we all

greatly enjoyed a sunny afternoon of goodcompany & delicious food with special thanksto our host & organising members. Each 4th Tuesday of the month, members

meet at the hall to have different craftexperiences & learn new skills. This has beenvery successful & enjoyable. A specialCentenary tablecloth illustrating all theactivities, hobbies & crafts of this WI will be onshow at the Open Evening, 8th Sept. 7.30pm,Bitteswell School, all are welcome to come &join in with members & the JerusalemJammers will be entertaining us.

Wycliffe Lutterworth U3A Richard Hill, well known for his acting and directingskills with Wycliffe Drama Group, brought us afascinating glimpse of the China he has come tolove throughout his many visits and associations.Dressed appropriately in costume, he addressed usin Mandarin, encouraging us to learn and imitate afew basic words of this mainly tonal language – justone of the many different languages spokenthroughout this country of amazing contrasts. After a brief history of China’s development, he

explained the etiquette of dinner parties consisting of20 or more courses and extolled the virtues of‘always fresh food good for the health of various partsof the body’. It is customary to take small samples ofeach course and polite to leave a little on the plate. In China family names are written first, followed by

the chosen name. The Chinese are hard working, achieve almost

impossible targets and have good project skills whichhave led to a powerful economic growth, which isonly second to that of the USA. Their ambitious ideasare reflected in huge high rise buildings. Even the earlyedifice of Buddha was an impressive 71 metres high. The Great Wall of China, which took over 2,000 yearsto build is listed as measuring 5,500 miles, but inreality, with all its adjuncts, extends to 13,500 miles.Despite the tensions which can arise through

conflicts with the many neighbouring countries, theChinese work together towards a common good forthe benefit of the Community. The workers arerepresented by the stars of the Chinese flag. They arecreative and ar tistic in many areas includingembroidery, porcelain painting and enamelling.Despite our differences we share a common thread -a similar sense of humour. Our thanks go to Richard who has enthused us all

with his lively, fascinating insight into a little knownculture.

LUTTeRWORTH TOWN COUNCIL UPdATeBROOkFIeLd WAY SPeed LIMITearlier in the year, the Brookfield Way recommended speed limit change from 30mph to 40mph was activelydiscussed by Leicestershire County Council with the Police along with a number of residents and stakeholdersbeing consulted. e consultation over the proposed 40mph speed limit resulted in 33 responses being received, with significantnumbers objecting to the scheme. When such objections are received especially from affected residents,Leicestershire County Council evaluates the scheme with its key stakeholders and appraises the feedback received.e general feedback received from local residents was that they would like the speed limit to remain at 30mph, due to the following:

• children’s playground having access from Brookfield Way; • children use the road during school starting/leaving times; • the footway has regular use by pedestrians and cyclists; • pedestrians need to cross to access the Country park; • poor visibility at junctions; • an increased speed limit will increase vehicle speeds and increase noise pollution.

As a result of the feedback received during the consultation process, Leicestershire County Council is not now looking to increase the speedlimit from 30mph to 40mph on Brookfield Way Lutterworth. ank you to all residents who fed into this consultation process.

gRASS CUTTINgAs reported in the Annual Report, Lutterworth town Council is due to put its grounds maintenance contract out to tender this Autumn /Winter. As part of the tender exercise, it is the intention to include all Leicestershire County Council owned areas as well as LutterworthCountry Park and Dunley Way recreation ground in order to obtain outline costs.once outline costs have been obtained, Lutterworth town Council will then consider if it wishes to formally take over the maintenance ofthese additional areas.

LUTTeRWORTH CeMeTeRYe Lutterworth Cemetery is in the process of being transferred from Bellway homesto harborough District Council as a section 106 Developer Contribution. is parcel ofland will then subsequently be transferred over to Lutterworth town Council so that itcan commence its new role as a burial authority. Whilst this project has unfortunatelynot moved as fast as the town Council would have liked, work is being continued in thebackground so that the town Council can operate as efficiently as possible once theland falls within its ownership. Funding sources are being investigated in order toprovide a turning circle at the location.

LUTTERWORTHMUSEUM

Lutterworth Museum’s series of lectureson the archaeology of Leicestershireand Rutland is continuing. ‘The LongView’, a study of continuity and changethrough the ages, given by Peter Liddle, the former county archaeologist, beganon Saturday Sept 5th and continuesevery Saturday until October 10th. They begin at 10.30am at the Museum in the

One Stop Shop, Gilmorton Rd, LE17 4DY andlast for two hours, with a break for coffee andbiscuits at half time. Each lecture is complete in itself so don’t thinkbecause you’ve missed the first (on religion)that it’s not worth starting. You can comealong to the next on Saturday the 12th andenjoy learning about what houses andsettlements were like from the earliest timesthrough to the present. The next four cover‘Everyday Life’, with the opportunity to seereal objects from the past. Next is ‘Landscape& Settlement Patterns’ - why people settledwhere they did and what influenced their

decisions. This is followed on October 3rd by ‘Towns and other Central Places’. Those‘other central places’ were sometimessurprising! The series finishes on October10th, appropriately enough, with ‘Burying theDead’. This ritual has changed markedly overtime and seems to be almost like a fashionstatement. You did what the neighbours did –but better! Each lecture costs £6.50 and you can pay atthe door. They are very popular and 50 is ourmaximum capacity, so if you think you wouldlike to come to any or all of the remaining 5 lectures please ring Wendy on 01455698076 or email [email protected] tobook your place.

LOROS Hospice is turning 30 and they want everyone inLeicester, Leicestershire and Rutland to help give them a Birthday to remember.Three decades ago on September 2nd 1985, the Hospice opened its doors and welcomed

its first ever patient. So, for the next 30 days, the charity will be encouraging people to support their 30 For

30 campaign by doing 30 things for LOROS while raising £30 for the Hospice at the sametime.LOROS CEO John Knight said, “This is such an exciting year for LOROS and we want

the whole of Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland to be involved. Turning 30 is a hugemilestone for the Hospice and LOROS has developed so much over the past three decades- it’s extraordinary to think that we’ve gone from having just a dozen beds to more than30. Over the years LOROS has become a big part of the community and we want everyoneto help us celebrate turning 30. So get your thinking caps on, get fundraising and join inthe fun this September”.Whether it is reading 30 books, swimming 30 lengths of the pool, completing a 30-hour

dance-a-thon or walking 30 dogs, everyone can get involved with the campaign. From footballers to students, to guides and brownies, absolutely anyone is being

encouraged to make LOROS the charity of their choice this September. The £30 raised could pay for six patient’s meals for a day or it could pay for one hour

of care for a patient at LOROS. £300 could pay for two patients to attend day therapy atLOROS and £3,000 could pay for the care of an inpatient for six days at the Hospice. Q: I’ve had a letteroffering me theopportunity toinvest in fine wine. The returns lookreally good and I’mtempted, but myfriend says not to trusta letter in case it’s a scam. How can I tell if it’s genuine?A: While there are lots of legitimate

investments out there, your friend is right towarn you. Letters and cold-calls fromunknown companies can be a scam.Investment opportunities can ask for largesums and you need to be completelyconfident before you put your money in.First, do your research on the company.

Investigate their website thoroughly andpay attention to where the company isregistered. If it’s outside the UK, be on yourguard - if it is a con, it will be difficult to getyour money back. You could also look forindustry bodies that oversee the sector toassist you with investment advice.Next, check if the offer is realistic. Do

some comparisons among similarcompanies for what the usual return is. If itlooks too good to be true, it probably is.Finally, look out for high pressure sales

tactics. The literature may ask you tocontact them by phone. If a salesperson putspressure on you to complete the dealstraight away or tells you not to tell anyoneabout it, it could be a scam. For advice or to report a potential scam,

LutterworthPiecemakers Well, all of a sudden itwould seem summer isalmost over, how timeflies!!! As the weatherhas not been brilliant I would expect mostof our group have been busy on theirmachines getting ready for ourforthcoming exhibition. I, for one, havebeen trying to complete quite a few items.

heather Jacks did an amazing talk and iwas pleased to know that quite a few ladieshad read about it in the Lutterworth &District Journal - thank you so much forcoming and i hope you enjoyed the evening.

in september we have another well-knownspeaker Yvonne Brown giving us a talk onCeltic work. i must say this is one of myfavourites and i feel sure it will be a veryinteresting evening. she is also holding aworkshop the following day from 10-4 andalthough we always give our members firstchance of booking on these workshops, theyare then thrown open to anyone else whomight be interested in joining us. if there isanyone out there then, if they would like tocontact me on the phone number below or ifi am unavailable you can access our blogspot:lutterworthpiecemakers.blogspot.co.uk forfurther contacts.

october is our AGm where we discuss theyear’s events and this year we will have a talkon the history of piecemakers.
