News updateALAN CARR DONATIONTelevision funny man, Alan Carr, took part in the Channel 4 programme, The Million Pound Drop, on behalf of The Mayhew.

The comedian appeared on the game show on July 25th taking away £2500. Alan used to live in the local area before moving to West London. The donation will help The Mayhew cope with all the abused animals coming through the doors.

Alan, 38, said: “I am thrilled to have been able to help The Mayhew Animal Home - even in such a small way. They deserve every penny and I just hope my appearance on the show will inspire

ROYAL DOG BOOKAby King, the author of a new book about a fictional Royal dog named Lupo has announced she will make a donation to The Mayhew rescue centre from the proceeds of her first book. Aby said: “I was so moved by the amazing work that you and your small army of volunteers do for the good of London’s needy animals.

“I’m so pleased The Mayhew is going to benefit from Lupo and the Secret of Windsor Castle and other books to come.

“The work that you do is essential to so many creatures. You are there to help, train, feed and love those poor animals that have fallen by the wayside. Supporting you means a great deal to me. Thank you

OLDEST MAYHEW CAT ADOPTEDSome great news; 14-year-old Mayhew resident, Nick, who has been at the home since 2012 has been adopted! The tabby would have died had he not been brought in after being severely neglected and then abandoned. Nick was diagnosed with kidney disease and thyroid issues and subsequently had a thyroidectomy. He was also put on tablets for high blood pressure and his age and health meant it was difficult to get a new home. But he has now been adopted by a lady in Bow who wanted to give an older cat a home. Many thanks!

Ricky and guests wore the noses in advance of National Wetnose Day on September 26, which raises funds for struggling animal rescue centres around the UK.

As part of Mayhew International’s work, Dr Mohammadzai regularly trains local vets at the shelter, Nowzad, in spay and neuter techniques.

He also carries out more complex and delicate surgery such as skin grafts and eye operations.

RICKY GERVAIS ‘NOSE’ HOW TO HELP KABUL ANIMALS

ELVIS LEAVES THE BUILDINGWe managed to reunite one owner with her dog, Elvis, who wandered off after some builders left the door open. Luckily, Elvis’ owner had had him chipped and neutered with the Mayhew – which has microchipped a record number of animals – 801 from Jan–July 2014 – so there was a happy reunion.

We offer a low-cost Microchipping and neutering package at our clinic. The process is cheap, harmless and takes seconds. A small chip (the size of a grain of rice) is implanted into the back of your pet’s neck with a unique number on it. The number is then stored on a central database with your name and address details attached.

News updateINDIA VETS VISITTwo vets from India recently visited The Mayhew for some hands on training. Dr Jawahar and Dr Vinay work at the International Training Centre in Ooty, India - a charity which is part of the Worldwide Vetinary Service, and has been supported by us for many years.

Chief Vet Ursula Goetz, visited the training centre and to strengthen the bond between the charities offered the supervising vets a training course after they completed two years of employment with the ITC. Dr Jawahar and Dr Vinay both did that recently and we were very happy to welcome them.

Dr Jawahar said: “The training I received from Mayhew staff has been brilliant. I learned a lot of new skills especially about animal management techniques. I’ve gained some valuable knowledge which I will take back to India

We’re delighted to announce that shoppers and staff at Sainsbury’s in Willsden Green have chosen The Mayhew as their local charity partner for the next year.

They also presented a cheque for £4232.42 to our Head of Marketing, Tracey Addison, on September 1. The money was raised through collections, bag packs by local school children and the previous deputy manager, David McAdam, taking part in a marathon.

Tracey said: “A big thanks to Sainsbury’s for giving this money to The Mayhew to help our animals. We are thrilled that Sainsbury’s has chosen to support us in 2014/15. We look forward to working together over the coming year to ensure the pets get the better life they deserve.”

Store manager, Wayne Vidler, added: “It’s great that Sainsbury’s staff and members of the community have chosen The Mayhew as our local charity partner for the next year. We look forward to raising more funds over the next year so

they can continue the vital work they do to save the lives of abused and neglected animals.”

Sainsbury’s has also donated considerable amounts of food and drink to the Mayhew for its events, including Open Day, Tinsel & Tails.

Sainsbury’s Westminster Queensway North branch has also announced they’ll be supporting us for a year. We are very grateful to the store which is the third in the chain to help us.

“I enjoyed carrying out operations with the other vets and nurses. I was shown much easier ways to carry out spay techiques on cats, such as removing the uterus from the side not the centre, which is less painful and easier for the animals.

Co-founder Richard Jaques, owner of Cotswold Web Services, said “We are delighted to be able to launch a site that will enable dog owners to make an informed choice on where to get the best for their pet.

SAINSBURY’S

SNAKE CHARMERThe Mayhew had an unexpected guest in July when members of the public handed in a Royal Python they found trying to climb a wall in Holland Park. They scooped it up in a cat basket and brought to the rescue centre.

Sam Davis Bernard, named after the men who brought it in, spent the night warming its scales on a heat pad. It then slithered off to the Dangerous Wild Animal Rescue Facility in Essex.

Tributes to Ko

A rescue dog saved by The Mayhew after being found collapsed in a park bleeding, raw and with barely a hair on her body in 2011 has sadly died after spending two years in a loving home.

Ko, an Akita, had recently been diagnosed with crippling bone cancer which had spread to her shoulder. As she was in a great deal of pain her owners, Steve and Joy Manzanero had to make the agonising decision to let her go peacefully and have her put to sleep.

When Ko arrived at The Mayhew in May 2011 she was diagnosed with chronic mange and was given life-saving medication including antibiotics, medicinal baths and skin scrapes. Throughout it all she remained brave and strong.

Steve & Joy adopted Ko in 2012 and she went to live with them in Hampshire.

Caroline Yates, CEO, said: “It is with such great sadness we had to inform our supporters that the wonderful and very much loved Ko is no longer with us.

“Steve & Joy, her lovely adopters, discussed various options but came to the decision that what Ko needed was peace.

“Ko is one of those dogs that will remain in the hearts and minds of everyone associated with The Mayhew forever. We cannot thank Steve & Joy enough for giving Ko the family and love she so richly deserved. “She was a true Mayhew star! “

Ko became one of The Mayhew’s first TheraPaws dogs; helping people with Dementia and other illnesses.

Steve added: “I was determined from the first moment I saw Ko that she was coming home with me. She was a unique, amazing, special dog, my best mate.

“Even towards the end when she was crippled with pain she made it upstairs to see our daughter, Georgia-May, who adored her.”

Joy said: “It warms my heart to hear all the wonderful comments and tributes on the Mayhew Facebook page about our beautiful Ko. She did not deserve the mistreatment she suffered early on in life. She has left a huge paw print on my heart. Rest in peace my darling Ko.”

Does any cat stand out?Zeb was part of feral colony rescued from a house. As she was no longer a kitten, there was concern it was too late for her to be a pet. Initially she hid under the kitchen units until she got used to me. Three weeks after she arrived, I finally heard her purr and I was able to stroke her while she ate. She soon became wonderfully affectionate. She was adopted shortly after. That’s what makes the job so rewarding and worthwhile.

What is difficult about fostering? It’s sad to say goodbye at the end of the foster period but that is part of the job. It is hard knowing that black and white cats are less popular because of their appearance. Some of them have been waiting for a permanent home for a while.

How long have you been a volunteer and do you have another job?I started fostering in 2008. I’ve had 21 cats ranging from a few weeks old to 16 years. They stay with me for an average of two months before returning to The Mayhew for adoption. Professionally, I’m a self-employed translator working mainly from home.

What do foster cats need?Often, they are very frightened and need time to build confidence. Louis came to me as a tiny kitten who had just had a leg amputated. As a feline whirlwind, he recovered straightaway. Sawyer was part of the Mayhew’s TheraPaws team but later developed asthma. During his first few days I had to fit a mask over his face and apply an inhaler. The vet suspected his condition was caused by cleaning products so I stopped doing housework: result!

The Mayhew has more than 300 volunteers working tirelessly to keep the home running smoothly. We caught up with Michelle Homden our longest serving cat foster mother who is sadly leaving The Mayhew. Over the years she has taken aggressive cats, difficult cats, nervous cats, feral kittens and cats with health problems.

Why did you choose to volunteer at The Mayhew?Because, by promoting responsible pet ownership, The Mayhew puts the welfare of animals first. Getting a pet is a huge commitment which not everyone can, or should, take on.

Why are you leaving?Sadly, I’ve had to move out of my flat as my landlady is selling it. I’m in temporary lodgings. If I don’t find somewhere permanent by winter, I’ll ask The Mayhew for one of those centrally-heated cabins. I’ll happily share it with a cat!

If I had to sum up The Mayhew in three words they would be: Cats, cats, cats - there is only one dominant species in my life!

Shyla the sweet natured Staffie showed off her skills as a TheraPaws dog when London Live television visited The Mayhew to film the animals.

TheraPaws SHYLA THE STAFFIE: STAR OF LONDON LIVE TELEVISION

“Not The One Show” reporter Anthony Baxter, took a shine to Tiny, one half of super cute sister act, Tiny and Whiney.

London Live was hosting a segment on “How Well Do Londoners Treat Their Pets” and wanted to find out more about TheraPaws – a ground breaking programme to promote emotional and physical wellbeing amongst elderly people with Dementia.

Eight-year-old Shyla is part of a dedicated team of kittens and dogs who visit more than 20 care homes and residential facilities every week.

Shyla arrived at The Mayhew because another dog at home didn’t get on with her. But her wagging tail and friendly manner immediately marked her as an ideal TheraPaws pet.

The heart warming and pioneering scheme was set up in 2012 to help people with declining memories. As touch is one of the last senses to be affected by the illness the pets provide a welcome jog down memory lane.

Stephanie Hall, Therapaws Co-ordinator said: “It was fantastic to showcase the work that Shyla and other pets do. They are more than just rescue animals. They go on to help others who also need rescuing.”

“We know these visits provide much needed therapy and help reduce depression and stress. Even residents who wouldn’t come out of their rooms before rush to greet the pets.”

Over the past year, TheraPaws has expanded into Palliative Care. The pets visit a number of care centres within North London including St Luke’s, St Charles and St John’s and Elizabeth to visit people with Vascular Dementia, and other long term illnesses.

TheraPaws stands as a model of excellence for national and international bodies, and has welcomed visitors from Holland, Georgia, and Moscow. The team has also agreed to provide strategic advice to help develop a similar model for the Social Innovation Lab for Kent (SILK).

The rescue centre is always looking for new volunteers who must be available anytime between Monday and Friday 9-5. For further details about volunteering opportunities with TheraPaws www.themayhew.org/get-involved/volunteering

Rescue centres like our own here in Kensal Green face a rising influx of stray cats and dogs that have escaped in panic.

Here are some handy tips to keep your furry friends calm and content during celebrations. • Make sure all the doors, windows and

pet flaps are securely closed. • With all the commotion outside, your

cat or dog may want to retreat to a quiet place, such as under the bed or in a cupboard. Allow them access to their sanctuary at all times as it helps them feel safe.

• Never leave your pet alone on the nights when fireworks are going off. The stress may cause them to panic and harm themselves.

• Take your dog on a long afternoon walk and bring your pets inside before the fireworks start.

For new supporters the first step is to go to www.easyfundraising.org.uk and follow the quick registration• Search for a retailer you’d like to shop

with such as M&S, John Lewis or Amazon.• Click through to the retailer website

and make your purchase. A percentage of what you’ve spent will be given back to The Mayhew.

It’s simple, won’t cost you a penny and there really is no catch.

• Bring all guinea pig or rabbit hunches indoors or into a secure garage or shed. Cover the hutch with a thick blanket to muffle the sound and screen the bright flashes of light.

• Feed your pet their evening meal before the fireworks start. A heavy meal can help them feel calm and tired.

• Close all windows and curtains as this will help to muffle the sound of the fireworks. To help distract them from the noises, turn on the television or play music. Alternatively give your dog a bone to chew on and give your cat toys to play with.

• Act normally when a firework goes off; fussing over your pet when they are scared won’t help. If your pet sees that you are calm, they will feel calm too.

For existing supporters: • Got to www.easyfundraising.org.uk/

raise-more/find-and-remind it pops up with a reminder to claim the donation each time you visit a website.

• Look out for upcoming offers on the regular emails easyfundraising send out – are you signed up as a supporter? If not, please do sign up and start using the service. You’ll also receive all the emails so you can be up-to-date with what’s on offer.

Guy Fawkes Night and Diwali are marked with dazzling displays of fireworks. Whilst the fireworks may be enjoyable for humans, pets get scared of the banging and explosions.

The Mayhew is officially one of the top ten charities raising money through Easyfundraising. Summer open day

This year’s Summer Open Day has raised over £10,000! It was a great day out for all the family as guests met the animals and enjoyed a vegetarian barbecue, cake stalls and a street market.

One of the special guests was Charlie – a former Mayhew resident turned search and rescue dog. Charlie, known as Scooby during his time at the home, was accompanied by his new handler who talked about their work with the South East London Search and Rescue charity.

The charity specialises in finding elderly vulnerable people suffering from Dementia who are lost or vulnerable.

The Chocolate Labrador also had a starring role on the Paul O’ Grady show, “For the Love of Dogs” showing off his skills by sniffing out the presenter when he hid in a variety of locations.

Charlie’s owner, Chris Jones, a retired

police officer, said: “As soon as I saw him I knew he would be perfect as a search and rescue dog. He’s full of energy and very alert - just perfect for the role.

“He’s still in training but has picked it up so quickly. If he finds a missing person he gets his favourite treat of baked liver. That always works!”

Events Officer, Lauren Coleman, added: “I’m pleased to say we made a fantastic £10,199,19! I’d like to say a huge thank you to everybody who made it happen, because without all of you and our loyal volunteers we couldn’t have done it.”

Other guests included the Mayor of Hammersmith, Councillor Mercy Umeh who thanked everyone for a great day out.

harry hi all

here are a couple of photos taken last week of harry with

treacle at one of their favourite haunts - Weald Country

Park in Brentwood. harry has settled in so well and easily

with us. he and treacle are best of mates and we’re one big

happy family. even his barking at other dogs is better - not

We went to an obedience show in Norfolk as I was competing

with treacle, so harry got his first taster of a busy dog show

and he coped better than I ever imagined. he is a natural

agility dog, as you can see from the picture.

very best regards,

into proper little ladies, miffy does not leave my side and

ella is the dominant one now - she is definitely the leader.

thank you so much for all you have done I cannot thank you

enough, if it wasn’t for you we would never have met them

thanks again

Pet Plan explainedDid you know that The Mayhew Animal Home and Petplan work together to ensure rehomed animals have the best start in their new life?

This important partnership means that each rehomed dog and cat can leave our rehoming centre with four weeks’ free Petplan insurance, providing new owners with peace of mind that they are covered for unexpected illnesses and injuries.

Being a new pet owner is an exciting time, but it is also important to consider taking out pet insurance to provide financial support as vet bills can be very high. It is also important to shop around as there are many types of pet insurance available on the market.

Petplan offer a range of pet insurance policies to suit all budgets, including their Covered For Life policies.

The Mayhew Animal Home and Petplan work closely together and we receive 10% of the policy premium for each customer we introduce. Petplan also gives a further 10% each year these policies are renewed. The Mayhew also gets commission if people switch their policies to us as long as they mention us. Since our partnership began in 2010 we have received over £30,000 from Petplan which has helped our animals.
