We are expanding our program to accommodate this and are offering even greater academic and extra-curricular options. Increasing Students’ Self-Management & Self-Advocacy We have had strong academic success as noted through Diploma Program results and are now looking to extend the holistic development of students in order to better prepare them for the independence that will come in university. Social and Emotional Learning An Advisory program is well established in the Middle School. The AISB Middle School Advisory seeks to develop balanced learners and caring relationships, whereby students feel a sense of belonging, fostered by a climate of trust. In addition to a dedicated MS Counselor, we also have a Peer Facilitator service learning group that offers additional support to our students. MS Course Requirements

Grade 6In Grade 6, students will take the following courses: English, Mathematics, Science, Individuals and Societies, PE, Design Technology, Band, Visual Art, Drama, and a Modern Language. Romanian students are required to take Romanian Mother Tongue.

Some students’ schedules may be changed to accommodate classes to support English development or to accommodate learning support.

Grades 7 & 8In Grade 7 and 8, students will take the following courses: English, Mathematics, Science, Individuals & Societies, PE, Design Technology and a Modern Language.

Romanian students in Grade 7 and 8 will study Romanian Mother Tongue. In addition to their Mother Tongue class, they can also choose to study French, Spanish, or Band.

Over the two years of Grade 7 & 8, students have the option to take:• Music (band);• one semester or more of Drama;• one semester or more of Design, and• one semester or more of Art.

Some students’ schedules may be changed to accommodate classes to support English development or to accommodate learning support.

Standardized TestingStudents in Middle School take the Measure of Academic Progress (MAP) test which evaluates the students’ attainment in Mathematics, Reading and Language Usage.

Students in Grade 8 also take the International Schools As-sessment (ISA) each year. The test is appropriate for inter-national schools like ours as it aligns well with the Aims and Objectives of the MYP. There are four different sections of the exam: Math, Reading, Narrative Writing (Writing Task A) and Expository Writ ing (Writing Task B).

The results of both the MAP and the ISA are compared not only against national systems around the world but also against other international schools with a similar student makeup as ours. Test results are shared with parents.

MYP Curriculum

The AISB Middle School offers a rigorous curriculum based on the IB Middle Years Program (MYP), with the aim of preparing students for entrance to the IB Diploma Program.

The longer range goal is to prepare students for college/university acceptance. In each year, students will have courses drawn from the eight Subject Areas of the MYP as shown in the diagram to the right:

Student EvaluationAISB employes a 1-7 criteria-based grading system in accordance with the IB Program. Grades are established using published criteria from the IB and are unique for each subject area. Academic grades are reported on a 1-7 scale according to the follow-ing general descriptors:

Service LearningAISB provides an outstanding international education which inspires students to realize their full potential and prepares them to be successful and responsible global citizens. We believe that Service Learning is an integral component of achieving this mission. As such, we are committed to: (1) promoting a clean environment; (2) responding to the needs of living things; (3) addressing health concerns; (4) fostering education for all; and (5) raising awareness of global and local issues.

All Middle School students are expected to be involved in a service learning project throughout the school year.

Extra Curricular ActivitiesAISB is a member of the Central and Eastern European Schools Association (CEESA), and offers an extensive program of com-petitive athletic activities, both locally and with other international CEESA member schools. The school also encourages and supports activities in the visual and performing arts, speech, debate, MathCounts, Knowledge Bowl, Model United Nations, student publications, and student government.
