Happy New Year!

Throughout 2017, I had been talking with you about all the new changes in our regulations and how we were busy trying to prepare ourselves to be in compliance with the new expectations and processes.  Well, we were given the gift of our annual inspection over the Christmas holiday!

I am happy to report that once again, Iowa Masonic had a great inspection!  We had just two minor concerns brought to our attention.  Both of these concerns were corrected before the surveyors even left the building.  We should all be proud of this outcome as there was a lot of preparation leading up to it.

I would personally like to thank everyone for their role in having this successful survey.  Thank you to the staff for showing Iowa Masonic hospitality as you always do, thank you to our family members that provided feedback to the survey team when they were here, and thank you to our residents for your honest and genuine feedback you supplied to the team.  It takes all these components to come together to help make this successful.

Now, we can start planning for more changes in 2018!

Wishing you all a wonderful year ahead.

With Gratitude

Thank you to all our generous friends in the community who shared their time and talents with our residents this Christmas season. Our residents are truly grateful for all your blessings of music, gifts, and visits! While it is impossible to thank every person who made a difference this holiday season, we would like to thank a few, in the hopes we are not forgetting anyone! The incredible choirs from Pleasant Valley High School, Cub Scout Pack #129 with Realff Ottesen caroling & handmade ornaments, carolers from Trinity Episcopal Cathedral Church, Omicron Omega Sorority Chapter #7470 church for adopting residents & purchasing Christmas gifts, our friends at the Salvation Army for their donation of new lap-robes and footies, Davenport Chapter #178 Order of the Eastern Star for Christmas & birthday cards, & to our beautician Jenna for her gifts for all of the residents. THANK YOU also to Mr. & Mrs. Claus for visiting us, and to their secret elves who personally selected a special gift for every resident! And last but not least, we would like to thank our families for their kindnesses, Christmas cards, expressions of gratitude & holiday goodies you have shared with us. It is our privilege and honor to care for your loved ones

Tips to Stay Safe on your Feet this Winter*

Independent Living at Masonic Village

· Focus on Footwear. Rubber or neoprene soles, with plenty of tread, provide better traction on snow & ice than either leather or plastic soles.

· Careful with Cars. Many falls occur when exiting or entering vehicles. Always make sure footing is clear when getting out of cars.

· Beware of Black Ice. Stay on dry pathways or ones that have been treated with sand or salt.

· Shovel Safely. (or not at all!) First, clear a level pathway to stand on to keep balance. Take numerous breaks and check heart rate and stress level while shoveling.

· Make winter safety a priority. Avoid rushing and allow extra time to reach your destination safely. Avoid shortcuts through snow or icy areas.

Masonic Trivia

The William Bettendorf Mansion was built in 1909 & 1910. Mr. Bettendorf had great hopes for his mansion, desiring it to be the most magnificent home in the Quad Cities. He dreamed of entertaining the presidents of the New York Railroad, the Rock Island and Milwaukee Railroads there, intending to impress them and ultimately sell railroad cars to them!

Funnybone

“Perhaps I am a bear, or some hibernating animal underneath, for the instinct to be half asleep all winter is so strong to me.”

Anne Morrow Lindbergh

As part of our commitment to excellence & providing the highest possible standard of care for each resident, Iowa Masonic has several committees that meet regularly to meet and exceed our set standard. We are dedicated to being the provider of choice in the Bettendorf and surrounding communities. QAPI, Employee Council, Health & Wellness, Safety & Infection Control, Quality Improvement, Leadership Team, Medicare Team, and our Clinical Care Plan Team are a few of those committees to name just a few. We are truly a team at Iowa Masonic, an interdisciplinary team from all departments, working together to uphold our core values of compassion, commitment, and community.

St. Ambrose Students Make an impact onMusic & Memory Program

Students from St. Ambrose University’s Speech Language Pathology Graduate Program and the Activity Staff at Iowa Masonic have teamed up together to continue momentum and progress on our Music & Memory Program! During their fall semester, 7 students spent one on one time with 13 residents, creating personalized playlists and loading iPods for residents. We are truly grateful for their help and look forward to future collaborations with the students.

If you know of a group who would like to volunteer, this is a great way to make a big impact in just a short time! Our residents love the interaction, are personally impacted and are grateful to have their personal music playlists at their fingertips. Our volunteers are rewarded with knowing they have made a difference in the lives of others. Contact Chris Stickfort for more information.
